Book #1: Cracks in the Stone

Years: 405-446

Main character: Ko’a, a royal child by blood but born out of wedlock to an innkeeper and raised as a commoner. Dreamed of becoming a reporter but taken to court before they were old enough to apprentice. Has a facial difference based off of Treacher Collins Syndrome and a limp. Very bookish and curious and initially outgoing but becomes more reserved in the unfamiliar surroundings of court. Still very confident in their own abilities.

Side characters:

Sunka, Ko’a’s older half sibling by their innkeeper parent and raised with them. Very proper and rules-oriented, happy enough to sit still lost in their thoughts while working. Also very loyal and has a strong sense of justice.

Nalki, Ko’a’s younger half sibling on the royal side, also illegitimate. Has a similar backstory, but was taken away from their other parent younger. Creative and shy and incredibly determined on any undertaking they choose. Ignored at court until Ko’a arrived. Has an intellectual disability.

Azja, Ko’a’s half sibling and the youngest legitimate royal child. Very shy and struggled with schoolwork, learning best in a hands on way. Their tutoring by Ko’a allowed them to be ready to rule after their older sibling’s disgrace.

Lila, Ko’a’s only surviving child from an arranged political marriage. Much like their parent, headstrong and opinionated and a bit impulsive but aggressively kind.

Plot: Ko’a was ready to have a normal life until they were brought to court over a prophecy that suggested they might save the kingdom. They had no interest in anything that grand, only in finding books to read and being kind to children in need of a friend. This bookishness and kindness led them to rise from servant to tutor and eventually earn the acknowledgment of their royal parent, granting them a noble title and an unwanted marriage. Later they would become a trusted advisor to their half sibling. But always, there was the threat and demand of that prophecy. And, sure enough, the worst happened and the kingdom was left in flames under a harsh ruler. But Ko’a found themself in exile with the rest of their family, unsure how exactly they were meant to fix it all.

Book #2: Blood and Ice

Years: 332-375

Main character: Aryel, the eldest royal child chosen not to rule but to lead the army in a war that's been raging their whole life. They enjoy fighting in a dueling sense and like thrills and risks, but they never wanted them on so grand a scale. All they wanted was to love the Aledik princess and be in jousting matches, but now they're dealing with battle and trauma and thrust suddenly into the awkward position of leading the army and the kingdom, forcing them to split their time between the opposing worlds of battle and court.

Side characters:

Bairon, Aryel's middle sibling with no interest in politics at all who managed to get away with becoming a scribe but still had to step in for Aryel frequently when they were off in battle.

Zjikil, Aryel's youngest sibling with a naturally sweet but easily influenced personality who was chosen to rule, but whose unfortunately delicate health led to their early death and Aryel's ascension to the throne.

Wyllawher: the princess and sole heir to the Aledik throne. Saw Aryel often when they were youths as their kingdoms were allied during the war, and the two fell in love. But then she grew up and was married and became Queen and they were forced apart. Never really fell out of love, though. Her personality is forceful and fun and full of wonder, but held back by her strict adherence to expectations.

Lolom: one of the few orcish advisors to Aryel. Very loyal and their most trusted friend at court. Often helped rule in their stead when they went to battle, and talked about books over wine when they were home. Fell in love slowly over the decades.

Plot: Aryel is resigned to a life of bloody battle as they struggle to win and end the generation-long war. At least they are well-loved among their soldiers and feel at home on the front lines. But after they have to rule as well, splitting their time between war and the quieter danger of court, the needs of all their people get harder to balance. And the talk of centaurs as treasonous spies only makes everything more complicated. To make matters worse, they aren't winning and they're running out of able soldiers. But they have to end the war somehow, and soon, or there won't be any kingdom left worth protecting.

Jonathan lights up the mood (gn reader) 🫂

♦ It had been quite busy the past couple of weeks with the Sunka attacks. Those beasts had charged at the fort more frequently than anyone would have wanted.

♦ After hours of fighting for your life, the sun had finally sunk beneath the trees and you were so exhausted and sore that it was kind of difficult to walk from the kitchen and down to the fireplaces.

♦ It was worth it though.

♦ Jonathan welcomed you with a smile after he looked away in disgust from his plate with beans. You calmly returned the greeting and sat down beside the blonde man.

♦ “Ya we’re quite handy this time, y/n! But I do hope those Sunka ain’t comin’ back!”

♦ “Thanks, Jonathan,” you said, eating your share of beans. “I’m not sure how much I can take anymore though..”

♦ He looks at you with a sceptical look. You were a strongminded and supportive member of the team, why would you think of something like that?

♦ Across from you sat Peter; he had heard your conversation and chimed in “I mean.. y/n is right. The Sunka have been getting in on us more often these weeks.. I wonder what’s gonna happen to us.”

♦ The other Mountain Men around you began to have small conversations about their own insecurities surrounding the Sunka attacks. You looked away, a bit ashamed to have reopened the wound your friends had had for so long.

♦ Jonathan looked around at the others until a sudden idea popped into his mind.

♦ Placing the beans away he stormed off into his cabin which led to your insecurities becoming bigger; did he just leave you because you told him you're weak?

♦ Not long after he had vanished he came leaping out of the cabin with what looked like his banjo. Jonathan sat down again, putting his instrument into position.

♦ “This is an ol’ song my ma used to sing to me.” (imagine ‘Soldier, Poet, King’ but in old Texas, basically ;w;)

♦ He starts singing a calm yet uplifting song. The men around you eye Jonathan as he starts to sing (something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbE3luZs3vo&t=0s)

♦ As the end of the song is closing in, everyone has begun to cheer him on. Sounds like his music and supportive actions helped around the fort that night.

♦ You sat there peacefully, smiling at the sounds of your friends’ laughter and joy as their willpower was returning.

♦ Before saying good night to Jonathan you asked him to do that again the next night.

♦ And so he did.
