Splotch Summer 2023!

Surprise folks! Splotch Summer is coming back! I'm paring it down a little to a couple splotches released a week but it’s all the same fun. Splotch Summer is where I share random paint spots, blobs, lines, etc. and invite others to add on in any way to draw what they see or imagine.

Here's an example. A pink and red-orange paint splotch, with some extra shape added to the bottom, details, and outline to make it a chicken!

Here's the plain image to get you rolling! Check my linktree for the folder of image files for the splotches, it will update as we go! The challenge officially starts on the first day of summer but go for it!

Introducing #SplotchSummer

It is hopefully to be an annual time of creativity and sharing. Splotch art is the exercise of making or using a pre-existing paint splotch, and adding on more details to complete the drawing.

Above: An example of a paint splotch and the completed splotch art using its form.

The simple example I give you here, we start with a brown paint splotch, it’s almost like an ink blot test. I saw a face, and some flame shapes. Then I just sort of went from there using colored pencil to make it a sort of demon/volcano face with a hand on its chin.

So that’s the goal and the process, to make a spot of some paint into something new! An animal, a character, a prop, it’s up to you!

This summer I will periodically be sharing scans of the watercolor paint splotches I’ve made, anyone can save the photos, and hopefully others will want to create something new and share it!

Splotch Summer will be a chill, low-pressure challenge. It takes place over the three months of summer, but there’s no specific amount anyone needs to do or special timeframe (besides summer).

I also encourage people to make their own splotches if they’re not inspired by the ones given! If you participate please tag it #SplotchSummer and tag me! I’ll definitely reblog participants :)
