The thing about social media is, it's made of people. If you want to run a social media platform, you've got to like people and be willing to work with people and manage people and - dare I say it? - lead people.

Because the people are not just your "product", as the popular saying goes. They're also your customers, your equipment, your currency, your infrastructure, your literal walls and roof and floor.

If you try to run a social media platform as if the platform itself makes the money and the people are incidental, or a problem, well. You'll soon find out that your magic platform doesn't exist any more. Because it was made of people.

Remember when Steve Huffman aka Spez said he will kick the moderators of subreddits that took part in the Blackout?

Well, he actually made good on his threat, and now the mods of some subreddit have reported that Reddit has outright threatened to ban them unless they reopen their subreddits.

It’s official: Spez took a page from Fascist dictators. He’s much worse than the Elongated Muskrat.

Alright y'all. I know a lot of my followers are here because they like reddit updates. I've stepped back onto reddit in a limited fashion to keep an eye out for things like this.

In light of spez's threats to deplatform moderators for bullying their communities into this protest, many dark subreddits have taken to reopening and explicitly holding polls regarding the nature of the protest. r/art and r/pics have both been nearly unanimously voted into being John Oliver fan subreddits. Which is hilarious.

r/showerthoughts has come up with a less clever but equally effective solution. And their poll is still active. So I would encourage people to go check that out. Don't return to reddit, but pop in to your favorite dark subreddits every once in awhile and see if they've come back from the protest with a poll concerning the future of the subreddit.

Even if you don't plan on going back to reddit. I like it here on tumblr, but I would also like to go back to reddit. Don't let the selfish "I don't care about other peoples' experience, I just want to be able to visit my subreddits" crowd define the future of reddit.
