what's your policy on ties?

only a perfect 50/50 counts as a tie. if one bait is even .1% higher than another, they win. i did this because i thought it would be funny and i also want to avoid tiebreaker rounds as much as possible

do you reblog propaganda?

yes! you are free to tag me in propaganda or to send it as an ask, although i will probably not reblog/respond to anti-propaganda. (you're free to make it or tag me though, it'll probably make me laugh)

what are you counting as straightbait?

the definition of straightbait in this tournament is intentionally very loose, and the poll question is also vague on purpose (is it celebratory or derogatory? who knows). i've accepted submissions with more obvious examples of "straightbait", such as cases where m/f couples are teased but never get together or are revealed to be queer. however, i've also accepted couples where they have some kind of weird fucking thing going on that could be interpreted a number of ways but isn't straightforward canonical m/f romance, "buried straights" who die after romance is confirmed, and a number of other things. i go more into this tournament's definition of straightbait here and here.

why is this couple in the tournament if they get together canonically?

see above. in most cases where this question comes up, we're talking about buried straights. if the characters in question are queer, it is straightbait at least partially by virtue of those characters not being straight. and if neither of the above, the answer you are looking for will be in the propaganda.

you're free to argue about the validity of a straightbait in the tags, amongst yourselves, or in propaganda, but please don't come to me about whether a bait should or shouldn't be in the tournament. their inclusion on this blog + submitted propaganda speaks for itself

what is The Policy?

sometimes i rb propaganda posts that i tag with #as per The Policy. the policy says that any time i encounter a post on my dash that is related to one of the pairs in this tournament such that it could be used as propaganda, i have to reblog it.

how were the matchups decided?

i sorted all my submissions into popularity tiers, then randomized matchups within each tier, so characters were matched up with others with equal or similar popularity to the best of my ability. tiers were based on how many submissions a pair received and how well they did in the singles tournament. there were five or six tiers in total, although it's been long enough since i made the bracket that i do not remember the exact number

what is the singles tournament?

the singles tournament was a preliminary tournament that i ran for every pairing or character that was only submitted once, hence "singles". i only automatically qualified straightbaits with more than one submission, so i did this to allow more submissions to enter the main tournament. also a chance to see your blorbo in a poll at least once, even if they didn't qualify

what should i do if you've gotten something wrong?

send me an ask or a message, or leave me a comment! if you send an ask, please specify if you want me to answer it privately, as i will answer publicly by default. although be advised if i've made a typo in a poll option or poll title, i cannot edit it

what should i call you?

i've been referring to myself as straightmod/mod, but you can also call me karinyo! i use they/them, he/him, and ze/hir

hello my dear mutual i cannot add it to the tournament now but what was the straightbait couple you would've submitted

Hello beloved mutual! It was Hardwon Surefoot and Moonshine Cybin aka HardShine from Not Another DND Podcast. They are some of the biggest straight bait I have ever seen. I technically haven’t finished the podcast yet (have 5 eps left) but, I know they don’t get together. However!!! There is SO much joking flirting between them and the chemistry is THERE. There are three things that stick out for me though. Two require a bit of context (so please pardon the rambling below lmao)

First, the one that doesn’t need much context, is just how the party’s relationship is structured. It’s Hardwon, Moonshine, and Beverly. Beverly is a 15/16 year old boyscout and pretty early on Moonshine and Hardwon step into parental roles for him as they travel. Not like full on mom and dad, but it’s *enough* and I’m not trying to enforce like a nuclear family view of found family at all (because that’s what they are) but idk just how they act as a tag team in keeping Bev’s goofs and antics under wraps really gets me

Next, there’s a part in the campaign where (due to dnd plane shifting and time dilation stuff) the party reunites with some old friends who have aged, like, 40 years since they last say them. These two have gotten married and have two kids. One is named Beverlin which is putting together the names of Beverly and his canonical boyfriend Erlin. The other is Moonwon, aka smashing together Hardwon and Moonshine (I fully believe this kid’s name would have been Hardshine aka their ship name if Beverly hadn’t already named his sword Hardshine after the two of them). Just, there’s something there with naming the kids after these two ships that makes me go a little crazy

Finally, the characters these guys parallel also have a romantic connection, probably reciprocal but at least canonically one sided. The conceit for this campaign is that the world was already saved by legendary heroes years ago. And as you go on you get to see how each character of our party members parallels one of these heroes. For Hardwon, his counterpart is Ulfgar and Moonshine’s is Alanis. Ulfgar is very clearly in love with Alanis when we see them interact and idk if anything comes of this for them (once again haven’t finished the podcast) but it’s just very reminiscent of Hardwon and Moonshine could be.

This is utter word vomit rn and probably makes NO sense but yeah basically….. HardShine is my non-canon straight ship of choice now lol. Thanks for letting me share, I have been rotating them in my mind with incoherent thoughts for a little bit now

Has anyone submitted Flynn and Cali from Skylanders bc they do kinda count as straightbait, bc they’re still not canon even after almost ten years of the franchise implying mutual feelings between them (it’s mostly bc we haven’t had another mainline game since 2016)

If anyone hasn’t, I’d like to be the one to submit them bc they are my comfort ship rn, bi4bi tough catgirl x furry himbo supremacy! (They’re not canonically bi nor do they have any sexuality confirmation but I headcanon both of them as bi!)

salustraightions! we will be having PRELIMINARY POLLS!!

as you know, i've only qualified characters that have gotten more than one submission into this tournament. however, i vastly underestimated the amount of individual submissions i would get. there were sooo many straightbaits submitted that are not reflected in the list of qualified characters.

which is why...

we will be having a PRELIMINARY POLL TOURNAMENT for all single submissions!

except not exactly a tournament, because there will be more than one winner. FORTY FIVE winners to be exact. why forty five? well because of a lot of math, 45 winners plus the already qualified competitors would be the absolute max amount of competitors i can fit into a successful straightbait tournament. essentially, this is as much room as i can possibly make on the bracket for more competitors.

basically, i'm going to pit all the single submissions i have received against each other to see who gets to be in the main tournament! except unfortunately in the case of those who didn't meet the definition of "straightbait" or ships between real people. other details are as follows:

there will be 6 rounds in total

there will be 3 main rounds and 3 redemption rounds

there will be 10 (or as close to 10 as we can get) options per poll in the main round and 5 (or as close as we can get) options per poll in the redemption rounds

there will be 42 winners of the main rounds and 3 winners of the redemption rounds

competitors will be sorted randomly, using a list generator

watch the announcements tag for updates! everything related to the preliminary tournament will be tagged as #singles tournament. polls themselves will be tagged as #singles tournament round [numeral]. and i'll add those last sentences to my rules post, which you can find under #basics
