@sothebys ・・・ In this ebullient emerald-green work, Marc Chagall’s signature style comes to the fore. The Russian-born artist and his wife, Bella, travelled from New York to Mexico City in the summer of 1942, and the canvas here is filled with charming motifs inspired by the brief sojourn. At the centre of the scene, a large horse rears, flanked by a woman holding her child. Above, a man wearing a sombrero floats by carrying his guitar. The lucid colour palette immerses the figures into a dream-like world, as if bathed in the moon-lit night sky. The work will be offered in the Modern Art Evening Auction this Saturday in Hong Kong. En esta obra exuberante de color verde esmeralda, el estilo característico de Marc Chagall pasa a primer plano. El artista de origen ruso y su esposa, Bella, viajaron de Nueva York a la Ciudad de México en el verano de 1942, y el lienzo aquí está lleno de encantadores motivos inspirados en la breve estadía. I’ve lived in NYC for almost 18 years so it takes a lot to impress me. Today, I was blown away by the newly renovated galleries at @sothebys by @shohei_shigematsu of @omanewyork. The building looks like a world class art museum now except that everything is for sale! I’m so glad I wore sneakers because there was so much to see. It’s all thoughtfully laid out too. Definitely stop by before the auctions begin on May 14th. This painting is La Rue Halévy, vue du sixième étage by Gustave Caillebotte from 1878 on offer from The Levy Family Collection. Pablo Picasso’s ‘Mousquetaire à la pipe’ from 1968 is a spectacular example of a theme that defined the last years of the artist’s life. The iconography of the musketeer was indicative of Picasso's self-awareness in the years before his death – gone from his paintings were the veiled references to the artist as the victorious gladiator or centaur, with the arrogant musketeer believed to be a more appropriate avatar. @sothebys Henri Matisse's beautiful 'Danseuse assise dans un fauteuil' is a quintessential example of the artist's sensuous odalisques ❤️💐🩰 The elegant model is Italian countess Carla Avogadro, dressed in a blue tutu, reclining on an extravagant Venetian Rococo armchair, an antique find that Matisse bought on a whim and, in his own words, became “obsessed” with. These paintings from the early 1940s were the artist’s final canvases before Matisse turned his hand, and scissors, to his famous cut-outs, and harmoniously bring together all the strands of his genre paintings – the staccato still life of the vase counterbalancing the soft lines of the figure, all within a familiar interior world marked by its chequerboard floor. The work will be unveiled in the @sothebys London galleries later this month, its first public exhibition since 1949. It will then make its auction debut in our 'Rembrandt to Richter' Evening Sale on 28 July - link in @sothebys bio for the catalogue. Credit to @sothebys From an exceptional and distinguished private collection, this dazzling still life by Paul Cézanne will lead an exquisite group of four masterworks in our Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale this May in New York. Painted circa 1888-90, ‘Nature morte: pommes et poires’ is a poignant encapsulation of Cézanne’s greatest achievements and an extremely rare example of his quintessential still lifes of this caliber remaining in private hands. Such modest arrangements of apples, pears, tables, and ceramics fascinated Cézanne throughout his decades-long career and chart the progression of his artistic development.
