"WHERE IS THE FUTURE"

Working in graphic design and advertising Andrés Montoya, aka Toxicómano, told @RadioNacionalCo the streets provided the perfect opportunity to express himself—he could not "leave the public space only to advertising." One of the founders of the Toxicómano Callejero collective he has become famous for his expressions on walls across Bogotá, refashioning the images and ideas from advertising to question the false standards of capitalism. Toxicómano's thought provoking stencils, however, are increasingly popping up across Europe and North America, and in 2018 he was back in Los Angeles where he painted "Where Is the Future" at 48th St and Western Ave for @SmileSouthCentral .  @toxicomanocallejero/

DON LENCHOS

In early 2018 @GabbaGallery hosted a show "Borderless: Latin America" in collaboration with @SmileSouthCentral, convening six street artists from Colombia, Brazil, and Mexico while highlighting a dysfunctional US immigration policy. Originally from Mexico City, Iskar was inspired by classic illustration, vintage comics, and modern pop art, and after studying graphic design spent several years in London. Moving more and more into muralism Gabba Gallery says street art "has transformed into a fluent language for the artist." A familiar figure in Los Angeles Iskar took advantage of the "Borderless" visit to also paint a number of murals around Southern California, near the gallery as well as this colorful work in South Central. Bringing a touch of the tropics with him this small mural was painted at Don Lencho, a Salvadoran restaurant on Normandie Ave with must-try pupusas.  @1skr/

“SAME BLOOD, DIFFERENT SOUL”

@CultureTrip calls Juegasiempre, aka DJ LU, “one of Colombia’s most overtly political artists.” Picking up the DJ LU name during his DJing days he’s also a trained architect, but is best known at home for his images of homeless people and his pineapple grenades. Australian artist CRISP spent 10 years traveling and creating art before settling in Bogota, and says this “vibrant, chaotic ‘street art’ mecca” inspired him to move from more traditional mediums to painting on walls. In 2015 the Colombian visitors collaborated on this wall at 48th and Wall Streets in Los Angeles for the Adam Ayala-curated @SmileSouthCentral project. During their time working on this wall the artists learned that the corner had been the site of a 2008 shooting that left 2 dead and 3 injured, and dedicated this wall to the memory of 21-year-old Brenda Aguilar.
