The Doylist explanation for the metric fuckton of Parentdale retcon in the (very enjoyable) flashback episode is simply that the Riverdale writers are deathly allergic to continuity. Script bible? They don’t know her.

The Watsonian explanation, though?

The Watsonian explanation is that ALICE GONNA ALICE.

Alice Cooper is absolutely past mistress of lies of omission, half-truths, shading the truth, editorial bias, and just plain making shit up. As @stirringsofconsciousness pointed out to me last night via text as we were watching, absolutely everything we saw last night was filtered through Alice’s narration.

And so, in my mind, I’m just going to handwave all the discontinuities by assuming that Alice either misremembered stuff, never knew it to begin with, got sucked into telling a great story, and/or has her own agenda.

(Because, come on. It’s Alice Cooper. She always has her own agenda.)

I just picture Betty breathlessly recapping this whole thing to her friends at the lunchtable, and Veronica’s like, “Girl, my grandma sold Mary Kay, and she was good at it. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard the story about her pink convertible. Where are you getting this stuff about her cleaning toilets?”

Archie interjects: “’They were strangers and then they went their separate ways?’ Betty, my dad and Jughead’s dad were in a band together. And then they worked together for like, ten years.”

“Sorry, Betts,” Jughead says easily, slipping a comforting arm around her shoulder, fingers playing over her collarbone. “The part about them fighting a lot is true, but my grandpa wasn’t a Serpent, and my dad was never headed for college.”

Cheryl clears her throat, somewhat stiffly. “While my mother’s maiden name was, in fact, Blossom...”

Everyone turns to look at her in horror. “...she was from the Montreal branch of the Blossoms! They met in college, at a maple syrup tasting event arranged by a mutual friend...who, yes, was also a distant cousin. But honestly, Betty, your mother’s Gothic imagination knows no bounds.” Betty goes storming back home at the end of the school day and barges into the kitchen. “MOM, I cannot believe that you told me last night that I ‘deserved to know the truth,’ and then fed me yet another pack of lies!” Alice simply looks at her over her glass of chardonnay. “Elizabeth, you were interrupting my affirmations. What was I supposed to do?”
