#1.  The Earth is Online

Great Sci-fi novel with ‘alien intervention’ theme. Usually such plots has big problems with endings, but The Earth is Online managed to get a nice wrap for this very difficult theme. High-passed and absolutely interesting. What to expect: super smart MC, super sick brainteasers, unlimited flow, manly couple, twisted fairytales, uncommon special abilities. 

Warning: this novel has very weak romance line (you could probably just made it a friendship and almost nothing would be lost), but this is a great book nevertheless.

#2. Supernatural Movie Actor App

Best horror BL-novel I read. Every movie plot is stunning and quite uncommon and ingenious. Movies never has only one main theme - author interweave several into complex, deep, interesting narration with unexpected reveals and explanations. The overall plot is great too - it is type of the book where everything mentioned have a reason and place in a plot. Absolutely superior read. What to expect: super smart MC (explained in the plot), great horror stories, quite a bit of gore, unlimited flow, love between two personas in multiple personality disorder (explained beautifully in the plot), mysteries solving, manly couple.

Warning: the BL part is rather small, but really warm and nice to read.

#3.  Mist

The plot is insane - it is very smart, atmospheric and has great ending. Also it has a really strong balance of the plot and romance. There is CONSENT! And respect! FINALLY! Seriously, when ML asks MC even before hugging and they actually have conversations - even without supreme plot I would already loved this novel to the moon and back. It really hard to say anything about this novel without spoilers - it is mind-blowing. Period. What to expect: time agents, time loops, time paradox, complex plot, a bit (?) of gore, smart MC, great couple, a bit of ‘from enemies to lovers’ mood.

Warning: expect to burn a lot of your braincells to understand the time loops.

A fantastic and HELLA scary novel but as long as you avoid the extras (which holds the plot twist), the novel is amazing. #wip intro #wip: absolute wishes

So, as you know, TNotG will have 135 chapters spanning 6 arcs + the return to Billy’s OG world in the prologue (because, it has to be seven, y’get the reference?). Think of it as 6 Butchlander AUs that tie together in a bigger overarching narrative. I do have some logic regarding the order of these arcs (aka why it’s these worlds and why it has to be in this specific order of arcs). Mostly the reason is because I love reading certain genres in my free time so writing a QT presents this writer the opportunity to try out a couple of them, to experiment. Also with The Boys being an unfinished TV series as of 2023 with S4 projected to air in maybe 2024, my logic was: I have to make it a series of AUs, otherwise I’ll feel discouraged after seeing what’ll probably be canonized in S4, S5–? Basically I’m thinking of ways to keep my motivation alive to keep writing this 135ch QT. By then, I will have enough time to have seen the direction the TV has gone in for S4 and maybe S5, so I can make a decision then of how to “fix it” for the penultimate arc.

The reason why we’re starting off in the medieval fantasy genre first for Task World 1 for The Name of the Game:

The smart answer: it’s the genre I’m known for in my AO3 portfolio (pseudohistorical romance, really, if we truly condense everything I’ve written down)—so why not start off strong with what I know? I can confidently riff off the Western medieval fantasy tropes that we see in Game of Thrones, Dragon Age: Inquisition, the Witcher, etc to make a subtly fun and meta deconstruction of the tropes we’d expect from Western fairytales and fantasies. I want to satirize the whole knight in shining armor coming to save the kidnapped princess from the evil dragon trope—and I can make it fit Homelander and Billy.

And a bit of a truth potion: the small lizard hindbrain part of me wants to see the knight version of Homelander getting stuffed on Billy’s two dragon d*cks 🫣 and growing obsessed with his mount *snicker* to the point of overthrowing the kingdom he once loyally served in a dramatic twist of irony.

The reason why I decided to make arc 2 a dystopian horror/ survival game:

The smart answer: The previous genre is medieval fantasy—so I wanted something from the left field to take Billy by surprise. The Task World difficulty level is suppose to ramp up, so Arc 1 is the easiest for Billy because he gets to LARP as a motherf*cking dragon and Arc 2 is also easy because Billy excels at high intense stressful situations i.e. survival horror death matches. So it’s still difficult—but I get to throw him into a new environment with very familiar faces but the circumstances are now different (a different alternate reality) so it’s a different challenge awaiting him. I can show off Billy’s badassness and smarts in a different situation—and have the John of this new universe react to him.

Truth potion: Infinite Flow/ Unlimited Flow is one of my favorite C-novel genres. The Earth is Online is one of my all-time favorites, as well as I Became a God in a Horror Game, Kaleidoscope of Death, Global Examination, Supernatural Movie Actor App, Thriller Trainee, Welcome to the Nightmare Live, etc. I eat these easily 100+ to 300+ chaptered novels for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We’re combining what I love with dystopian horror because I wanna playfully poke fun of the popular Western (YA usually) dystopian survival horror tropes (think Cabin in the Woods, Hunger Games, V for Vendetta, Animal Farm, Brave New World, Fahrenheit 451, Saw, Squid Game) and combine that by making it a death game. There’s so much crazy sh*t we can play with—and it’d still be relatively in character for The Boys characters. I’m mostly looking forward to male model John being one of the unlucky participants either a rookie or one of the fellow popular death game streamers whom undercover MI6 Billy teams up with to solve the puzzles and the narrative twist that’ll be in this arc.

*Note: by the way, this fic does not exist yet on AO3. Wait till August (hopefully!) for the prologue’s premier!

Supernatural Movie Actor App

Feel like that this novel is going to be a rollercoaster of something :'). The story is about Xie Chi (if not mistaken), and Xie Chie has a secondary personality called Xie Xinglan (again, if I'm not mistaken). The MC participate in a Unlimited Flow thing to gain a body for his secondary personality. Did I mention they are boyfriends? Well, now I did.

Don't think they need to figure out taboos that they need to avoid... They enter a movie that is watched by ghosts(?) (Not really a spoiler, you get to know that in the first movie, btw I'm at chapter 35). They have a phone which has the app on it. The app tells them what their objective is and gives them rules they can't break.

So far, I am liking it. Sometimes it just feels a little bit weird how Mc is having a horny talked in his head. But it is funny to see the reactions from the audience and the movies are kinda interesting so far. The first movie was about a company who was involved in raising/making a Gu for her own benefits and the 2nd movie (which I'm currently reading) is about zombies. I believe these zombies are the jumping one. I believe those are also called Jiangshi. They seem fun, don't wanna meet one tho. Anyways, a woman wants to make a living zombie to transplant the soul of her belated husband. But the body she wants to use might be the late husband of a foxspirit :')... Also stuff happend, so I think MC needs that body to make his living zombie for someone :'D. Guess I have to keep reading to see how that's going to play out ^^

Popular danmei books I ditched due to ➡️personal⬅️ tastes:

(Been a while since I attempted reading these, so if there are minor inaccuracies below, that’s why.)

• First-Class Lawyer/Yi Ji Lǚ Shi 一级律师 by Mu Su Li: the trials in the book are not bound by the laws of our real-world countries, and that’s fine, but I doubt that any fair legal system will allow major surprise evidence/arguments to be sprung on a party during the trial. To address each side’s reasoning properly during the trial, parties have to receive and get to know each other’s general arguments before the trial. How can you prepare a proper defence if you don’t understand the reasons and evidence behind the accusation? How can the prosecution deal with the defendant’s counter-arguments if they don’t know what they are until the last minute? Furthermore, evidence has to be submitted for approval by the court before the trial to filter out irrelevant, bias-inducing evidence.

—From what I remember from my law course, that’s roughly how it works in the U.K., and I think that’s a fair way of doing things so I’d bet most civilised societies do that. The surprise-evidence plot twist smelled too illegal to me, so I was put off from reading the rest of the book.

• Priest’s books:

1. Sha Po Lang 杀破狼: stories with ancient yet non-xianxia/wuxia settings tend to bore me. Ancient yet non-xianxia/wuxia means the plot likely revolves around politicking and sometimes war, which I don’t like when they come in large (and male-dominated) spades because they’re too dry for me.

2 & 3. Tian Ya Ke 天涯客, Liu Yao 六爻: I love xianxia and wuxia so I thought I’d love these, but I just couldn’t keep reading far enough. Things were happening, but they weren’t riveting. I couldn’t get attached to the characters.

4. Zhen Hun 镇魂: I couldn’t get into it, partly because “modern + superpowers” isn’t a setting I usually like. (I do like it if it comes with a generous serving of humour, like in Depressed Husbands Want to Live a Peaceful Life by Green Wings.) Things were happening, but they weren’t riveting.

5. Mo Du 默读: part of the reason why I couldn’t get into it is because it’s a police story. Strangely, I love mysteries but not danmei police investigation novels, though I hope I’ll come to like them one day. (But I like police investigation fics! I guess I need to feel an attachment to characters first before they get involved in policing.)

• Criminal Psychology/Fan Zui Xin Li 犯罪心理 by Chang Er: it’s a police story, so the same reason as the one for Mo Du applies

• Qiang Jin Jiu 将进酒 by Tang Jiu Qing: same reason as Sha Po Lang

• Golden Stage/Huang Jin Tai 黄金台 by Cang Wu Bin Bai: same reason as Sha Po Lang

• Thousand Autumns/Qian Qiu 千秋 by Meng Xi Shi: I found the protagonist, romantic relationship, and events (as far as I managed to read them) bland

• Little Mushroom/Xiao Mo Gu 小蘑菇 by Yi Shi Si Zhou: interesting setting, but there are three things preventing me from liking the book:

1. I usually don’t like danmei books that are wholly set in a futuristic dystopia. I don’t read danmei to enjoy imagining a world/society that’s similar to ours but more oppressive/painful.

2. The protagonist’s personality is too mild for me, and the love interest’s personality isn’t a type I like either.

3. Female suffering. I can’t forget that part of the book because it’s so realistic (kudos to the author), it feels like shit that would actually happen if our world were to face those conditions. Good for the story, but I read danmei to feel semi-free from gender inequality, so it’s not great for me personally.

• Tong Qian Kan Shi 铜钱龛世 by Mu Su Li: the plot and characters weren’t attractive enough

• Supernatural Movie Actor App 灵异片演员app by Xi Zi Ji Jiu: the horror wasn’t horrifying enough and the protagonist tried too hard to seem impressive

• Qi Zi 契子 by Yi Xiu Luo: the systemic inequality within spousal relationships in the book is too huge and oppressive for me to enjoy the story

• Ru Xi 入戏 by Tong Zi/Zhe Yi Mei Zhen: racist, and based on the part I read, it looks like it’s on track to treat its female characters badly too

• Welcome to the Nightmare Livestream 欢迎进入梦魇直播间 by Sang Wo: 1) it feels too game-like and unrealistic (some books, but not this one, have fantasy settings that feel viable, like they could actually exist); 2) I’m not attached to the protagonist, and 3) there is very little interaction between the protagonist and love interest.

• Pan Guan 判官 by Mu Su Li: I wasn’t attached to the characters

• Quan Qiu Gao Kao 全球高考 by Mu Su Li: I wasn’t attached to the characters

Essential Elements of an Unlimited/Infinite Flow Story

As someone attempting to write my own Unli Flow, I thought I’d take note of the different elements so I can have a guide I can always refer back to.

I’ve explained what Unli Flow means many times before, but in case you missed it: Unlimited/Infinite Flow is a genre in Chinese web novels that feature characters entering multiple “instances” where they have to complete a challenge and/or solve a mystery. Failure in doing so would lead to consequences, most often death.

There’s also this definition by AshuraYami from the NovelUpdates Forum:

Unlimited Flow/Infinite Flow is a genre originating from the CN novel Terror Infinity. The genre mainly revolves on world hopping involving fictional works (anime, comics, movies, games and novels) and/or original worlds created by the author. Infinite Flow, as it’s ‘infinite’ namesake suggests, can accommodate all other genres, be it fantasy, sci-fi, horror, romance, etc. Representative works are Terror Infinity (origin of genre), Reincarnation Paradise (most chapters and word count), The Ultimate Evolution (promoter of data flow, an infinite flow derivative that is more game-like litRPG) and Thriller Paradise (most famous horror infinite flow).

With the definition out of the way, let’s goooo

1. The Authority

The entity/system in charge of the Unlimited Flow system as a whole. Most stories just chalk it up to the Unli Flow being some kind of otherworldly being/extremely advanced AI that just likes to mess with people.

From having read numerous Unli Flow stories, I conclude that crucial to a great, not just good, Unli Flow story is a well-defined Authority. The explanation behind the Authority’s existence and motives is the foundation to the entire story.

You can have a very fancy building (cool instances, well-developed characters, an exciting enemies to lovers couple, etc.), but if the foundation is flimsy, the building’s value would plummet in your eyes. You can still appreciate the building, of course, but you will never be content with it.

Examples of some novels that are good in almost everything else except The Authority (in my opinion): [spoilery]

Supernatural Movie Actor App: It was too profound with not enough groundwork laid for it, resulting in The Authority feeling detached from the main story.

I Upended Yet Another Campus Urban Legend: The Authority was not exactly bad; it was just inadequate. The justification of the Unli Flow existing became unconvincing because of this.

Escape the Infinite Chamber: THE AUTHORITY IS SO FUCKING RIDICULOUS THAT IT’S ABYSMAL. And the entire thing was explained in just one scene and from one extra??? SO MUCH PAIN AND SUFFERING AND THAT’S THE ONLY EXPLANATION WE GET??? HORRENDOUS!

2. Instances

Also known as “copy.” The other world/dimension where players have to face the different challenges.

The Authority may be the foundation, but the Instances are the defining aspect of the Unlimited Flow.

A lot of novels, however, are quite perfunctory when it comes to instances, just using it to further the main couple or as a mere stepping stone to the overarching plot. Or, if they’re not being perfunctory, then the Instances are just plain boring.

The first instance, especially, tend to be the most boring. Authors often use this to dump all the information about how their unli flow works. This often gets better by the time the 2nd or 3rd instance comes around....

Upon successful completion of an Instance, players will then be rewarded with either points, special abilities, magic items, etc.

Examples of novels with GREAT instances (based on logic, thrill, horror, etc. Again, all in my own opinion):

I Became a God in a Horror Game: The horror is present all throughout. I can still remember the fear I felt while reading about the statues in the first Instance. Each instance/arc also emotionally impacts you, an effect that most Unli Flow writers don’t really aim for or just generally tend to fail at. (This is also my favorite unli flow novel at the moment~)

The Earth is Online: (same author as Fourth Perspective, which I’ve posted a lot about before) What I love about Mo Chen Huan, the author, is how they write intelligent MC’s but without making them seem too OP. And this is because she actually shows us the MC’s thought process, inviting us to think along with them and figure out how to solve the challenge, and not just make her characters say “aha!”. This is what makes the Instances in TEIO great and memorable.

High Energy QR Code: The story could make use of more showing than telling, but I actually love the Instances in this novel. You know how good stories are often described as a well-made tapestry in that every little thread contributes to the big beautiful picture? That’s how each Instance reads in this novel. 3. NPCs

A gaming term which stands for “Non-Player Character.” Refers to characters who live within Instances and act in such ways that further the plot or challenge presented by the Instance. They may go against players or assist them. May or may not have a will of their own.

Examples of NPCs:

4. Player Hall

A space outside of instances where different players can gather and exchange information. Most of the time, this is in a space still separate from the real world. Players are often prohibited from using their powers in this space.

In some novels, Players have no choice but to live here, completely cutting them off from the real world. In this case, accommodation quality will depend on the Player’s level or points.

5. Personal System

The Personal System issues challenges to the player and keeps track of their current attributes, physical and mental state, etc.. It also calculates rewards and punishments for the player. First and foremost in service to The Authority (if they aren’t, then they’re most likely the Love Interest in disguise. And if not, the Player had somehow swayed it to their side).

6. System Store

The points earned from the different Instances serve as the Players’ currency, and they can use it to buy things from the System Store. The Store may sell weapons, medicine, magical items, or even special abilities. Basically, any item that can help the Player during Instances. Of course, it may also sell non-magical items, like food and everyday items, at a much lower price than special items

7. Player’s Goal/Wish

In some novels, the Goal is simply to clear all the Instances and leave the Unli Flow for good. But in others, the Unli Flow allow Players to exchange their points for a Wish. The more difficult the Wish, the more points are needed, and the more Instances are needed to be cleared.

Examples of a Goal/Wish:

After the Little Crybaby Enters the Nightmare Cycle: Chi Nan’s Wish is to regain his vision, stop crying and get his memories back.

Death Spiral: To uhh… figure out what the voice in the Elevator is trying to tell them? To regain their memories? [The actual Wish is a big spoiler, so I won’t mention it here.]

a skeptic paranormal investigator behind a famous podcast where they debunk paranormal theories, expose fake supernatural events and disprove stories of haunted places. they have a side hustle as a ghost tour guide where they pretend to belieeeeeve to entertain gullible tourists.

last but not least, for completely selfish reasons, a filmmaker with rob zombie credits.

I Dammed Well Called It!

Since the hellaciously baffling thing know as live action Riverdale has come into being and it’s “we know we’re camp so let’s turn into it” counterpart Sabrina has come into play, I’ve come to the horrific realization that no comic is safe

So, it’s been brewing in my little fangirl head about what over the top supernatural twist that they’d throw out there for fans to mainline and it it me, it hit me hard:: Casper the Friendly Ghost

Hear me out:

They’d set it before Casper was born and focus on his dad and his uncles in the late Victorian/early Edwardian times ( based on the 95 movie )

Since around that time period there was a huge following about occultism, that’s a total factor on Casper’s parents living in that huge Victorian while Casper’s dad is inventing a was to bring spirits to life again

The Uncles are all kind of bastards but they stick around in ghost form around home so it’s probably penance and we get to see what that was

Cause you know there is going to be drama and with the last name of McFadden it’s Irish brogue’s and Catholic guilt for everyone!

Since it in America they can totally show the horrible attitudes taken against the Irish back then.

I kinda think the uncles are like boot leggers, or some sort of shady enterprisers that just interrupt Dad McFaddens occult inventing party and set the towns tongues a wagging

Lots of spooky and period costumes and 25-35 year old actually playing there age so it doesn’t feel creepy watching them flirt

And if Harvey comics agrees to this then they’ll totally cross over Wendy the Good Witch, Hot Stuff (( an adorable demon)), and possibly the Rich Family ((Richies family tree coming into play))

Possibly spin-offs who would want to see a drama about how the Riches got theirs fortune and how they fought to keep it ((very Dynasty))

So why am I typing out into the void? Why am I predicting plot points and possible spin offs, and my hope for actors who get smooch to be playing as adults and not teenagers?Why am I praying it’s more like Are You Afraid of theDark and less like Euphoria?

Peacock announced a live action with a “darker look” and its in the works now.

My #1 post of 2022

I love how they use music in OFMD. Which is why in season two I want an Izzy-centric episode (like how they did with Mary) and towards the end when they’ve twisted our hearts with backstory and longing looks, I want to see Ed and Stede’s reunion from Izzy’s point of view with No Doubts “Don’t Speak” playing as we go to credits. Because that angry first mate is have some 90’s teenage angst because he’s breaking up with Ed ((and Ed doesn’t even realize it))and I am so fucking here for it.

Every night you dream that you talk to a genie, when you wake up you can't remember what you wished for. One morning you wake up with a giant crab pincer replacing your right arm. What do you do?

Step.1 screaming

I can't imagine anything else coming to mind before this very crucial step. It's less so about the actual replacement and more about The how...

Step.2 call out of work

No, I'm not entirely sure what the rest of y'all do for your work but having a giant crab pincer as a right arm is not going to increase productivity by any stretch of the imagination, but seeing as tomorrow is Friday, I feel like I might have a little extra time to figure out why on this beautiful blue marble. I would voluntarily replace a perfectly good working human right arm with a monstrosity.

Step.3 pop culture references

Now that I've called out of work and I'm probably going to draw the ire of the manager, it's time to look deeply within my mind and figure out whether or not there is anything in the many, many years of watching too many movies, reading too many comic books and playing too many video games that might actually be useful in some way, shape or form.

Step.4 isolation

Without much else to lean on. The only way I can see at the moment to get any sort of normalcy back is maintaining distance from everyone else who would likely cause a great disturbance. Luckily, by this point in our world history, not only have I mapped my smartphone to react to my left hand thumbprint, but we also have such wonderful apps as Uber eats and DoorDash. Not only will I be able to eat and look claw won't be getting in the way of cooking, but I also get a chance to collect my thoughts without too many other distractions.

Step.5 from a hypothesis

Okay, so by this point I'm fairly certain that there is no other way to explain the sudden change from one day to a next, but through magic or some kind of reality warping space anomaly. Seeing as I haven't heard anything else, go wildly different from normalcy. I imagine the latter is the better explanation for my current predicament. The only step now is to find a way to dispel this magic before I make any more stupid mistakes.

Final Step. Go back to sleep

Whether or not it's a far-fetched idea. The only thing that I can firmly conclude is that ,however I ended up in this mess it has something to do with whatever! I ended up dreaming about the night before somehow. With this in mind, I decide to head to my bed and attempt to return to sleep.an ASMR video, White noise machines, CBD gummies, sleepy time tea, and a hot shower followed by a dehumidifier with relaxing scents later I'm more than likely fast asleep at this point.

Sleep being in place of imagination and memory and do my very best to try and conjure up whatever the last memory before my last dream ended might have been. My experience there's always been at least one, particularly poignant piece of a dream that sticks with me throughout the day. In this particular case, I imagine a man with blue skin with crossed arms seemingly hovering in midair with a self-satisfied look on his face. Without any memory of what transpired before this smug look of victory crossed his face. It does seem fairly difficult to figure out what in particular went wrong but it does seem like there is one particular character that might be responsible for the state of my right arm.

For all of the stress that this new appendage has brought me, it seems like possibly through the magic itself. I found my way back to what feels like the source of what ails me. As if by a bluish teal whisp of shimmering light made a path straight to whomever I have to think for this little adventure. Nonsense, cities and towns pass by as my mind apparently decides that it might be a good idea to wander down memory lane and recreate certain memories in the form of quick vignettes and dioramas of highly personal scenes of my life.

Like an indie museum of my greatest failures, Embarrassments, and intimate moments on display for me, currently playing an actor in some sort of supernatural being's Little play about a guy who wakes up with a crab arm and proceeds to be very confused and upset much to nobody's surprise.

As you might expect, I did my best to move quickly through what is undoubtedly the most awkward art gallery I have ever found myself walking through as of now. Before I knew it, I found myself standing before work could only be described as the most generic looking suburban home in the history of anything. Unshaken by the peculiarity of this seemingly mundane home. I make my way to the door and I raise my claw to knock...

Comments:

In this world, audiences can enter into movies and play the role of a random character in the movie. By far horror movies have the least popularity. Su Min tried out a horror movie and became the first audience to survive till the end of the movie. From thereon, he became the sole person to successfully finish all the movies.

Highlights:

Most of the horror movies lean more towards thriller and mystery than actual horror, but the entertainment factor is pretty high. There is a diversity of horror movies so the plot remains refreshing and well-paced. I particularly like the movie about the Victorian ship and skin-changers. 

One of the biggest mysteries in the novel is trying to figure out the identity of the gong, who usually plays the role of a ghost in the movies.

Shortcomings:

The story format is pretty similar to the ‘Supernatural Movie Actor App’. Granted, SMAA came after this novel and may be influenced by it, but SMAA does a much better job of tying things together. For this novel, the reveal of the gong’s identity is…unsatisfying and forced, and has little to do with the plot.

The main character is also pretty op because he has a cheat (the gong) who helps him clear all the movies easily, so the character can feel rather lackluster at parts.

the sister intro mentions what unlimited flow actually is, but in general, it’s a subgenre found in chinese novels where the characters are (usually) tossed into a survival game with (usually) infinite levels, though there is (usually) a goal that ends it all. the survival games deal with figuring out the mystery, completing tasks, and surviving the instance. commonly, the characters are given props and/or abilities to help them survive. that’s generally the format of it, but with any other subgenre, there are variations.

if you’re intrigued and want to read examples, you can look through the novelupdates tag of it. majority here are fan-translated/edited MTL (machine translations). some of them may have [Unlimited/Unlimited Flow] next to their names; that’s basically telling readers they are an unlimited flow novel (like mine lol)

there’s way more danmei (bl) of the subgenre translated, but if you know chinese/don’t mind machine translations, you can look at places such as jjwxc/gongzicp for a lot more of the other types. the tag is 无限/无限流.

if you don’t mind reading danmei, i’d suggest reading through completed novels first. they all have various degrees of horror, and the overall tone differs too. suggesting complete novels: if you’d prefer something fluffier, there’s Misplacement Game. if you’re a fan of more gorey novels, there’s Supernatural Movie Actor App. if you want something playing more to the mystery aspect, Card Room (very long) is a good choice. the NU pages of those also have other similar-ish stories rec’d by readers
