Stardew Valley beginner’s guide
Stardew Valley beginner’s guide
This grid pattern will be beneficial in the long run as you get more items like scarecrows, sprinklers, walking paths, and more. Those items are key for players looking to optimize their daily farming tasks and multiple 3×3 layouts will get the most benefit from them. Setting up small plots of land in this way allows you to categorize and split up your crops too. You may want to put crops that…

Any recommendations on what hm game to start with?
honestlyyy this is always a pretty hard one to answer because it really just depends on your expectations/what you're looking for haha. though a majority of the hardcore fans find it to be repetitive (me included lol) if you're a complete beginner to the series, story of seasons: pioneers of olivee town is very slow-paced and a lot of new players found it to be a perfect entryway into the franchise :) there aren't really any weird mechanics to take into account and you can play through it pretty easily without any extra guides or searching things online lol. its a lot more like stardew valley tbh which wasn't really my cup of tea but i know it is a lot of others'!!!
otherwise it really does just depend on what you want, all the games are different and have their own unique focus!!! if you like the general farming and community aspects, a wonderful life i feel has the most in depth livestock and crop systems, particularly with the breeding and hybrid crop mechanics; and it's by far the one where your relationships with your family and townspeople get fleshed out the most. trio of towns is really beginner friendly and i think it has some of the best and most well written characters in the franchise, as well as having a lot of unique recipes, crops and festivals with the 3 different cultures!!! animal parade is another one that's pretty well balanced, though it starts out pretty slow i love the depth of all the rival couples/kids and especially your own family, and it's overall a very charming game that's p easy to get the hang of.
honestly they're all pretty good!! i think the only ones i wouldn't recommend for a first timer would probably be most of the older ds titles-- a lot of people have nostalgia for them since they came out in their childhoods, but they can be pretty grind-y and hard to understand for someone who's just coming into the series. the first game to use the story of seasons title (SOS1) is also pretty intimidating for even some more experienced players lol. for the most part though just look into some guides and gameplays and see what catches your eye!!! :D

august update: for real this time.
July was probably the busiest day of my entire life regarding my day job – very fulfilling and good career-wise, but I was pretty bummed that it kept me away from larger projects. I’ve really enjoyed starting the Stardew Valley story since its updates are quite short and easy to write, but I’m even more excited to have time for larger things this month.
This month’s definite plans:
Posting more of the commissions I’ve worked on over the summer. Lots of variety in them, including some OC / OC and OC / Reader. Should be a fair bit of spice and some longer pieces in there.
Continuing current series – that includes one or two chapters of the Stardew Valley fic and one chapter of Doctor Valentine is Dead over the course of the month.
This month's maybe plans:
Reopening commissions before I'm back at graduate school.
More Beginner's Guide to Hematophagia. Maybe. If I have time. I pwomise I'll try. The title of the next entry is Like A Religion and it's very fun. At the very least I'll break ground on it.
Thanks for bearing with me during this busy time, and thank you again to all the wonderful folks who have commissioned, tipped, left kudos and comments, and drawn amazing art inspired by my writing. It really means the world to me. <3

I apologize for this post being rather long. I wanted to write about Graveyard Keeper as an inexperienced player, and as someone who bought Graveyard Keeper thinking that I was going to get a similar gameplay experience to Stardew Valley. I know that I’m not the only one who bought Graveyard Keeper after reading a few online articles about how similar the two games are.
*Brief summary: I bought Graveyard Keeper back in August and only have 12 hours into the game, but that’s because I don’t often play on my computer.
To those who are thinking about buying Graveyard Keeper in hopes of getting a ‘similar’ Stardew Valley gameplay experience; don’t. Graveyard Keeper isn’t at all similar to Stardew Valley, but I don’t discourage people from playing Graveyard Keeper. Just don’t go into the game thinking that it’s similar to Stardew.
A lot of website articles have Graveyard Keeper as a ‘similar’ gameplay experience to Stardew Valley because of the graphics, the mining/combat, fishing, management style gameplay, and farming. However, despite these similarities the two games are vastly different from each other.
- Unlike Stardew Valley, Graveyard Keeper doesn’t have any time limit. You're allowed to be out as late as you want and finish quests at your pace
- Graveyard Keeper is more of a quest focus game/story focus game. While maintaining a graveyard and upgrading your church
- Graveyard Keeper is more complex than Stardew:
* There’s more crafting in Graveyard
* You have to collect technology points to unlock parts of the skill tree, and even when you unlock certain technology you have to do other steps before your allow to use that technology:
^Like mining isn’t as straightforward as it is in Stardew. Graveyard Keeper you have to talk to the black smith which will give you the ability to build a furnace. After building a furnace you still have to earn technology points to unlock the mining skill on the skill tree, and then you can start mining basic materials
^Even getting a fishing rod isn’t that easy, but I won’t bore you any further about the skill tree
* Making money in Graveyard can be pretty difficult
These are just a few examples of how Graveyard Keeper is different from Stardew Valley.
Another thing from my own experience is that Graveyard Keeper can be confusing when you first play the game. Especially if you decide to go into the game blind. Both games (Stardew and Graveyard) drop you into the game, and allows you to figure the game out on your own.
- However, with Stardew it’s much easier to start the game because the game provides you with some farming seeds and gives you an objective to meet the NPCS which helps lead you further into the game.
- With Graveyard you’re dropped into the game with a few objectives to follow, and a crash course on how the skill tree works. Which can be overwhelming because there’s so much to do from the beginning and it’s hard to know where to go and how to start.
* I really enjoy going into any new game blind and just trying to figure it out as I go along. However, for Graveyard I followed the starting objectives, but quickly realized I wasn’t making much progress and at one point got stuck and didn’t know what else to do. I believe I was about 4 hours in and didn’t know how to get a fishing rod and I also accidentally used my first four iron parts to fix something instead of making a furnace which set me back.
* Graveyard Keeper is my only and currently first game that looked up beginner tips and a beginner guide on YouTube. I also read several Reddit posts about the game. And painfully decided that it was best to start a whole new game file and start from the beginning with the new knowledge I had. Luckily I only had 4 hours into the game and I hardly did anything within those four hours so it wasn’t much of a set back.
I personally feel that unlike Stardew Valley, Graveyard Keeper does not hold your hand at the beginning of the game and doesn’t provides you a good direction on where to go. From a beginner guide on YouTube I learned a lot of good information about what to do early game in Graveyard, a lot of which isn’t mentioned in the game. Like unlocking the quarry as soon as possible, and buying the teleportation stone to help get around the map faster. Once you get more of the skill tree unlocked, explore the map a bit more, and upgrade your church it’s much easier to know what to do and what you need to do to progress in Graveyard Keeper. At that point it’s just about collecting the resources and completing quests.
Overall, I really enjoyed playing Graveyard Keeper. I also really like how the game can be challenging at times especially for new inexperienced players. I personally wouldn’t compare Stardew Valley to Graveyard Keeper. The two games are very different from each other and because of that I like both games for different reasons. However, when I first played the game I was disappointed because I bought the game going into it believing that it would provide a similar gameplay to Stardew Valley. But after playing for a few hours and learning the game (and getting the notion that this is just a new game, not a Stardew Valley clone with a graveyard) I really enjoyed the experience.
So for those who want to buy Graveyard Keeper, just keep in mind that it’s nothing like Stardew Valley. If you’re looking for a fun challenging management game that is story/quest focus I highly recommend checking the game out. I also read on Reddit that Graveyard Keeper is really buggy on consoles and that it’s best played on PC.

Early Game Tip/Guide for Stardew Valley
A friend of mine has been having trouble with the EARLY early game, so I wanted to help them out. This’ll cover the very early game, and then I’ll cover some tips for the FULL first year. I’ll be putting the whole thing under a read more so it isn’t cluttering ppl’s dashboards.
I’ll have a general idea of what to do the first 3 days or so, and then move to general tips/year 1 tips!
If this gets good reception, I might do other guides if people need them! Just ask and ye might receive sfdgfhfsdgfs.
I’ll also update this if I remember something else or get an idea from someone!
Day 1
First thing, of course, is get your parsnips planted and watered. Go to Pierre’s afterwards. With your 500g, buy 3 green beans, 3 potatoes, and 2 cauliflower. While cauliflower, overall, sells for more, invest in POTATOES in your first spring. You’ll sometimes get an extra potato when you harvest them, so you can get more money overall.
Make sure to get 50 wood for a chest as well. Put your extra tools away that you aren’t using for extra storage space.
After those are planted, go to the south (Cindersap Forest, where Marnie’s Ranch and Leah’s cabin are located). Go ALL the way south to the sewer exit at the bottom right of the area, over two small bridges connected by a tiny island with a single maple tree on it. The area down south will sometimes spawn spring onions. Check this area every day in spring in your first year. Spring onions don’t give you MUCH energy, but it’ll still be good in the long run.
Chop down as many trees as you can or pick up any foragables you see (check the beach as well for foragable shells) to try and reach level 1 foraging. Once you reach level 1, you can get tree seeds- acorns, pinecones, and maple seeds- and can craft field snacks.
Do NOT chop down the tree stumps right now unless they’re in the way! Tree stumps still spawn tree seeds, and chopping down stumps do NOT give you foraging experience! Only chopping the tops of the trees give you experience!
Check ALL the trash cans (just make sure a villager doesn’t see you bc they hate it), because sometimes food items or algae/seaweed pop out.
Don’t be afraid to eat foragables like dandelions, leeks, and horseradishes as well for energy.
Overall, if you can’t get enough energy-restoring items, don’t be afraid to go to bed early day 1.
Day 2
If you didn’t do it yesterday due to energy, go around your farm and scythe ALL the weeds/fiber you can. Sometimes they drop mixed seeds. Mixed seeds are random seeds you can plant. They’ll either give you parsnips, potatoes, or cauliflower seeds. But that means free seeds to plant! Easy profit. DO NOT CUT DOWN ALL YOUR TALL GRASS.
Willy will send you a letter. Go get the fishing rod, and fish in the ocean outside of Willy’s shop. Sell him any fish you get directly until about 2 pm or so, then go to Pierre’s with your new funds and get more seeds. Ideally potatoes, but if you wanna get a head start on an achievement, buy one or two of every seed- except fruit trees. You’ll need to sell one of every crop eventually. But you don’t have to worry about it right now if you don’t want to- you’ll have many more springs to come.
Check down south for spring onions. If you have level 1 foraging by now and can get tree seeds, shake the trees as you pass by. You get them more often by chopping them down, but shaking the trees can yield tree seeds for field snacks.
Spend today fishing, after that! Fish makes good money, and if you’re REALLY in a pinch you can eat the fish straight out of the ocean/river/lake. Or any seaweed/algae you fish up. Sometimes you’ll also fish up Joja Cola- a trash item you can consume for a little energy.
Day 3
It’s raining today, so you do NOT have to water! It always rains on Spring 3. If you’ve gotten money from fishing again after your initial stint, buy more seeds- you don’t need to plant them right away if the idea of all the watering is daunting, you can save them for when your first harvest is done and you need to replant.
If it’s a good luck day, spend the day clearing out your farm area around where you’re planting. Good luck days are the best for chopping trees because you’ll get more wood than on bad luck days.
If it’s a neutral or bad luck day, go fishing! You might fish up trash more often, but you’ll still be getting fish to sell! You can either ocean fish and sell to Willy directly, OR try at the mountain lake next to Robin’s house. Largemouth Bass are GOOD money early game.
No matter what you do, remember to check for spring onions!
General Early Game Tips
Check the tv EVERY day! It’ll give you tips, recipes, and you can check your daily luck and the next day’s forecast.
Build a Silo BEFORE building a coop or a barn! You’ll get a quest to build a coop after your first harvest. Do NOT do it right away. Get a SILO first, and then scythe up any grass on your farm! Don’t scythe all your grass (the tall grass, not the weeds that give you fiber/seeds) before you get a silo, because hay from Marnie is expensive at 50g per piece of hay.
Advanced tip for the previous one: Build ONE silo, and put a chest next to the silo. Use the empty barn/coop once you have it to grab ALL the hay from your silo and place it in the chest. Continue to scythe your grass and get hay, repeating the emptying process until all your grass is gone. That way you have a stock of hay before you get animals.
Once you have a steady supply of food and the mines are open, go to the mines as OFTEN as possible. If the day is neutral, good, or great luck, go mining! You’ll wanna get a head start on resources, and selling gems is good early game.
Wait for a rainy day to upgrade your watering can! Upgrading your tools takes two days: the day you give it to him, and the day after. Check the tv for when the next day is raining, and THEN upgrade your can.
Do NOT build the first sprinklers you get. Once you reach level 2 farming, you unlock the sprinkler crafting recipe. The basic sprinkler only waters 4 spaces, and it is a WASTE of copper and iron. Wait for the quality sprinkler recipe at level 6. It’s tedious to water, I know, but the quality sprinkler waters the 8 surrounding tiles vs the basic’s 4. A better use of materials.
Keep at least 1 to 5 of everything! You may end up with a lot of chests, but keeping a lot of things is REALLY handy. You’ll get little fetch quests from the bulletin board outside of Pierre’s shop often, and keeping a backlog of items helps with completing them- which gets you money and friendship points with the villager in question. This includes crops, fish, and mining materials like quartz and gems. I’d also advise keeping minerals from geodes after donating one of them to Gunther, as some are good gifts while others are used for fish pond requests.
Don’t forget animal tools! Marnie sells a bucket for milking cows, shears for shearing sheep, and heaters for your barns/coops! It gets real cold in winter, so animals need a heater placed in their respective buildings. Put one in every animal building you have- you only need one, don’t worry!
Make wild seeds! Wild seeds produce foragables for their respective seasons. Sell the spring, summer, and fall seed packets instead of growing them. The spring, summer, and fall wild seed packets sell for MORE than if you grew the seeds and sold the foragable items. Do NOT sell the winter seed packets!
General Year 1 Tips
Try and get level 4 foraging before Spring 15! You’ll get a passive perk that just says “+1 Berry harvesting”. From Spring 15 to 18, there are salmonberries in the bushes around Pelican Town. Whether you have level 4 foraging or not, collect these berries! It’ll help a LOT if you get two per bush, but if you check every single day you’ll get a lot of berries no matter what your foraging level is. They don’t give a LOT of energy/health, but because of the quantity you’ll get you’ll be fine.
Fish at the mountain lake when you have downtime! Largemouth bass are VERY valuable early game, if a bit tricky to catch.
Use low profit crops for energy! If you have extra parsnips from spring, you can either turn them into pickles later or keep them for energy/health.
Mushrooms or Bats! After a certain amount of profit is obtained, Demetrius will come to you and ask to use your farm’s little cave for an experiment. He’ll ask to either use it to cultivate mushrooms or invite a species of fruit bat to the cave. Mushrooms are produced every day, and you’ll get a random assortment of every mushroom species available (although their rarity plays a factor in how often they appear). Fruit bats leave you a slow supply of fruit- usually foraged berries, but sometimes fruit tree fruit as well such as apples, oranges, and cherries. Mushrooms are generally more valuable and common mushrooms provide good energy, while fruit bats are good for artisan goods and for gifts as fruit tree fruits are universally liked by everyone.
In your first summer, invest in Blueberries! In your first fall, invest in Cranberries! Both blueberries and cranberries give multiple harvests, and multiple berries per harvest. That means they’ll keep producing AND give you 3 berries per harvest. While the melon and pumpkin sell for more, you can get a few hundred berries within one season- upwards of a thousand if you plant a Lot like I do.
In the beginning of summer, you’ll unlock the bath house. The bath house is a hot spring building to the north in the mountains, initially blocked by boulders. You can sit in the water to regain energy!
Plant tree seeds outside of the bath house area. ALL the dirt around the bath house can have tree seeds planted. You’ll most likely get a bunch of pinecones, as there’s an abundance of pine trees both on your farm and in Cindersap Forest. Plant as many as you can, and let them grow to make a wood farm. I can get a full stack of wood because of how many trees you can plant.
Save some crops to sell at the END of a season! If you’re hurting for money, split your current harvest in half if you can and sell half. Put the other half away in a chest (preferably next to the shipping bin) to save for the final day in the season. That way you can be SURE you’ll have a decent amount to spend at the beginning of the next season.
Work on preserves jars and kegs asap, once you unlock their recipes. Preserves jars make jelly (from fruit), pickles (from veggies), aged roe (from fish eggs), and caviar (from sturgeon eggs). Kegs make wine (from fruit), beer (wheat), pale ale (hops), juice (veggies), and mead (honey). Buy some hops in summer and save them for when you get kegs! Hops also produce EVERY day, so be prepared for a backlog of hops!
Try and get animals in summer! Save spring for bolstering your wallet and equipment. Don’t worry about upgrading your coop/barn all the way right now, just get started on animals because animal products are very good your first year.
Upgrade things in winter! This can mean tools, or buildings! By winter you should have a GOOD bit of money and resources. Upgrade your tools as much as you can (you can do a lot of mining for ore in winter), and upgrade any coops/barns you have. You don’t HAVE to upgrade your house yet if you don’t want to/don’t plan on getting married anytime soon so, as you should have salmonberries still if you managed to collect a lot,  cooking isn’t a necessity. Mushrooms from the cave or fruit from the bats could also help here.
Buy animals in winter! If you can upgrade your coop/barn, get animals now while they don’t need to go outside. It’s a good idea to get pigs now if you can, as they take a long time to grow. That way they can come out fully grown and ready to get you truffles.
Winter seeds are good money! Every few levels, you’ll be able to craft wild seeds for each respective season. The winter seeds sell for more than just their packets alone, so grow them if you can! You can multiply the crop each time you harvest them most likely, so you can make a lot of money off of the foragables.
Mine and fish! Since you don’t have too much to do in winter, use the time to fish and mine for extra money and resources!

games i love and u should play, in no particular order:
chrono trigger
an old jrpg from the 90s, chrono trigger is a fantasy/sci-fi game about time travel, magic, and robots, with a fun plot, good gameplay, incredible characters, and one of the best soundtracks ever written.
youll find chrono trigger on best video game lists for a reason. its old, but its great. in fact, chrono trigger was the start and the inspiration for a lot of both jrpg mechanics and other games themselves.
ct is just one of those games You Should Play if you like video games. the base plot doesnt take forever - estimates are at about 20 hours, but you can speed through way faster - or, take the time to get over 10 endings, finish side quests, and have fun.
the beginners guide:
you know the Stanley Parable? this is the same creator.
the beginners guide is a short, introspective game i think everyone who creates content should play. its narrative, a man walking and talking you through short strange little games that his friend coda made. its about the process of creation, the reason, the rewards. the setbacks.
this is one of those games i had to sit quietly for a little bit after playing and feel some stuff. i try and replay it now and then, just cuz.
hatoful boyfriend:
okay. yes. i see all my friends groaning. youre about to as well. but hear me out.
hatoful boyfriend is a japanese dating sim with a twist.
you are a high school age human girl.
you go to a school for birds.
also, you live in a cave.
hatoful boyfriend is one of those games you think is a joke parody - and youre right, mostly, except if you stick with it long enough you stop laughing at the silly photorealistic bird jpegs. usually this is because youre either screaming or crying, but hey.
get through all the base routes and youll unlock the True Arc, which happens to be a murder mystery - and also explains what the fuck is up with the birds. and the human.
just. yes, the bird dating game (and its sequel, holiday star) has a plot. it has a lot of plot twists. some of em youll see coming. some of them you most certainly wont. listen, if you can barrel through the weirdness of it, its a fun, wild ride, and it has what is probably my favorite video game protagonist of all time.
(you, the player character, have base stats of 1 wisdom, 5 charisma, and 800 vitality. you run around screaming things like "MY HUNTER GATHERER BLOOD BOILS" before drop kicking your classmates, your heart is the size of the sun, and you wrestle buffalo for fun. this does not even begin to describe hiyoko's strangeness.)
undertale:
youre reading this on tumblr.
you know what undertale is.
just ignore the fans and the fandom and youll have a good time.
breath of the wild:
you probably know this one too. one of the more recent legend of zelda games, botw is an open world jrpg about a young hero waking up in the wild with no memories, but a huge responsibility.
listen. listen. i dont like games with fighting mechanics that require me to respond quickly. i am slow and bad at games. i also dont like games that are easy to get lost in, bc i am very easily lost, and botw has a HUGE open map. but this is probably one of my top three favorite games ever.
botw has it all - and all of it is amazing and unforgettable. characters, plot, gameplay, music, scenery, heartbreak, comedy-
this is another game you could blow through pretty quickly, or you could do what i did and finish every single sidequest and shrine and upgrade every piece of armor and then track down all 900 korok seeds. its up to you.
night in the woods:
indie side scroller/point and click about a 20 year old coming home from college to her hometown, a dying ex-mining backwater place called possum springs.
nitw is a mystery game, but its also about friendship, mental illness, the supernatural, and the slow, steady, inexorable decline of poor towns and the people in them as jobs disappear and the world crumbles.
its also really, really funny.
nitw also has two little side games - longest night and lost constellation - that are good!
stardew valley:
this is just a cute little farming sim. its well made. its fun. its addicting.
inherit a farm from ur grandfather as he dies on a fucked up bed, then escape to it from your menial soul-sucking office job to grow parsnips, raise cows, pet dogs, be gay, fall in love, make jam, fall down mineshafts, hit slime with swords, and buy probably-not irradiated sprinklers from a blob man in the sewers.
i have too many hours in this game.
pokemon mystery dungeon: explorers of sky
i am very tired of pokemon main games. i have been for years. i firmly advocate that the side games are where its at - and pmd:eos is The Best pokemon side game.
you are an amnesiac human-turned pokemon alongside your best friend, as you join an adventurers guild to explore new lands as well as rescue pokemon in need. but somethings going very wrong in the world, and you might just be connected to it all.
explorers of sky is like, the final version with more stuff, but time/darkness are both versions as well.
even when the plot twists are pretty foreseeable (this is a game written for kids, its pokemon) theyre still really good. i remember being a kid as my sister and i played this together and we both sobbed our little hearts out.
the soundtrack is phenomenal, and the gameplay is fun. its just a good game, yall!
off:
off is a french rpg with a free english translation available for download.
off is weird. you, the batter, are on a mission to purify the world. you travel through the zones of the world, defeating spirits and learning more and more about the strange, anxious drone-like inhabitants, the intimidating guardians, and the weird little side characters you meet - and, eventually, the strange child at the heart of it all.
off is slightly spooky, with a plot that that takes a bit to unravel, but its definitely worth it.
monster prom/camp:
a very lgbt+ friendly series, monster prom is a single or multiplayer american dating sim that really digs into the whole monster schtick. you pick your avatar from a list of monstrous choices, and then increase your stats in hope of being cool, charming, smart, etc enough to pick the right dialogue option and woo your intended monster beau.
monster prom is crass and heartfelt, with numerous wild and wacky endings. play it in a group, play it alone, but its funny and sweet either way.
summon an eldritch deity to watch naruto with you, aid your demon boyfriend in his quest to punch the sun, learn the meaning of life with a computer, get really high on illegal and dangerous substances with a ghost, and so much more.
inside:
spooky little puzzle side scroller/platformer
you are a little boy and you are trying to go somewhere. the world is grey and is trying to kill you.
something is very wrong.

september update
It felt great to be getting back to regular uploads, and although I'm back at graduate school, I want to keep that ball rolling and get back into bigger things this month.
Plans this month:
1-2 chapters of Stardew Valley fic
The most recent chapter of Doctor Valentine is Dead took longer than expected but it will be up this month
Finishing carrion town
Returning to Beginner's Guide to Hematophagia. If a next part of the series doesn't happen this month, at the very least I'll post some writing screenshots / updates here because It's Happening Yall Finally
One or two other small pieces, if I can hammer out all of the above?
Once carrion town is finished, I will be reopening commissions. I probably won't take more than one or two slots but I'm very excited to get into some new things!
Once again an enormous thankyou again to all the wonderful folks who have commissioned, tipped, left kudos and comments, and drawn amazing art inspired by my writing. It really means the world to me and I can't thank you enough. <3 <3
