I know it’s not the lunar new year yet for a while, but all this rabbit talk has got me thinking about Southern Reach again 💛

The moral I'm getting so far from the Southern Reach trilogy is that if you girlboss too hard you become absorbed by an unmentionably horrible and incomprehensible force (the psychologist)
HOWEVER if you girlboss just hard enough you become reborn as a free agent with superhuman abilities. And become a hot butch (the biologist)

The scene in Authority with Grace’s twisted elation at the former director’s return is both and incredibly uncanny and eerie scene, but at the same time reads, to me, a sorted of twisted romance. Here is the former director, coming back changed and frightened and bringing with her the end of Southern Reach and quite possibly the world as we know it, but all Grace can do is be unimaginably happy and excited at Cynthia’s return.

spoilers for The Southern Reach trilogy. but. I can't stop thinking about it ending on Gloria's letter to Saul. like the closer doesn't have anything to do with the cosmic horror or any answers about that its about how much Gloria still thought about and loved and cared for him and by proxy all of the human people on the Forgotten Coast, whose humanity has been erased both in the literal sense BY Area X and by the way the Southern Reach has treated Area X.

Slowly, painfully, I realized what I had been reading from the very first words of his journal. My husband had had an inner life that went beyond his gregarious exterior, and if I had known enough to let him inside my guard, I might have understood this fact. Except I hadn't, of course. I had let tidal pools and fungi that could devour plastic inside my guard, but not him. Of all the aspects of the journal, this ate at me the most. He had created his share of our problems -- by pushing me too hard, by wanting too much, by trying to see something in me that didn't exist. But I could have met him partway and retained my sovereignty. And now it was too late.

I just finished Authority! WOW that ending was incredible. I love how the book starts and ends the same way, with control peering over the water, but at the end he finally jumps.

“There came an incandescent light. There came a star in motion, the sun plummeting to Earth. There fell from the heavens a huge burning torch, thick flames dripping out behind it. And this light, this star, shook the sky and the beach where he had walked a second ago under a clear blue sky. The scorched intensity of the sudden object hurtling down toward him battered his senses, sent him sprawling to his knees as he tried to run, and then dove face-first into the sand. He screamed as the rays, the sparks, sprayed out all around, and the core of the light hit somewhere in front of him, his teeth smashed in his mouth, his bones turned to powder. The reverberation lived within him as he tried to regain his footing, even as the impact conjured up an enormous tidal wave like a living creature, aimed at the beach. When it fell upon him the weight, the immensity, destroyed him once more and washed away anything he could have recognized, could have known. He gasped and thrashed and hurt, dug his tortured hands into the shocking cold sand. The sand had a different texture, and the tiny creatures living there were different. He didn’t want to look up, take in his surroundings, frightened that the landscape, too, might have changed, might be so different he would not recognize it”
