Thoughts? 😎#OnSaturdaysWeWearBigDiamonds RePosted • @sothebysjewels Reported to have been initially created in 1767 and passed down generations within the Spencer family, the Spencer Tiara was worn by Lady Diana just over 40 years ago, and turned heads when she stepped into St. Paul's Cathedral in the most highly anticipated Royal wedding of the past century. Its famous garland style design has a central heart-shaped motif set with diamonds flanked by continuous running scrolls, interspersed with star and trumpet-shaped flowers mounted in silver and gold. The heart-shaped piece was particularly sentimental to Lady Diana as her grandmother, Lady Cynthia Hamilton, received it as a wedding present for her 1919 marriage to “Jack”, Viscount Althorp, the future 7th Earl Spencer. Over nearly 200 years – as is often the case in jewellery of this kind – the tiara was added to and transformed until crown jeweller Garrard was commissioned in the 1930s to turn the tiara into the final article. Lady Diana was known to be fond of the Spencer Tiara, often wearing it to white-tie events, sporting the dazzling piece at least seven times between 1983 and 1992 on special occasions during royal tours and high-profile events. ALEXANDER CALDER JEWELRY 🧡It is an important representative of contemporary art with its monumental forms evoking engineering, the pioneer of kinetic art, Alexander Calder. Its features meet art lovers in the biggest galleries of the world today. We know him with his aerodynamic lines and unique sculptures. But did you know the jewelry designs? With this lesser known feature, everyone accepted him as a jewelry designer in the notion of contemporary jewelry. The jewelery industry was thrilled when his necklaces, brooches, earrings and headgear were exhibited at his first personal show in England, The Boldness of Calder. He has a striking and awaiting effect in his jeweler side. He did not have the necessary workbench and equipment like a jeweler. He said “ I did it with my own hands, and I never had wire and a plier in my pocket.” This unique technique has been described in the literature as Calderian. Can you imagine? You shape your work as you turn a long and hard metal into a spiral with your hands and then draw a repetitive line! Those who know the stage of making jewelry can estimate how difficult this technique is. Creating a spiral form from a single piece, giving sculptural forms, mediocre glass and worthless items. Calder preferred to work with silver and brass. Platinum escaped from precious metals such as gold. He searched for value in design and story, not in carat. He was never concerned with the material value of his designs. What matters to him is aesthetics. Could this approach be the cornerstone of Ethical Jewelery? He chosed to keep the “value” structure of jewel art by avoiding its ruthless competition. He did not want to compete with a jeweler who made something of valuable and luxurious materials. Cartier | The Allan Tiara (aka The ‘Lusitania’ Tiara) | c. 1909 ・・・ The Allan Tiara is arguably the most famous (or infamous) of tiaras. Sir Montagu Allan commissioned the tiara for his wife, Marguerite, in 1909. It features classic Greek key in circular diamonds topped with a row of perfect seed pearls. The center diamond is detachable. In 1915 Lady Allan and her two teenaged daughters were heading to Europe from Canada to help with the war effort when their ship, the Lusitania, was torpedoed off the coast of Ireland. The ship sank in 18 minutes and 1,198 of 2000 passengers perished. Among the fatalities were Marguerite’s daughters. Though she was severely injured, Lady Allan survived the sinking of the Lusitania. Her two maids survived the shipwreck as well. Unbelievably, one of them also managed to save Lady Allan's Cartier tiara, concealing it in her clothes throughout the ordeal. The tiara stayed in the Allan family until 2015. Credit to @sothebysjewels Edwina Mountbatten had a particular penchant for Art Deco “Tutti Frutti” style jewels, which took inspiration from Indian cut-coloured gems, and so held a special resonance for the Countess, who had been the last Vicereine of India.
