The Facade of Iron Circus Comics and Spike Trotman

I feel like this needs to get some more traction on social media…

#comicsbrokeme trended recently, with comics creators and artists telling horror stories of extreme low wages, cruel bosses, and the constant struggle to make ends meet.

One company, and one person came up in an alarming amount of posts… Iron Circus Comics and its founder, Spike Trotman.

What Trotman has been accused of is not just run of the mill mismanagement or low wages, though they are infamous about underpaying and missing payment dates. They will actively and precisely bully, berate, and mentally destroy creators working under them. Trotman uses their clout as an internet famous comics publisher to keep people in line, and a recurring threat that if creators ever spoke out, Spike would sic their fans on them.

If you ever wondered why so many creators from Slipshine and Iron Circus up and vanished, THIS IS WHY. Several artists and creators have said that Spike Trotman sapped them of their desire to make comics.

This is downright sociopathic behavior to be sure. But then one starts digging into Spike Trotman’s past, and there’s a lot of skeletons in the closet. Squee Rat and Darth Versace were their previous handles on the internet. Squee Rat may sound familiar to people who have heard of the ‘Burned Furs’ movement.

Burned Furs was a puritanical, homophobic, transphobic offshoot of the furry fandom, founded by Spike Trotman, who also wrote the ‘Furry Manifesto’, which outlined their goals of getting rid of pornography, degeneracy, and expression of sexuality in the furry community. They distributed pamphlets at cons encouraging ‘degenerates’ to kill themselves.

A very inconvenient past to have when your brand is leftist and sex positive. Spike very much knows this, and they have tried to scrub all evidence of their past as Squee Rat from wikis and articles about Burned Furs.

Right now, Spike is hoping that this all dies down. In fact, they just had a big party for the success of the Lackadaisy cartoon pilot.

Especially ironic given that Spike once encouraged people to eat one meal a day to make ends meet in the comics industry.

What you can do is make sure this reaches the eyes and ears it needs. Find the dissenting voices against Spike and Iron Circus, and boost them as much as you can.

They shouldn’t be able to hide behind this facade and continue to hurt people.

List Progress: 20/30

The Smut Peddler series has always been a great collection of erotic writing and art, from some thrilling names in the indie comics industry. The latest installment, Sordid Past, continues this pattern and has an even higher hit-rate than previous volumes. Obviously, trying to review and rate smut quickly wanders into the realm of the subjective, but there is a good variety to appeal to many tastes (and kinks).

The premise of Sordid Past is a simple one: each of the stories is set in a historical time period, ranging from ancient civilizations to gamers in the 80’s. There is not too much to say beyond singing the collection’s praises, so I will instead list some of my favorites.

-“Blessed by Baal” by Tzor Edery- The first story in the collection and the oldest time period, this story sets the tone of the book with a seductive, deliberate energy. A fertility ritual is set to begin, and two gender divergent people find each other and their places in their society. The strong, bold art style is very impactful and the orange and red color palate embodies the sultry summer heat.

-“Dances and Dalliances” by Jessi Jordan- Edwardian ballroom dramas are all about the rigid rules of etiquette and polite society, so seeing a pair of sisters behave shamelessly is a great contrast. A widowed woman is her younger sister’s chaperone to a ball, but while she sneaks away for an assignation with her female lover, the younger sister is having her own fling with a young man she’s had her eye on. There’s something special about erotica that is allowed to be fun, and this story is as fluffy and frilly as the gowns they’re all wearing.

-“Conversion” by Otava Heikkila- In a strong collection, this is a standout, both sexy and sensual. A Christian missionary has trekked into the Nordic wilderness to spread his message, but only finds a single man living in an isolated cabin, with no shared language between them. When a blizzard strands the missionary, the two men start to bond and find a connection stronger and more real than anything prescribed religious dogma could create.

-“A Queer Sort of Creature” by Rowan Woodcock- A polyamorous triad of silent film actors fool around after a day of shooting. It’s not that deep, but not everything has to be, and it’s hot.

These four are the tops, but there are plenty more to recommend; having read almost every Smut Peddler collection, Sordid Past has the highest percentage of stories I enjoyed, with only a couple not doing it for me. If you are in the mood for some fun, occasionally moving, illustrated smut, Sordid Past is a great place to start.

Graphic novel: "Sex Machine" anthology

Smut Peddler returns, and zooms in the opposite direction of their previous collection, "My Monster Boyfriend," opting for scifi over fantasy. Although that isn't to say there aren't fantastic elements to this book. Most notably, "The Stuppa" by Harlotin straddles scifi and fantasy, evoking and poking "technology of the ancients."

My favorite has to be "Rendevouz with Ain." A spacefarer contacts a trapped AI, and goes out to rescue her, including uploading her into a brand-new body. The robot girl is just the CUTEST thing, and seeing her fall apart as she experiences physical sensations for the first time is just…A+.

For humor, the very first story hits the mark: "Vanilla Game" by Fiona Staples (recognizable for her artwork in Saga). A gamer gets a little hot under the controller for an NPC, and is delighted to find a mod to prove she's not the only one. The sex is brief in this one, but the point is more punchline than moneyshot.

Props to "Bodywork" by Amanda Lafrenais for proving that I may have additional kinks. 😳 And for being one of the few F/F (for certain robotic definitions) pairings in the book. But, seriously, how am I supposed to NOT be into the big, pretty robot lady? The big…BIG pretty robot lady.

"Five...four...three...two...one!" You hear Wally count down as you settle into your hiding place in the bedroom closet. The next few minutes are filled with silence except sounds of Wally's footsteps as he searches for his friends. Suddenly you hear the bedroom door open and footsteps entering. Shit. You start to panic and decide that maybe standing behind the clothes on the rack will give you some cover. As you try to quietly wedge yourself behind the clothes the closet door swings open. You freeze as your eyes meet Wally's as he finds you awkwardly shoved halfway behind the hanging clothes.

Wally grins at the sight and as you open your mouth to admit defeat you find yourself once again in darkness, as Wally shuts the closet door behind him and firmly presses you against the back wall of the closet. You gasp into Wally's mouth as he roughly kisses you, your mind going blank for a moment before you begin to kiss him back. You feel a hand travel down, tugging at your waistband. You pull back from the kiss in surprise, "Wally..?" you whisper. You'd never seen this kind of thing from Wally before, honestly you weren't even sure he knew about sex at all. He seemed oblivious to your flirting and the odd lewd joke from Barnaby seemed to leave him confused. "Wally what are you...what are you doing?"

A moment of silence follows as Wally ponders your question. "Isn't this what you want, Neighbor? What you like?" "What I like? What do you mean?" You feel a hot breath on your ear as Wally leans in to whisper, "I've seen the kinds of things you watch...the things you watch when you're alone..." You feel his hand slip under your waistband, you shiver as his hand glides along your skin.

"Wally, how-"

"Shhh..." he interrupts, "just let me do this." You feel his fingers finally slip between your folds, making you jolt. "Does that feel good, Neighbor? Am I doing this right?" He asks as he begins to rub at your clit. "Uh-huh" is all you manage to squeak out, your brain overwhelmed. "I think...I think I should do this faster, yes?" He begins to speed up his rhythm, the tension building in your core. "Fuck!" you whisper, followed by quiet laughter from Wally. "Ha ha ha...I don't usually hear you swear Neighbor...does it feel that good?"

"Shit. Yes. You're going to make me cum." You struggle to say in a whisper. "Oh...I think I know what that means." You swear you can hear the grin on his face when he speaks. The unexpectedness from this moment has you far more excited than usual; you bite your lip to keep quiet as you quickly approach climax. Wally senses you starting to tense up and applies more pressure to your aching clit, sending you over the edge. You feel your legs go weak and grip onto Wally's shoulders to steady you. You try not to break the skin as you bite even harder into your lip as small sounds manage to escape you.

You stand there trying to gather yourself when you feel Wally remove his hand and shift away from you. "That was amazing, Neighbor." Wally says as you hear the door click, followed by a slice of light entering the closet as he opens the door.

"We should try that again, sometime." He says with a smirk, before exiting the closet.

ok ok butler scene and "whatever happened to my mad love" are wonderful but DAMN I love how DUrge brings out this little duality of Astarion if you mention after the fact that it targeted him because you love him.
