• listen. hear me out here. being the younger sibling of rei and ritsu.

• SO many opportunities for silly shenanigans to ensue

• i can imagine eichi being the one to attempt (keyword: attempt) to court you first

• which obviously, considering his history with rei, is honestly REALLY WEIRD?

• you’re just like . What the fuck are you doing while eichi like . Winks at you or something

• seriously so awkward. you hate his guts tbh and are planning on his downfall together with rei

• ritsu finds it so So stupid. probably gossips ? gossipED ? about you with eichi at tea club . eichi was kicking his feet and giggling the entire time

• part of him doesn’t believe his crush is genuine at first. he thinks that it’s amusing, obviously, but real feelings ? he is simply not allowed to feel those…

• until now that is !

• he thinks your snarky remarks and nonchalant gaze are enrapturing

• meanwhile, you: (ʘ言ʘ╬)

• you accompany rei and ritsu to ensemble square quite often, which means you are (unfortunately) greeted by the presence of eichi almost Daily. A Nightmare for sure

• as time goes on, you see how hardworking and charismatic eichi is while performing his duties as executive for starmaker productions and well. even You can’t deny it’s a little attractive. ONLY a little (a lot)

• once eichi catches on to you reciprocating his feelings, he is SO ANNOYING!!!

• teasing gets way wayyy worse. honestly it’s over for you, personally i would have kms by that point

• and once rei notices your banter with eichi turning into FLIRTING? it is joever for you

• half of him is extremely disgusted . he is clinging to his beloved ritsu to console him . the other half is impressed somehow

• “ah, of all people, it had to be him?” “listen i didn’t want this either, rei” - you

• to see your hatred of what eichi did turn into understanding… really even you’re impressed with yourself

• and eichi is Actively trying to be better . he is a little fucked up but it’s okay you can fix him (and also make him worse)

• also i think it’s so funny to imagine eichi’s pale ass figure visit the dark, brooding, gothic sakuma estate. Family dinner visit !

• rei does not give his approval. he almost throws a plate at eichi

• ritsu just gives you two a thumbs up

• a happy family for sure ❤️

• as the best friend of tori, you have personal beef with his butler

• WHY is he always with tori. how are you two meant to get up to mischief with him constantly Watching. Always Watching.

• and yuzuru thinks you are a horrible influence on his young master

• an OUTRAGEOUS CLAIM which you are ready to fistfight him for . you exude nothing but purity, innocence and charm

• tori is somewhere between amused by your hatred for yuzuru and tired of hearing you talk about him ALL THE TIME

• “and why does he have to constantly be watching you? seriously, he should get a hobby. he’s an idol, too, right? actually i can kind of see why, he definitely has the looks to make it in the industry. anyway—” “OH MY GOD SHUT UP (Y/N)”

• tori doesn’t understand why you’re so Oblivious and so Dumb . he cries to eichi-sama about it who is too busy . idk watching wataru turn into a bird

• yuzuru just watches you with that type of . Evil and Scary closed eye smile that he is a pro at

• honestly? you’re quivering in your boots. but also admiring his smile. his smile is really pretty. Wait a minute.

• the complaining turns into swooning ! who would have guessed (tori) (he guessed) (he knew) (and now he has to listen to you talk about yuzuru 25/7)

• you clean up your act in order to impress him. No More late night snack runs with tori. you are a SAINT

• yuzuru finds it endearing and honestly quite entertaining

• soon enough, he finds himself completely charmed by your. erm. really strange(?) behaviour

• he, himself, is also a strange individual so there’s no surprise there

• tori sets up tea dates for the both of you as well awwww. What a good friend (he invites you over for tea with him then runs away when yuzuru comes to serve you tea. it is a Kind Of tea date)

• honestly you scored a 10/10 baddie GOOD FOR YOU

• ok i know i have done the sibling ones So often already but. tsukasa’s sibling. YOU being tsukasa’s sibling that is.

• you and tsukasa are constantly discussing how tori has Wronged you everyday

• tori just looks at you both and calls you a fugly pair of siblings

• “listen i’m not saying we bring a lighter to the next fine concert But”

• “that is not appropriate at all… that being said i am not discarding the idea”

• dw about tori he has his own personal bodyguard (yuzuru) to ward off predators (you and tsukasa)

• tori gets a lot busier with idol work and that’s when you realise you miss going to the student council office just to banter with him.

• eventually the teasing insults and fighting turns into the type of fighting that you do as a couple. idk it just KIND OF HAPPENS?

• tsukasa is like. Well i do not approve but at least it’ll be good for our family business

• a good end. a happy end. eichi and wataru have adopted the two of you as their own

• you buy matching, cutesey couple items and then fight over them

• i really cannot imagine wataru having an enemy. SURE he has a lot of haters (tomoya) (hokuto) but even then it is done so in an affectionate manner. There is simply No hatred in his heart. only silliness

• so unfortunately your hatred of him is one-sided ! enemy to lovers part 2

• being a rival actor to THE wataru hibiki is certainly a predicament. i mean he has sentient hair is there anything he can’t do

• and it pisses you off. Majorly. who does this absolute clown think he is

• you try your hardest at Every show, you sing your heart out, put the most effort in

• and then there’s wataru. who is Equally as hardworking but somehow 10x more charismatic

• even eichi tenshouin is his biggest fan . he has capitalism on his side

• so you have a burning jealousy and hatred for this man . Well until he offers to do a show WITH you

• you just give him the blankest stare . What are you on about

• while he’s laughing to himself and monologuing on how you two would make the perfect lead roles

• that’s how you get roped into performing with him and a bunch of idols in dramatica . And well they are certainly an interesting bunch

• as you prepare for the (romantic btw) musical you convince yourself the warmth you feel in your cheeks at his love proclamations is just Method Acting

• IT IS NOT!!!! no one can resist his charm

• you also see how well respected he is as an actor and his true talent on stage

• like . He was one of the eccentrics for a reason. he is stupidly good at acting

• jealousy turns to admiration and well. yeah you guessed it ! admiration turns into an intolerable crush

• wataru, similarly, is impressed at your prowess for acting and shows no signs of being quiet about it. he is yelling how talented you are every 5 seconds and joking how he may Really fall for you

• at the kiss scene it all really comes together . it is a sincerely romantic and genuine kiss

• the crowd is going WILD (except eichi) (he’s jealous) (“i wish that was me fr”)

• backstage, you may just pass out

• but of course wataru is there to lift you up and be a shoulder you can lean on

• And that’s how you scored a date with THE wataru hibiki . he is everyone’s wataru but especially yours

• absolute 10/10 power couple watch out hollywood (and eichi)

• i am so normal over him guys trust (lie) (such a lie)

• he is the perfect candidate for enemies to lovers . something about him just screams ‘i love you in a way that is so painful and so mean’

• anyways . being the apprentice of wataru after natsume stops being his apprentice

• I AM SO SANE OVER THIS CONCEPT

• obviously you were Not Really involved in the war so you’re pretty clueless as to natsume’s former relationship with wataru

• which makes you question why he is such an asshole to you. LIKE he does not take your magic seriously at all

• he thinks that you are not qualified which is . so stupid like you cannot gatekeep being an evil wizard okay that title is for anyone

• in reality… he is a tiny bit insecure that you’re good enough at magic to be wataru’s apprentice

• magic and alchemy has always been something that his character is largely based on and for someone to take over that role so quickly ?!?&:!

• so he Pretends that whenever wataru is telling him about your latest experiments and tricks that he is Not impressed .

• he's basically the yawns . sloppy. boring. lazy .

• he actually really wants to discuss magic with you but every time you meet he just scowls and acts like a bitch. in usual natsume ‘i hate being vulnerable or showing any feelings’ agenda

• so that means you’re going to have to make the first move. otherwise the enemies to lovers slowburn 100k words pining fic ends HERE

• if you ask him for help with magic he is going to be so smug

• like “hM, i figured the likes of you would need help from me afterALL”

• just try not to punch him in the face it will be WORTH IT OKAY!!!

• listen i wasn’t going to include the love potion natsume trope in this but these headcanons are tropey enough let me have this

• anyways you are the best most magical couple in all of ensemble stars . you create tricky little spells to foil your enemies (eichi tenshouin) and then kiss wearing witch’s hats . the end

• another good enemies to lovers candidate but in a More pathetic way i think

• you’re the producer for past fine. please hear me out on this concept

• i think your beef would be similar to eichi and hiyori . like divorced couple type romance

• you are regretful of the war and find the memories to be bittersweet. then you talk to tsumugi and he’s like Yeah haha i would probably do it again

• HE HAS ISSUES

• and yet he’s still one of the only people who truly understands and unconditionally supports you… this is a sick and twisted world

• i think tsumugi is too moe kyaah anime girl to have any hatred towards you so the enemies to lovers will (once again) be one sided

• he brings up your time as second years and you feel the need to throttle him

• yet you know him so well too, especially how he overworks himself

• and as an ensemble square producer you have to take care of his soggy pathetic self. Sorry

• that one romance trope of the person bandaging the wounds of the love interest . that’s you two except it’s you dragging his ass to bed at 3am

• he will complain . so you have to compromise on letting him cuddle you

• everyone notices how close you two are btw . sora is that one image that’s like ‘hey why does senpai call you babygirl’ ‘how about we stop talking for a little while’

• you Deny all the outrageous claims that you CARE??? for him and say it is rather your past together that makes you feel obligated but it was like two? three? years ago mostly everyone has moved on. stop lying to yourself

• you two have healed Together… and that is what makes your love so raw and vulnerable and eughhsjk this is so sappy and cute. Throws up

• sora is too full of JOY and HAPPINESS to be enemies with anyone . So we are going a bit off script you are rivals in this scenario

• video game rivals to be precise ! i feel like the 🤓 typing this but it’s CUTESEY I PROMISE

• mostly you two play multiplayer games together and get a teensy bit competitive . in the video game club of Course which means we get natsume to be the (totally unbiased) judge

• sora is realllyyy good at video games which means you frequently lose . this is why you have waged war on him

• you will not STOP until the ultimate gamer title becomes yours

• sora is just ヽ(*⌒∇⌒*)ﾉ he’s happy to indulge and play games with you because your colour is always so bright and vibrant when you do !

• little does he know you are plotting his Demise. his demise on little big planet or something

• days, nights, weeks, months you train to beat him. and you never do

• he keeps winning everytime and always acts so modest about it which is even WORSE!!! you can't even get mad when he’s so polite about beating you

• once sora notices your colour becoming more dull because of how demotivated you are he gets really worried (◞‸◟；) he loves playing games but loves spending time with you more…

• once you admit that you’re upset about being worse at games he thinks of a quick solution ! play games together instead of against each other and he can teach you all his tricks

• so your weekly gaming tournaments basically turn into gaming dates ft thirdwheel natsume and sometimes tsumugi

i would have made a separate post for this but i feel like no one would read it so. i’m finally back after um. 10 months. i was super busy and kind of lost interest in enstars and other things so i pretty much abandoned this blog… BUT I HAVE RETURNED! i’m going to try posting every so often and interacting more with you guys on here ^_^ i cleared out my inbox (sorry to anyone who sent things in, it was cluttered and stressing me out haha) so feel free to send me any asks! i will NOT be opening specific requests, but you can feel free to send suggestions for prompts, scenarios or characters you want me to make headcanons for and i’ll try my best!! i also want to try out writing proper fics alongside the silly hc posts, but i might mostly post those on ao3, though i would like a nice balance between silly and serious(ish). i will also try writing for other fandoms like mhyk, twst and pjsekai since i am heavily in those as well but yeah!! my official comeback methinks. hope to chat more with everyone! ♡

summary: Julia Morgan knew nannying for three girls who had recently lost their mother would come with many challenges. But she never thought their father, the enigmatic musician John Paul Jones, would be causing her the most trouble. And while Julia is not in the business of saving broken men, her tenderness might be meant for more than little girls and wildflowers.

a/n: i miss you all so much, miss wf so much. i've been working my butt off on my writing career and the time i have for john and julia is so limited, but i still think about them all the time. this is just a little fluffy interlude to tide us all over until i can get to what will be a very signif chapter. so i hope you enjoy it, even if it's a little silly :)

“Sir Curran for the talent, ladies.”

The lights were dimmed, the stage was set, and Jacinda was doing a marvelous job of playing a jumpy melody on her recorder.

“And here he is, Mr. Starmaker himself, your host, Hughie Green!” Tamara announced.

I began to applaud.

The curtains by the window trembled. Kiera yelped. “I’m stuck!”

Tamara looked askance nervously as if she was truly in front of a full audience, not just me sitting on the sofa cozy under a blanket with a cup of tea. “Technical difficulties, ladies and gentleman!” She snapped at the recorder playing Jacinda. “Cindy!”

Jacinda stopped playing, the last note squeaking. She huffed as she stamped over to the window where Kiera was only getting more and more tangled in the curtains.

I tried to stifle my giggles as she tried to free Kiera while Tamara stood by tapping her foot, checking her wrist for a watch that wasn't there. “The audience is waiting, Mr. Green. This is live television.”

“Okay, okay, I’m coming!” Kiera squeaked and then burst through the curtains. She looked absolutely darling in her father’s herringbone sportscoat (leave it to John that an average sportscoat would be the most shocking thing I could find in his closet) that fell all the way to her ankles, sleeves rolled up just enough so she could wave the hairbrush in her hand near her mouth as a microphone. “Ahem!” Kiera gestured to me.

“Oh, sorry!” I started to clap my hands again. “Bravo!”

Kiera bowed several times to the audience of one as she came to the center of the “stage” aka right in the middle of the playroom with the television pushed back. “Thank you, thank you! I wanted to say…” She looked over at Tamara with wide eyes.

“Birthday cards,” Tamara hissed.

“Yes! My birthday. Thank you for the cards. I’m fifty-eight but feel like I’m a hundred and eight.”

I let out a rip roaring laugh as I did every time Kiera repeated the joke. She’d heard it once on television and couldn’t stop repeating it. Tamara decided to use it to her advantage when planning out this skit for my evening’s entertainment.

Since John left, the girls had taken it upon themselves to fill the night hours with little performances for me. That way, according to Jacinda, “None of us would have to feel sad without daddy around.”

Sad was not how I felt without John around. Uneasy was more like it. Especially after the way we had left things.

To be fair to John, he didn’t know how we’d left things. After all, how could he have known that Pat and I lingered by the door listening to his conversation with Bonzo where he basically implied he wasn't sure he fancied me. After a month and change of letting him inside me again and again, letting him drown himself in the softness of my collar bone, flirt with me while everyone’s backs were turned.

After all that he wasn’t sure if he “fancied” me.

It was proof to me I should have resisted him.

However, the morning he left…made it so impossible to hate him. He woke me up by diving between my legs, languishing his tongue inside me, touching me like I was something holy. And when I had come not once but twice, he didn’t want anything in return.

“I needed to get my fill of you,” John had muttered. And then, after a kiss to the inside of my thigh I wish could have been welted onto my skin forever, he whispered, “I’m going to miss you so much.”

With several long, uninterrupted kisses amidst my bedclothes, that was our goodbye. The rest of his goodbyes were saved for the girls. With hugs and kisses and waves from the front step, we watched John and Bonzo drive off down Warren Lane.

Pat kept me company that first day. And after that…I was on my own.

Trapped between unfancied and missed, managing the house was a confusing task. It had only been four days and the girls were defaulting to me at every turn as their figurehead. Everything was up to me. John had not left instructions. And there was no threat of him returning in the middle of the night with anxiety over how I’ve stepped into the role left by Maureen.

Except I hadn’t. Not really. My presence in the Baldwin girls’ life was pear-shaped motherhood.

However, with John away in Headley, I was what they had to cling onto. John called every night, but he didn't have much time or energy to spare to them as he was still getting their bearings. My personal interactions with him were quick and to an end.

As it should be. The girls needed him. I didn’t.

I don’t, goddammit.

The nights had been long without him.

But the girls’ performances made the nights a little easier to bear.

“Tonight, we have a treat with you with star in the making Su Pollard singing an Oklahoma! favorite –”

“Everything’s up to date in Kansas –” Tamara began to belt, having changed into a flowery caftan from my closet and a yellow wig she made up of spaghetti noodles, twine, and glue.

“Not that one!” Kiera retorted.

I laughed loudly. “That was good,” I muttered, glasping my hands to my chest. “That was very clever.”

Tamara pretended to be shocked, shook her head to recalibrate, and then began to sing, “I’m just a girl who cain’t say no –“

The girls had become quite taken with the show Opportunity Knocks, a televised talent competition that included a postal voting system which meant every week, along with all of my other letters, I would mail the household vote off to ITV. The things you do to see children smile.

Unlike a professionally judged competition which would of course reward contestants with the most talent, Opportunity Knocks’ public judging system often allowed for some questionable winners.

“But will Su’s spotlight dim when up against –“ Kiera continued.

“Arf! Arf!” Jacinda barked, now on her knees with her tongue hanging out and two paper dog ears on her head held up with a headband.

“Weezy, the singing Jack Russel!”

“I know how this one ends!” I announced excitedly as Jacinda began singing “Happy Birthday” in a warbling dog voice. Su Pollard and the Jack Russel were actual contestants in the previous cycle of the show.

Guess who the girls voted for?

“This and more on tonight’s Opportunity Kno –“ Kiera’s excitable cry was cut off by the ringing of the telephone.

Jacinda was the first to alert, like a true Jack Russel would. “Daddy!”

“Hold on, girls,” I said, assuming role as the offset producer. I picked the phone out of the cradle. “We’ve got a call from the BBC. Sir Curran –” I answered. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”

John’s growing smile could be heard through the telephone. “Ah, you remembered I’ve been knighted.”

“How could I forget, sir?”

The girls all crowded around me on the sofa, Tamara over the back, Jacinda at my hip, and Kiera right under my arm, struggling to get comfortable in her father’s jacket.

“So, has the BBC come back to beg for our talents?”

“Mm. Depends. Let me talk to the talent.”

Adorably, the first night of our silly skits, John had wanted in on the action even though I could hear the exhaustion in his voice. So he played the role of Director-General of the BBC, Sir Charles Curran. Damn him for continuing to be so utterly charming.

I smiled and held the phone out for the girls. “Sir Curran for the talent, ladies.”

The girls clamored for the phone, all of them screaming as their various roles. I retracted the phone out of their reach. “One at a time, ladies. And dog.”

Jacinda barked and panted. I patted her head lovingly as Tamara snatched the phone from my hands.

“Sir Curran, Su Pollard here –”

“But I’m Hughie Green! I should get to speak first,” Kiera whined.

“Shhh, you’ll get your turn,” I told her and pulled her into my chest.

Kiera pressed her cheek against my bosom and harrumphed until Tamara’s turn was over, then harrumphed more when Jacinda took the next turn, citing that she was the second eldest and therefore should get the second turn.

By the time it got to Kiera, she was weepy and could barely hold the phone herself so I held it for her. “S-sir Curran? They are being very unfair to me.”

I stifled a laugh, overhearing John tutting Kiera and then coddling her in the best way he knew how. While they spoke, Tamara and Jacinda set to cleaning up the stage.

“No, they’re not nice to me. They’re never nice to me.”

“Kiera…” I patted her back and eyed Tamara who gave me a shrug. The bane of Kiera’s existence would always be that she was the youngest and smallest, therefore everything was very unfair to her while the reality was most everything was unfair to Tamara. Still, I remained impartial.

“Yes, Julia’s nice to me. But Julia has to be nice so that doesn’t count.” Kiera waited and then let out a frustrated screech. “I am not tired, Daddy!” meaning she was indeed very tired and bedtime was imminent. “You’re mean too!”

Kiera shoved the phone up into my face. I could hear John intonating carefully, “Kiera, love, this is the only time you get to talk to me today and you’re choosing to be grouchy.”

“You have to say goodbye,” I whispered to Kiera, but she shook her head, shoved me away, and ran out of the room.

“Kiera? Hello? Is anyone there?”

I sighed and pressed the phone to my ear. “I’m afraid Mr. Greene can be rather dramatic when he’s in need of beauty rest.”

“Mm, I know a few people like that. Mr. Page wasn’t up until noon.”

I giggled, but stopped myself when I felt Jacinda look at me. I covered the receiver and nodded toward the door. “Girls, you head up to bed. Check on your sister if you can. And say goodnight to your father.”

I held the phone out for both of the girls to cry out their goodnights as they loped out of the room.

“Well, at least they sound like they’re in good spirits,” John murmured.

“Yes, they are. Everything was going swimmingly up until you’re call.”

“Oh, well I beg your pardon.”

I pinched my nosebridge. “Sorry, that’s not what I meant.”

He laughed, a hiccupping quiet thing. “I know you didn’t. I’m giving you a hard time.”

I paused, letting his breath shuffle into my ear. Other than the static of the phone, it was as if he was in bed with me.

“And you, Julia?”

“Me? Just fine. You?”

John sighed. “Fine. Tired. We’ll be working a little while more today, probably.”

“You ought to be the one to sleep in tomorrow. Give Jimmy a run for his money.” Jimmy's name made my mouth immediately hot, uncomfortable, dangling bait for John.

“I like the way you think,” John replied, the warm tone of his voice remind me of his arms wrapping around me. “No, every time I decide to be a handful, someone always outdoes me. I’m resigned to being agreeable.”

I chewed on my lower lip. “Well, that’s not always a bad thing.”

“I’m glad you think so.”

Since he'd left, our phone conversations were normally limited to a short back and forth, often a veiled one if the girls were in the room, ending with one of us trailing off and the other going, “Well, I'll let you go.” Unceremonious.

We hadn’t learned how to care for one another from afar. I wasn’t sure if we’d ever learn it.

I tugged on a lock of my hair. “I should get the girls in bed and –”

“Listen, are you particularly tired tonight?”

I froze, fingers tightening around the phone. For him, I would stay awake for days. “No. Not particularly.”

“Then I’ll give you a call when we’re done. Say around half past eleven. Is that alright?”

I started salivating, my mouth preparing for hours of conversation. “Yes, that’s qu-quite alright.”

“Oh good. Good, I’ve…I’ve really needed to hear your voice more than just a few moments at a time.”

I leaned back on the couch and pressed my palm to my head, smacking it over and over. This man was eluding my ability to categorize him. “Yes, it’d be nice then to chat,” I said after a moment too long of leaving him hanging. “I want to hear about everything going on there.”

John laughed. “Trust me, Julia, I don’t know if you want to hear everything going on here.”

Oh, but I did. Every sordid detail. The drinking, the drugs, the inevitable discussions of women and perhaps parades of them too. I wanted it all.

“Alright, dear girl, I’ve got to go.”

Dear. Girl. Bloody fucking hell.

“Half past eleven. You have the right to go to sleep on me if I’m a minute late.”

“I’ll wait at least two before I give up on you.”

John hummed. “You’re quite a romantic, are you?”

“Not all women would give a man two extra minutes, but me? Well…” I drew my foot up my leg delicately. “I’m a romantic.”

“Be careful with that voice, you’re going to put me in a compromising position.”

I squeezed my eyes shut, my body all aflutter imagining what he was imagining. “God, you have to bring that up right before I’m going to say goodbye?”

He let out a low chuckle and then: “Half past eleven.”

“Half past eleven,” I repeated.

And then I heard the click of him hanging up. I pressed the phone to my chest and sighed heavily. This is bad…this is so –

I wasn’t left alone with my thoughts for more than five seconds before I heard a sharp cry from upstairs and my name being called with tearful anger by Miss Kiera.

You’ll be pleased to know that after a hellish bedtime routine and nighttime shower where the water would not get hot enough, John called. In fact, he called early. Eleven o’ three.

He kept me up until nearly two. Talking about nothing and everything.

Not a mere mention of our bodies. The way they had begun to gravitate toward one another. The familiarity we had earned from John becoming a landmark in my bed.

Yet the want was all the same.

“We should get to bed, shouldn’t we?” I asked after a long silence, my eyes falling shut as I sprawled out across my small sofa.

“Must we?”

I hummed.

“Oh, I know that hum. That’s a tired hum.”

I wondered how many times he’d heard Mo hum over the phone, across an ocean. Made me sad to realize he couldn’t run home if he needed her. No man can run on water, even with the most profound love in his heart.

“I’m sorry I can’t give you my eleven o’clock number.”

“Mmmwhat would it be?”

“’So long, farewell…’” John sang the first bars of a tune from The Sound of Music.

I snorted. “You’ve been spending too much time with Robert, haven’t you?”

“Suppose so, Julie Andrews.”

I may have been able to keep this up until morning if he kept making me swoon.

“You better not pull the curtains down to make any outfits for the girls. Especially not in the playroom. I’m fond of those.”

“What about a kerchief for my hair?”

John laughed. “Don’t get cheeky. I’ll be checking them over when I get home." Saliva moved in his mouth. "Although the blue would certainly suit your eyes.”

My body was gleefully numb until we said goodnight.

After all, a man wouldn’t know the eye color of a woman he didn’t fancy, would he?

Behind the Velvet Curtain with Mark Leo | In Conversation

Whether it be studying history, liking the music, or participating in the fashion of another era, it always feels easy to say that you were born in the wrong generation. Despite his greased-up pompadour and eclectic taste in music, Mark Leo isn’t one of these people. In fact, Leo believes he was born in the right generation. From the suburbs of Macomb, Michigan, Leo is a rebel with a cause, looking to break barriers and create a sound uniquely his own with the help of his band Lyons. With a modern heart and 1950’s inspired soul, Leo serves as the frontman and manager of the group. Starmaker Machine has known Leo for a while, so it was only a matter of time before we joined creative forces and sat down together for an interview.

There are several ways that artists first become acquainted with performing— some fake it until they make it, others are naturally born with it. Though being a natural born performer isn’t an accolade that many can claim, Leo can almost recall exactly when he fell in love with the spotlight.

KITTY QUINN: In 1972, Elvis said, “The first time that I appeared on stage, it scared me to death. I really didn’t know what all the yelling was about. I didn’t realize that my body was moving. It’s a natural thing to me. So to the manager backstage I said, ‘What’d I do? What’d I do?’ And he said ‘Whatever it is, go back and do it again’”. So, for you, what was the exact moment when you realized you were meant to perform?

MARK LEO: It wasn’t a moment on stage that made me realize that it was what I was supposed to do. It was some kind of thing that was handed to me. The earliest I remember thinking about performing and playing guitar or being an entertainer was when I was about three. I remember that it was just what I wanted to do. And then obviously as I did it more and more, I started loving it— it was really exhilarating. It’s almost unexplainable. Like, how did me at three years old know I was going to enjoy it so much? It’s in the universe or something.

QUINN: How important is it for you to be writing your own songs rather than performing someone else’s?

LEO: I feel it’s very important. I mean, if we were just performing covers, we’d just be a tribute act. The fact that we are writing our songs with various influences is what makes it actually a serious thing, you know? And when we perform a cover, we never perform it like the original artist did. I like to keep a couple covers in a set to show what we do to them and what I hear. The songs I listen to feel like they have a lot of blanks to be filled in, whether it be stuff from Sun Records or basically anything from the 50’s really— especially the rock and roll. You don’t really understand how wild it is just from listening to it, your mind has to fill in the blanks and you really have to get used to it. That’s when you really realize how it’s supposed to sound. Whether it be the recording equipment not being as good or it just not translating well on the recordings back then, I want to play it how I hear it. On first listen to a song like “Whole Lot of Shakin’ Going On” by Jerry Lee Lewis, it sounds kind of tame. Once you understand it, it becomes one of the wildest rock and roll recordings ever made— including everything after it. It’s crazy how it works and it’s why people don’t have the respect for 1950’s music that they used to. So much has to be filled in because of how it was recorded, but I feel like with modern recording equipment it could be captured better.

QUINN: I know you write a majority of the songs for Lyons, so what inspires you to write? Take me through the process.

LEO: Right now we’re starting to get more collaborative with songwriting, but a lot of songs still start out with just my ideas. For me when I’m writing a song by myself, it always just starts when my mind is clear or when I’m doing something that doesn’t take much thought— like when I’m at work or driving. It always starts with a melody or hook and then I build it around there. It’s usually melody and lyrics first and then I figure out music later on guitar or piano or whatever’s closest to me. If I’m out and about, I’ll make a voice memo on my phone to make sure I can remember the melody. No matter when inspiration strikes, I always make sure I get it down because after a week it’s forgotten, it’s gone.

Coming with almost any act inspired by prior generations, comparisons to any icons even slightly reminiscent are inevitable. Leo has especially been compared to Elvis Presley, but there’s more to it than what meets the eye. While Elvis is one of the most well-known icons of all time, there are so many others who came before and even after that have since been forgotten. Leo’s musical and stylistic inspirations are quite diverse, having references ranging from prior to the 1950s to modern ones such as Bruno Mars. Unlike his contemporaries, he is not mistakenly copying a specific person or aesthetic, it’s refreshing to see someone who embodies the spirit without being entirely derivative. Those who really stand out are the ones who make an effort to stay true to themselves by interpreting their inspirations in a way that is entirely individual to them. The most telling thing about someone who considers themself an artist is how they can interpret and mold another artist’s work into something entirely brand new and unique to them.

QUINN: Speaking of songs other people wrote, is there a song that you wish you wrote?

LEO: Oh, so many, oh my gosh. Even out of the 50’s vein, I wish I wrote so many Bruno Mars songs. Bruno Mars’ songwriting style is just so good. I wish I wrote “Fuck You” by CeeLo Green, “Cornerstone” by Arctic Monkeys, “Locked Out of Heaven” by Bruno Mars and I wish I wrote so many other Bruno Mars songs. Like “Treasure”, “If I Knew” from his second album— which is borderline a doo-wop song. It’s like “God, why didn't I write this?!”. It’s just so relatable. And then, when I was first seeing Mac Saturn live, so many of these songs are like, “Why didn’t I write that man?! These are so good!”. It’s hilarious because it was the first time that there was actually a band making their name locally where I wished I wrote some of their songs. It’s a really supportive thing. But as far as other songs go, I think that a lot. That’s just outside of the 50’s vein. Obviously there are many doo-wop and early rock and roll songs that I wish I wrote, but I’ll hear a lot of pop and be like “Damn, why didn’t I think of that?”. It has to do with subject matters. It’s like, I’ve experienced the same thing and I didn’t think to write a song about it. It always makes me go “Damn!”— but it's okay because I like the songs anyway. [laughs]

QUINN: Aside from the artists you’ve mentioned, who or what inspires you the most? Generally or musically speaking.

LEO: Well, musically speaking I’m inspired the most by Dion. So much about Dion is what I want to be. He’s got grit but he’s also got classiness. He’s been described as the link between Frank Sinatra and rock and roll. I was inspired by Dion from the first time I heard him. I was inspired by his voice, I was also inspired by his doo-wop influence in there. I am also musically inspired by Gene Vincent and his guitarist Cliff Gallup, I also love Gene Vincent’s style and manner of singing. I also love the way old jump blues singers sing, like Wynonie Harris and Roy Brown. I try to sing like them. As far as dance moves go, I’m really inspired by Jackie Wilson. I try to really study up on Jackie Wilson. And of course Elvis Presley inspired that as well.

Something very interesting to be learned about Leo is that he is not one to discount the complexity of pop music. A lot of musicians who are outside the realm of pop music tend to write it off as unsophisticated because it can be enjoyed by a wider audience. While not all pop music is groundbreaking or even multi-faceted, Leo gives credit where it’s due. He understands the importance of having an open mind as an artist because being confined to one vision tends to be a blatant disservice to the artistic process. In Leo’s case, without the meshing of several different sounds, new genres could never be born. He was a teenager in love with the fun danceability of rock and roll and wanted to be able to create music that would make anyone want to dance. It’s people like Leo who make the simple act of listening to music into a more immersive and compelling experience— an experience that leaves you desiring more.

QUINN: I think that as a group, you guys are very unique sounding and that you don’t really hear music similar to Lyons. What went into curating a sound that feels very unique to you as a person and Lyons in general?

LEO: I always knew that I didn’t want to be a rock band, you know? I realize not many people really know the difference between what rock is and what rock and roll is, and how rock and roll was originally meant to be dance music and how that evolved into rock. I wanted danceable music that was more inspired by pre-Beatles than post-Beatles. I mean, it was hard not to come up with a unique sound because I was a teenager that only listened to 1950s and early 60’s music, like religiously. So when that’s all my influences and I want to add a pop sound, it’s going to be unique because nobody’s been like that before. When Lyons started it was strictly a rockabilly trio. It took a while before we found what makes us unique. At first, it was just a Stray Cats wannabe thing and then it was an Arctic Monkeys wannabe thing, and then there became a point where we were no longer a wannabe and actually came into our own sound. That just took a while to hone in.

QUINN: Yeah, you have to experiment and imitate first before you find yourself in the end.

LEO: Yeah, exactly. I always wanted to be a pop group but could never get rid of what makes me, “me”. I was always greasing my hair and being 1950s, that’s just the stuff I love. Sometimes you hear it in pop music, like for example “All About That Bass” had a very early 60’s influence. You’ll hear a lot of these backing vocals on modern pop records that really sound like 50s or early 60s, so I decided to just take that and really run with it.

QUINN: Would you ever consider venturing into other genres?

LEO: Honestly I don’t even know how I’d describe our sound to begin with.

QUINN: Your genre is pretty hard to pinpoint but in a good way. Like, you guys are making your own way with it in a sense.

LEO: Yeah, I remember that being what I wanted to do when I was fifteen. I remember thinking, “I really want to do something that hasn't been done before”. What The Beatles did was draw inspiration from The Everly Brothers and Elvis Presley and ran with it in their own direction. Then everyone was doing what The Beatles were doing and that’s where it stopped; nobody looked before them again to make their own branch of the tree. Not to say that we’re doing it yet, but at least that’s the goal. As far as another genre for the future and more sounds, I don’t know. I feel like a lot of different sounds come up. I’m a pretty big James Brown fan, especially 1960s James Brown. I love that “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag” type of sound— That early funk, you know? I love experimenting with that. There are Lyons songs now that have that kind of influence that we’ll be showing. It’s pretty much whatever sounds good, I guess.

Your audience finding you as a musician can be just as challenging as finding your own sound. There’s a lot of uncertainty when it comes to being an artist in general. When you put your work out into the world, there’s no way of knowing how others will interpret it. There’s a lot of bravery that goes into it, you cannot guarantee everyone’s satisfaction even though it’s something you desperately crave more than anything else. Leo takes on a lot of responsibility when it comes to Lyons— being both the manager and frontman takes a lot of effort, so when that is finally reciprocated with support and excitement from others, it can be highly gratifying. Having shows, especially starting out, there’s always a 50/50 chance that the turnout may or may not be what you expect. If there is a large turnout and others receive your work well, it can be a satisfying moment where you can directly see that all of the work you’ve been doing has finally paid off. Though any artist can say that they’re exclusively producing work for the love of art, there’s no denying the sense of achievement that comes along with others appreciating what you do.

QUINN: Despite being pretty young and relatively new on the music scene, what would you say your biggest accomplishment has been thus far?

LEO: I would say The Loving Touch show. I booked it, I marketed it— I did so much for that and I was just so glad that so many people showed up. That’s kind of big for me. A week before that show, I didn’t know how many people were going to show up, you know? it’s something you don’t know until the day of. When I’m doing all of the management stuff and being the frontman, sometimes it takes a toll. [laughs]

QUINN: That show was great, by the way. I remember seeing you guys in 2021 at your first “real” show at The Hot Rock, and I could see how much you have evolved and gotten tighter as a band. If you can think that far, where do you hope to see yourself or Lyons in five years?

LEO: Thank you. I mean, I don't want to jinx anything, but in five years I hope to just consistently grow. As far as the live show, I would like a touring live show with a saxophone or a small horn section and two female backup singers. That would be ideal for our sound. Going back to Bruno Mars, I’m really inspired by his live show because it’s highly energetic and has a lot of instrumentation. Despite its retro influence, the top audience could still get down with it. I’m very much inspired by him.

As a musician, there are so many avenues to be explored when trying to make a name for yourself. On Leo’s journey, he has and will continue to reroute when roadblocks present themselves in his creative endeavors. Though he’s not exactly where he wants to be yet, he offers some wisdom to those looking to get a jumpstart on any type of artistic path.

QUINN: What advice would you give to someone who has a passion for writing music or performing but aren't quite sure where to start?

LEO: Really it’s the same advice for anything— just get started and figure it out along the way. You can’t just lay out a bulletproof plan. I hear a lot of people say that they’re just going down a road with no destination and trucking forward, but you’ve got to find a destination. And when there’s a road closure, you have to find a different road. There are plenty of roads to get somewhere and if there's a road closure, you’ll be able to find another way to get there. The best thing to do is just start because there’s never going to be a time where every light is green.

QUINN: That’s pretty solid, I like that analogy a lot. I have one more question for you. If you could pick one album, book or movie to represent your life or how you want to live your life, what would that be?

LEO: Runaround Sue by Dion. It’s pretty much my favorite album of all time. Everything about that album is just “me”.

QUINN: Is there a specific thing about that album that you can pinpoint as quintessentially you?

LEO: I don't know. Some people see the album as a narrative. You’ll see YouTube commenters that say different things turn the story a certain way. I don’t think it’s supposed to be like that but I do see it. I do draw parallels to my life with the lyrics on that album, whatever it may be. Just the whole sound of that album. It came out in ‘61 and has a lot of what came before it and also what comes after it. I’ve always been very inspired by his voice, his coolness and the doo-wop influence. That album is just really big for me on my list.

It’s an art within itself to become an artist. There’s a fire you have to have— a drive, a passion, a spark that must constantly be stoked in order to achieve anything paramount. While this was the first time I’ve formally sat down to talk with Mark Leo regarding his artistry and what goes into it, it’s clear to see that he has what it takes to become even more extraordinary. It’s not always easy; there are projects set aside, rejections, and a requirement for immense dedication among the many other responsibilities that present themselves. Leo is someone I’ve seen persist through these struggles and continue down his intended path, time and time again. It’s rare to meet people that hold so much potential and are willing to do what it takes in order to maximize it. Even in the many moments where things may seem stagnant, like tasting the most sour part of a candy, sweetness follows shortly after. Take Leo’s advice and go, even if the lights aren’t all green.

hes my personal favourite from the game so youve probably seen and will continue to see a lot of him from me lol, heres some more photos *:))

hes from a very wealthy family (canonically richest in japan iirc) and the heir to a large company conglomerate. but he also has a chronic illness, which is a VERY important component in understanding his character and actions.

hes the leader of his idol group, fine, which consists of him and three others: wataru hibiki, tori himemiya, and yuzuru fushimi. youve probably also seen a lot of them from me too, but i wont go into detail on them here. heres a photo of them though! (left to right: wataru, eichi, tori, yuzuru)

he was presented as one of the main antagonists within the first game's main story, which revolved around the protagonist group trying to cause a revolution in their school (that eichi was the student council president of)

he plays a much more neutral role in the second games main story (which takes place a year after the first year, so eichi as well as the other third years from the previous game have all now graduated), where he still acts as the leader of fine but also representative of his own entertainment agency, starmaker productions (or starpro for short). the main protagonist group of this game works under starpro so he does make some important appearances in there.

he can be kind of controversial/disliked in some of the fandom spaces because of some things he did in the past before the events of the first game (which even i agree were fucked up) but i do also think its important to consider his circumstances at the time (just out of hospital and incredibly scared that he could suddenly end up back there at any time). its a very long story (waaaayyy too much for me to go into here lol) so i highly recommend doing your own research if youre interested!! although i will say exercise caution with reading as the stories, especially the pre-first main story ones, can get quite dark at times (the crazy content warnings are Not a joke)

you can find music by his group on youtube (and i think also spotify?? but i cant confirm that one as i dont use it lol) and his solo song here!! i might be a bit biased but he has one of my favourite voices in the entire game i think its very pretty <3

Heya.

I’d like to state that I would certainly be a disappointment as a guru or spiritual practitioner. If you are Christian and wish to be more open Baha’i people learn from all world religions and are Christian similar to druidic practice. If I was Christian that would be where I would be if even just for the please toss my body in a hole at my house and be done with it... strange and legal funeral, only and specifically for Bahai I think. A Klingon rite haha. She, a Baha’i, was my best friend at 17 when I left the nest; spent 1-2 years smoking and drinking coffee all night at the Denny’s, she formed more of my current beliefs than did the first 14 years of my life as LDS and she has also influenced me later in life. Helped me become slightly less naive. She has a mosquito tattoo maybe because the existence of a entity as thoroughly irritating parasitic and useless says something about god and reality, it’s seems maybe anti-Daoism, she would ask as if you really feel kinship to Trump who has absolutely no human value and yet supposedly is just another us in a different washing machine at another time. Fierce human being and honestly a harder hitter than me spiritually. Has a deaf child which has given me a curiosity towards sense disabled people I've never been able to entertain. She is a writer/teacher hardcore punk. My wife in some other life where I didn’t leave rural Oregon. (Maybe, but definitely first soulmate)

Religion/spiritual studies follow definitely skip-able just leaving access if anyone wants to know.

I have an affinity to Shinto because it’s warm bubbly paganism without any specific carnal or violence worship. Modern Shinto is for me hayao miyasaki on the positives and mushishi on the destructive, it’s acceptable stories for children to learn how to coexist in a ecosystem and the scientist bits of me approve and there’s no doctrine which is why I am openly recommending it as it is entirely non hostile and about coexistence. Shinto does believe one obvious principle that Kami pervades all things like us in that radishes are essential of the same stuff. This feels like what I learned from shaman type journeys.

I fibbed before when I said I blame objects I did that specifically to elicit a response in opposition as I want you to be on the side of your stuff as you should want to protect sacred things and have that state of mind. That rare use of false manipulation was slightly premeditated, but it is a unusual thing for me and it was done intuitively. I like to believe stuff can have magic in it. I think the guru/teacher archetype is hard wired in all of us but my relationship to that part of me is not one trained to nor would recommend to others but for fun and enjoyment of being aliveness.

The original Kino’s Journey is a really interesting combination of Buddhism and what it is to go through living and dying and how to act ethically. Little bit like Starmaker(Olaf Stapleton) or maybe Star Trek but old school. The remake is decent additionally but i stan the original. I dislike the stodgyness of Buddhism and it seems like they washed their historical humanitarian abuse from what they claim is their origin, they also believe that abortion should not be allowed which if you believe that you can be warmer there than I feel about that. I do think they are a good thing for the world in a cognitive and modern compassionate sense. Similar to why I didn’t find to much interest it Aboriginal cultures I’ve gotten to know it’s often a old dude being traditional in a lot of cases. Every tribe is different though right.

I have weird feelings saying it, but I’m much into liberation of bonds and freedom of choice where your choices are within proper ethical standards of harm and kindness and I didn’t really realize it till my 30s how U.S. of an ideal this is. About Buddhism if you didn’t know rebirth doesn’t work the way most external parties believe of Buddhist reincarnation. Death means heaven or hell realms and what is reborn is the continuation of the causation that was your imprint or dharma and following your death that thread is continued by another entity and that is prev/next life connection. A different person. I don’t believe in heaven or hell but just the hum of matter becoming energy becoming matter again but I disbelieve more of my superstitions than I believe. I may discuss random superstitions later who knows but a lot of them are obviously caused by anecdotal patterns. (Synchronicity aka pattern match which the brain excels at)

It seemed necessary to write this, if you want faith or devotional sources I don’t currently practice those intentionally and don’t see it happening. I was into Krishna for a while, but I like worship through what is in my presence in a complete form. I like not knowing; that can be uncomfortable if you are used to faith. I think it’s mystifying and amazing that there are so many mysteries that seem to be agnostic as the only rational principle of access. I just know I’m ruled by magic of emotions and heart and the brain forges through in disregard. Curiosity and convincing yourself to try on belief is something I hope is of wider utility to the human experience. I do not believe doubt is bad for you and I feel no need to apologize if I have created it in you. Repeating the intro I’m not an answer guru nor plan to be I’m just another curious cat.

On November 14, 1940, Badia Masabni opened her final nightclub, the Casino Opera. She had previously operated clubs in the Emad el-Din section of Cairo, Alexandria, and Giza. The Casino Opera's location was at Opera Square in Cairo.The Casino Opera's prestigious location, plus Badia's savvy at running a successful entertainment establishment, led to the club becoming the preferred place for King Farouk, his nobles, and the wealthy elite to gather.

Many of the entertainers who worked for Badia were either already household names before she hired them, or became stars because Badia's clubs showcased their talents: Ismail Yassin (comedian), Tahia Carioca (dancer and movie star), Samia Gamal (dancer and movie star), Farid al-Atrache (singer, composer, oud player, movie star), and many more.Even today, Badia is remembered as the "Queen of Theaters", or "Starmaker".

She is recognized as the founder of raqs sharqi as we know it today. (The term raqs sharqi was in use before Badia's era, but Badia added some innovations to the dance to fit her creative vision.) She claimed in a 1966 interview to have invented the "Eastern orchestra"; that is, an orchestra consisting of both European instruments (such as violin and accordion) and Middle Eastern instruments (oud, qanoun, etc.)Badia owned and operated the Casino Opera for 10 years, finally selling it to Beba Ezz el-Din in 1950.
