You want to know how I look: The older I’ve gotten (become) the more I look like him. I think I look Like…I look more monkish, I think. Prince & The Movie 4 Dudes, (movietudes?, monie dudes) I am. Yes, someone told me that “Dream Letter” was about. I figured out “Mountain on my own”. I never really embarked His tunes, they never really got inside of me like they did to other people who knew him. But on the album he is THE only pure, wild, non-deceptive thing happening That is one thing I’m sure of, we would definitely agree on a lot of things, artistically. I can just immediately tell from the recordings what

Disc 1: JEFF BUCKLEY 1995.03.02 Wolverhampton, Mitre Fold 01 Intro / Dream Brother 02 So Real 03 Last Goodbye 04 Grace 05 Eternal Life 06 Kick Out The Jams (MC5) 07 What Will You Say 08 Lilac Wine 09 Thats All I Ask 10 Mojo Pin NOTES Jeff performed in Wolverhampton for the first time almost exactly a year ago at the Connaught Hotel on March 19, 1994 during his Live At Sin-é Solo tour in front of a couple hundred concertgoers. Now he returns with his band to a sold-out show at Wulfrun Hall, an indoor venue with a standing capacity of just over 1,100. This is the third of their five UK dates which ends the Mistery White Boy tour. The show goes on very well with a significantly good vibe despite the fact that Wolverhampton received a considerably heavy snow downfall. So heavy that and even the local news broadcast implied prior to the show that anybody venturing out that night would better stay home which Jeff made referenceds just before starting the show: “Is it the snow? Everybody’s so far away…” “… Hello Wolverhampton!” The audience’s reaction to Jeff’s welcome tells that they came with high expectations. “I just kinda make some adjustments so get on with it.” While getting ready, he introduces his band. “That in the brown shirt. Weight a hundred and twenty-nine pounds is Michael Thye! On the bass is Mick Grondhal. Back here, Matt Johnson. On drums! The real one! Who-hoo on Matt Johnson!” Then an electrifying ‘Dream Brother’ opens the show and blows away the audience completely just like its follow-up, 'So Real’. Tonight Jeff sings two Nina Simone tunes infront of the stunned crowd causing much amazement. 'That’s All I Ask’ is sung by all himself for almost three minutes without any accompanying instrument and this resulted some remarkable vocal journeys throughout the performance. It showcases his unpaired talent which comes through both in his voice and the way he’s able to use and excavate it to sing out a certain part. 'Hallelujah’ is received with great admiration yet as Jeff starts to play its melody on guitar. After the performance Jeff suddenly adds “All right, we love you!” Then someone shots for some Neil Young to which Jeff begins to sing the first lines of 'Helpless’: “There is a town in North Ontario, I don’t use cocaine, but I like the smell of it…” causing laughter in the audience. The show set all highs and the rocking songs, such as 'Eternal Life’ and 'Kick Out The Jams’ are also playing a decent part making a festivity out of a cold and sober night.“Oh baby” To Jeff’s countdown, “One, two, three, hit me!”, Matt begins to play 'Vancouver’ to which he remarks in a little girl’s voice that “This is a song from my new album!” His guitar solo is cultivated with appearent improvisations not similar to other performances.

You can hear Jeff singing back vocals in this Patti Smith track - Fireflies
youtube
Another unreleased studio track, “Wander I Go,” may raise even more eyebrows. “It’s like a poem-song that [guitarist] Oliver Ray and I wrote,” Smith remembers, “and we all improvised it during the Gone Again sessions. Jeff Buckley was there because he was singing on another song [‘Fireflies,’ which did make the cut]. He picked up an acoustic guitar and played along, and Tom Verlaine also played. It was beautiful, but [the song] never surfaced.” As previously stated, “Higher Learning” is another unheard improvisational jam; on that track, Smith plays the clarinet.

The Hanged Man is the thirteenth card in the Major Arcana, and is given the number 12 to indicate the combination of the Magician’s (1) mastery over the elements with the High Priestess’ (2) intuition and devotion to the search for esoteric knowledge. A man hangs by his ankle from a T shaped tree. The calm expression on his face and the fact that his hands are hidden behind his back indicate that he is not struggling; he has chosen to do this to gain enlightenment, symbolized by the halo around his head. Many religions contain tales of sacrifice leading to the betterment of humankind. The Hanged Man, like Odin or Christ, willingly gives up his mundane existence to attain a greater understanding that will benefit not only himself, but also his people.
The Hanged Man signifies that your situation may best be improved by letting go. This can involve a sacrifice of something you love in favor of your best interest, or it may mean that your struggle to manipulate and control things has made your situation worse. The action you should take in this case is to choose to be passive. When you relax and let events unfold, rather than second-guessing others and their motivations, you discover the true meaning behind the scenario. The Hanged Man can indicate that you should do the opposite of what you would typically do, or what would be expected of you.

Bedsit Disco Queen and Jeff Buckley at Glastonbury
January 9, 2014 No Comments
I’ve just finished reading Bedsit Disco Queen, the music memoir by Everything But The Girls’ Tracey Thorn. I’m not really an Everything But The Girl fan but I have a fondness for random bits of their catalogue and even knew Rob Peters, the drummer on their 1986 album Baby, The Stars Shine Bright. But as soon as I saw the book in the library, I knew it was going to be a fascinating read for anybody who lived through the era. The paperback is released on January 16 and I heartily recommend it.
There’s one story from the book I’d like to share, which concerns Jeff Buckley. Thorn was a fan of Buckley and in April 1995, EBTG played a low key gig at Sin-e, the New York cafe where he had recorded his 1993 mini-album. Ben Watt (other half of EBTG) randomly met Jeff while they were having their hair cut at an East Village salon, they discovered they were both playing the Glastonbury Festival and Jeff suggested they do a song together. This is all forgotten until an hour before Everything But The Girls’ midday Glastonbury set.
And now, without warning or preamble, at eleven o’clock in the morning here is Jeff Buckley standing in front of me in my workman’s hut of a dressing room, and he has come to remind me that we have agreed to do a song together. We are due onstage in about half an hour. ‘Bloody hell, isn’t it a bit late now?’ I ask. He doesn’t think so. With a kind of gauche enthusiasm that makes him seem like a spectacularly gorgeous younger brother, he produces a guitar and begins to throw ideas at us.
They decide to cover The Smiths’ I Know It’s Over and the peformance is chaotic but enjoyable. Fast forward to late afternoon when Jeff Buckley is playing the main stage and Tracey and Ben are watching from the wings.
At the end of one song he looks over to us, catches Ben’s eye and starts beckoning him onstage with furious jerks of his head. It’s the scene at the end of Spinal Tap when the band reunite onstage! Ben picks up a guitar, gamely ambles on and plugs in. ‘OK,’ yells Jeff. ‘ we’re gonna do “Kick Out The Jams”. One-two-three-FAWH!’ Now Ben may well be the only guitarist in rock music who had never heard MC5’s punk anthem, let alone played it. Still, he’s nothing if not a quick learner, and after about eight bars he has sussed it and is off and running.
And that’s why, at the end of the song, Jeff Buckley says ‘Uh, thanks Ben.’
