(Hetalia Main 8 x Reader) Fighter S/O!
(Gender Neutral) Headcanons ~ A/N omg thanks :33 anon if ur good at fighting thats literally so cool. sorry that this is shorter, but i didnt have many specifics-
Trigger Warning: Swearing, other than that none! Just fluff!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
YES YES YES ALFRED WOULD LOVE THIS.
As soon as he learns you’re good at fighting, he suggests that you two spar.
Now that he knows you’re not breakable, he is going to treat you differently. Throwing things at you with his full strength (which is more than humanly possible-) and nearly tackling you with hugs.
The two of you make quite a (TERRIFYING) power couple. No one’ll be a dick to you guys now!
Tumblr media
Arthur wouldn’t care that much, but he’d be a little intimidated.
But he’s keeping that information in his back pocket. He’s a rather scrawny guy, so knowing you can back him is very useful.
He asks you where and why you learned immediately. Of course, no judgment whatever you say, but if it’s for some more… unpleasant reasons he’d like to know.
Definitely encourages you to get better! It’s becoming a more and more rare skill these days!
Tumblr media
Francis would not care that much personally, but he would totally admire you a lot for it!
Learning a skill like that would either take a lot of struggle or a lot of effort, either way, respectable.
As long as you don’t beat up people in front of him, he generally doesn’t care. He considers fighting for stupid reasons very uncivilized.
You can try to drag him along when you work out, but I’ll tell you now, he is not doing anything. He’ll run alongside you, but that is the extent of it. If you want him to help you practice, he’ll do it while complaining.
Tumblr media
Yao would like this quite a lot! In his younger years, he was a fighter as well, so maybe you two can teach each other some tricks!
Of course, the way he learned to fight is very traditional, so he may get on your ass about “wrong posture” or whatever.
Also, he can’t go for very long without getting tired anyway. He loves you for your energy but he cannot keep up-
Surprisingly, Yao would be pretty supportive of you getting in random fights though. Even if the reason is stupid, he’ll still be cheering from the sidelines.
Tumblr media
Oh boy! Ivan may not be much of a fighter, but he’s strong as well! Maybe you two can work out together?
He won’t say anything at first, but he definitely worries about whether you had to become good at it.
Normally he’d beat up people for you, but now maybe you could do the same for him?? He’s swooning so hard.
Like America, you two are gonna be the most intimidating people in the room. Power couple (with mostly good intentions. you may be a bad influence on him to start solving more problems through violence)
Tumblr media
Oh thank god, Feliciano cannot put up a fight to save his life. But now that he has you, he doesn’t have to!
Wait, you’re good at fighting, so you must be strong right? Can you pick him up?? Please??
But he does worry about you getting in fights… you may be tough but you’re still his darling! He does secretly love patching you up though
He prefers words, but that just means you two balance each other out! Weak and strong, a perfect match!
Tumblr media
Ludwig is also quite a formidable fighter as well, so you two have something fun in common!
He’d definitely appreciate someone who can hold their own. He thinks it says a lot about your character! Very encouraging and supportive.
Definitely brings you along to the gym so you two can practice together. If you’re better at specific styles, you can always teach him.
Just… don’t get in any street fights, won’t you? It stresses him out immeasurably.
Tumblr media
Oh cool. Kiku is not very strong, but he knows a lot about the art of fighting, so he finds you quite interesting for it.
Give a little demonstration, won’t you? Even if it’s awkward :}
He’d love for you to teach him. He’s always been just average physically, so maybe with your motivation, he’ll finally be more like Ludwig!
But he’d hate you getting in fights, just think of the attention it’ll attract! Please, try to keep your sparring in the gym.

From the Tabletop #8
When last we left our questionably-competent D&D gang, we decided to venture out, due to Kaz receiving a vision/message from Granzeen the Gale, a patron spirit of the chicken tendies, asking Kaz if he wanted revenge for his father's murder. This resulted in: Kaz: Yeah, I guess? Granzeen: I will show you that which you most desire! Needless to say, Kaz has some commitment issues. At the same time, Laguna also had a vision, whereupon he was told he had become a Hero of Yzzmitt, which leads to its own thing a little later on. Imagine a thin girl who loves arts and crafts, her hair tied back in a bandana, clad in apron, and work clothes. Her arms end in useless bulbs rather than hands, but her hair is amassed with dozens of hands that extend from the locks. So, the next day, following the directions issued in the vision, we came across a small, pink, fluffy ball of a creature, about the size of a volleyball with a tuft tail. Kaz: I'MMA KILL IT! Needless to say, Kaz has some mental issues. So, as anyone with a GM as mischevious as ours already predicted, this little fluff ball was one tough piece of fluff, and shaved off 3/4 of Laga's HP in one terrifying firebreath, causing her to flee down the road. Turns out a setting named "DinosaurLand DragonWorld" might actually have dragon-type creatures in it. To say nothing of the fact that Kaz just attacked the thing without doing any prep work or seeing if it was naturally hostile or not. So, tails figuratively between our legs, we venture onward and arrive at a cave, all the while stalked by some weird shadow creatures we couldn't quite make out. Inside, we attempt to switch to stealth mode. Laga and Laguna actually have low-light vision, and take point. Kaz is an idiot and asks if he can fly in the 7' high cave. Laga is then terrified by a small bundle of rubber spiders, dropped on her from a trap, causing this Amazon of a woman, mace, shield, armor, the whole 9 yards, to shriek like a small girl. As the GM said, this set the tone for the entire trip. Around the first corner, a dart trap sprung, hitting Laguna, who to his credit was trying to sneak by. He was laid out on his back, drooling and spacing out as a technocolor whirlwind became the sum of his audio/visual experience. Laga attempted to call out whoever was responsible, proudly declaring her name (and failing her charisma roll), whereupon two chittering figures declared their love of G-pop and fleeing into the dark, much to Laga's consternation. Around here we also found some phat loots, including an old-style oil lamp, an ancient coin, and a wand. Laga and Laguna conclude that it'd be best to wait until we had better conditions to assess them and they pocketed them. Eventually, we get a lay of the first corridor, which sectioned off into several other paths. We decide to head north, as we felt a wind coming from that direction. Then all Hell broke loose. In the next room, we got to Indiana Jones our way to a maiden, strung up to a structure in the middle of the room. The floor tiles had draconic symbols on them, and the only one among us who could read them was the still-groggy Laguna, he got to play the hop-scotch to the death for us. Surprisingly, he made it rather well, and ultimately got to the maiden in question, whereupon slats in the walls opened and snipers started taking potshots at us, and the door behind us sealing shut. Left no option but forward, we had to run for it. We actually managed it with just scrapes and bruises, mostly because chicken nuggers just half-flew across the room and Laga just bolted. In the next room we ran into a much more considerable problem. Approximately 3 dozens kobolds and a powerful woman in the middle of the room, emitting cold air, as she was doing a workout routine. Deciding it best to tackle this via the diplomatic angle, Laga spoke first. It didn't take long for us to piece together that this woman was, in fact, a very powerful dragon. A very powerful dragon who was down an eyeball courtesy of one barbecue buffalo wing and his father. She was ready to just ice us and be done with it, and Kaz even briefly flirted with the idea of challenging her to a duel. I then had to point out that that was suicide. So Laga, flexing the "Us grrrls, amirite?" angle, talked down the dragon, whose name turned out to be Alba. "Her parents weren't terribly creative," ~GM. After coaxing it out of her, Laga learned that Alba secretly wished to visit Belly Button, but wanted a regal, splendid dress to do so. Laga agreed to retrieve it for her, but was given a three-day deadline to pull it off. Kaz then decided to open his beak for some stupid reason, and offered to just knit her a dress. Laga immediately declined that plan, on account she liked living. So they returned to town to try to figure out the dress situation. Laguna and Kaz were absolutely no help in this regard, as Laga was left to her own devices in figuring out who she could petition to create the piece. After being turned down by the best artisans in town and even being offered a Rumpelstiltskin deal, Laga eventually asked Laguna to assess the artifacts we had found previously. Upon invoking the coin's power, we ended up summoning a Fallen, a class of angel, who happened to maintain the purview of clothing. Lucky us! So, Laga gave the specifications because there is no way in hell she was going to trust the others to do so. Dress in hand, we returned to the cave once more, in largely uneventful fashion since Kaz didn't randomly punch any wildlife this time. Ecstatic at her new duds, Alba and some of her draconic friends joined us in a return flight as they began to explore the town with glee - mostly because Laga begged their assistance with the now-impending disaster timer. They also heckled Laguna who, despite having some draconic heiritage had no kobolds to call his own. That, as they said, was so sad. Around this point, we concluded this session and I had to come to terms with one problem I had: Laga was kind of boring. So I consulted with the GM and he liked my new idea, so I created Blackbe, a Paladin of the Warcur people, who was planescaped to this world by powers ill-understood, alongside his sister and nephew. So, at the next session's start, the party was introduced to him, because apparently Kaz started crashing at Laguna's house? Kind of news to me, but Laguna flagged Blackbe down out of the otherwise-empty street because it was the day of the calamity and any sale would be better than none. After an... interesting roll, Laguna offered Blackbe the "GODPIECE", a diamond-studded codpiece worth of armor, which Blackbe politely declined, after his sister speculated this pawn shop was a dealer in questionable goods. Blackbe, having only just become aware of the disasters and the timer, petitioned Laguna and Kaz to accompany him, mostly because any help he could get would still be better than none at all. So they quickly got Cherri and Duran (aforementioned sister and nephew) to safety as Blackbe lead the charge, quickly joining ranks with other teams of soldiers awaiting the fight ahead. Blackbe, being noble among Warcur families, gave a rousing speech about the disaster ahead forging ties between races - that all men who stood together in this dark hour were brothers, regardless of race or standing. This got the troops pretty excited and got the attention of a Warcur lady, Jiraca, a druid who threw in with the team as the first disaster struck: A colossal beast, Thorophaganax, preluded by dozens of small insect-like drones who we met at the base of a hill as their number attempted to plow into it. Blackbe, the first to charge into the fray, declared that s/he who got the smallest number of kills would buy drinks for the party, as Jiraca joined the game with a few kills all her own. Then Laguna unleashed the fuckin' thunder and just rained fire on them, wiping out over half of them in as little as two turns. Being a sorcerer does that. Blackbe: Friend Laguna, I feel I might need to get you more than a drink when this is over... The small fry dealt with, we then had to deal with a lightning-spitting giant. Ever see "Nausica of the Valley of the Wind"? Like that. But more lightning. Kaz then proceeded to completely derail the flow of the game but essentially taking five turns in one go. We actually had to stop the boss fight and call up rules for how monks are supposed to operate in 5e. Turns out, he was basically trying to bend/break all the rule and use all his attacks in one go and not even so much the tribute of a ki point to be seen. We then had to explain that extra attacks and bonus actions were taken as a one-and-done affair and could not be multiplied in the same turn. And he got really petty and douchey about it, especially after he declared he lodged his spear all the way into the Thoroph, which I'm calling it for short, and couldn't actually get it back due to not understanding how suction works. And barbed things. Funny enough, despite Kaz's stupid dex-based pinwheel of death, Blackbe, with two attacks per turn as a Paladin, was able to empower and strike for way, way more damage than Kaz. See, Blackbe uses a greatsword, which has a higher damage floor than most, I have several ways of empowering my strikes, and due to a specialty I get as a Paladin, I can reroll damage results that have 1s and 2s in them. This was also after the fact that I am a moron and wasn't calculating my strength mod into my damage results, and yet I was still belting out more damage. Which says something. With some concerted effort, we struck down the disaster, which ultimately reset the timer for 3 additional days. Not a great deal of time, but a reprieve nonetheless. At this point, we learned Laga had fully embraced the G-pop star life and had taken to pursuing her new career with some level of success. At this point, Alba, who had joined in the battle per her promise, demanded that Blackbe and company take responsibility for the promise that Laga made, concerning some inter-dragon politics. Namely a gold dragon who, quote, "Makes fun of [her] all the time". Agreeing, the party made preparations for departure the following day. Blackbe explained that, upon his sudden arrival in this world, he made fast friends with 7 warrior comrades, who battled alongside him against a goblin incursion they suddenly ran across. And he explained that, since they were headed north towards the Twin Peaks, hoped to meet at least one of them again soon. More on them next time. The next morning, a series of strange injury/illness fell over the townsfolk, as Blackbe rushed to treat as many as he could. It was almost as if they were being violently struck by an unseen fist, so Blackbe began to investigate. Along his way he met with a well-armored man, named Garman. He, too, was investigating the crisis and after exchanging notes, became another fast friend of Blackbe's. Garman was Lucius's player's new character, who also decided to release the A-Men character for a new idea: a dual-classed Ranger/Rogue, with an intense racial hatred against Kobolds. Think "Goblin Slayer, but kobolds", and you're on the right track. And with that high note, I break here. Come back in the future for my D&D adventures such as: Kaz gets his ass royally handed to him by a gel cube, Garman mathematics (always equals KOBOLD), Blackbe is declared the team's face and the hero the world both needs and deserves, and Laguna is tricked by literally the most obvious lie in the world. See you there!

The Totality: Rihanna | ELLE Magazine
Let’s just call Rihanna what she is: the coolest woman on the planet—with beauty, talent, attitude, and personal style to spare. Here, the global megastar answers questions from a cross-section of her famous fans.
Somewhere between releasing her debut single “Pon de Replay” (to blitzkrieg effect) in 2005 and sitting down to discuss international education with Emmanuel Macron in 2017, Rihanna has become much more than a pop star. The music is still absolutely vital, yes—her eighth album, Anti, which has been kicking up dust on the dance charts since it dropped last year, was deemed by Forbes to be one of the most successful recordings of all time—but as an icon, she represents something far greater: what a woman can achieve when she tackles her career, and her life, on her own terms. Rihanna is always fearlessly, unapologetically herself, whether she’s making maverick fashion choices on the red carpet, calling out body shamers, or adding yet another unmistakably RiRi-stamped endeavor to her string of (singer-actress-designer-entrepreneur-philanthropist-etcetera-etcetera) hyphenates. We can now add beauty mogul to that list.
The singer has poured her uncompromising attitude into a much-awaited makeup line, Fenty Beauty by Rihanna, poised to launch with a big bang of 91 products on September 8 at Sephora (expect lines) and on the brand’s website (Internet = broken). Its focus, perhaps surprisingly from a practiced maquillage peacock who has been known to rock vivid blue and ink-black lipstick with defiant flair, is gleaming, satiny, flawless skin, built around an assortment of user-friendly highlighting and contouring sticks, and a whopping 40 shades of foundation. “The biggest void I’ve found in the industry is the lack of variety in foundation shades,” Rihanna tells us. “That’s one of the things that was most important to me—to make sure everyone was included.” It’s a nod, too, to the complexion-perfecting gateway drug that ushered the Barbados native into beauty in the first place: “Foundation was the first product I ever owned,” she says. “It was like magic, and I’ve been in love with makeup ever since.”
Tumblr media
Avidly hands-on throughout the collection’s development, Rihanna helmed everything from the playful name selection (there’s a gold powder highlighter, for instance, dubbed Trophy Wife) to the packaging, which, like its creator, is multifaceted, with tough, graffiti-inspired outer boxes opening onto sleek, streamlined, sweetly pretty individual products. “There are plenty of options out there when it comes to makeup,” Rihanna says. “My approach with Fenty Beauty was just to do things my way.”
19 QUESTIONS FOR RIHANNA, FROM 20 OF HER FRIENDS AND FANS
Tyra Banks, Model/Entrepreneur: You’re so successful and surrounded by people who want to please you. Who gives it to you straight?
Rihanna: For me, it’s my mama. They all fake, LOL, and fired!
Eminem, Rapper: You don’t seem like you’re ever thinking about trends when you go in the studio, yet you end up setting them. What are you looking at when you start your recording process?
Rihanna: I rarely know exactly what I want to do, but always know exactly how I want it to make me feel. Feeling always leads the sound!
Wyclef Jean, Rapper: The last time I saw you was at the World Cup. If you could be any football player in the world, who would it be?
Rihanna: Cristiano Ronaldo. But then again, Beckham did marry Posh Spice.
Tumblr media
Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, Designers, Oscar de la Renta: What’s your best vintage find?
Rihanna: On New Year’s Eve, 2016, I bought this costume from 1952 that was worn in the movie Singin' in the Rain.
“Rihanna is today’s most fascinating performer, a mysterious amalgam of amiable warmth and glittering charisma. With her keen creative eye for line and color, she has become a fashion icon, like Audrey Hepburn. Yet she is a tempestuous wild child and international adventuress, like Ava Gardner. Most importantly, as an artist in this overmechanized age, she bravely draws on deep wells of pure emotion, endearing her to millions of fans worldwide.” —Camille Paglia,Author/Critic
Tricky Stewart, Record Producer: Do you remember the first time a crowd gave you goose bumps singing all the lyrics to your song in concert?
Rihanna:  Yes! I was on tour, and the whole crowd started singing “Take a Bow” word for word…to the point that I couldn’t even sing. They performed the entire song for me.
April Bloomfield, Chef: What do you cook when you want a little comfort?
Rihanna: Bajan macaroni pie, which is our version of a baked mac ’n’ cheese.
Zac Posen, Designer: What’s your secret family recipe?
R:It’s a secret! LOL. But they make a mean “cook-up” and pepper pot. Both are Guyanese recipes.
Jacquie Aiche, Jewelry Designer: What’s your favorite body part?
R: Well, my favorite body parts on pretty much any woman are the collarbone and shoulders.
Charli XCX, Singer/Songwriter: What’s your ultimate karaoke song?
R: Bon Jovi, “Livin’ on a Prayer”; Journey, “Don’t Stop Believin’ ”; Brandy and Monica, “The Boy Is Mine.”
Tumblr media
"Rihanna brings ‘global gumbo’ to the culture. Her voice unites the world through positive music vibes." —Wyclef Jean, Rapper
Danielle Steel, Best-Selling Author: I love your shoe passion, especially your collaboration with Manolo Blahnik. How much of the designing do they let you do?
R; They really give me all the creative freedom I could ask for, but of course I have this unique opportunity to work with Mr. Blahnik himself, so his expertise is always more than welcome!
Kelly Fields, Chef (Willa Jean, New Orleans): Your preferences in fashion and art appear to embrace the entire scale of highbrow/lowbrow—which is how I like to cook. I’d love to know if your preferences in munchies run along that same scale?
R: You mean KFC on a private jet is not normal?
Tumblr media
Laverne Cox, Actress: You’ve had so many iconic fashion moments and take so many risks. The CFDA Awards Adam Selman dress in 2014—what gave you the courage to take that risk that was so perfect and elegant yet daring?
R: Dear Laverne, I took advantage of my titties before they go south. I saw my window, and I took it.
Pharrell Williams, Musician/Producer: You’re a pluralist in every sense of the word. Did you always have these dreams to do so many things, in addition to being an artist? Or have you just figured that out along the way that there are other things you can do very well?
R: I’ve always been a dreamer…or let’s just say I kept my options open. In my heart, I knew singing was gonna be in my future, but I considered psychology, hairdressing, banking, teaching, acting, modeling, aviation, and philanthropy. I just didn’t know I’d pretty much be doing all of these things eventually!
Gary Ross, Director, Ocean’s 8: What’s the first thing I should do when I get to Barbados?
R: [Fast-food] Chefette and a rum punch!
"I love Rihanna. I love that she is herself with no apologies. Her sense of style and self is unique. I love how she transforms herself with each album, each campaign. Always evolving. A true icon." —Venus Williams, Tennis Champion
David Copperfield, Magician: I’m not kidding, this is a real offer: I can make you disappear and reappear anywhere in the world. Where do you want to go, and why?
R: Ten minutes before I lost my virginity…and I’m holding you to that offer. LOL.
Emilio Vitolo, Restauranteur (Emilio's Ballato, New York City): What’s the name of the soup dish that’s the most popular in our region of Italy?
R: It’s my favorite on your menu...pasta e fagioli.
Tumblr media
A$AP Rocky, Rapper: Tupac, Bob Marley, and Time: Fuck? Marry? Kill?
Shit, well, we stay killing Time. Fuck Tupac. Marry Bob, duh.
Olivia Wilde, Actress: What’s the most valuable mistake you’ve learned from?
No cheese for Jay Brown before a flight.
Patricia Field, Stylist: Would you consider having a cocktail with me sometime in the near future? I’d like to get to know you better. (Not hitting on you.)
Your place or mine?
"Rihanna’s MTV 2016 VMA performances were groundbreaking, paradigm- shifting moments in female swag. She represents badassery, positive self-esteem, and in a great way. She is powerful and vulnerable simultaneously, which makes her a revolutionary. Yes, she’s sexy, but once she’s got your attention, I don’t think you can ignore what she’s saying to you: She is curated and deliberate without feeling staged, and her intent is as real as anything out there. I respond to her as a writer, a woman, and a fan.” —Courtney Kemp, Showrunner/Creator, Power (Starz)
HERE, RIHANNA'S INSIGHT AS THE PROPRIETOR OF FENTY BEAUTY
ELLE: When did you first wear lipstick?
Lipstick always got me in trouble. Whether it was at home as a kid, or my early teenage years in my career, I always had the urge to wear it. So I broke all those rules. Now lipstick is like my li’l secret weapon!
What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done/tried for beauty? Would you do it again?
A corset! I’d do it again, though. I’d wear it every day if I could make it out alive!
Tumblr media
What makes you feel dressy/“done,” beautywise?
My finishing touch is usually my highlighter. I love highlighter—it just adds this sense of fantasy to any look.
"What is incredible about Rihanna is that in a world facing a deadening crisis of leadership and the constant negation of creative efforts, her music globally moves and inspires us to be completely alive without restrictions or prohibitions." —Richard Phillips, Artist
Of all the celebrities you’ve met, who smells the best?
[Photographers] Inez and Vinoodh! Inez smells delicious. She actually gifted me her scent, because I always asked her about it.
Tumblr media
Who’s your hair idol?
This is probably confusing to most, but it’s in between Toni Braxton from back in the day with all her short haircuts…and Cindy Crawford. She had the most effortless yet stunning hair.
Who’s your makeup idol?
I have to go with Veruschka. She made makeup look like silk!

Behind the Scalpel #2 - Dar’s journey with cover design
Tumblr media
Hey there, traveler!
Today I’d like to share a personal story concerning both the woes of being a writer, my mentality on self-publishing, and our current project. This is the story of how I created the cover for our WIP.
To tackle a few things heads up, I’m not a complete amateur when it comes to graphic design, however, I am only scraping the surface. I’ve never received any education in graphic design but it became a kind of guilty pleasure for me as soon as I found the magic of MS Paint, so I’ve got some years of self-education, reading up on the topic and long hours of just d*cking around with graphic software behind my back.
Given that, I’d only recommend doing the cover yourself if you know what you are doing or you don’t have any other options – me personally falling in the latter category. We are trying to self publish with little to no funds, to begin with, and thus have to make some tough decisions. One of them is the fact that we can’t afford to hire a professional cover designer, so I either do it myself or not at all. Since giving up is not an option, I decided to do it or die trying. Here’s how I did it.
Basically, I created the first version of the cover before we finished the first draft (not the first English draft, the first draft in our native tongue.) All I knew that it’s shaping up to be a desert fantasy, so I need something with that feeling. So as every newbie would, I hit up google, typed „desert fantasy art” and clicked images. I found a nice looking art, added a black border, slapped a title onto it and this is what arose from that witches’ brew of a design:
Tumblr media
So, there are a couple of problems with this. First, it is boring. You look at it, admire the art for a splinter of a second, and go on about your business. Second, which keeps coming back, is the genre. This one looks like a Jane Austen romance when it should scream epic adventure and magic and stuff. The third problem was the method I acquired the art because Google Images is rarely a place to browse for royalty-free stuff you’d use on a book cover. But I was content with this for a while, shoved it into a folder on my laptop, and kept writing the book.
Months pass by and we both started to lose enthusiasm and needed something to fire us up once more. I remembered the rush of excitement when I designed the first cover, so I got on my trusted laptop to do it all over again – this time trying to follow the law and use royalty-free images. But learning from the first cover, I wanted to do something exciting, something someone would click on out of curiosity, so I started browsing digital artworks on Pinterest. This is actually good advice for anyone looking for inspiration – but inspiration only. Don’t go wildly right click-saving things from there, or you run into the royalty thing again.
What I found were fractals. If you’re not familiar with the term, fractal arts are procedurally generated, mostly geometrical images which look trippy as fuck and if an artist gives their personal touch, they can look spectacular. To give a great example, I searched for royalty-free (see? I’m smart :3 ) fractal images and found this:
Tumblr media
As you can see it is really eye-catching and I haven’t seen this style used as cover before, so I thought I can make something different. I got to work, added shaded borders, and a more fancy title and created cover v2.0.
Tumblr media
Way to go! But there were still problems with this. We realized that one of our strong suits as writers is painting a vibrant world that’s easy to imagine yourself into. By using a lot of different senses in the descriptions one could almost feel the heat of the desert, the cooling sea breeze from the port, or the smell of roasting shashlik – but this cover didn’t give off this vibe. It felt cold, brittle (hence the silver) so it still needed a few changes. That was pretty easy to fix, I just tampered with the color temperature and voile! Cover design v2.1 was born:
Tumblr media
Now, this was hinting at the right vibe, it looked almost like a quicksand swallowing the title which was all nice and good, but this was about the time we run into a bit of advice we then saw everywhere – research the market. Now, dear readers, what the fuck does that mean? It took me a while to figure out, but what people mean by that is to go on Amazon or Barnes&Noble or wherever you satiate your bibliophile thirst and look at other successful book covers in your genre. So I did, browsed Amazon best-selling fantasy books for hours, and noticed a few trends. First, most fantasy books didn’t use a fancy font, those were mostly for romance novels. The second is, pretty much every fantasy (by that I mean the myriad of Brandon Sanderson, George R.R. Martin and Anthony Ryan books) used some kind of image in the middle instead of just the title. Armed with this knowledge I jumped back on GIMP and got to work once again.
Tumblr media
Now it was looking more like the big names, an epic but simplistic font, a thing in the middle (in our case a two-headed viper bracelet, a piece of important jewelry from the book) and even a quote. Now was the time for me to send it to my taste-testers: my younger sisters, both book nerds in their own genre.
And they told me they liked the previous font better. They found the snake and the quote a nice touch, but the font was too bland. Because at this point I had no idea who to trust with advice, I rushed to correct it and come up with a new, better version combining those two elements. So after a bit of designing again, cover v2.3 got birthed into this shining world.
Tumblr media
Looking fancy, eh? This was the time I learned how to create a golden text effect without photoshop (yeah, I forgot to mention, photoshop would eat up, chew, and spit out the 4 GB ram in my 6 years old laptop, so I use GIMP instead). This was almost perfection… almost. We were content with this for a few weeks, right before we ran into several niche fantasy covers we quite liked that were more on the simplistic side, with a dark background, a fancy title and a beautiful border frame. We thought if it caught our eyes, it would catch other people’s attention too, so the designing bug bit me again and I opened GIMP for the umpteenth time.
The idea was simple: create a black background with the fractal as a border, an artistic title and maybe some extra touches. This was the point we regressed back into the black and silver style because black and gold was too mainstream. It was more difficult to get right, but eventually I came up with this:

This time I was sure I hit perfection. It reminded me somewhat to Game of Thrones, it had two viper heads and a simplistic style. Around this time we found our first somewhat useful beta-readers, so I was brave enough to show them. The answer was in line with our reoccurring theme of being unable to paint a clear genre image: they thought it looked like a contemporary girl novel with some spooky snakes for a bizarre cavalcade effect. I’m gonna admit it, it felt like shit but being an author is about constant growth and learning from bitching beta-readers, so I decided to do some more research. I found a couple of useful resources, to be precise, a blogpost from Neha Yazmin (link here: https://nehayazmin.blogspot.com/2020/05/Book-cover-design-tips.html ) and a youtube video by Just Angus (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SgJV8wGkcI). They’re both useful and entertaining, so go give them a look. We realized looking beautiful to us means nothing if people pick up the book and think about the wrong genre, thus they will be disappointed by the book by default. We had to make it look like an adventurous fantasy set in a magical desert, so I had to change my entire mindset.
I was browsing Pinterest one evening and found the magical looking Arabic calligraphy, precisely Take the Leap by Everitte Barbee. With a rush of enthusiasm, I grabbed the image and ran away with it, not thinking about some important things, and created this.
Tumblr media
Now things were shaping up to be almost pitch-perfect. The font was fancy but fantasy-esque, the style was eye-catching but minimalistic, it screamed middle-eastern and it was unique. But remember the important things I shrugged off? One of them was the royalty-thing again. Turns out this image (or to be precise the ink and paper version of it) was already used in another book cover. Also, Arabic calligraphy uses words from the Quran. Now, I’m not a very religious person and I know next to nothing about Islamic religion. As much as I adore ancient Arabic aesthetics, I think it’s common courtesy to leave things you don’t understand a word of alone and not use them obliviously in commerce. But I believe I hit something on the head with this silhouette filled with fractal art, so I searched for some free stock images until I found what I was looking for. So, at the end of this surprisingly long wall of text about almost a year of redesigns and trial-and-error style approaches, I’ll leave you with our final cover (for now at least). I hope you found it entertaining and somewhat useful, if you have any questions or even critique, please, let me know in any way you prefer. Bah, it was nice to get this off my chest. Stay sharp, travelers!

Indivisible Turns Friendship Into Strength in This Charming Indie Title
I was able to play the first demo of Lab Zero’s and 505 Games' Indivisible a few years ago on the PS4, some time after it got funded on their IndieGogo. There was a lot to be done in terms of fleshing out the world, but the team behind Skullgirls already packed a lot of depth and character in that small snippet I played. From its unique take on action RPG combo gameplay to the personality I could feel from its eclectic cast, I couldn’t wait to see the world of Indivisible fully realized in its official release on all major platforms. Fast-forward to 2019, and Indivisible has indeed finalized itself as a charming and challenging action platformer indie title, though not without a few kinks in the machinery.
Jumping off from a gorgeous Studio TRIGGER x Titmouse-animated opening (and a Gurren Lagann-esque prologue to boot), you play as Ajna, a young and rambunctious youth who grew up undergoing strict training from her father. After her village comes under attack by an evil army, Ajna embarks on a globe-trotting quest for vengeance and answers to her parents’ mysterious past.
Along the way, she meets several warriors, mages, and other helpful companions who she can somehow store within her mind and can summon to aid her in battle. Each one provides different benefits for her both inside and outside of battle, and the choices you’ll have with your party members will eventually become overwhelming.
When I first played the demo way back when, I could already tell a lot of thought went into crafting both platforming and combat. That novel game design was certainly retained in the final product. Using a variety of tools and weapons in the overworld, Ajna can slide, wall jump, and bust her way through obstacles to find tons of hidden treasures. There are a lot of clever and intuitive platform challenges to be had as your skills expand. But be prepared for a lot of trial and error.
In my experience playing thus far, some of the platforming was more than a little aggravating. While it can be really fun to scale up walls with your axe and create platforms out of monsters, I found myself punished by tiny miscalculations. More often than not, I knew exactly how to get somewhere and what to press to make my way there. If I was a millisecond late with my button presses or took one extra step off course, I’d either get stopped in my tracks or lurch off the edge of a cliff and back to square one. Being an action platformer, I'm willing to accept the game will demand a lot from your reflexes and Ajna's growing traversal abilities. I’ve had similar run-ins with arduous platforming in other classic indie titles like Shovel Knight and Guacamelee. It takes time to hone your reflexes and stick your landings, and knowing how to manipulate each of your abilities is an acquired skill. I've gotten plenty angry at the game, but with as far as I've gotten, time and patience will pay off.
Combat, of course, is a whole different beast. Indivisible features a ton of strange and unique enemies that you’ll fight using Ajna’s growing powers and the abilities of your diverse teammates. Your party members’ techniques vary widely between attacks, buffs, and healing, with each of your actions in battle coming with a cooldown. If you time it wisely, you’ll be able to keep enemies at bay and take them down with flashy, stylish combos.
While you’re waiting for your abilities to recharge, you’ll be wide open against enemy attacks. This is where blocking, one of the most crucial elements of the game, comes into play. With proper timing, you’ll be able to reduce the damage done to you, and if you’re absolutely perfect, you’ll even recover some health instead of taking hits at all. Of course, every enemy requires different timing, so you’ll have to be flexible with your combat.
Indivisible’s combat mechanics are pretty engaging. Battles are quick-paced and keep you on your toes, and often encourage you to try out different characters and play styles to see which one suits you best. You can either have a full team of attackers or have a healthy mix of offense, defense, and sweet tricks in battle. And the best part is that everyone’s stats are tied to Ajna’s, even when they’re not in your party. That means that everyone levels up together, which mitigates a lot of level grinding.
While battles can be fun and exciting, though, multiple enemies may prove a bit overwhelming. When you’re on the defense against several opponents at once, it can be difficult to keep track of who needs to block and what timing you’ll have to employ. It’s especially annoying when you run into a tiny enemy who deals a disproportionately-large amount of damage if you don’t block precisely. But like the platforming, practice makes perfect. If you embrace the learning curve, you’ll definitely start to improve and take on enemies more readily. Just be prepared for some blood, sweat, and tears along the way.
On its own, the gameplay of Indivisible provides a fun, if not a bit steep, experience as you progress. But it’s all wrapped up in a dazzling hand-drawn anime style. The overarching world takes remarkable notes various cultures and presents it in a visually stylish manner. It also helps that some of the landmark cutscenes in the game are beautifully animated by Studio TRIGGER of Kill La Kill and Little Witch Academia fame as well as Titmouse Animation! It’s a shame that they’re not all as stunning, as other key scenes boil down to dynamic pans of static images. Though as an IndieGogo project a few years in the making, it’d be pretty unreasonable for me to ask for everything to have that Studio TRIGGER look.
But even with challenging gameplay and pretty visuals, we haven’t even gotten to my favorite part about Indivisible! As you sidescroll through various cities and landscapes, Ajna will encounter lively and colorful characters, some of whom will join you on your quest. And if I had to choose one thing that Indivisible absolutely nailed in their game, it’s the people that fill the world (in more ways than one).
Even with more than 20 characters at your disposal at launch, many of them have compelling and even entertaining camaraderie with each other through snappy dialogue and surprisingly-funny jokes. Each of them even have unique and thoughtful character designs with none of them ever feeling too out of place within the enormous world. When not in battle or speaking with others, your party members are housed in Ajna’s Inner Realm, her psyche given form. Here, you can speak with each new comrade and companion, upgrade your stats, and more.
As Ajna’s comrades grow in number, each of them brings their own depth and weight to the group, not just in terms of gameplay but in a genuine sense of companionship. It also helps that a lot of the English voice-acting is fresh and exciting. Not every voice is pitch perfect, but I absolutely adore listening to everyone speak with each other and chime in on your quest every now and then. Among all the things I like about Indivisible, the thing I look forward to the most is finding new friends to add to my party.
Overall, Indivisible is a tough love indie title wrapped up in a gorgeous anime package. As an action platformer, it’s certainly challenging and rewarding enough for me to want to improve at it. I’ve grinded my teeth and hissed at my TV a number of times when trying to tackle the many obstacles, but a little pushback can be helpful in getting better. And to me at least, all that effort is worth it just to see Ajna and her buddies interact some more. It’s an age-old anime cliche, the idea of your friends being your power. Indivisible takes that classic trope and has made it into an enjoyable ride!

Pacific Angler Friday Fishing Report: February 2, 2018
OUTLOOK
This week we are watching the weather and the seemingly constant rain. Surprisingly enough the colder weather has helped the rivers settle in the last 2 days. We are optimistic about the weekend and in a number of cases we are more concerned about clear water making things challenging.
The Capilano went to near flood levels this week. We had solid reports before the jump in water and we are expecting good fishing when it drops. Check out this week’s Capilano report for more information.
The Squamish was high but dropped nicely early in the week due to cold temps. We were out on the weekend and the water was actually quite clear. This made things tough. Matt has a full report of what they saw and what we expect for this weekend in the Squamish report below.
The Vedder/Chilliwack spiked up the last couple days. We expect it to stay high but settle this weekend. The fishing, though not hot, has been consistent and we are approaching the best 2 months of the season. Alex has some details and updates in his report so make sure you don’t miss it.
On the saltwater front we have had a few boats out when the weather has cooperated and we have up-to-date saltwater info in the Vancouver Saltwater Fishing Report section this week.
January and February are a fun time for us at the shop not because we spend a ton of time on the water but because the sometimes ugly weather gives us an excuse to get on the fly tying vice and play. This winter we have brought in exciting new products from MFC, Puglisi, OPST and Lagartun. The guys have been having fun experimenting. You have seen how Jordan has been perfecting balanced streamers, Matt has been pumping out his buddy Mike’s, custom Trigger fish fly for CXI and this week we are going to look at what the master tier Dr. Dre (Andre) has been playing with.
Andre is known for his beach flies, classics and chironimids but with Jordan and Matt playing with streamers, he has caught the streamer tying bug too. He has been experimenting with a super cool material called CCT body fur to build great river bulltrout patterns and saltwater streamer. He has a full recipe for a fly that he is testing and we are optimistic that it will be a winner. Check it out in the feature product section.

Tying Essential Bulltrout Patterns Bulltrout / dollies ….. let’s just call them char are an interesting species. These fish have a diverse habitat, a very interesting life cycle and within the species they have very different characteristics in both size, color and feeding habits depending on their environment. The feeding habits are what we look at in this course.  This is a fishing course within a tying course. Instructor, Matt Sharp has caught bulltrout from here to Alaska will share with you an overview of his guide theories on fly selection for char in their different habitats. He will then tech you to tie three of his guide favourites. His sculpin pattern, the Cherokee intruder and then his go to intruder that has a name that is not fit for print.
This seminar is well suited to tiers who have taken our beginner course and have basic tying skills. Advanced tiers will find the first two patterns fairly easy but they can challenge themselves with variations of the last pattern. If you are an experienced tier you probably already know that sometimes the skill, effectiveness and beauty of many great guide flies comes from their simplicity. Students are required to supply their own vise, tools and materials. The CCT Body Fur Experiment I have not yet tested this pattern for any fishery but it is always fun to come up with a pattern with new materials from different tying companies. I did this pattern to showcase the use of the CCT Body Fur by Wapsi. I can’t wait to test it on the water but its featured this week as more of a concept piece. Use it and your imagination to adapt the pattern to fisheries that you love! You can choose various colors, tweak the size, have fun coloring them with permanent markers and even take the material and incorporate it into other styles of patterns.
If you have any questions come by the shop and I will gladly help.
Materials:
Tail: Marabou – white
Body: CCT body fur- white
Gills: Palmer chenille- copper/olive
Eyes: Stick on of your choice.
Hook: Streamer or saltwater hook of you choice.
Steps:
1. Tail: Tie in the white marabou
2.  Tie in the CCT body fur
3. Palmer the CCT just past the mid point of the hook shank, finish off and cut the excess
4. Tie in the palmer chenille and make 3 wraps and tie off
5. Tie in another piece of CCT body fur right after the palmer chenille and finish
6. Haircut: Start shaping the bait fish beginning from the top with sharp scissors
7. Pull the palmer chenille upwards (so you don’t cut it) and shape the bottom

FRESHWATER FISHING REPORTS
Chilliwack River Fishing Report Fishing has been a bit tough due to blown-out conditions this week but for those lucky enough to choose their fishing days it has been moderate to decent out there and the water is dropping as we write the report. Things have still been a bit patchy but numbers of fish and successful anglers have been steadily increasing when conditions are right.
With more rain coming we should see consistently moderate to high water levels, meaning bigger and louder presentations will be your go-to. However don’t be afraid to downsize especially between rain storms as the water drops and starts to clear. This weekend should be solid if you can pick your day and there is not too much rain. Get out there and get your line in the water. A fish won’t bite a dry hook!
Alex Au-Yeung
Capilano Fishing Report Water is at prime level on the Capilano River right now and there have been some positive reports. With the big push of water we expect more good steelhead reports this weekend.
If you can’t invest the time to hit the Vedder it is a great time to consider the Capilano. Take your drift gear out and look for walking speed water or pockets. Try anything from bait, plastic worms, gooey bob, corkies, spin N glos, and flies under the float. Also try to swing K-wobbler spoons as it will irritate them and get them to bite.
Once the water comes down a bit more, you can swing and strip flies or downsize your gear as it will be more productive than using the larger profile options.
Water level can change very fast on this river so watch out for the water level when you are fishing and as always release all steelhead with care as this system is very fragile. Stay safe out there.
Dustin Oh
Squamish River Fishing Report We had to tough day on the Squamish last Saturday. We covered a ton of water, fished hard and managed a few bites and a couple fish but it was a slog.
Clarity was the biggest factor. It was surprisingly clear and the fish shut down. I see this quite commonly late January / February with cold weather and snow in the mountains. Hooking a fish or two is not impossible but putting up any real numbers in low clear water is very challenging. I assume it is because the water is cold, there is way less food drifting down stream and the fish can see everything. All these factor are not good for nymphing or swinging flies. A spoon or a float can always drum up a fish but overall these kinds of conditions are not ideal.
Good job Stewart for grinding it out on a tough day.
The river surged on Sunday and looks as though it was the opposite problem. On Sunday from what I see on the graphs it probably coloured up and blew out. There might have been a nice window of good fishing early Sunday but ultimate I am assuming it was “out” around mid day. If anyone was out I would like to hear a report.
The river is now dropping but not as quickly as last week. There were ideal conditions on Tuesday and Wednesday. I suspect “good” conditions will carry into the weekend. Keep an eye on the river levels and weather. Note the “sweet spot” as the river dropped Tuesday and also note the levels on Saturday. I would consider them fishable but challenging.  In regards to road conditions it didn’t snow as much as we expected up top and the road, as of Saturday, was clear.
In clear conditions get stealthy with lighter leaders, smaller flies and fish the deep spots slowly. It’s a grind but another little side note: we seem to encounter more large rainbows on clear days and they can make a tough day worth it.
Good luck out there,
Matt Sharp
Stave River Fishing Report The Stave River has been producing some fish and is worth a look as well this week. It’s a short river so like the Capilano it is easy to cover in a half day. I recommend covering as much walking speed water as you can. When you have exhausted the walking speed water, hit the riffles and pocket water. Because the river is so short, you have a very high potential to at least be fishing over a steelhead. When fishing pocket water make sure to check your leaders often and take a hook file with you. It is easy to dull hooks and nick leaders in this kind of water. Though this river is short it has a good mix of water types to suit float fishing, fly fishing and spoon fishing.
Release all wild steelhead with care and be safe out there.
Dustin Oh
SALTWATER FISHING REPORTS
Vancouver Saltwater Salmon Fishing Report Well finally it looks like there is a little break in the wind coming up with winds light in the forecast for Saturday and Sunday, although that could change by Friday night. Lets hope not, I have had enough of the big wind forecasts. Too bad the rain won’t leave us alone as well, although I will take the 10-15 mm in the forecast over the 50 + mm from last weekend.
The fishing remained consistent this past week on our guided trips and with the winds knocking off this weekend I expect it to be on the busy side of things. Eddie is booked this weekend and I plan on doing some personal fishing too, so see you out there. Tough to pick a spot with the fish being well distributed through Howe Sound and with winds light it can be a good bet to hit Gabriola or Galliano.
Glow flashers and spoons with some glow on them in smaller sizes, like the Kingfisher 3.0 and Skinny G, have remained consistently productive. I was organizing some of my flashers last night and tying up some fresh spoon leaders and took some pictures to share with you. So here is what will be on my boat on Saturday.
Must have winter chinook flashers and some of my favorite spoons these past few months.
Crabbing and prawning have also been pretty good and we are right in the middle of prime time for winter chinook, so give Lars a call at 778-788-8582 to book your trip.
See you out there this weekend,
Jason Tonelli

Dive Head First Into People's Dreams In AI: The Somnium Files
Dreams are a strange aspect of living. Your brain just throws together bits of what you’ve experienced, some weird things from your subconscious, maybe parts of a movie you saw recently, and blends that all together to create something to pass the time while you sleep. Sometimes they can be fun, while other times they can be terrifying. Of course, dreams are kept to yourself unless you talk about them, but what would happen if someone could access your dreams and use that as information?
Jumping into people’s dreams is one of the big mechanics in AI: The Somnium Files, the latest game from Zero Escape series creator Kotaro Uchikoshi. As this is a crime drama adventure game, diving into people’s dreams is one of your investigative tools in order to try and solve a gruesome murder that was put on display. Are dreams enough to set this game apart from other crime stories that have come out this year? Will you get the same twists and turns you’d expect from an Uchikoshi game?
If you’re coming into this game with knowledge of the Zero Escape series, you’ll probably expect there to be two things here: puzzles and a wild story with multiple endings that funnel into a true ending. Both would be correct, however, the puzzles are not in the same ballpark. When you enter Somnium, which are the dream sections of the game, that is where the puzzles are housed. Surprisingly, they aren’t the kind of puzzles that you need to break out a notebook to keep track of information and to piece out a solution to. Instead, it’s more about you interacting with the dream world in order to take down mental locks that the subject you’re in has placed.
The caveat to this is that you only have six minutes to be in a person’s Somnium. That might seem pretty simple at first, but every action you do costs you time. For example, if you wanted to look at a picture, you’ll have a few options. If you picked to pick it up, that might cost you 20 seconds to do that action. That would be deducted from your six minutes. There are items you will be given for completing certain tasks or actions that will help reduce the time taken, but there are also items that will increase the time to make things more difficult. It becomes a tense filled race against the clock to break all of these locks before your time is up. You can stand still and cause time to move very slowly in order to try and think through a solution, but that still will cost you precious seconds in the long run.
The Somnium puzzles ramp up in difficulty as the game progresses, so while the initial ones might seem pretty simple to get through, your fight against time will become more challenging later on. These sections are also a change in gameplay as you control a character when you are in Somnium compared to when you are outside of it, you are moving an on-screen cursor in a more traditional point-and-click style. This allows for a nice switch in terms of gameplay by allowing you do something different instead of having the same style throughout the entire game.
Perhaps the biggest strength the game has is its writing. Uchikoshi is known for being a strong writer from his work on Zero Escape, PUNCH LINE, and the Infinity series. This might be some of the tightest writing he’s done since Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors. One reason is that the game does not go overboard with having branches in its story or having you repeat sequences you have already done over and over. Anytime you have to hear something you might have already heard, it’s quick and not labored on. The tight writing also allows for the story to just continuously keep you on your heels by not having too much fluff or filler to try and pad out length.
Where the writing truly shines is with its characters. Protagonist Kaname Date and his AI partner Aiba have amazing chemistry with one another. Even before the game tells you how long the two have been together, you immediately get the impression that they are longtime partners with how much they bicker with each other, poke fun at one another, and are essentially on the same wavelength. It’s that kind of trust and companionship you get when you truly know someone and even though Aiba is an artificial intelligence, it still works extremely well as Aiba and Date’s relationship is one of the best written parts.
Other characters as well get this same type of treatment. Mizuki feels like a young girl going through a rebellious phase of her life and trying to figure out what her relationship with Date is throughout the game. It’s the kind of writing you can look at and think, “oh, I was like that when I was a kid” or “I can absolutely buy that a twelve year old would think or react in that type of way”. Even going past the characters, the writing also tackles some serious subject matter and handles it with the right amount of weight and gravitas that it should be given.
It could be one thing if the game had well written characters, but the story left something to be desired. That’s not the case here as the overall story gets the same kind of treatment that the game gives its characters. With the overall mystery of trying to solve a murder where someone you know is left on display with their eye removed, the game is able to dispense new information in small chunks to leave you wanting more and more, while at the same time trying to piece together who was the true culprit and why. With all the twists and turns that you’ll encounter along the way, by the time you think you’ve got the answer, the game switches up the question.
The game also has a great look to it and a good cinematic feel for when it transitions in and out of cutscenes regularly. The Somnium areas all have a distinct feel from one another and gives you the impression that these are dreams with how disjointed from reality they can look. It’s not going to blow you away as a realistic graphical showcase, but in how it adapts to its artstyle, it absolutely works.
While there are many things that are of high quality with AI: The Somnium Files, there is one part that does fall short at times and that’s with performance. I played through the game on the Switch and haven’t seen the PS4 version, so I can’t say whether the same problems I had are there as well. Loading between days will often see some hitching during the animation when you see what day you’re on, the framerate can drop when trying to load and sometimes when loading images or video of other locations, they will take a few seconds too long, and I had the game crash on me twice failing to load. This was all on the 1.0 edition of the game, which means these are issues that could be patched later down the road, but for the time being, the Switch version is a bit of a mess performance wise.
Despite those issues, this is still a game you should definitely play this year. Considering it’s already been a good year for crime drama games with the release of Judgment, AI: The Somnium Files adds to that and continues the trend. The Somnium puzzles won’t beat you over the head by being tough, the writing is incredibly well done with a well-paced story that will keep you on the edge of your seat, and the characters are excellent. Having someone look into your dreams can be a scary proposition, but these dreams are ones you’ll want to dive right into.
