The Politician - Homebrew Rogue Subclass

Why isn't September the 7th month of the year? Whoever designed this calendar ought to be stabbed.

"Niche" as a prompt was designed to encompass weirder subclass options, ones that probably wouldn't work in every campaign. This one, for instance, could do some absurd things in a subterfuge-heavy campaign, but might not fare so well in a dungeon crawl or a wilderness expedition. But I wouldn't be surprised to see people figure out ways to get creative with the prompt.

Hello all and welcome to Subclass September! Or Subtember, Subclasstember, anything you'd like to call it!

As explained in my most recent post, for the next 31 days I'll be creating and posting a different subclass for D&D 5e, with each inspired by a different prompt! I have my own that I'll be following (also posted recently on my blog), but @homebrew-a-la-traumaverse also made a very lovely one to check out!

For today's subclass, I've made the Oath Of The Sunrise paladin, following the prompt "Sun"! It's a hybrid subclass focused around maintaining hope throughout any periods of doubt and escorting society through whatever dark ages may arise. A few of the more video game-oriented people may be able to pinpoint my source of inspiration, but I also think it does a really good of standing with its own identity!

I can't wait to browse the Subclass September tags to see what everyone else made, and I'll see everyone here tomorrow!

Subclasseptember 2023, Day 7 - Circle of the Courts

I do love the Feywild, the whole contrast of Summer and Winter, the weird social chess-playing, its a lot of fun.

This one is...a tricky one. An attempt at a sort-of social Druid and a specialised blaster, and I'm not sure it does incredibly at both.

Subclasseptember Day 16: Weather

The Circle of Ruins - Homebrew Druid Subclass

Given their association with structures like Stonehenge, I'm surprised that this isn't already a thing.

Explicitly designed to be a tanky caster (unlike some subclasses *cough bladesinger cough*), with ways to help maintain concentration and further play into the delayed value that the Druid class already encourages. You broke my concentration on Call Lightning? Good thing I had a Moonbeam cooking that entire time. It also plays into some novel weaknesses, though - you're durable, but mobility is not exactly your strong suit. Endure as the ruins do.

Subclasseptember Day 7: Fey

The College of Jest - Homebrew Bard Subclass

When I made the Subclasseptember list for this year (with permission from @nite0304, who made last year's), I wanted to ensure that each entry had multiple potential avenues to explore. For instance, Fey here can refer to fairies, as it is often used in D&D - but it can also refer to more general childness, a happy disposition, or the Scottish definition of "at the point of death."

From everyone else's expressions, it's clear that the Jester here has just told an incredible joke.

Subclasseptember Day 22: Monster

The Visionary - Homebrew Warlock Subclass

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If so, then you simply must feast your eyes on this.

A warlock subclass that goes all out into the funny laser beam attack. It also draws from the Hexblade in that it enhances a certain Pact Boon, but isn't particularly reliant on it either way.

It's not lost on me that this is basically giving Maneuvers to Warlock, but between the other upgrades, the long rest recovery, and the being an entire spellcaster, you shouldn't be left too hungry for things to do.

Subclasseptember Day 4: Crystal

The Prismatic Domain - Homebrew Cleric Subclass

Put your spells into crystals to buff them - but you have to choose how many and which ones you want to use beforehand. Choose wisely.

Is this just Vancian Casting in a trenchcoat? Yes. You also get six flavors of blasting spells at level 6 because rainbows are awesome, actually.

Real talk though. Why is Prismatic Wall not concentration? You have seven flavors of nonsense to break through - some of which are, by RAW, technically impossible to destroy, because the required damage types don't have spells that can damage objects. You really need to concentrate on something else while doing that?

Subclasseptember Day 19: Race

The Rider - Homebrew Artificer Subclass

I feel like people might interpret this as "Race-locked" like with last year's prompt list. Power to you if you do; I've decided to take a different route this time.

I've seen other vehicle-based Artificer subs before, and I love them, but I wanted to do my own spin on the idea.

Kinda lifts from my own Skywatcher, summoning a "mount" that doesn't quite abide by the normal mount rules. Great for a hit-and-run skirmisher playstyle. Too bad 5e's design isn't actually great at rewarding that sort of thing.

Well, wallriding is its own reward.

Guerilla - Rogue Subclass

This isn't the first trapper subclass that's ever been made, and it's not going to be the last.

This one probably isn't too balanced, but when you're making 30 subclasses in a row a few things are probably going to slip through the cracks.

Not to spring that realization on you.

I'm just roping in some help from my previous works.

If the thought of reusing material sends a spike of fear into your heart, I'm afraid I'll need to let you know it's only going to get worse from here.

Yeah, this is going to be a hole thing.

Okay, I'll stop before we get stuck doing more of these puns.

Day 5: Dragon

The Path of the Dragonstone - Homebrew Barbarian Subclass

Sometimes it's not enough to have a pet dragon, or to have dragon magic, or even to channel the power of a dragon. Sometimes, you want to be the dragon.

... Without using Shapechange or True Polymorph. Tier 4 doesn't exist.

Did I really just make three subclasses that use some sort of crystal in a row? Yes, I did. Throw them all together into one party and let the confusion unfold.

"Wait, that's not how Dragon Install works" The name sounded cool.

Just because this is a peaceful protest doesn't mean we won't kick your butt. The military-artificer complex will be torn to the ground one brick at a time. And then those bricks will probably go into someone's window. Hopefully the corrupt police chief's, but we're not picky.

Subclasseptember Day 17: Transformation

The Rebirth Domain - Homebrew Cleric Subclass

Sure wish I could cast Reincarnate on myself as an action. The Rebirth Domain isn't necessarily required to be transgender, but... come on, it's totally transgender.

While the subclass's description mentions turning an agent of darkness to light, it doesn't really get any features that would force that. There's no easy trick to redeem someone - you'll have to do it the hard way just like anyone else.

If anyone's confused, the image at the bottom is Monster Reborn. With a trans-colored filter over it, of course.
