Hey I wrote something else. That's three weeks in a row posting something to ao3, good for me.
Let Me Have My Vengeance (It's the Only Salve that Saves)
To summon the High King of the Dead, you must make a sacrifice of heroes blood. Unfortunately, what counts as a hero is entirely up to the Ghost King himself, requiring enterprising cultists to capture multiple heroes and test out all of them. The most controversial of these heroes is the Red Hood, Avenger and Guardian of Crime Alley.
The first summoning failed.
So did the second. And the third. The cultists slowly worked their way down the line of imprisoned heroes as they searched for the perfect sacrifice for the King of the Dead. They took turns grabbing a hero by the arm, slicing just above the wrist so the blood dripped onto the eerie green fractal on the floor while the others maintained the circle, waiting to see if this was the sacrifice that would summon the High King.
The heroes were silent, several of them gagged, as the cultists worked their way through one of the Arrows, a Lantern, and two Flashes before reaching the bat family. Luckily, they hadn't caught a Super; gods summoned by Kryptonian blood tended to be able to bring more of their power into the mortal plane. Less luckily, the Supers wouldn't be able to rescue the rest of them despite being free. The cultists had laid down anti-detection magic that blocked super hearing; it was doubtful Superman or any of his family had even realized something was wrong.
The Red Hood growled when they reached him at the end of the line, a rumbling snarl that would set off the hindbrain instincts of anyone sane. He was restrained just as tightly as the others, however, bound in magic and rope, so there was nothing to stop the cultist from dragging him forward. They hesitated a bit. The ritual called for the blood of a hero, and there was a fair amount of disagreement over whether the former crime lord counted. One cultist with a thick crime alley accent assured the others he was heroic enough, the woman barely even flinching at the Hood's accusing look.
He was placed further from the rest, so a second cultist had to come help drag him to the ritual. They dumped him at the edge of the circle, and the first swiftly drew the unnaturally sharp ceremonial knife over his arm. The blood splattered down onto the ritual, slowly being absorbed by the runes, same as the previous attempts, and no change seemed to be forthcoming. The Red Hood was quickly dragged back into place, a cadre of cultists already getting together to discuss finding better sacrifices.
A cultist began approaching the heroes, ready to finish things now that they had no more need of them, and the room ş̵̟̥̬͎̗̝̲͇̪͋̄̏͑̊̅̈̔ ̷̛̪̘̩͍͍̣͙̖̃̑͠ḩ̷̹̪̝̰̗̲̹͚͐́̒̑ ̵̨̛̺̦̆̾͒͌͆̑̚̚ȏ̵̧͇̯̱͌͒̑̏͌̐͝͝ͅ ̸̥̫͙͂̿͛͘ọ̷͖͑̑̊ ̴̘̲͗͋k̷̞͍̙̜̼̒̿͑̓͐̚͜͝͝ͅ.
Cultists screamed, glass broke as something fell, and the heroes launched into action as the magic that held them flickered. Everything froze again though as a fissure opened in the middle of the runes and a strange, inhuman hand grasped the edges from below.
The creature that pulled itself out was difficult to describe. It was the night, the beautiful vastness of the stars, the knowledge that Earth was only a speck of a speck of a speck in the cosmos, that there were billions of years before humanity and there would be billions of years after, all wrapped up into a shape that started human before stretching into endless snake-like coils. It had a crown like the auroras, and sharp claws that gleamed like ice shed in the wake of a speeding comet. Its eyes were bright-burning glimpses of eternity: all the truth of the living and dead there to see if you dared to look.
It was a horrifying, awe-inspiring sight, and, as the creature freed itself from the chasm in the ground, it turned to look directly at the Red Hood.
"Ẏ̶̨̛̪͕̘̰̝̰̩̝̼͌͊̋̌͌͘o̵͇͖͕̔̒́̾̑̔͝ų̷̬̜̦͔̙͎͔̆̈͘ ̵̣̽͂w̸̡̠͇̿̄͗̃͋̔͂͑̄̀e̴̺̯͚̿̈́͗̈̑͂͠ŕ̶̙̜̔̽̃̿͆͆̌͊e̴̫̱͓͌̄̌̌̑͝͠ ̸̢̘̞̬̼̞̗̤̔̀͛͊̇͌t̷̨̗̲͉̰̪̼̺̞̣͊̈́́͆̆̀̃h̶̳̫̲̹͔̒͛̒͗̆̚͝͝e̴̼̥̹̬͆́͋̑̅̏̌̀̀͋̀ ̵̟͕͓͔̱̝̀͂̓̊̒̈́̈́̈͗͝͝o̴͎̲͗̎͒̚ͅň̵̢̳͙̹̫̬̺̫͇̬̬͂ę̴̘͍̯̤̹͇͋̅̆ ̴̨̹̖̖̓͝t̴̨̲̺͔̫̪̥̰̠͈̯͋ỏ̴̲̮̭̌̍͋̃̈́̃̏͆͒̕ ̶̧̧̥͔̗̖͈͍͇͌ͅs̸̛̩͚͕̒̈́u̴̧̫̼͖͔̳̙̤̞͛̏̓̅̂͒͌̊̄m̷̤͆̋̈̓̿̈m̷̤̮̃̄́̀̏͐͛̃͠o̵̜͌̏̌̌̒̀̒̚͘͝ṋ̴̟̬̔̾́̊̿͐̅͘͘͠͠ ̴̛̫̺̯͊̃͒̎̾̏͆̚͠m̴̨̫͐͒̎ë̷͍̬͓̣̖̻̪̬́̆͑̾͘,̵̭͇̩̬̖̩̠̖̐ͅ ̸̬͕͎͛ĝ̸͈̹̦̤͚̜̿̏̈̃̑͜͝u̸̪̤̺̬̰̜̫̲̣̩̇͋͐̕͝ą̴̡̝͙̯͙̑̇͒̊͆̽̉́͊r̶͙͕͇͇͔̈́̽͆̑̿̄d̵̦͚͚̦̮̤̗̹̅͋͌͘̕͝į̷̱̘͇̜̥̽͊͜a̴̱͙̋̏̾̃̽͜͝ń̸͈̥͓̩̙̮͙̳̠͋̄̍̿̒̕͝?̴̛͔̬͈͌̔͋̆͝"
"Uh…," his face was invisible behind the mask, but one could almost see the wheels turning in the Red Hood's head. "I guess?"
"Y̸͚͆̈́o̷͍̊u̸̳͌ ̷̌̓ͅg̷̢̃ũ̷͜ę̴̐̌s̸̰̊s̴̖͆̽ ̶͙̳̈́́y̷̳͛͗ơ̵ͅṳ̵͐͋ ̴̧̾j̷͈̻̓ṳ̷̏̚s̸̹̺͐t̸̬͛͝ ̵̧̏̏s̵͎̘̍̇ǘ̷̖̗̋m̷͉͚͝͝m̶̩͝o̵͎̔n̸̖͑̿e̵̪̬̽̅d̶͖̯̊͋ ̷̓̓ͅț̸̛̎ĥ̷͙ę̵͎̉ ̶̡̜̓̑H̵̢̠̒̿ỉ̶͎̯g̷͕͕͆ḩ̸̟̏ ̷͚̇K̸̬̣̅̊ḭ̸̅̓n̵̼̽g̸̦̥̎͠ ̴̟̮̏̍ò̶͎̥f̶̳͂ ̸̢͊͘t̵̼̋ȟ̴͍̈́e̸̩̓ ̶̢͊͝I̴̳̽n̸̮͐f̴̠͠i̴̥͊n̶̯̬̓̇i̵͖͌t̴̼͂́ȩ̴̿͊ ̸̡̭͊̓R̶̞̦̈́ē̶̢͝a̷̜̔͝l̵̮͇͝m̶͚̹̅͘s̷͕̾ ̸͙̖̈́ẅ̶̢̼́͝ḭ̶̰͂t̸̠̰͂h̷̖̊̈́ ̵͚̤̅͛ą̷̏̍ ̵̰͔̓s̴̡̗̋̔a̶̰̓̅c̶͎̺̀̊r̶̬̊̊ỉ̶̹f̷̲̻̅͝i̶̪̎c̸̼̈̕ḙ̶̱̂̂ ̶̮͑o̶̭͌f̷͕͐̀ ̶͍͔́b̷̘̒̕ͅl̶̅ͅȏ̴͖̻o̷̯͑̔d̴̮̩́́?̵̪̟̄͠"
The being sounded startlingly sarcastic, which was a new one in Jason's admittedly limited experience with eldritch abominations. Though, in that brief moment of casualness, he had gotten a glimpse past the horror to an aura of kindness. Jason could work with that.
"It was kind of an accident?"
The being blinked before looking around for the first time. "S̵̗̱̈́̒h̴͇̯̓͗ī̷͈͖͛t̷͇̓̋. I was hoping requiring the blood of a hero would mean I would only be called for emergencies, not petty villainy." The being casually reached out and sent a burst of ć̸̲̞̊̿ȍ̷͇͈̬́̚͜s̷̲̍̈́͛͝m̷̛̝̮͙̗̰o̴͓̭̣͌͐̎̄́͘͝s̴̭͌̓̐͝͠-̸̦̘͙͚̼͑͐ḵ̵̨̩̖̂̾͘i̷̢͍̱̜͇͙̥͋̚n̷̲̙̝͓̟͗̂̍̇̽ģ̸͛̔̂̐͋̄́-̶̧̫̥͈̫̰̒̎̓̐́k̵̞̹̥͒̿̇̋̊ņ̸̦͍̪͒̿̋̊͆̒̾e̶̜͊̈ẻ̵̹́̿̒̈̚l̴̨̙̳͔̝͚͒-̴͎̭̻̦̂t̴͕̜̙̫̹̣͂̒͘͝ǫ̵̝͉̋͑̈͂̀-̶̧͍̘̙͕́͜ṃ̷̖̥̘̦͐̅e̵̳̥͇̓̔̎̍̄͝ power at the cultists, who slammed to their knees and fell silent.
Jason took a moment to restart his brain. Seeing an eldritch god beyond mortal ken curse like a teenager admittedly made him want to bash his head against a wall, but he could hear Nightwing making a noise like a leaking teakettle behind him, and he refused to handle this worse than Dickface. "Maybe you should include a clause that it has to be a willing sacrifice? Or one that requires good intentions? How are you defining 'hero' anyway?" Yup. Nailed it. English pedantry for the win.
"I considered both; willing tends to get iffy if the sacrifice is under duress at all, which most would be considering the kind of situations that lead someone to summon m̴̦̭͙̮̣͆̈̉̀͛̈́e̷̬̦̤̻̬͎̓͑͂̎͐͝, and good intentions clauses are too black and white for my tastes." The creature turned back to him from where it was staring exhaustedly at the cultists. "Heroes are those who help others at the cost of themselves. How else would you define it?"
Jason took a moment to sort through that. Did that mean the creature thought he helped others? Vindication. It was almost too good to be—
"You think the Red Hood helps others? By what goddamn metric?" And there was the catch. Green Arrow was a jerk when Jason was Robin, and he'd only gotten worse over the years.
The King froze for a moment, before he seemed to g̸̩͊l̶̟̭͚̲̹͚͐͂i̷̧̳̰̺̻͇̐͗́̈̂̒ẗ̷̘̤̳̝̯̝̞́́̆c̷̡͖̩͒̾̀͌͑͑̇h̴̦̻͚͓́͜, twisting to face the Arrow. Its voice was noticeably colder as it spoke, and several heroes paled. "Why wouldn't he be? I know the name of the avenger who lives in Gotham. I didn't come on ḁ̷͉̖̀c̶̥͋͜c̶̼̩͖̿̍̑̇͊̚i̵̩͒̓͂ḑ̴̦͚͙̱̄̀͜͝e̴͚̜̟̭͂̌͘͝n̶̰͒́̉̅ť̷̗̠̝̣̪̐̒̀͒̍."
"Avenger?" Jason hadn't heard that word applied to him before. For most people, it has too many heroic implications because of the marvel comics to consider applying it to him. But if he apparently was a hero, not just a vigilante, by the standards of— he thought the being said they were from the Infinite Realms? Some kind of afterlife maybe?— if he was a hero by the standards of the Infinite Realms then…
The being's voice was frigid, and there was an underlying sound like the booming crack of a glacier. The ghost turned back to Jason again. "Six months ago you killed a rapist, freeing two of my subjects from their fear and preventing any more living from joining them. Eight months before that, a serial killer, avenging seven. Two months before that you eliminated a human trafficking group, freeing the children of another one of my subjects. She wept for three days and sang eternal blessings to your house." As he spoke the being seemed to fold in on itself, becoming more and more human until a child, barely a teenager, stood before him, a crown too big for his head sitting on his shoulders instead and large, tired eyes in his face. "A month and a half before that, you killed Jonah Stevenson, freeing two of my friends, Kitty and Johnny."
Jason sat there wide-eyed. He didn't— he didn't do what he did expecting recognition but… He asked a quiet clarifying question about the terminology the boy-king used. "You said I freed them?"
The kid shrugged. "You came back s̷̲̰̙̜̠̒͒̄c̵̢̺̱͎̪̍̄͒̓̓̕͠ȑ̴̝͋e̴̙̠̥̪̗̐̃̇̀̚ȁ̸̻̝̲̲̹͖̽̋̈́̄͜m̸̗̒́͒͌͝ǐ̵̼͚̩̫͕̌͛͆ͅn̴̗̈͑͠ͅg̷̙̈́̍́͌̾̈͊, right? That's what the rumors say. You know the value of knowing the person who hurt you can't harm you or anyone else ever again."
One of his brothers spoke up skeptically, probably as a distraction while the rest of the family tried to get free and undo the summoning. "How would killing someone prevent them from harming someone in the afterlife?"
The kid raised an eyebrow, casting a glance over at the heroes, who froze. "There isn't only one afterlife. People like that get dragged straight to judgment, or sent on to the reincarnation cycle without their memories." The being's gaze turned amused. "Don't be so afraid. I'll be going in a minute."
The ghost kid turned and beamed at Jason, the first expression he'd seen the teenager make that wasn't tired, terrifying, or vaguely assholish. "Feel free to call me up if you need something. I owe you a lot of favors for everything you've done for my people." He moved with unnatural grace through the air, slipping back through the portal just before the ritual seemingly lost power, leaving behind a dozen cultists that had fallen unconscious at some point and a group of heroes that were remarkably drained for having barely done anything.
Jason slumped to the ground even as his fingers unraveled the last of his restraints. That was… something. Something good, he thought; it mattered to have someone tell him they appreciated what he was doing as much as most people didn't. He felt like he needed to catch his breath after all the emotions he'd gone through. He definitely needed to pull his energy back up considering he was going to have to spend the next few hours doing his favorite thing: dealing with his family.

Okay but hear me out!
Dead On Main Revolutionary Ghost Utena AU:
Canonically, Jason focuses his rage to summon the All Blade
Ghost Prince Danny would have the Ring of Rage, but not the Crown of Fire yet
I hypothesize to you that the two are connected, and not only that, but that wearing the ring allows one to draw the All Blade out of the other. Like, literally.
Because of this, summoning the All Blade of their own accord is the mark of a ghost powerful enough to be the ghost king's betrothed, and whatever other ghosts were in the running are pushed back in line as the All Blade wielder is now at the front.
It is part of ancient ceremony that predates Pariah as Ghost King and dates all the way back to the first Royal of the infinite realms, King Lazarus.
The connection itself is no more than a pull towards each other, a fascination at most to make an easier base to build a genuine and in this case, human connection.
To become actually engaged Jason would have to willingly appear before the Ghost Prince and allow him to draw the All Blade out of him, something he is not very excited for and might actually have other lasting impact besides the engagement.
Y'see Jason isn't a halfa the way Danny is, he came back twice in a short amount of time between those two instances, and while the second time was Lazarus induced, no one really knows how he woke up in his grave and broke himself out. There are theories but Clockwork was watching and even he doesn't seem to know for sure, so it's really anyone's guess.
So what the engagement ceremony could do, potentially, is either solidify his halfa status by sheer amount of ectoplasm transfered by the act, or alternatively it could just kill him on the spot and then he'd probably become a full ghost.
Now, neither of these sound great to Jason, but he also doesn't like that a bunch of ghosts have been trying to fight him for their Prince's hand in marriage, something they can only do while the Prince is still not engaged to anyone.
Meanwhile, Danny doesn't appreciate that as soon as he came of age all these marriage proposals started being thrown at him, he's known some of these ghosts since he was a teenager so that's really weird for one, and he gets that most of them are just trying to secure their happiness and not to mention their future safety as the mortal world seems to be moving on with the anti ecto act, which had lead many a specter to retreat back to the realms, causing a lot of unrest as the realms become more crowded and politically tense between factions who have not needed to interact for a while now.
It would seem the Amity portal and even Danny fighting the ghosts and sending them back through it was the break many of the realms' denizens desperately needed, but now with that option no longer being safe, as even their king can't protect them from the GIW when they're gaining so much support from governments across the world, tensions are running high in the realms and it seems that it's every ghost for themselves.
Danny doesn't really resent any of the ghosts for doing what they feel they must to make sure they aren't destroyed in what is shaping out to be a realms wide war at this point, even as he works overtime with his council to prevent that from happening, and he understands they obviously don't expect any actual marital kind of relationship from him, which is at least a little reassuring even if the idea of being married to any of them is still very weird, but he can't help but think there could be a better solution here that he's missing.
And then he feels it, a pull telling him he's overlooked something, someone important.
It's like a fire engulfing his ice core but not burning it somehow, just as it does not cool the fire around it.
Two opposite forces meant to cancel each other out, somehow instead keeping perfect equilibrium with one another.
He talks to Frostbite and Clockwork and finds out what that pull is and takes their advice to follow it.
Jason doesn't realize he just altered the source of all his recent problems to his location as he draws the All Blade to fend off yet another "challenger to the Prince's hand" whatever the hell that means, as finally one of them was dumb enough to try to use actual magic against him.
However, he soon feels the answering pull back from Danny as the latter decides to use the power in his ring to open the portal, feeling that this candidate should at least know he's coming to talk to him.
It's almost the opposite, he feels the fire of the pit madness flaring a bit, but instead of immediately trying to spread, to threaten to consume him unless he tempers it himself, it is still burning just as strong and wild, but kept in one place by an icy chill, an aura of cold, clear fury and calm in equal measure, it doesn't thaw from the fire anymore than his fire dies from the lack of heat around it.
They sustain each other, impossibly.
So Jason and Danny finally meet and give each other the rundown of their side of things and agree that maybe the best bet to not only stop ghosts from attacking Jason and proposing to Danny, but perhaps the key to overthrowing the GIW so the realms' denizens don't have to afterlive in fear and portals can be reinstated to allow travel through the realms and back, not to mention keeping the GIW from going after Jason himself who by their definition is certainly considered an ecto entity, is in fact to go through with the Ring and Blade ceremony.
Jason, at this point, is more of Earth than Danny, who has unfortunately had to step back from his normal mortal life when he turned 18 to take care of realms business, despite still only being Prince.
He was meant to have more time but with the GIW advancing like they had been it was in the realms' best interest as well as his own that he decree the realms going no contact with humans for the foreseeable future.
It's been nearly 3 years since then and they are still getting ghosts back from parts of the world who have been avoiding humans as much as they can.
As soon as he turned 21 all this ghost marriage nonsense has has been making his job of protecting the ghosts in all the realms a lot more difficult, so when ghosts realized he didn't want to be challenged every day for his hand, they went to the next best thing, the top candidate.
Now, Phantom was saying that he's gonna marry the guy they've all been trying to defeat (and failing, to his credit, so at least he was worthy of being top pick)
A lot of them were upset or disappointed, but he explained how this arrangement could potentially help out everyone in the long run and most got on board when they heard the new plan.
Now the only problem is that getting engaged, as mentioned previously, is a ceremony that could prove dangerous to Jason and "not to be insensitive about it, but if you die and become a ghost that sorta defeats one of the main purposes of us even doing this." Danny points out.
"So what's our plan, Your Majesty?" "It's Royal Highness, I'm not king yet, thank the ancients for that." "Yeah yeah, so what are we doing, Your Royal Whinyness?" "Rude. Anyway, there's a chance you might become a full halfa during the process, that means getting a second form and a fully developed core and powers besides the All Blade, which would be better than you dying. So the best way to ensure that outcome, as much as any outcome can be guaranteed anyway, is to start the process of making you a halfa before the ceremony."
"Okay? How do we do that?" "Well, we gotta get some ecto in you - " "aren't you made of that? This better not be a pickup line" "no, not like that! I told you, this marriage doesn't have to be anything more than a contract, I'm about as thrilled about having to get married to save my people as you are about doing this to stop ghost from kicking your ass on a weekly basis." "Excuse me? I won all those fights!" "Yeah, after getting tossed into brick walls 5 times per ghost" "not every ghost tossed me into walls. Box Bitch did throw crates at me tho, that hurt." "Holyshit, Boxy is not messing around anymore huh? Well, makes sense, he's a father now. He doesn't wanna raise his little girl in these conditions. Still glad he lost, but I'm surprised Lunch Lady even agreed to him trying."
So they start Jason on his ecto diet and in the meantime the batfam is brought up to date about everything that's happening and they get to work, Batman gathers the JL to push back on the GIW's fuckery and all of Jason's siblings have an engagement party and a bachelor bash to plan. The girls decide to plan a Bachelorette party for Danny because he deserves to have a break as well.
Jason hates his stupid family, but Danny seems happy to be part of one again after so long, so he sucks it up and plays along.
It's possible that maybe while preparing and planning and helping each other and working together, Jason has gotten to know and developed a fondness for Danny.
Okay so maybe he's a sappy fuck who fell head over heels in love with him in the span of like a month, but this is still just a contract to Danny, and Jason isn't going to push for or expect anything more. Danny doesn't need that kind of stress in his life rn.
Danny has been freaking out since he met his soon to be husband because holyshit that's Red Hood, that is THE Red Hood! No wonder he passed the trial of the All Blade, and the way that fire burned around Danny's core, a fire he now recognized as the warmth answering from Jason's own, made him realize that this is way more than just a contract to him. Still, he'd been part of the realms for a lot longer than Jason ans he was their future king. Jason as part of this contract would be his equal but until the marriage was sealed, he was still technically Jason’s superior. And it didn't feel right to take adventage of that and suddenly change the terms of this deal, to make Jason in any way feel pressured by Danny's own feelings. No, this was just a contract, like Jason wanted it to be. He would keep that promise to him.
Jazz and Babs get together to help their idiot baby brothers figure out their unrequited love is actually very much mutual pining and they're just being stupid.
Anyway the marriage ceremony is a different ritual from the engagement ceremony, the All Blade wielder summons it and presents it to the wearer of the ring, who sheaths it back into the summoner's core, symbolizing that they both have power over the Blade but it belongs to its wielder, and even the king himself may not keep it without permission. The Blade as a manifestation of Jason's will.
(And as a bonus, we know Jason is a literary nerd so he recognizes and appreciates the romance novel tropes happening to him, especially in the high king's court, but he is not a weeb. So I don't think he'd recognize the Utena references happening to him. But you know who I think would? You know who is a weeb who loves swords and is soooo jealous of Todd and his husband right now? It's Damian. Damian's fucking seething that he doesn't get a magic sword. He's so pissed and it's very funny.)

Mending a Family 27/?
Prev | Next
It's Danny's Birthday!
Wow, I was surprised at the support I got on the last chapter with the PTA rivalry. We won't see Avril for a few chapters, but I already have a few ideas.
Danny’s birthday fell on a Friday. Jason asked his little boy if he wanted to have a party with his classmates. He said no.
“I’d rather spend it with you, daddy, and then have a sleepover with Lian.”
So, on Danny’s birthday, Jason took Danny to work on the Mustang instead of going to school. Hank instantly fell for Danny. It helped that the little boy knew about cars, their parts, and the tools used to fix them.
“You’ve taught that boy well,” Hank said while giving Danny some hard candy.
“Thanks,” Jason said. It’s not like he could mention his son came with that knowledge from before.
Jason spent the day with his son while Jazz fixed the house with balloons, bought the cake, and arranged the presents. He didn’t want to leave everything to her, but Jazz had insisted that Danny deserved to spend his birthday with his father.
Jason’s smile didn’t leave the whole day.
Jason bought Danny a burger, fries, a shake, and a sundae for lunch. Jason couldn’t help but laugh with Danny as he wiped the chocolate sauce off his little boy’s face. They fixed the car for a while longer, then walked around the village. At Danny’s insistence, they stopped at a bookstore. He didn’t know why Danny wanted to go to that particular bookstore so badly. Jason felt a weird but nice energy around the place.
It had just opened and seemed to have every genre of books under its small roof. Jason had fun browsing and was already thinking of when he could come back.
Danny went straight to the science books and found a bunch of engineering and, surprise, surprise, space—particularly alien technology and culture. Jason also got a few books that piqued his interest. He got a few trashy romance books, two sci-fi ones, and one with the entire collection of Emily Brontë. Surprisingly, it had been published a few years after her death and was in pristine condition.
“Did you gentlemen find everything you needed?”
Jason’s skin started to get goosebumps, and his breath came out in smokey wisps.
The cashier was pale with vivid green eyes, black hair, a goatee, and pointy ears. He had glasses, a scarf, and a purple coat over a gray shirt. Jason could see fangs when he smiled.
“Hey, Ghost Writer,” Danny greeted.
“Danny, do you know this…gentleman?”
“Yeah, he’s a ghost. He used to help me with my English homework. He keeps records of everything ever written in his library in the Infinite Realms. What are you doing here?”
“Well, little one, after we heard what happened with the Fentons, a few of us were worried. I volunteered to find you.”
“Really, why? You hate leaving your library.”
“I was worried. Despite how we met, you were one of the few ghosts that would visit me. I missed my friend. Although, I’m surprised to see you so small. And who is this with you?”
“This is my daddy, Jason. He loves to read! He reads me bedtime stories at night.”
“Ah, a fellow bibliophile. Always nice to meet someone who appreciates the written word.”
Jason shook the ghost’s hand; it was cold.
“You’re like Danny, aren’t you? Another halfa.”
Jason nodded.
“Well, it’s good to see someone who cares for Danny. Come by anytime you want.”
“You’re going to stay?”
“Yes, this dimension is…interesting. I think I’ll hang around for a while. Maybe find some new inspiration for my writing.”
Jason didn’t know what to think about the other ghost. Hell, he hadn’t met any other ghosts and was a little weirded out that he seemed so…normal. He even gave them a discount.
“Ghost discount,” he said with a wink, “come back whenever you want! And do recommend my shop to anyone who likes books. I have everything from romance to arcane magic.”
Jason filed that away. He should send Raven along. She could give a read on the place.
They went back home. Danny hummed as he read his new books. After seeing Ghost Writer, he seemed in better spirits (pun intended.)
Jazz had done a great job with the decorations. It turned out Raven, Roy, and Lian had also come early to help set up. Jason hugged Raven greeted Roy with a high five, and Lian with a secret handshake.
Danny ran up to Lian and immediately got her attention. He showed off his books, glad to have his cousin, aunt, and uncle around for his birthday. Soon, the two kids were running off with each other.
They freaked out Roy a bit when Danny was flying in circles with Lian in his arms. The kids laughed at Roy’s distress before Raven got the two children. She used the shadows to make figures to entertain the kids. Even little Ellie enjoyed the show.
Then came presents and cake.
The cake had been ordered to be shaped like a rocket. Danny loved it.
The presents came after the cake.
Lian had convinced Grandpa Ollie to get an autograph from Martian Manhunter. Danny squealed in delight at the photograph with the signature. He hugged Lian tightly and stared at it. Jason promised they would get it framed as soon as possible so it wouldn’t get ruined.
Auntie Raven had gotten Danny a lamp that projected stars and planets and changed colors. Danny hugged his aunt, and Raven couldn’t help but feel warmth at the happiness coming off the little boy.
Next, Danny opened Jazz’s present. She gave him a gold locket with a crescent moon and the North Star. In the locket was a picture of Jason and Jazz holding Ellie. Danny put it around his neck and hid it under his shirt. He didn’t want to lose it.
Uncle Roy had gotten Danny a black and silver star globe. It showed every constellation, and the best part, it glowed in the dark. He’d be able to see the stars in his room.
Even though she hadn’t shown up, Talia had also sent a gift. Jason had been a bit nervous, worried it would be another weapon. He sighed in relief when he saw it was a green blanket with gold embroidery. It was lined in fur and obviously very expensive. Even though Danny didn’t really like Talia (she had made his daddy anxious), he couldn’t help but rub his face on the soft material. He would keep it.
Lastly came his daddy’s present. He opened it with gusto. He gasped when he saw a build-your-own model of the Watch Tower Satellite. It had 1,500 pieces and would be three feet tall when completed. It had cost Jason a pretty penny to get it, but getting his son’s toothy grin and hug was worth it.
Afterward, Roy and Lian showed Danny how to use a bow and arrow. Lian even showed off a little at how better she was at it. Danny pouted, but eventually, he started getting the hang of it. He even asked Jason if he could have archery lessons.
“Sure, chum, I’ll see what I can do.”
“What do you mean, ‘you’ll see what you can do?’ I’m right here to teach the little tyke.”
Jason pretended to think about it and sighed dramatically, “Alright, I guess.”
“Why you, little,” Roy chased Jason around. Jason couldn’t help but laugh at his older brother’s antics. He paused for a moment, and Roy tackled him.
Older brother. Somewhere along the way, Roy had become a brother to him and Raven an older sister.
Could I have had this with Dick if I hadn’t come back wrong?
He dismissed the thought. Right now, it was about being happy and spending time with his family.
That night, they started a campfire and roasted some marshmallows. Danny pointed out the constellations and talked about the myths behind them as his little family listened with rapt attention. Jazz and Jason had set up two tents.
While Lian and Danny would sleep in one, Roy and Jason would sleep in another. Raven and Jazz would sleep in the house so Ellie wouldn’t be alone. The two kids didn’t get much sleep. They played with flashlights and told ‘scary’ stories while their fathers listened to the giggling next to them.
“We have great kids,” Roy said.
“Yeah,” Jason answered.
“And I have a great brother and sisters,” Jason said. Roy looked at him and smiled.
Jason closed his eyes as the contentment surrounding him lulled him to sleep.
Special thanks to Jozette_Rosewood_125 for giving me the idea to include Ghost Writer. He won't show up for a bit, but I'll write him again.

Cain and Abel Wept 11/?
Prev | Next
Not really proud of this chapter, but I need a transition lol anyway, enjoy Bruce's and Jazz's POV
Bruce would never admit it out loud, but he was jealous of his youngest and second oldest.
They had gotten a chance to be with Danny all morning and get to know him. Bruce could admit to himself that he yearned to talk one-to-one with Danny.
Instead of wallowing in self-pity, he focused on the task at hand; getting rid of the threat to his children (and trying to talk to Talia to tear her a new one.)
Bruce had Oracle monitoring the city to make sure no suspicious characters were lurking in his city. He may not have been able to protect Danny from the League of Assassins or save Jason from his death, but he would be damned if he let any more harm come to his children.
(Even in the short time he knew about Danny, Bruce had already thought of Danny as his, with or without the biological ties there.)
“Are you sure this will work? It’s not as if the whole UN is there at the moment, and the United States isn’t known for admitting its mistakes,” Maddie asked, bringing Bruce back to the present. Bruce was in the Batcave, talking to the Fentons through video call.
“It may have been last minute, but most countries are coming since it’s a call from the Justice League. It may take a week, but they’ll be there. You provide the evidence you and your allies have complied against the GIWs, and we’ll do the rest.”
“We appreciate everything you’ve done for Danny, Bruce,” Jack said, “We don’t think we would’ve been able to do this so quickly if it weren’t for you and the Justice League. It makes me feel a little bad we didn’t go to you first, but” Jack shrugged.
Bruce understood. The Justice League had been an unknown, and they didn’t want to risk their son (Bruce’s son). Bruce would’ve done the same thing. He could appreciate when parents put their children first (something even he forgot to do sometimes, though he was trying.)
“Do you know what you’re going to talk about and what you’re going to show?”
The rest of the afternoon was spent talking and planning. By the time they were done with their plans, it was close to dinner.
“Bruce,” Maddie said, “thank you for doing this for Danny and us. We will let Danny decide, but if and when he wants to have a relationship with you, we won’t stand in the way. Just be good to our boy.”
Bruce wished he had been there for Danny but thanked whichever higher being that his son had people as loyal as the Fentons when he couldn’t be there.
“It is my pleasure to help you and Danny, more so because he is my son. Thank you for saying what you did. I don’t want to force him, but if he ever wants to build a relationship with me, I would be proud to get to know him.”
“He is extraordinary,” Jack praised.
Bruce smiled; he already knew that.
____
Jazz was glad that Damian and Jason had left before dinner. As proud as she was of Danny, a part of her couldn’t help but be worried for her little brother. Damian may feel guilty, but he still brought unresolved trauma to Danny.
Maybe she should help Danny, but she would have to learn to hide her feelings about Damian. A part of her wished Danny hadn’t forgiven Damian. He hurt her little brother; he didn’t deserve a second chance.
She sighed.
That wasn’t fair. Danny needed this. She just hoped he wasn’t doing it out of guilt.
The small family ate dinner with their parents being cautiously hopeful that the Justice League would be able to repeal the Anti-Ecto Acts. Jazz wanted to be optimistic, really, she did, but she couldn’t be until it happened.
(She knew it was her paranoia but couldn’t stop herself.)
After dinner, Jazz, Danny, and her parents sat to talk about how they would speak to the UN. It was already decided that Danny wouldn’t show up (no matter how much he protested.). Still, he would give them evidence through rules, cultures, and literature written exclusively in the Infinite Realms.
It would be hard to prove a whole species was non-sentient when they saw proof of their poetry and romance books, laws, and art.
Next, Maddie and Jack would hit them with all the pictures and videos Tucker had downloaded when he hacked the GIW. Jazz hated seeing them but knew if Danny had to watch his subjects suffer, she should, too.
After a long evening of sifting through videos, photos, and reports, the elder Fentons decided to go to bed. Jazz and Danny went to the living room and put on a random sitcom show. The canned laughter filled the silence between them.
“You don’t have to do this, Danny.”
Danny frowned, “Of course I do, I may not have wanted to be king, but I am now. I have to protect my people.”
Jazz was shaking her head.
“No, not that, little brother. I mean forgiving Damian.”
The canned laughter grew louder for a moment.
“Who said I forgave him?”
Jazz frowned, “I don’t understand.”
Danny muted the TV and turned to Jazz.
“I’m being…selfish. Ancients, it's worse when I say it out loud.”
Jazz took Danny’s hand and waited patiently for him to continue.
“I already told him I don’t know if I’ll be able to forgive him; I won’t forget. But I want to build something new. I still want my little brother by my side. It might be toxic to want him near me even though I haven’t forgiven his betrayal, but,” Danny looked up, and there was a raw vulnerability in his eyes, “I missed Damian so, so much.”
Hours later, while Danny slept on her lap, Jazz couldn’t help but mull over his words.
She understood it to an extent. If she had been in Danny’s shoes and Danny had been the one that betrayed her, she would still want him near, even if it wasn’t the healthiest thing. Then again, at least Danny was honest with Damian from the beginning.
She sighed; what a clusterfuck.
If she could, she would find this League of Assassins and tear them a new one before destroying everything they had ever built.
She could get Damian to help her. It would be a good bonding experience…
Jazz tensed when she heard light footsteps on the roof. She wouldn’t have heard them if she hadn't had advanced hearing. Which means it could only be a member of the Batfamily.
Jazz felt anger blossom deep in her chest.
How dare they? Danny hadn’t called anyone else up except for Jason and Damian, and here was one of them clearly ignoring Danny’s boundaries.
She carefully maneuvered herself without waking Danny up and took the Boo-staff. She was about to show how feral a Fenton could truly be.
Next Chapter: BAMF! Jazz and a certain member of the Batfam are gonna find out that you don't fuck with the Fentons. Extra points for anyone who guesses who it is that came to visit.
