Liner Notes for Nusart Fateh Ali Khan's "The Supreme Collection Volume 1"
Tumblr media
Caroline Records is releasing "The Supreme Collection Volume 1" from Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan & Party on August 26, featuring liner notes written for this collection by Jeff Buckley in 1996.
In his notes, Buckley writes: "The first time I heard the voice of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was in Harlem, 1990. My roommate and I stood there, blasting it in his room. We were all awash in the thick undulating tide of dark punjabi tabla rhythms, spiked with synchronized handclaps booming from above and below in hard, perfect time. I heard the clarion call of harmoniums dancing the antique melody around like giant, singing wooden spiders. Then, all of a sudden, the rising of one, then ten voices hovering over the tonic like a flock of geese ascending into formation across the sky. Then came the voice of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Part Buddha, part demon, part mad angel... his voice is velvet fire, simply incomparable. Nusrat's blending of classical improvisations to the art of Qawwali, combined with his out and out daredevil style and his sensitivity, outs him in a category all his own, above all others in his field.... For the true Qawwali, all meanings of the music exist simultaneously and there is no need of purpose for religious dogma. There is only the pilgrimage to the light within the heart, which is the home of God. There is only a pure devotion and a fierce virtuosity to grow wings and soar through music. To plant a kiss on the eyes of Allah and then sing His loving gaze back into the hearts of Man."
In the wake of Buckley's recent tragic death by drowning, Caroline has dedicated this collection to his memory.
Nusart Fateh Ali Khan's "The Supreme Collection Volume 1"
THE COMPLETE LINER NOTES:
"The first time I heard the voice of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was in Harlem, 1990. My roommate and I stood there, blasting it in his room. We were all awash in the thick undulating tide of dark punjabi tabla rhythyms, spiked with synchronized handclaps booming from above and below in hard, perfect time.
I heard the clarion call of harmoniums dancing the antique melody around like giant, singing wooden spiders. Then all of a sudden, the rising of one, then ten voices hovering over the tonic like a flock of geese ascending into formation across the sky.
Then came the voice of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Part Buddha, part demon, part mad angel...his voice is velvet fire, simply incomparable. Nusrat's blending of classical improvisations to the art of Qawwali, combined with his out and out daredevil style and his sensitivity, outs him in a category all his own, above all others in his field.
His every enunciation went straight into me. I knew not one word of Urdu, and somehow it still hooked me into the story that he weaved with his wordless voice. I remember my senses fully froze in order to feel melody after melody crash upon each other in waves of improvisation; with each line being repeated by the men in the chorus, restated again by the main soloists, and then Nusrat setting the whole bloody thing alflame with his rapid-fire scatting, turning classical Indian Solfeggio (Sa, Re, Gha, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni) into a chaotic/manic birdsong. The phrase burst into a climax somewhere, with Nusrat's upper register painting a melody that made my heart long to fly. The piece went on for fifteen minutes. I ate my heart out. My roommate just looked at me knowingly, muttering, "Nusrat...Fa-teh...A-li...Khaaan," like he had just scored the wine of the century. I felt a rush of adrenaline in my chest, like I was on the edge of a cliff, wondering when I would jump and how well the ocean would catch me: two questions that would never be answered until I experienced the first leap.
That is the sensation and the character of Qawwali music, the music of the Sufis, as best I can describe it.
In between the world of the flesh and the world of the spirit is the void. The Qawwali is the messenger who leaps empty-handed into the abyss and returns carrying messages of love from the Beloved (Allah). These messages have no words, per se, but at the high point of a Qawwali performance, they come in bursts of light into the hearts and minds of the members of the audience. (Of course, by that time the whole house is either hanging from the rafters, or dancing.) This is called Marifat, the inner knowledge, and it is in the aim of the Qawwali tradition to bring the listener into this state: first through the beauty of the poetry and the weight of its meaning; then, eventually, through the Qawwali's use of repetition; repeating the key phrases of the poem until the meaning has melted away to reveal the true form to the listener. I've seen Nusrat and his party repeatedly melt New Yorkers into human beings. At times I've seen him in such a trance while singing that I am sure that the world does not exist for him any longer. The effect it has is gorgeous. These men do not play music, they are music itself.
The texts from which traditional Qawwals are sung come from the works of the great sufi poets: Bulle Shah (1680-1753), Shams Tabrez (d. 1247), Shah Hussain (1538-1599), and the great Sufi poet and scholar, Amir Khusrav (1253-1325), who was the inventor of Qawwali itself. These texts are devotional, of course, meaning poems of worship for Allah (Hamd) and the prophet Muhammad (N'ati-Sharif). There are also love poems (ghazals), where a more secular romantic interplay is happening between man and woman (which I can dig). The Qawwali's, however, see ghazals as a metaphor between Man and the Divine. They don't care about which meaning was derived from where. In the true Sufi way, through their music, any meaning that is needed by the listener is there for the listener to absorb. For the true Qawwali, all meanings of the music exist simutaneously and there is no need of purpose for religious dogma. There is only the pilgrimage to the light within the heart, which is the home of God. There is only a pure devotion and a fierce virtuosity to grow wings and soar through music. To plant a kiss on the eyes of Allah and then sing His loving gaze back home into the hearts of Man."

Purity of Heart in the Writings of the Philokalia:
What is the purpose of the asceticism and repentance? Again, it is a question the Fathers often asked of themselves, realizing how easy it is to make these practices ends rather the means to an end. As with so many things in life we can be investing a lot of energy, working very hard but lose sight of where we are heading or what we are seeking. In this the spiritual life (as we often make it) can become, strangely enough, analogous to an infatuation. The word infatuation comes from in-fatuous which means “false light”. Following a false light is the experience often had by those traveling in the desert at night. They believe they see a light in the distance and so set out to reach it and find warmth and comfort for themselves. However, it is actually an optical illusion and more often than not they would travel a great distance, expending much effort, only to realize that what promised light and warmth was nowhere to be found.
Thus, knowing what our immediate purpose and ultimate end are in the spiritual life is essential and there is no better place to begin than with those who walked the path, the “narrow way,” before us. In particular, there is a notable conversation on this very subject in the Philokalia. John Cassian and his fellow monk and friend Germanus travelled from Gaul to Egypt in the 4th century to live with the Eastern monks in the Nile delta in order to bring back the wisdom of the Hesychast tradition to the West. For nearly 20 years they lived with the monks and hermits in order to observe their way of life and learn from their collective wisdom.
In the first volume of the Philokalia we find Cassian and Germanus engaged in a discussion with Abba Moses who puts this question to them:
“‘You have given up your country, your families, everything worldly in order to embrace a life in a foreign land among rude and uncultured people like us. Tell, what was your purpose and what goal did you set before yourselves in doing all this?’ We replied: ‘We did it for the kingdom of heaven.’ In response Abba Moses said: ‘As for the goal, you have answered well; but what is the purpose which we set before us and which we pursue unwaveringly so as to reach the kingdom of heaven? This you have not told me.’ When we confessed that we did not know, the old man replied: ‘The goal of our profession, as we have said, is the kingdom of God. Its immediate purpose, however, is purity of heart, for without this we cannot reach our goal. We should therefore always have this purpose in mind; and, should it ever happen that for a short time our heart turns aside from the direct path, we must bring it back again at once, guiding our lives with reference to our purpose as if it were a carpenter’s rule. . . .If we forget this purpose we cannot avoid frequently stumbling and losing our way, for we will be walking in the dark and straying from the proper path’” (Philokalia, Vol. 1, 95).
Yet, what is this purity of heart of which Abba Moses speaks? Throughout the Philokalia it is described in various ways but most often the Fathers speak of purity as having God at the center of all of our thoughts, words and actions - having God as our one true desire, our beginning and end. Anthony Coniaris captures this with great clarity and simplicity:
“Purity of heart is not, first and foremost, a matter of avoiding all sorts of bad things; it is more so, desiring one supreme good above all. It is to want one thing, to focus our whole life on that one thing. What is that one thing? It is to know God, love HIm, and serve Him with all our mind, heart and soul and strength. When you are pure of heart, you place all your focus on what God wants of you. You want to be godly, a person of integrity. Your deepest desire is for God, not for the approval of people. Thus, purity of heart means loving all people and having a single supreme purpose and direction, not being double minded and unstable (James 1:8). Such purity or singleness of heart leads to illumination which, in turn, leads to glorification and union with God” (Coniaris, “A Beginner’s Introduction to the Philokalia”, 122-123).
Here we begin to see why purity of heart is so important, why it is the purpose of our asceticism, and something to which we must be entirely and exclusively consecrated. Alphonse and Rachel Goettmann in their work “Prayer of Jesus, Prayer of the Heart” express it ever so pointedly:
“To be on the way with a divided will, a small fraction of our energy and a mental hesitation, leads nowhere! We must break radically with our habits, with our way of being and introduce into ourselves - through a decisive act which shakes our whole nature - a new idea force, a consecration of our energies to Jesus Christ so complete that to live from Him becomes for our heart the only desire, and for our will the only activity in all that we live and do. . . .all life becomes a single adoration. Behind everything, there is the presence: we must feel it always and everywhere, awaken to its constant, intimate, enveloping nearness, intensely perceive it and commune with it in every moment. To turn all our emotions toward the presence of Christ is the most intense way of purification for the heart. Sooner or later ‘the pure in heart will see God,’ will feel Him, touch Him, hear Him, smell Him” (155-156).
Indeed, the more we are purified the more we shall see. This is captured in exquisite fashion by St. Maximus the Confessor who wrote in the 7th century:
“If, according to the words of the Divine Apostle, Christ dwells in our hearts by faith and in Him ‘are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge’, then in our hearts are to be found all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. And they (these treasures) are revealed to the heart according to the measure of purification of each person by the commandments. This is the ‘treasure hid in a field’ of your heart, which you have not yet found because of your inaction. For if you had found it, you would have sold all that you had and bought that field. But you have abandoned that field and work nearby, where there is nothing but thorns and thistles. Therefore, the Savior says, ‘Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.’ They will see Him and the treasures that are in Him, when they purify themselves by love and self-mastery; the more they are purified, the more (of God) will they see.”
Ultimately, the importance of purity of heart lies in our destiny. “The more of God’s love and mercy we receive, the more we commit ourselves to Him, the more we love Him and serve Him, the more we shall be able to experience His kingdom within us, and the better prepared will our eyes be for the brilliance of heaven” (Coniaris, 132).

Synopsis: Optimus Prime unveils to his fellow Autobots the completed project that he has had Grapple working on since he has been reactivated on Earth: Omega Supreme, the best line of defense of the Autobots base the Ark. Optimus Prime explains that Omega Supreme will defend their base while he and the other Autobots lead a potentially suicidal mission to collect data on the Constructicons ability to merge into Devastator so that they can utilize the same technology for their own purposes. When asking the gathered Autobots who will join this mission, Grimlock, and the other Dinobots refuse to help, citing that Optimus Prime is too much of a weakling to lead them and part company. The Dinobots departure changes nothing and Prime orders his Autobots to Transform and roll out.
While at the Decepticon headquarters, located in a Wyoming mining pit, the Constructicons are busy fortifying the base as Megatron and Shockwave continue to squabble over leadership over the Decepticons. The subject of their argument this time is Megatron's allowance to let Donny Finkleberg live among them. Donny has had enough with the Decepticons and is trying to think of a plan to escape, a seemingly impossible task since he is watched at all time by Ravage. Megatron then calls Starscream, Thundercracker, Skywarp, Rumble, Frenzy, Laserbeak and Buzzsaw to come to him and go to greet the new Decepticons traveling over the Space Bridge from Cybertron, leaving Shockwave and the others at the base.
The Autobots are on their way to the Decepticon base when Skids has a fender bender with a vehicle owned by the hot-headed Jake Dalrymple. Furious over this hit and run accident, Jake and his girlfriend chase after the Autobots hoping to "get even" with the "driver" of Skids, unaware of the danger that he is going to be putting himself in. Arriving at the outskirts of the Decepticon base, Prime orders Jetfire to distract the military, sending most of their forces after him so that Optimus and the others can smash through the military blockade to the Decepticon base. When Jake attempts to follow them he is stopped by the military.
Arriving at the Decepticons headquarters, the Autobots transform into robot mode and attack the battlements that have been put in place. While in northern Oregon, Megatron, and the others arrive at the site of the Space Bridge and are shocked to find Autobots there instead of Decepticons. They are about to attack when Soundwave radios in to tell him that all the Autobots are assaulting the Decepticon Base. Ignoring Shockwaves suggestions to return to headquarters, Megatron instead decides to attack the Autobot base believing it to be vulnerable to attack.
As the battle in Wyoming rages on, Skids proves to be the most ineffectual warrior, necessitating Optimus Prime to rescue him, suffering an injury to his side. Meanwhile, Shockwave has ordered the Constructicons to merge into Devastator and attack. This allows Bumblebee to scan the transformation data into a recorder, getting the Autobots all the information they need. While the Autobots fight off Devastator, Donny makes a break for it while the Decepticons are distracted. With the data they need collected, the Autobots then retreat, with Ravage (noticing that Finkleberg is gone) following not far behind. While at the blockade, Jake manages to talk the soldiers stationed there to leg him go.
Megatron and the others meanwhile have arrived at the Autobot base and are shocked to find Omega Supreme waiting for them there. Omega Supreme overpowers them destroying Starscream, Thundercracker, Skywarp, Rumble, Frenzy and Buzzsaw. He is about to destroy Megatron when Laserbeak picks up his commander and flies away. Back in Wyoming, Optimus Prime gets the report as they zip past the military blockade once again. Jake attempts to stop Skids, causing him to swerve out of the way, leaving him open to an attack by Ravage. Struck by one of Ravage's missiles, Skids is knocked off a cliff. Thinking him destroyed Optimus and the others race off the scene of the battle.
Megatron is returned to the Decepticon base, where Shockwave mocks his failure to take over the Autobot base and announces that he intends to take over the Decepticons. However, Megatron gets up and points out that Shockwave has also failed in allowing the trap to spring around him as well, pointing out that the Autobots must have had an ulterior motive to spring a hit-and-run operation on their base. He also mentions that even though they lost some of their warriors, more are coming to replace them and that they have pointed out to the Autobots that they can attack at any time. Realizing Megatron's words as truth, Shockwave then concedes and names Megatron the true leader of the Decepticons.
While back at the Autobot base, the other Autobots are rejoicing their victory, however Prime points out that they did lose Skids in the battle, and that in the future they must factor in human involvement in their continued battles with the Decepticons on Earth, as they can lead to unforeseen circumstances. As the Autobots mourn for Skids, they are unaware that despite his damage he is still functional, all be it trapped at the bottom of the cliff near the Decepticon base.

Barbie Reigns Supreme in Hollywood's 2023 Box Office: Surpassing $1.4 Billion Worldwide, but IMDb Ratings Tell a Different Story!
Tumblr media
As the curtains draw on 2023, Hollywood reflects on a year of diverse outcomes at the global box office. Amidst the fierce competition, Margot Robbie's Barbie emerged as the highest-grossing film of the year, surpassing even Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer. However, the triumph at the box office stands in stark contrast to the film's IMDb ratings. Image: Imdb/Barbie Only two films earned membership to the coveted $1 billion club in 2023. Barbie, facing off against Oppenheimer, triumphed with a staggering $1.44 billion, securing its place at the zenith of Hollywood's financial achievements. The second entrant into the billion-dollar league was The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which, despite mixed reviews, amassed a noteworthy $1.36 billion in global box office revenue. Let's delve into the top 10 Hollywood grossers of the year and explore their IMDb ratings: - Barbie - Margot Robbie's performance in this blockbuster garnered positive reviews from critics. While it soared to $1.44 billion at the box office, its IMDb rating stands at a modest 7 out of 10. - The Super Mario Bros. Movie - Despite mixed critical reception, the film featuring the voice talents of Chris Pratt and Anya Taylor-Joy secured a substantial $1.36 billion. Its IMDb rating matches Barbie's at 7 out of 10. - Oppenheimer - Led by Cillian Murphy, this biographical thriller narrowly missed the billion-dollar milestone, earning $952 million. Nevertheless, it received a commendable IMDb rating of 8.4 out of 10. - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 - This MCU installment, starring Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana, shone with positive reviews and an $845.55 million box office collection. IMDb rates it at 7.9 out of 10. - Fast X - Despite mixed reviews and underperformance considering its budget, the Fast Saga installment featuring Vin Diesel and Jason Momoa secured a spot with $704.87 million. However, its IMDb rating is a modest 5.8 out of 10. - Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse - This animated sequel surprised audiences with positive reviews and a substantial $690.51 million. Notably, it boasts the highest IMDb rating on the list, with an impressive score of 8.6 out of 10. - The Little Mermaid - Disney's live-action romantic fantasy, despite mixed reviews, earned $569.62 million globally. Its IMDb rating is 7.2 out of 10. - Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One - Tom Cruise's action film, praised by critics, underperformed with a lifetime business of $567.53 million. Its IMDb rating is 7.8 out of 10. - Elemental - Disney's animated romantic comedy received generally positive reviews, earning $496.17 million globally. Its IMDb rating stands at 7 out of 10. - Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania - Despite disappointment for MCU and unfavorable critic reviews, the film generated $476 million globally, with an IMDb rating of 6.1 out of 10. STUDY #1
“Reproductive Rights Without Resources or Recourse.”
“The U.S. Supreme Court declared procreation to be a fundamental right in the early twentieth century in a case involving Oklahoma's Habitual Criminal Sterilization Act, an act that permitted unconsented sterilization of individuals convicted of certain crimes.”
Researcher Kimberly Mutcherson highlights that this declaration is a “negative right,” meaning the courts legally remove the obstacles or burden to achieve procreation in outlawing coerced sterilization.
“The absence of a positive right to procreate reflects not just constitutional tradition but also a governmental and societal commitment to a longstanding set of reproductive hierarchies by which those who fall outside of the traditional framing of family too frequently find their procreative dreams hindered.”
U.S. social norms are a mechanism of prejudice that works jointly with the oppressive legal system of the courts to create a hostile environment for communities who do not have access to the financial and educational means necessary to raise a child in a healthy and safe environment and are not representative of the white hetero normative family unit.
“I argue that a positive legal right is morally necessary in the United States, given the profound significance of procreation, the current barriers to access to care, and the related issues of individual and societal justice.”
All individuals who want to have children and create a family must have access to realistic economic opportunities, affordable healthcare and fertility technologies, affordable childcare, and a safe environment. A favorable legal frame would guarantee proactive solutions to provide the means for children to be conceived and families to flourish. It is time to embrace family planning as a collective responsibility to nurture future generations and give them all the resources necessary for a promising future.

"BEFORE "WATCHMEN," BEFORE "MARVELS," BEFORE "KINGDOM COME" -- THERE WAS "SQUADRON SUPREME."
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on "Squadron Supreme" Vol. 1 trade paperback (I recently purchased a second edition copy), collecting the first 12 issues of the SS limited series that ran from 1985-'86, and published by Marvel Comics.
TRIVIA/INTERESTING FACT: Writer Mark Gruenwald's last will was that part of him be used in a comic book. His wife, Catherine Schuller made sure that after his remains were cremated, they were mixed with the ink used to print the first printing of this trade paperback (second picture above).
TPB OVERVIEW: "Another Earth's mightiest heroes! On a world much like our own, that planet's greatest superhuman champions are confronted by a society in ruins. Faced with the possibility of a new dark age for mankind, they choose the only course available to them - and take control of the world's governments themselves! Now they have one year in which to completely restructure human society. Can their plan succeed? Will a renegade member bring about their downfall? And what will happen when this Earth's mightiest heroes find themselves becoming its all-powerful, totalitarian overlords instead? Before "Watchmen," before "MARVELS," before "Kingdom Come" -- there was "Squadron Supreme," a deconstructionist parable of the super hero paradigm in a real-world setting considered by many to be the late Mark Gruenwald's finest work. The Ledge #545: New Releases
I am proud to present to you the final new release episode of The Ledge of 2022. It's been quite a year, full of fabulous new punk, power pop, garage, and indie rock. I'm now in the process of creating my "best of 2022" list that will be unveiled in two weeks.
Tonight's episode is truly a wordwide collection, as not only are there fabulous new tunes from the usual American and Canadian cities but there are trcks from Japan, Sweden, Italy, Spain, France, and the UK. There's also a great set of 90's shoegaze from Minneapolis that has just been compiled on a record called Southeast of Saturn, Vol. 2 on Third Man Records. As usual, there's also a fun little set of new tunes from our friends at Rum Bar Records.
I would love it if every listener bought at least one record I played on either of these shows. These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs. And if you buy these records directly from the artist or label, please let them know you heard these tunes on The Ledge! Let them know who is giving them promotion! You can find this show at almost any podcast site, including iTunes and Stitcher...or

Listed: Michael Bisio
Tumblr media
Equally adept with fingers and bow, double bassist Michael Bisio has a knack for the complementary gesture that makes another musician sound good. This may explain his enduring relationships with multi-instrumentalists Joe McPhee and Charles Gayle, drummer Tani Tabbal, and, most notably, pianist Matthew Shipp. But Bisio has also been a bandleader and composer since the early 1980s. For the first three decades of his career, he was based in Seattle, but even then, he often came to New York to perform and record. Beginning in the 1990s, Bisio established an enduring relationship with Joe McPhee, and in 2007 he moved to New York. Within a couple years, he had joined Shipp’s trio. But it’s as a leader that he most recently was covered by Dusted. In our 2022 Midyear roundup, Bryon Hayes said of MBefore, a quartet recording that features Karl Berger, Mat Maneri, and Whit Dickey, “the quartet is so in sync that there’s no discernable rhythm section. Equally matched, the players create the perfect storm of sound.”
Matthew Shipp Trio — World Construct (ESP-Disk)
youtube
OK, let’s get this out there upfront, I am on this recording and it’s a privilege. My relationship with this ensemble, music and artists is deep, very deep. I am in my third decade of making music with Matthew. His vision, dedication and follow through are beyond beyond. Newman Taylor Baker brings it at the very highest level, always. I hear his humanity in every note. There have been many peaks, World Construct is Mount Everest.
Charles Mingus — Mingus The Lost Album From Ronnie Scott’s (Resonance Records)
youtube
Like most other bassists, hopefully most musicians involved in this music, Charles Mingus is a primary influence. His ability to infiltrate and lift my soul is a boundless joy. This document is no exception. His direction is simultaneously in the tradition and moves the tradition forward. His writing and playing are always phenomenal. On this set his abilities as leader, musical director, and conductor (especially on the two longest tracks) are astonishing! Much of this material we’ve heard before, but this ensemble brings such energy, power and beauty to it that it’s new again… and again. Although it is a band of giants, I am especially blown away by John Foster’s connection to the bassist’s every color, whim and direction.
Gene Ammons — The Greatest Hits, Vol.1 The Sixties (Original Jazz Classics)
youtube
What can I say, this one is going to school for me… with a big smile on my face and I can’t wait for tomorrow! This curated collection is absolutely superb, each performance raises the bar. Just listen to Misters Ammons and Stitt (on alto) connect on My Foolish Heart — stunning. The ballads are especially poignant but everywhere it “floats like a butterfly, stings like a bee.”
John Coltrane — A Love Supreme (Impulse)
youtube
The classic and in a class by itself. My son was born to A Love Supreme. I brought a boom box and cassette into the delivery room. Those beautiful sounds welcomed him into this world. Perfect.
“I humbly asked to be given the means and privilege to make others happy through music.” John Coltrane
Art Farmer Quintet — The Time and The Place /The Lost Concert (Mosaic Records)
youtube
This is one of the many recordings given to me by Mike Panico, a dear friend, producer, and label owner (Relative Pitch Records), now departed. Before hearing it I honestly didn’t know what to expect. It is a live recording from MoMA’s Jazz in the Garden series, dated 1966. I was blown away by what I heard. Jimmy Heath blowing Trane, absolutely owning it, Art Farmer playing free on “Blue Bossa!”Don’t get me wrong. The music stands on its own and is remarkable, due in no small part to an ultra-remarkable rhythm section. It does however always leave me wondering where the music sans the neo wars of the ’80s might be today.
Billy Bang / William Parker — Medicine Buddha (NoBusiness Records)
youtube
A live recoding from The Rubin Museum of Art, 2009, given to me by another wonderful, beautiful friend. June 13, 2019, I played The Vision Festival. June 14, 2019, I had open heart surgery. It was not a surprise. I planned it that way. I did not want to miss this spectacular celebration. In between sets I visited with my friend, Maria, we had a wonderful conversation. She wished me well and was aware of the stresses and strains of recovery. A couple of weeks later this CD showed up in the mail with a note from Maria letting me know what good medicine this music was… It is.
Bob Nell — Soft & Bronze (Plechmo)
Tumblr media
I am on this one as well but please don’t let that stop you from hearing it. To call Bob my friend is an understatement of gigantic proportions. The same is true of the term genius as applied to Bob. Beyond being my friend, Bob taught me almost everything I know about harmony simply by playing music with me day-in and day-out, all day, every day. By itself, that’s not a good enough reason for you to listen. But Bob’s music, artistry and spirit certainly are. You need to hear him.
Alice Coltrane — Journey In Satchidananda (Impulse)
youtube
This music is stunning, spiritual and amazing in the most joyful sense. Cecil McBee’s contribution to this music is monumental — the way he can maintain and manipulate an ostinato is beautiful. His solos are out of this world!
Charlie Haden / Hampton Hawes — As Long As There’s Music (Verve)
youtube
This one seems hard to come by nowadays. Hampton Hawes is one of my favorite musicians. His artistry is amazing! This recording documents the last time he and Charlie Haden played music together. (Side note: if you haven’t read Raise Up Off Me, do yourself a favor). Although I am not the biggest fan of the sound of the piano on this recording, the music is stellar — magical really.
To my ears Charlie Haden was born to play in the classic Ornette Coleman Quartet. Although there were other great bassists associated with OC (Scott LaFaro, David Izenzon) he defined the sound, function, spirit and language of the bass for that music. Here he redefines all those qualities in the piano/bass duo format. A very special recording.
Albert Ayler — Revelations (Elemental Music)
Albert Ayler - Revelations by Albert Ayler
There are few artists who had a bigger impact spreading the word. I can vividly remember brother Paul (a great musician, local Hendrix clone) bringing home New Grass (Impulse)… Wow! It’s about the sound! Spiritual Unity (ESP) remains monumental! (I seem to need a lot of exclamation points writing about Albert Ayler.) Yet this collection of live concerts certainly deserves its place in the pantheon of those beautiful documents. Power, energy and love are always evident. There are four great CDs in this set, all remarkable. To me disc three is the giant among giants.
