Fandom Creator's Self-Rec Game!
Choose five favourites from your own creations (and tell me why, if you like!), then pass on to at least five other people. I'd love to hear what you're proudest of.
Tagged by @the-pen-pot and actually I think @anonymintea also tagged me a while back? I vaguely remember seeing that in my activity and kind of recoiling at the idea of trying to rec my own stuff. lmfao But I have time to sit down and do it now and I am being so brave. I am just going to rec Merlin fics for this post, since that's what I've been working on and thinking about for the last four years or so, and those fics are the ones that are fresh in my mind. (Honourable mention goes to my Originals series, though, because I spent so much time on that sumabitch.)
All right, five favourites...know that this is excruciating for me and feels very cringe, because I am not normal. lmao
And Down the River's Dim Expanse (Merthur, 13k)
In which Arthur is a water spirit who tries to drown Merlin. Merlin is not impressed.
(This one feels like it kind of just disappeared into the morass of words I've vomited up on the topic of BBC Merlin. I don't think it's got nearly as much attention as any of my other fics, but I'm fond of it because I love fairytales and folklore and specifically anything to do with any kind of creature that lives in the water and especially if said creature tries to drown people. I'd love to do something like this again and have several ideas for fairytales to adopt (i.e. twist completely out of shape).
The Book of Merthur (Merthur, 600k+)
'It was awkward business to ignore a man sitting the length of one knee from you, especially when he had such voluminous ears, and though Arthur made a valiant attempt at it, he had soon to abandon this in favour of grousing at Merlin for a myriad of grievous transgressions, the most pressing of which was his manner of sitting far too close, as if they were mates. This shortcoming was to become a theme when they laid down after passing round a hard cheese and some bread, Merlin in Arthur’s cloak, and Arthur in nothing at all, because his was the greater constitution; and whilst Arthur was working himself into the choicest bit of ground, with the least stones, Merlin suddenly rolled over, mummified within the cloak Arthur’s thoughtfulness had provided, and put his nose into Arthur’s neck.'
The 'yes homo' we all deserved, righting the heterosexual wrongs of canon.
(My thus far 646,363-word essay on the issues I have with canon. I'm eight chapters from the end and already feeling that post-huge-project depression even though I have several ideas for what I want to do next. I really love writing historical fiction and have incorporated that into fics before, but this fic has shown me that I really really love writing fantasy heavily inspired by history: it's the same amount of research, with the added bonus that I can do whatever the hell I want. Also, as mentioned in my first rec, I really love fairytales and folklore, and this gives me the chance to incorporate them in a way that straight up historical fiction doesn't allow. Basically, this fic has allowed me to shove my boner for Arthurian legend and medieval history down people's throats at the same time. Ain't free gay fanfiction where I can do what I like great?)
Fools by Heavenly Compulsion (Merthur, ?k)
In which Arthur is gay and besotted, Merlin is bisexual and oblivious, and they have to get their shit together through WhatsApp.
(I have no idea how many words this technically is, because it's comprised entirely of screenshots of fake social media posts. I've read a few social media fics and enjoyed them and got a whole bug up my ass wanting to try it. I thought it would be an interesting challenge because it would take away so many things that a writer can usually rely on to tell a story, and for me specifically it would completely cut me off from any kind of descriptive writing. So basically I cut off all my limbs except like one arm and decided to see how I got on with that. And it HAS been really interesting to try and shape a narrative through texts and Instagram and twitter posts and still try and convey emotions and distinct personalities with such limitations on what I can actually show. It's also a lot of fun putting the posts together, although you can definitely fall down a deep rabbit hole of trying to pick just the right photo.)
Whereat the Two Sword on the Field of Death a Deathless Love (Merthur, 131k)
In a land of myth and a time of magic, the destiny of a great kingdom rests on the shoulders of a young boy. But not quite in the way you think. 'The Once and Future King'/Merlin mashup; now with 50% more gay.
(This was the first Merlin fic I ever wrote, and an homage to one of my favourite books. It was also me trying to get the show rewrite monkey off my back and distinctly failing at that, since I went on to write one that is over 600,000 words and still not complete. It's also proof that I am 100% capable of rewriting the show in under 150k, I just chose to inflict over 600,000 words on anyone insane enough to sit down and read a 600k gay porn version of BBC Merlin.)
And Time and the World Are Ever in Flight (Merthur, 39k)
In which Arthur returns to the 21st century, learns about Google, and finally realises his dream of running away to a farm with Merlin.
(Listen, the finale damaged me, I'm still damaged, and I tried to undo it with nearly 40k of tea and baby sheep. A.K.A. the one where Arthur returns and they run a sheep farm in Ireland together and finally figure out they're gay for each other and neither of them is alone ever again.)
Tagging @aemelia (you will have to rec all of yours lmao) @kirythestitchwitch @thetourguidebarbie and anyone else who wants to do this and has multiple fics.

Fanwork creators self rec! When you get this, reply with your five favorite fics/art/podfics/etc. that you've made, then pass on to others. Let’s spread the self-love 🌼
Ohhhh let's see! I've been drawing mostly original art these days (never thought I'd be that person but here we are xD) but that makes it all the more fun to dig up some fanworks!
Tumblr media
This Skyward Sword piece! Spent hours and hours painting every little detail, and enjoyed every bit of it.
Tumblr media
This CritRole piece! I'm glad the colors turned out as dreamy as I'd pictured them.
youtube
The huge-ass Dragon Age medley I arranged and performed a couple years back! Proud of myself for actually finishing such a beast of a project.
Tumblr media
A more recent Dragon Age fan piece that was a lot of fun to make. Just finding references for the mabari alone was a blast xD
And lastly, let's add some writing to keep it varied. I don't do a lot of that, but this small moment of reassurance between two Wardens was something I really enjoyed putting into words.
With a gasp she sat up on her bed roll. Breathing erratically, it took her a moment to grasp her surroundings and distinguish reality from the blood-curdling visions slowly fading from her mind’s eye. She heard a voice, distant at first through the sound of her blood rushing loudly in her eardrums. “Oh- Maker, I… Sorry! It’s okay, it’s-” Her hands searched around in the darkness for familiar fur, but instead found skin; an arm, a chest, a face. “It’s okay, it’s just a dream. Hey, you can calm down now.” “Alistair…?” she muttered, as her eyes started to adjust to the darkness. She could make out his silhouette against the glow from the campfire. Her breathing slowly returned to normal as she remembered. She was at camp, somewhere between the Korcari Wilds and a town called Lothering. The fatal battle, Flemeth’s rescue, it all came back to her now. His voice was soft and hesitant. “I- I should… Sorry.” She only realised she was still holding on to Alistair’s arm when he got up. Instinctively she clasped the heavy fabric of his shirt, hanging on to that reassuring bit of warmth, of human contact, for just a little longer. “No!” she blurted.  Alistair froze, uncertain.“I mean… Please.” She forced herself to let go of him, feeling like a complete idiot. They had known each other for what, a week? She certainly wasn’t the type to make friends easily, and it’s not like he had chosen to travel with her; a terrible twist of fate had forced them into each other’s company, along with the surly mage.  Between Morrigan having to leave the Wilds unwillingly and Alistair dealing with the loss of his fellow Wardens there hadn’t been much room for friendly chats. And yet, as she sat there, beads of sweat on her forehead and the memory of the nightmare still fresh, the young Warden felt like the only real thing in a world turned violently upside down. “I saw you turning in your sleep and I thought…” He sat down beside her, close enough to feel his warmth in the cool night air but not so close that they touched. He glanced at her. “I mean, not that I was watching you sleep or anything. I’m not- That would be really creepy. It’s just that… I have them too.” She stared past the campfire, where she could vaguely see Morrigan’s tent in the distance. Her dog was strolling through the bushes, no doubt in search of places to mark his territory. “The nightmares, I mean,” he said. “I have them too. They can be pretty rough. It’s a Warden thing, but I guess nobody got the chance to warn you about them, so…” He tousled his hair. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have woken you.” “It’s alright,” she said, but her voice came out strange and soft. She cleared her throat and wiped a strand of hair from her face. “It’s alright,” she repeated, more firmly this time. “Thank you, Alistair.” He smiled. They sat in silence for a while, the gently crackling fire and distant sounds of forest creatures filling the air. There was so much to say, so many questions to be answered, but this wasn’t the time. Right now she just took comfort in his presence; warm, safe, near. After a while he stretched his legs. “I should let you get back to sleep, we have a long day of travel ahead of us. I’ll be over there when you… If you need me.” “Alistair?” She hated that she was about to ask him this, but she was too tired to stop herself. “Hm?” “Could you… Would you stay? In case I…” She felt like a child, asking her father to leave the bedside candle on. But Alistair caught her gaze and in that moment she knew he understood.   She slept soundly the rest of the night, listening to Alistair’s steady breathing next to her. In the nights that followed the nightmares returned often, but the Wardens quickly grew into the habit of watching over each other. Turns out after you entrust your dreams to someone, making a friend is easy.

Happy Wincest Wednesday! Everybody's getting the same ask from me this week. What's the last Wincest fic you read that you really enjoyed? Link it (and tag the author if they're on Tumblr)
This is such a lovely ask to send :) I'm answering well and truly late so the timing from when you sent this to me vs others will be off, but that's not always a bad thing.
I'm also going to cheat and rec a few here.
First gonna rec Darling by @applecrumbledore because it came across my dash last night and I reread it (okay just re-skimmed because it was almost midnight, but it's so good I still had to reread at least some of it).
I'm gonna say this rec doesn't count for a Wincest Wednesday ask because it's technically not wincest, is even tagged "not wincest", but despite that I'd honestly label it among my favorite wincest fics. Wincest pervades and informs this story in a similar way to how it pervades and informs canon, which is part of why I can't get enough. It pushes past the plausible deniability of canon when Dean is on his knees calling Sam's name while getting railed (one of the hottest scenes in a Supernatural fic that I've read for the way that Ron writes Dean's headspace with the mingle of pleasure and shame and embarrassment and desire and then the roiling horror and release of this truth slipping past his lips - loudly), but even there it feels true to canon and believable in how everything Dean does -- all that which matters anyway -- comes back to Sam.
(And if may, though Ron may not have intended this, I wonder to what extent that is some unreliable narration on behalf of Dean, some retroactive reworking of his own memories and story and world to make his life more and more about Sam, about this bond between them, to make even the times and the things that weren't always about Sam now about him in hindsight, as their enmeshed codependency tightens vicelike around them more as the years roll over them. Here in purgatory he must cling even harder to that story and vision that he's crafted for himself, something to hold on to. That something is always Sam.)
Sam is ever-present even in his absence, and when he becomes present, the glimpses we get of his jealousy and entitlement and fury are all so in character and heated, giving a charged intensity to an otherwise aching undercurrent. Even Cas is standout here. So many times he's characterized as already Knowing, but here he reminds me of his earlier canon characterization, the version of Cas we know as a bitter soldier, and it fits so well in the context of who and what Dean becomes in purgatory, and Cas's own headspace during that time.
But okay, that's my "not actually wincest" Wincest Wednesday rec.
I'm also gonna rec three works from Val_Creative, as they're the most recent works I've bookmarked. Val has works about the early seasons, typically writing short pieces, and I'm especially drawn to their episode-related works. These snippets all seem to help to unpeel the onion that is SamandDean, and each of these has a different tone to it:
Satisfaction (set during 1x06 Skin, because I can never get enough Skin fic)
Gonna Make You (set during 4x14 Sex and Violence, a piece that informed how I was thinking of Sam and Dean's history when I wrote Architecture of Choice)
Do Anything For You (coda to 3x07 Fresh Blood, inducing some thoughts about the injuries Sam would have after the events of that episode, and acting as an early work in the vein of Dean washing Sam, a longstanding favorite trope)

Friends call me Snow Miser by Reindeerlady
Words: 15,914
Summary: Loki is sent to live with the Avengers under the careful watch of Thor, only a few weeks after the New York attack. They dread it at first, but come to realize that Loki is not as he seems. Understanding the Storm by Lizardbeth  -- WIP
Words: 230,202  @lizardbeths

Monstrous Purpose by Duce_Gemini  -- WIP
Words: 78,100
Summary: "What a prison I will make of you." Caught in the machinations of a powerful being that is entirely too interested in his "destiny", Loki is cast to Earth and stripped of his power, his magic, and even his voice. Adopted by one of the pitiful ants, a street child named Book, Loki struggles to adjust to his new "prison" while trying to uncover exactly who this power is that has banished him and why it is so interested in the fate he glimpsed while falling in the void between worlds. And without his powers, it is only a matter of time before either his not-brother and his self-righteous friends discover him....or the Chitauri do. (Post Avengers/ Pre-TDW)
Sanctuary by charlottelennox -- WIP
Words: 100,432  @iamanartichoke
Summary:  He could tolerate the physical pain; if it had just been that, perhaps he would have fared better. But the mental torture broke him. Illusions, deceits, his own free will turned against him. His deepest fears became realities; his darkest secrets taunted him. By the end, Loki barely knew the difference between what was real and what was imagined, which thoughts were his own and which were placed there for him.
Perhaps, he never would. There was a restless anxiety entombed into his bones now and it never ceased. His mind and his body had been taken from him; the prince who’d fallen from the bridge died an inglorious death.
It left for many restless nights.
WIP. Post-Ragnarok, the Asgardian refugees have to decide what to do next. Their ultimate destination is Earth, but along the way, their need for fuel and supplies diverts leads them to a furlough on a new planet, and they must face the challenges therein. 100% Loki's POV.

LONG FIC REC LIST PART 2
I know some of you are stuck inside due to be quarantined right now, and I really hope each and every one of you are doing alright. Please stay inside if you can and be safe!
To help pass the time, here’s a continuation of one of our older lists (be sure to also check out part 1 for more recs). During hard times such as this, we often turn to different forms of art for entertainment and to help us cope. BE SURE TO LET THESE WONDERFUL AUTHORS KNOW THEY ARE APPRECIATED!
This list is organized by word count. Most of the fics listed below are complete but some are not. For example if the word count is encompassed by two asterisks it means the fic is not complete and is subject to change, but the word count is correct as of the day this list was posted.
ENJOY LOVELIES!!
The Guardian by Emily_F6 @justme–emily (234k+)
Guardian: a person who guards, protects, or preserves. When a terrible accident claims the life of May Parker, Tony Stark steps up as Peter’s guaridan. But it’s not just a traumatized super-teen he’ll have to worry about when he recieves a transmission from Thor.
If They Knew All About You by MsHermia (*224k+*)
Tony Stark had lost his son when he was only 2 years old, stolen away in broad daylight with nobody the wiser of what exactly happened. Years later, Tony has just made it through the disaster with Ultron. He is trying to keep himself and the team together but relationships are strained and tempers are running high. Then a random turn of events leads to his path crossing with that of a particular vigilante. They are strangers to each other, or so they think.Peter Parker is on top of the world. After a few shitty years, losing his parents and then losing his Uncle, things are finally looking up. Sure he lives in a crappy little apartment with his Aunt but he might have just found his mission in life.——This is an AU story obvious by some of the tags. I’m starting out a few weeks after Age of Ultron took place. Civil War will be a thing. Other than that I’m not too concerned about sticking to every canon detail and storyline.
The Third Option by Uncertainty_Principle (220k+)
Homecoming A/U. Ben and May divorced before Peter’s parents died, so when Ben is murdered Peter goes into foster care. It takes just a tiny taste of superpowers for Peter to decide he doesn’t want to put up with his horrible foster father anymore—the streets are infinitely more appealing. All he wants is to be Spider-Man anyway. So he leaves.Simple.Simple, that is, until Iron Man needs Spider-Man’s help. Peter isn’t about to turn down an opportunity to fight alongside Tony Freaking Stark, but he also isn’t going to let his hero know that his recruit is a fifteen-year-old homeless dropout. So they strike a deal. Peter will help Tony. In return, the mask stays on.And that’s when things get complicated.
Lights To Guide You Home (series) by JolinarJackson @jolinarjackson  (185k+)
Tony becomes Peter’s guardian after May dies unexpectedly and over the course of a year, they learn to become a family.
 hydra’s not a home (series) by tempestaurora @tempestaurora (139k+)
At 6 years old, the son of Tony and Pepper Stark, Peter, is kidnapped, never to be seen again. Or, so they thought. Ten years later, while raiding a HYDRA base, the Avengers come across a new, enhanced individual, working for the enemy: in black spandex, with a tendency to stick to walls and shoot webs from his wrists, the Black Spider is a pain in the ass in more ways than one.
built from scraps by peterstank @peter-stank (138k+)
“Everybody needs someone. That’s what you said, right?” Pepper meets his eyes and he’s struck by the way she’s almost pleading. “We both lost. We can help each other.”Her hand, palm up and open, stretches into the space between them.Peter hesitates. Then he takes it.or: the one where tony was dusted instead of peter, so he and pepper try to figure out the whole ‘family’ thing together.(oh, and it turns out that the man who died in peter’s arms on an alien planet is his biological father. who knew, right?)
rescue me from the waves (series) by homebuilding @marveal (*125k+*)
“Richard Parker was studying Cross-Species Genetics, but struggled with the ethics of it, because it required he use human DNA, which no ethics board would agree with. So he used his own. His work was successful based off of his own DNA, and every human has a unique DNA,” Bruce explains. “So, naturally, when HYDRA wanted his research, they knew they would never get his support, so they took the next best thing they could to his own DNA. His son.“Or, Tony finds a tortured and experimented-on Peter Parker in a HYDRA base and decides to help him because who else will?
more peril in thine eye by iron_spider @iron–spider (119k+)
Tony sits in relative darkness, the TV on mute, Friday running searches like she has been every day for the past month. A month, since Quentin Beck’s grand plan crumpled underneath him on that bridge. A month, since a flash of light was able to distract Peter just as he was about to bring Beck down. A month, since Beck snatched him, since both of them disappeared. An entire. Month.I’ll keep you updated. I promise.I love you, kid. Rhodey’s on his way, alright? He’s coming. He’s gonna go as fast as he can.I love you too. I’ll be okay. I promise. I can do this. The last thing Tony heard Peter say. Rhodey, Happy and Fury traversed the London landscape immediately afterwards. They found the glasses, but not Spider-Man. There was footage enough to incriminate Beck for what he was, but somehow, nobody was able to get a shot of when he grabbed Peter. Peter was knocking him around, looked like he was getting the upper hand, and then that flash of light. Gone. Gone.
I Never Knew I Was Broken by GotMyInkPen @gotmyinkpen (*111k+*)
Peter Parker has been living in HYDRA ever since his parents died at age four. All he can remember are the lesson’s HYDRA taught him and a series of words that strike fear into his heart. The only thing driving him forward are the memories of meeting his hero The Winter Soldier when he was seven and the goal to one day be as great an assassin as him.At age sixteen Peter finds himself tangled in the lives of the Avengers and can’t help but wonder if there’s more to life than what he’s been told.Tony wants to help him, no matter what.
Reviving Peter Parker by YellowDistress @yellowdistress (100k+)
Spider-Man was murdered five years ago, on a beach, at the hands of Adrian Toomes. Peter Parker never came home.Spider-Man was murdered five years ago. Today Peter Parker took his first breath.
 It’s a Secret to Everybody by StarPrince_Punk @starprincepunk (97k+)
“I have kids,“ Clint said. “I know dad behavior when I see it.”Tony blinked multiple consecutive times, processing the statement. “Excuse me?”“Tony,” Steve said now, “how long have you had a son? And how come we’ve never known about him?”“Yeah,” Clint spoke again, “I thought I was the only one with a secret family. Turns out you’ve had one longer than me!”——-Peter gets to spend all summer living in Avengers Tower with Tony. When the Rogue Avengers get pardoned and come back to live at the Tower too, they’re confused as to who Peter is. However, once they see how Tony acts around Peter, that confusion goes away, as they know for certain who Peter must be - Tony’s secret son.Tony and Peter decide to make the most of the situation, and play along. They hope they can keep up the act all summer. But they soon learn that they barely have to act at all.
Peter and the Jailbirds by beautifullights @beautifullights1 (86k+)
NOW COMPLETE “If you did play chess,” Ross said, “you’d remember that a pawn can become a queen. The most powerful piece on the board, Parker, remember that? But—” Ross smiled— “only if it obeys.”He adjusted his tie, stood, and looked down at Peter. “I’ll ask you again,” he said. “Eventually. You may feel differently after you’ve been living in a six-by-six cube without sunlight or fresh air for a few years.” “What pawns do,” Peter said, voice shaking slightly, “is sacrifice themselves for the greater good. I have no regrets.”He had a lot of regrets.Like, a lot. A crapton. A shitload. An overloaded dumpsterful.“When I visit you on the Raft,” Ross said, “you’ll be old enough to grow a beard.” The cell door clicked shut behind him. [Rated mature for graphic violence.]
Hardest Lessons (Softest Results) (series) by mainstreamelectricalparade @riseuplikeglitterandgold (*76k+*)
The MCU if Peter was Tony’s biological child.
In the Home by aloneintherain (68k+)
The Avengers have been infected, turned violent and aggressive against their will. And Peter, the only one unaffected, is trapped inside the Tower with six feral teammates.“Natasha,” Peter says cautiously, “what happened here? Steve attacked me, and if there was ever a sign that something was wrong, it’s having the embodiment of Truth, Justice, and the American Way throw you across the room—”Natasha comes closer, her stride controlled. Nothing necessarily out of the ordinary, but there’s something in her face, in her eyes—Natasha lunges across the space, and slams into Peter, hard.
From Fraud to Father by TonyStarkissist @tonystarkissist (67k+)
“Tony,” she placated, “all you have to do is read a couple children’s books to them and answer a few of their questions. You’ll be fine.” “Will you come with me? You’re so good with kids,” he pleaded as she finished up with his collar and awkwardly patted the lapels of his suit down, forcing a smile onto her face when she looked up at him.“No. I’ve got a lot of work to do. Phil’s going with you, though, and so is Happy. You shouldn’t have a problem. They’ll make sure you don’t do anything stupid.”Theres a long pause before Tony finally voices his true concern.“But what if one of them sneezes on me?”
Archetype by Bean_reads_fanfic @the-reverse-mermaid (57k+)
Tony knows something is up when the research of ex-Hydra agents gets recycled in an underground Oscorp lab… what he doesn’t expect is the boy in a hospital gown sticking to the ceiling; or, how said boy proceeds to imprint on him like a baby duckling (a poor decision on his part, really). Did he mention he wasn’t intending on bringing home a kid that day?
Taking Leaps (and the falls that come with them) by Kamomile_Tea (*45k+*)
All across New York City the boroughs are crying out with one voice, asking a question everyone wants the answer to.Where is Spiderman? But no one is asking about Peter Parker. So, he sits alone. Contemplating how his life could have gone so downhill. Grief and nausea well up in his chest and the boy quickly shoves it back down. A shiver courses through him as the cold November air seeps into the building and through his thin clothing. And on the back of his navy blue overshirt, in blocky, white letters, reads the words:CROSSROADS JUVENILE CENTERBROOKLYN NYINMATE 3042 ========== The world seems content with ignoring this young teen. That is, until Tony Stark shows up and asks him if he wants to go to Germany.
Runaway by Spectra @iridescent-spectra  (42k+)
Tony and his adopted son Peter get into a huge spat over his late night spiderman escapades, in which case Peter takes the term ‘Not while you’re under my roof’ way too seriously. After all, how hard could it be to run away from a multi billion dollar genius?Chaos ensues as the whole city becomes a metaphorical chessboard for the two equally stubborn masterminds.

Hi do you have any good book recs? I'm particularly in an enemies to lovers romance mood but I'd appreciate any recs you have. Thanks(:
Oh so so many, nonnie. This list got loooong.
Crown Duel - In all truthfulness I don’t remember a ton about this one but I love it enough that it’s been on my shelf since I was a teenager. Mostly what I remember is the political intrigue side of things. Our main characters are on opposite sides of the political aisle (of this magical kingdom) but find themselves working towards the same goals. And I don’t promise anything but I very vaguely remember some hiding of identity and life saving going on early into things.
Mara, Daughter of the Nile - This one’s for kids so it’s an easy read but it is SO GOOD. Mara is a slave who’s sent to be a spy in Egypt’s royal house. Only along the way there she winds up forced to spy for the other side. One of her two contacts is Sheftu, a noble fiercely devoted to seeing his king on the throne. There are plenty of sparks between the two of them and much drama not only from Mara’s (unavoidable) duplicity but because of all the politics going on.
Stolen Songbird - A young woman is sold to the trolls as a bride who will supposedly break the curse plaguing them just by marrying their prince. Only not so much - and now they’re stuck with her. There is much political drama (I do not know why all these books have political stuff going on) and much drama between our main couple, who do NOT want to be together and want even less to be bound by a magical spell that, if it’s not inspired by soulmate fic, I would be shocked. (Fair warning: I have not read the entire trilogy, just this first book, so I can’t necessarily recommend the whole thing but this one was really good.)
Angelfall - I typically stay far away from this particular subgenre of the whole supernatural creature romance genre, but this got great reviews when it came out and definitely deserved them. Penryn is trying to find her little sister in the middle of the apocalypse and her only help is a wingless angel who hates her as much as she hates him. It’s good stuff and worth the read even if the trilogy loses its spark over time. (#2 was good but I never even bothered to read 3, the reviews were terrible.)
North and South - Yeah, that North and South. It’s old and it’s long (so … so so long) but it’s like Pride and Prejudice all grown up. Margaret is in no way sheltered but when she’s thrown into the very different social structures of an industrial town, she discovers the world is even greyer than she thought. It would be easy to side with the struggling working class but Gaskell doesn’t allow the reader that luxury, showing that management’s struggles and compromises are just as real and difficult as those of the people their decisions most affect. Oh, and Margaret and the mill owner have a relationship so full of ust and mutual antagonism/pining that I probably should’ve put this at the top of the list.
But I do love P&P, don’t get me wrong, and if you’re looking for more of that, I highly recommend the William Darcy, Gentleman series. It’s P&P from Darcy’s perspective and is truly excellent.
Redeeming Love - This one’s a Christian romance but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. Angel’s a prostitute during the gold rush, looking for a new life in the wilds of California, far from the man who made her who she is. Hosea is a farmer who literally hears God telling him to marry the beautiful prostitute he sees while visiting town. (Yes, this is a retelling of the biblical book of Hosea but Hosea is perfectly aware that it’s happening.) It’s not simple and it’s not pretty but there’s a reason it’s on basically every Christian book list.
A Matter of Class - This one’s kind of cheating but I promise it’s worth it. Our future lovebirds are on opposite sides of a social divide and a family feud, but when Annabelle tries to run off with the groom (not her groom, the groom with the horses; oh the shame), Reginald’s father sees his chance to lift the family’s social standing a little and give his spendthrift son a dose of responsibility. Thus two feuding fathers proceed to drag their unwilling children to the altar. Yes, it’s a traditional romance novel but it’s not porny.
Entreat Me - I’m currently reading this one. It’s a batb retelling with plenty of changes to make it fresh and interesting. The beast is a warlord cursed by his dying, vicious wife and Louvaen is a young widow demanding to stay in his castle to protect her sister’s virtue. Speaking of virtue, where the last book was very restrained, this one is not. There is much sex.
This list is getting ridiculous so here are a few enemies-to-lovers (or lovers-who-might-be-are-enemies)* romance novels, if that’s your thing:
Proof by Seduction
One Night of Passion
After Midnight
Unveiled
And some books that either aren’t romances or don’t have that enemies tension to them but which I must recommend:
Keturah and Lord Death
The Most Important Thing Happening
Till We Have Faces
If We Survive
Gallagher Girls
Landover series
Song in the Silence
Hopefully something here strikes your fancy, nonnie, and thanks for the ask!
edit: And please tell me if you do read any of them! That goes for anyone, not just this particular anon. I wanna know if anyone enjoys them.
