yes. the Shadow the Hedgehog themed wrestling match. sorry but you're getting a long answer here

this one extremely specific sonic event has eluded me and it drives me mad. here's what i know:

back in 2005 while SEGA was advertising the upcoming Shadow the Hedgehog game, they sponsored a few Pancrase Wrestling matches to promote the game. and by promote, i mean they painted Shadow onto the ring and had a mascot run around between events and hand out trophies.

the ring and concept alone is already incredible and hilarious (especially when considering the reasoning behind the collab was "shadow and the pancrase logo have similar color schemes). however, this specific event did not go that well.

despite the few sources i can find on this event, there's a clear through line: there was an injury at this event, and while that's common in wrestling, it was... a bit of a bloody one. underneath the readmore at the bottom of this post there's an image of the wrestler above (i don't know his name unfortunately) covered in a bit of blood with the shadow the hedgehog mascot behind him. it's not his blood, the other wrestler was injured.

here's my white whale: i've never found any footage of this event and there are very few photos of it. a lot of tales exist: i've heard that the injury was REALLY bad, i've heard that the crowd booed at the shadow mascot when he came into the ring, i've heard that they even interviewed the shadow mascot suit. i don't know if any of this is actually true.

there is, however, a second Pancrase/SEGA Shadow collab that has footage, which i think is a karate tournament that shadow also appeared at. i've seen the footage of it before, i can't find it again unfortunately. nothing much happens, shadow just comes onto the ring (much to the competitor's surprise) and shakes their hand.

so yeah. i wish i had more information and sources to link to but a lot of the links i had are now defunct :( if anyone has footage or any more info on either of these events. holy shit let me know. someone's gotta have a vhs recording of the shadow mascot suit running around that ring there's GOTTA be one somewhere

To cut it short because there was genuinely a whole year of me almost getting into sekai and then Not, it was because of the fucking sonic costume. I saw the game was getting an EN version but was debating getting it because I didn’t like vocaloid at the time, but I saw a promo saying they’d give out a free sonic costume for X amount of preregistrations or whatever and I was super hyperfixated on sonic at the time so I did my part. It actually took me a while to get into the game but I’ve been deep in prsk hell for almost exactly 2 years now.

As for why I got into lore, it kinda was a natural thing for me? I’ve always been into that sort of thing, even as a kid some of my main interests included DC, Star Wars (sorry for having the interests of a middle aged cishet dude) and Winx Club, all of which are kinda heavy on the lore side to varying degrees. I think going directly from Sonic -> prsk kinda helped as well. Like Sonic is lore heavy as is but I was super into that sort of thing and used to lorepost on my sideblog for fun lmao (also where my character analysis hobby originated. Ig you can blame hedgehogs for why I’m like this then lol). Like the concept of the sekai immediately caught my eye, I thought that was really cool compared to the other idol games I played, even if it took me fucking ages to read past the main story.

desire to lorepost only continues to grow so i'm going to let some things slip abt my au/fic universe just for u, fellow infiniteheads,

- shadow is absent for six months as, directly after sonic's capture, he is intercepted by infinite on his way to provide backup. they fight, and infinite kicks him right into nullspace, where he remains until a disruption of the phantom ruby's energy allows him to escape (same time as classic's arrival). he does this because he realises that killing shadow is not satisfying, not a true punishment, because dead men do not suffer. instead, he opts to isolate him, suspended in nothingness, alone, just as shadow left him.

this is also a route eggman favours, as they need him out of the equation and a regular prison will not suffice; in nullspace, there is nothing for him to manipulate. sonic is not sealed in with him as eggman has his own agenda – just as shadow is infinite's prime adversary, sonic is eggman's, and infinite has no personal beef with sonic beyond an envy of his natural ability and loathing of his attitude. confining sonic and shadow in the same location isn't ideal either. infinite's final word to shadow is "worthless".

despite the fact shadow is now dealt with, infinite remains plagued by thoughts of him, the anger doesn't fade, and it infuriates him; he's haunted, still, even having enacted revenge. the idea was to do unto shadow what was done to him, leaving him alive, alone, then paying him no mind because he isn't worth it, but the last part... isn't working.

- in regards to tails, he's still missing, but he has a purpose; driven by the guilt of being unable to help sonic, he goes in hunt of the chaos emeralds. however, his search doesn't turn up much, which is... unsettling. he travels far and wide but it's like they don't even exist, or something is blocking their signals.

the reason for this is that one of them is in nullspace with shadow – which he can't do anything with there, appearing neutralised – and the other six are contained by starline with measures to ensure they can't be detected. he's pulling his hair out over the one that's missing, because he can't present eggman with an incomplete set. eggman and infinite didn't know shadow had the emerald with him, and initially eggman sought them too, but gave up, equally confused by them being off the radar. he dismisses it, deciding the phantom ruby alone is enough.

- gun fall quickly and easily because eggman overwhelms them with sheer numbers across multiple regions, and his weaponry has grown ever more advanced. they can't keep up with such a massive, large scale attack all at once, their own forces spread too thin

This is a redraw of some art I did 3 years ago of Shadow’s “personal demon” in a sense. He calls him Hate when he doesn’t refer to him as Shadow, he’s a ghost made of Shadow’s raw Chaos Energy building up over time along with his emotions. Only Shadow can see the ghost but sometimes he appears through Shadow himself to present himself to others

It’s a voice in his head that manifests itself through all of his repressed anger, aggression, thoughts of violent tendencies towards humans even Mobians. He focuses more on power and bloodlust than morals or the emotions of those he should be close to. He also tends to like the Black Arms a lot more than Shadow does, he considers them more familial and he likes to be involved with them. So he gets mad at Shadow and torments him when Shadow kills them all, he’s also made entirely out of unstable Chaos Energy from Shadow’s raw power. He currently exists within Shadow’s head in nightmares but in this particular scenario, Shadow’s inhibitors shatter and Hate is set free as he is no longer limited within Shadow’s body due to the raw energy no longer being repressed.

well the sonic bible isn’t canon so my opinions on that bit of it are just that it’s funny and a weird funny bit of sonic history that some woman just like. wrote. and said this is how sonic is. and everyone else involved with sonic looked at her and said You’re Insane and buried it

however one of my favorite parts of that video is where he says, as a joke, “either sonic is a god or could kill god, and i do not care if there is a difference” when in canon sonic has actually killed at least 3 gods

In a previous Bumblekast (March 23rd, 2022), Flynn was made aware that the Encyclo-shit-ia Encyclo-speed-ia was full of mistakes, of course, his reaction was to remember everyone of how much research that he did not do, saying that people do mistakes, and saying most of those were spelling mistakes...

Like, common, almost everything in that description is wrong and I don't think there's a single typo in that!

You know what annoys me the most about all that?

Kyle posted this as a response to everyone saying that the two worlds being two planets instead of being two societies is a mistranslation or miscommunication... I'm don't feel knowledgeble enough to take a side in that argument, I definetly don't trust Ian Flynn, but in both Sonic X and the Movie had it being two planets, so who knows.

The point is, the Encyclo-speed-ia alone is an excellent example of how little Flynn understands the series and how much of his confidence on his knowledge comes either from ignorance or his position of "authority". Just so you know, yes, I am the Angela in the screenshots.

perhaps! i should clarify that this bit of lore is actually just a theory - a GAME THEOR--(gets shot)

it's called the hidden palace mural theory, the basics of which state that gerald robotnik was inspired by a mural found in sonic 3's hidden palace zone when creating shadow. the full mural looks like this, actually depicting super sonic defeating sonic 3's final boss (called Big Arm i think lol):

there really isn't much to support this theory other than the fact that we know gerald explored angel island (learned in sonic battle i think) and the mural likely depicts sonic's super form (which shadow looks sooorta similar to). it's a very popular fan theory which is why a lot of people think it's canon (and why i mentioned it in my geraldoom comic). in reality, there's absolutely no canonical reason as to why shadow is a hedgehog, which i think is hilarious tbh

but you're right, the implications of gerald trying to fulfill a prophecy are crazy, and that's why i love this theory! trying to create an all-powerful being with a set destiny? might be flying a little too close to the sun there gerald

Sonic Man is an NPC from Sonic 06 that you can race.

...that's kinda it. to be fair i haven't played 06 so there might be some deeper sonic man lore i'm missing, but for the most part i think he's a sonic superfan that dresses like him and runs around like him. he also does not recognize sonic the first time he sees him lol

thankfully there's a crumb more of sonic man lore in... the archie comics!! because it always comes back to the fucking archie comics

during the tournament arc (post-reboot), there's a number of silly ads that are thrown out inbetween the fights - stuff like a commercial for "Chao Boom" (aka a parody of the real Sonic Boom show that was airing at the time). one of these ads features Sonic Man and implies that he's the star of his very own tv show!

there were also plans for an arc that followed sonic and honey the cat as they filmed Sonic Man Heroes, a show featuring Sonic Man and human superhero versions of the rest of team sonic (and cream). archie sonic was cancelled before this issue came out. :(

what are your thoughts on Shadow and Metal as a duo in Rivals 2? ik you like both characters and wondered if you had thoughts on them paired together and/or how you’d want this character pairing to be further explored if they ever revisited it officially

i haven't thought much about rivals 2 in a WHILE but i love the duo of shadow and metal a lot. i have more to say about some of their moments in archie sonic because. of course i do. but i think it's really interesting that archie shadow stops to try and reason with metal because he understands how similar they are.

it' a small moment of attempted connection and reason that metal isn't given the luxury of very often. it doesn't work to stop the fight, but it does leave an small impact on metal. in sonic universe #50, metal has a second where he very briefly remembers when shadow tried to reason with him.

this also doesn't change metal's immediate actions, but the fact that he reflected on shadow's words at all is very important to me. there IS some sort of connection there, and i think if anyone had the chance of helping metal become autonomous again, it would probably be archie shadow. game shadow could try too but he isn't as good at emotional connection lol

i think i'd like to see another situation where they're forced to team up again like they were in rivals 2, i think that's a good way to get some solid character work outta those two

as a fellow Team Dark enthusiast how often do you think about Rouge’s terrifying leg strength

REALLY OFTEN basically every time i draw her lol. sometimes i think about how she's able to kick through an entire flaming log like it's literally nothing

my friend asked how many mountain lions rouge was capable of carrying so i did the math. rouge's maximum carrying capacity (that we know of) is omega's weight plus shadow's, which would be 2,713 + 77 = 2,790. the average mountain lion weighs about 150 lbs, so 2,790/150 = 18.6. so rouge the bat can carry about 19 mountain lions

Not sure how much meat this question has to it but if back in 2006 you were the one that spearheaded the shadow the hedgehog game, how would you have done it?

i'd want ShTH 2005 to keep the same core energy its final form ended up with, but tbh there's a lot i would have done differently lol. here's my 3 step plan for how i would have directed it previously/would direct any sort of reboot or remaster

1. TIMELOOP!!!!!!

i'm not the first person to come up with this idea and i won't be the last to talk about it, but the gist of this point is that ShTH's story makes WAY more sense when you treat it like a timeloop. you finished a story path and end up back in westopolis? great job, you're at the beginning of the timeloop again. it's a smart way to make this wack story a little more cohesive.

i would LOVE to further utilize the timeloop concept for this game because it could be a very simple addition to add flavor OR it be the core of the game's story and gameplay. small things like shadow going "hey wait, have i seen this before?" when he's going through westopolis for the third time can hint at the narrative, and once shadow realizes he's in a loop he's motivated to find EVERY path in search of the full truth. every new story path could be treated as a new game+ as shadow starts to consistently remember more from previous timeloops, carrying over certain weapons, abilities, and memories from his previous experiences.

one really cool idea i saw a while ago on here (edit: FOUND IT! i'm talking about this post) is someone's ShTH timeloop pitch where after a few resets, silver starts to show up and tells shadow to stop messing with the timeline. this continues, and eventually silver becomes a final boss of some of the paths. this idea has never left my mind since i saw it and i need to find the person that came up with it they mean so much to me

i have more timeloop thoughts but i will move on for now

2. simplify or rework the morality system and levels

this is my big gameplay critique - there is A Lot to do in ShTH and very little of it is consistently fun. i have grievances with the morality system i talked about a while ago, the gist of my opinion boiling down to "the system removes agency from shadow and the story doesn't fit within the morals you choose anyway." i'd either MASSIVELY rework the morality system to make it feel worthwhile or just throw the whole thing away. unfortunately i don't have many pitches for what to replace it with since i haven't played that many games with branching stories - maybe the story paths you go down are based on BIG story decisions shadow makes during boss battles or in cutscenes (?) like choosing which boss to fight, which characters to save, what moves or weapons to use, stuff like that. i just want the stuff that leads to branching stories to be more impactful and a little simpler.

this also applies to the levels, of which there are... a lot. and maybe there should be less? i think it would be smart to cut down or combine some of the levels, then really flesh out the ones that matter. and given the non-linear nature of ShTH, i think a version with levels more focused on exploration and combat would fit the game better than the linear mission-based gameplay of the original.

3. MORE GUN

listen man. they advertised this as the sonic game with guns and in my opinion i think they could've done better. i mostly just want a more fleshed out weapons system with upgrades, a little customization, better controls, etc. just put the merchant from resident evil 4 in there and have him accept rings and i would be happy

those are the big points i would personally stick to, but i do have smaller points i would consider as well, including:

make black doom seem competent

explain who the chaotix are working for and fit it into the story

no more "kill this many enemies to progress" missions. please

Hello !! I’m getting really into Shadow The Hedgehog lately & would love to know what you think are the most important non-game pieces of media (comics, shows, etc) that should be checked out by new shadow fans ? :0

(Also, I’d love to know ur opinions on best piece of shadow merchandise but that’s secondary and just for fun-)

hmmm i'd say check out Sonic X seasons 2 and 3! part of season 2 adapts Sonic Adventure 2's story (with its own variations), and i genuinely think season 3 is a great watch with a fantastic iteration of Shadow.

you could also check out a few select issues/arcs from the Archie Sonic Comics (<- guy who Literally Always Suggests Archie Sonic). Archie Shadow is a bit different from how Game Shadow is characterized, but still a welcome version of the character imo. most of my favorite Shadow stories are in the Sonic Universe companion series, here are some issues you can check out:

Archie Sonic #171: Archie Shadow's introduction and backstory is quite different from the games, this issue follows Shadow as he finally finds the piece that helps him recover his lost memory.

Sonic Universe #1-4: explores some of Shadows origins/placement in the Archie Sonic universe. diverges a lot from game canon, don't worry about it tho

Sonic Universe #21-24 (Treasure Team Tango): i literally cannot keep myself from recommending this arc every time i talk about these comics, very fun story (with a very large cast)

Sonic Universe #59-62, #67-70, #87-90 (The Eclipse Saga): follows Team Dark as they deal with a second Black Comet and the fallout from it. also heavily features Knuckles. unfortunately doesn't have a proper conclusion, Archie Sonic was cancelled before it could be finished.

and the best piece of merch will forever and always be the shadow the hedgehog cheeseburger
