Behold voice of the Smitten! Initially he had a few different names like "Flower" and "Chatty" (and "Long Winded" from Narrator) and other things in that vein, but Hero accidentally solidified his name as "Smitten". Smitten was brokenly describing how beautiful Princess is (as he often does) and Hero offered up the word "smitten" when they were trying to find an adjective. Smitten fell in love with the word and immediately took it as his proper name. Smitten is the friendliest of the bunch and he will often step in to help other employees from monsters--though the employees usually run away without thanking him. He is the tallest of the group by far, and nearly indestructible. Because of that he is normally the one who deals with Cold when they get trigger happy. He is 100% the apex predator of the mansion, but no one really knows what he eats. Most of his free time he spends telling stories or singing or tidying things up. He uses the "flesh tentacles" (no one knows what they are) to make mock pupils in his eye sockets, he says it makes him seem more approachable!

He gets on with basically every voice, even if he thinks Cold is ridiculous, and has made a lot of effort to endear himself to Hero. It is because Princess secretly asked him to, but he probably would have done it even if she didn't.

instead of your perception of the hero changing him, his perception of the princess is what changes him. her very presence is what changes him, even if it’s based on his perceptions

the narrator comes from a creator who was trapped in his life. so he created these two gods to kill that stillness, to destroy the mundanity, not realizing that doing this would destroy the joy of something different. if everything is constantly changing without a trace of stillness, there’s no time to appreciate it

anyways, as you can tell, the cold route is the one i have most ironed out. i’m tryna give em all tiny gems that change like the princess’s tiara:]

In The Moment of Clarity all the Voices are there and they are all broken. The Narrator tells you to ignore them.

You can ask the Narrator why you shouldn’t listen to them. Maybe the Voices need to be heard. Maybe you are helping them.

However, if you do ask the Narrator that, it’s the Cold who answers to say you are wrong. He tells you that you always give them (the other Voices) too much space. He thinks it’s why you always lose.

The thing is, you don’t get the choice to stop listening in this route. You don’t get to make any choices. You refused to slay or save the Princess and ended up accidently giving away your ability to make choices.

The Voices talk and talk and talk. You can’t stop them. You can’t do anything other than move forward and let her out.

This fragment of the Shifting Mound has all of your will. All she wants is to be free.

LET HER OUT

In the Razor (the only other route where you end up with all the Voices) by the end everyone is talking all at once. It’s overwhelming and unhelpful so you do what the Cold advises in the Moment of Clarity; you silence them.

Again, YOU don’t get a choice in this… but this time the Long Quiet does.

They have decided that this needs to end. The Princess has become a murder monster and neither of you can grow further while remaining trapped in this cycle. So, they silence Voices and Narrator, and then they deal with her.

In both routes, YOU lose all choice, gain all the Voices and press the only option given to you while the Shifting Mound or Long Quiet do the thing that route has moulded them to do.

Some design notes for the cold. Additional related headcanons below the cut.

His sharp claws and teeth don't allow him to preen himself without causing severe and permanent damage to his feathers

Secretes a natural oil that keeps his feathers orderly and shiny. Tastes bad though (RIP Smitten when he tries to preen him)

Doesn't express himself bodily aside from mild head-tilting when he's intrigued.

Actually has a barbed tongue similar to a cat's.
