In Jamaican dancehall music, a riddim is the instrumental accompaniment to a song and is synonymous with the rhythm section. Jamaican music genres that use the term consist of the riddim plus the voicing (vocal part) sung by the deejay. A given riddim, if popular, may be used in dozens—or even hundreds—of songs, not only in recordings but also in live performances.
Since the 1970s, riddims have accompanied reggae music and through the 1980s, more widely known as dancehall. As seen in dancehall music, there is a voicing part – sung by the DJ – over some riddim that has probably been widely used in many other songs. There is a unique establishment in the combination of riddims and voicing.
By 1993, Jamaica finally established a copyright act, but producers still face difficulty in establishing profit. Through proper registration, many artists now work on negotiating their royalties and taking it more seriously. The unique nature of dancehall and riddims have been highly influential on the numerous remixes that now circulate throughout R&B and hip-hop music.
Tumblr media
Some classic riddims, such as "Nanny Goat" and "Real Rock" both produced by Clement "Coxsone" Dodd, are essentially the accompaniment tracks of the original 1960s reggae songs with those names. Since the 1980s, however, riddims started to be originally composed by producers/beatmakers, who give the riddims original names and, typically, contract artists to voice over them. Thus, for example, "Diwali" is the name not of a song, but of a riddim created by Steven "Lenky" Marsden, subsequently used as the basis for several songs, such as Sean Paul's "Get Busy" and Bounty Killer's "Sufferer."
"Riddims are the primary musical building blocks of Jamaican popular songs.... At any given time, ten to fifteen riddims are widely used in dancehall recordings, but only two or three of these are the now ting (i.e., the latest riddims that everyone must record over if they want to get them played in the dance or on radio).... In dancehall performing, those whose timing is right on top of the rhythm are said to be riding di riddim.
Tumblr media
The bass culture of Jamaican sonic sensibilities is characterized with less emphasis on melody and large emphasis on the drum beats and low frequency bass vibrations to draw attention to the social grounding to the culture. These aspects of Jamaican music are expressed visually through the Dancehall choreography and its African inspired folk traditions, which emphasize earthly connection through flat-footed stamping and “bumper-grinding sexually explicit choreography, where the bass note is struck by the body itself—displaying its fecundity and celebrating its fertility”. This bass culture is also embodied sonically by the music's heartbeat, the bass lines often described as riddims, produced in the late 1960s and early 1970s. These riddims offer a sonic foundation on top of which different other sounds are incorporated to form innumerable versions.
Tumblr media
African in origin (see clave (rhythm) and bell pattern), riddims can generally be categorized into three types. One of the oldest types of riddim is the classical riddim providing roots reggae, dub, and lovers rock with instrumentals, such as Bam Bam, produced by Sly & Robbie. The second type is the ragga riddim backing raggamuffin and dancehall songs, such as the Juice riddim, produced by Richard "Shams" Browne. The third type is the digital riddim, such as Sleng Teng, Punaany Riddim & Duck Riddim produced by King Jammy.
A number of riddims take their name and influence from African-Jamaican religious drumming such as the Kumina riddim, created in 2002 by Sly and Robbie, and Burru.

Truth, Dare, or Statistics
Sylvester Dodd x Reader
Warnings: fluff, female reader, bit of self-deprecating talk, Paige outs your crush on Sly
"You should just tell him." Paige's voice startled me out my trance. I shook my head and turned to look at her.
"What?"
She sighed. "You need to tell Sylvester. It would make you feel better."
"Oh no. No, no, no. I cannot tell him! He is a certified genius and I'm just a nobody. Seriously, I don't even know why you guys let me hang around," I said.
Paige sat next to me at the table, laying a hand on my arm. "You are not a nobody. Everyone loves having you around. You are smarter than you think and you help everyone here."
I laid my head on her shoulder, resting my hand on hers. "Thanks Paige. But still, Sly could do so much better than me."
"He really couldn't. He loves you."
I shot straight up and stared at her. "Nu uh. You are kidding me."
Paige smiled. "You're just too busy denying everything to see it. But I see they way he looks at you when you're not paying attention. You're the moon to him."
My face scrunched in confusion. "Isn't it normally 'you're the sun'?"
"How do you look at the sun?" Paige countered.
"I don't. It hurts."
"And how do you look at the moon?"
I sighed, seeing her point. "Like it's the most beautiful thing in existence. But come on, Paige."
Paige shook her head. "Don't you dare. I may not be a certified genius but I can tell when someone's in love."
I shrugged.
Paige patted my shoulder. "You'll see." She ignored my gaze as she stood from the table and walked off. She walked over to the staircase and called up to our friends.
"Guys, break time! Get down here!"
She had a smile on her face as she walked back over to me and pulled me to the couch.
Surprisingly, our friends had listened to her and came downstairs.
"What's going on, Paige?" Walter asked, taking a seat next to his girlfriend.
Paige pulled out her phone and began typing. "You guys have been up there for hours so it's time for a break. I ordering pizza and we're gonna play a game."
"Ooh, what kind of game?" Toby asked.
Paige finished ordering and put her phone away. "We're gonna play Truth, Dare or Statistics."
"What's that?" Happy asked, grabbing a chair from the table.
"It's like basic truth or dare but you have the option to ask for a statistical question. So if it was my turn and I asked (Y/N) "truth, dare or statistic" and she chose statistic, I would ask a statistical question such as "how many women have green eyes". She would give me an answer and if she was correct, it'd be her turn to ask somebody else but if she gets it wrong then I get to make her do whatever I want." Paige explained.
"I like this game!" Toby exclaimed, sitting by Happy.
"I take it I'm in charge of deciding if a statistics answered correctly?" Sylvester asked. He grabbed a chair and moved to sit by me so we were all sitting in a circle.
"Yup. Ready to play?"
The group agreed and the game began. Toby managed to dare Happy to let Paige dress her in one of her outfits and Walter got asked who he was secretly jealous of. (He tried to get out of it but said it was Sly.)
The pizza came after a couple of rounds and we chowed down as we continued on with the game.
We were dying of laughter as Sylvester got dared to sing the National Anthem in falsetto. Finally Paige turned to me.
"Truth, dare, or statistic, (Y/N)?"
"Statistic. Let's see if my random ability to guess numbers works on this."
"What is the likelihood that Sylvester has a crush on you?"
Everything went quiet. I felt frozen as Paige's question processed in my head. I couldn't look at anybody else but Paige, too scared to see what their reaction would be.
"0%. We've talked about this Paige," I answered quietly.
"But you're wrong! Please, I just want to see my best friends happy!" Paige pleaded.
I shook my head and stood up. "Thanks for trying, Paige. I'll see you later."
I started walking away when Sylvester called out. "Paige is right! Don't you want to hear the correct answer?"
I stopped walking and wiped the tears from my eyes. "Sure," I said turning around, faking a smile.
Sly took a deep breath, fiddling with his fingers. "The likelihood that I have a crush on you is not 0%. It's 100%. I've just been too scared to say anything because I thought you could do better."
"Sly, no one could be better than you. You're a literal genius and so so kind to everyone. What's not to love about you?" I walked over to where Sylvester was standing, fighting the nerves.
Sly smiled and took my hand. "So what do you say? Will you let me take you on a date?"
I smiled back and nodded.
"Finally!" Toby yelled.
I jumped and turned to face my friends that I forgot were still here. "What?"
"We've been waiting forever for you two to finally confess." Happy explained.
"The fact that you couldn't see the pining happening was excruciating! I was dying to force you two into a closet till you guys kissed but Paige said no." Toby added.
"Which is why I'm confused you practically forced them to say something now." Walter pitched in.
Paige grimaced. "I know. I didn't want to force you guys to do anything but I didn't want to see you in pain coming up with different scenarios where Sly rejected you, (Y/N). The guys needed a break from their work so they wouldn't get burned out and I saw an opportunity."
I glared at Paige before smiling gently. "Well, thank you I guess. I probably wouldn't have done anything if you hadn't intervened."
Sylvester squeezed my hand and smiled. "At least we know now. No sense worrying about what might have been."
I nodded and leaned against him. "I think we've had enough of a break. Sly, wanna show me what you've been working on?"
Sly nodded and began talking about his project as we made our way upstairs. I looked back over my shoulder and smiled at Paige, giving her a silent thank you.
She smiled back and nodded.

His career soon took off and Wilson spent most of the following two decades producing hits for Dodd, as well as Sonia Pottinger, and Bunny Lee. These six tracks, recorded at Channel One and produced by Augustus ‘Gussie’ Clarke, feature the unbeatable drums and bass of Sly And Robbie. ...”

I know CBS’s Scorpion ended several years ago, but I’m doing a rewatch. I’m back on S1. And, I’ve noticed some interesting things in early S1:
1. Walter in much more “human” during the first half of season one. He seems to care more about his friends.
2. The other members of the team are allowed to “show off” their skill sets more. In later seasons, it’s mostly Walter who figures out what to do and the others do as he says.
3. Happy and Walt’s friendship is much more visable and Happy and Paige also have a friendly relationship.
4. Overall, all the characters are friendly and more human. I know a lot of people say that the show found itself in the middle of season one, but I kind of like the first 5 episodes (that I’ve rewatched) of season 1.

the fact we continue to see Sylvester wearing his wedding band, despite the time frame etc, is honestly my favourite thing? he obviously took the time to preserve it so it would have no problem lasting on his finger longer than the average bandaid. plus the possible event of festering germs it could attract and yet you see it clear as day in every episode, even on the island, and it just makes me smile so much.

Am I the only one who's tired of the "Sly is afraid of everything but gets over his fears and does the job so therefore he is brave and interesting" bullshit? There's no actual character development for him. He's just there. Season 4 was setting up some internal conflict for him, but it got canceled. So i decided to write a list of all the internal conflict for the characters.
Sylvester Dodd
His desire is to be seen as a strong, brave man, and have people take him seriously. We see that desire when he sees his own obituary, and how brief it was. In the S3 finale, we see him writing an account of what happened on the island, and uploading it online, only to find out in the S4 finale that he's been writing and uploading false accounts of the Scorpion cases for years where he does the things Walter does. He is doing everything from Alderman to Lawyer, winning gaming tournaments and becoming chess grandmaster in his youth, and risking his life at Scorpion so that he would be seen that way, and be able to see himself that way.
His fear is of living in shame. We find out how that fear sparked in S1E10 "Talismans" when he tells Megan that his parents were frustrated by the way he was, so they sent him off to his aunt's house. His father was out on missions because he didn't want to be around him. He was constantly humiliated throughout school as a child, and he has had a lot of shameful moments in the show. From S2E19 "Ticker" where he drops the bowl because of a monkey and almost messes up the mission, to S3E14 "Sharknerdo" with the pictues of him in a wizard costume reaching Denmark, to S3E19 "Monkey see, monkey poop" where he sits out on the mission due to his fear of monkeys, and has a psychosomatic reaction due to shame and guilt. In S3E17 "Dirt seeds done cheap", we see the worst fears of the team, Happy is being rejected, Cabe is weakness and Sly is just ... chickens? No, it's deeper than that. In his childhood, a bully locked him in a zoo cage with chickens while all his class laughed it him. It was the most shameful moment him his life. In that episode, he experiences that same situation, that same shamefulness. Sly's biggest fear is living in shame and people being ashamed of him and not taking him seriously. All his phobias keep people from taking him seriously like he wants, and puts him in shameful situations for his age and status. I hate the writers for not focusing on it.
Walter O'brien
His desire is to be loved for who he is. We see that when he dates Linda. Toby tells him about the damsel effect, and he says that she likes him for him, only to find out Toby was right. Then When Tim dates Paige, he tries to become normal so that Paige would want him. If he's not gonna be loved for who he is, then he would pretend to be someone else. Then in S4, we see him continuing to do that.
His fear is of that same love. Every single time he has ever connected with someone, it always ended in pain for him. From Cabe to Megan and his parents, and Linda and who knows how many other attempts. In the S3 finale when Paige asks Walter how he feels about their relationship, he says he feels sick to his stomache. He is hopeful, but terrified. In the S4 finale, they prove him right.
His second desire is to save as many lives as possible. He wants to make up for the lives that were lost in Baghdad when he was a child, and he's willing to do anything for it, even if it costs him his life.
His second fear is of people dying because of him like in Baghdad. Whenever that happens like in S2E6 "Tech, drugs, rock and roll" he goes suicidal to save the people in danger. It's honestly so impressive that a character that was treated like a joke for the better part of the show still managed to be interesting.
Happy Quinn
Her desire is to have a family and experience stability, security and happiness. She grew up moving from foster home to orphanage and back. When she marries Toby, she starts spending time with Walter, Paige and Ralph as a family instead of Toby because she longs for the childhood that she didn't have. Later she tries to have a baby with Toby before they decide to adopt.
Her fear is of being rejected and alone. Her own father left her at St.Luke's when she was 2. She was the odd one out in the orphanage and no one would adopt her, while all the other kids were adopted. When she grew up, she was constantly on the move because she couldn't provide a stable life for herself. Until Walter came and did just that for her.
Toby Curtis
His desire is to prove that he is worthwhile, and gain the approval of others. We see this desire in S1E4 "Shorthanded" when Toby almost messes up the mission because he wants Walter's approval. And he keeps seeking Walter's approval until S2E6 "Tech, drugs, rock and roll" when Walter drains the oxygen from the room Toby is in, he faints, and when he wakes up, he comes to believe that Walter truly doesn't care about him. He starts seeking Happy's approval along with her heart he's been already seeking. Until he marries her in S3, by which time he starts trying to grant all her wishes to prove his worthwhile.
His fear is of being worthless. We find out how that fear sparked in S1E10 "Talisman" when he tells Happy about his past. He had a clinically bipolar mother and his neglective and unloving dad struggled to manage her illness. He became a doctor to help them both and failed, resulting in his crippling guilt and self-worth issues. Those issues are beneath the surface, seen in his little interactions with Walter and Happy across the seasons. Especially in S4 when he finds out about his sperm conditions and those fears resurface again.
Paige Dineen
We really don't see much internal conflict with her aside from the fact that she fears abandonment because her mother and Drew abandoned her. Which is probably the reason her character is so uninteresting and one of the many reasons Waige falls short to Quintis.
Cabe Gallo
There are two main internal conflicts with him over the course of the show. Season one has his internal conflict over the secret of Baghdad and how Walter would react to it. Season 3 had internal conflict with him wanting to find love again, and his fear of weakness.
Ralph Dineen
He's just there.

Mike Dodds Domestic Headcanons
Tumblr media
who reaches out to new neighbors
Mike. Definitely. He’s just that guy sometimes, even if it’s not him, you can be sure his Dad’s introducing himself and Mike, who can’t help but eyeroll half the time.
·       who remembers to buy healthy food Have you seen this guy? He’s a fitness buff, he’s clearly the one buying the healthy stuff, begging you to swap your faved Pringle’s for kale chips once in a while (which you obviously scoff at..where’s the joy in eating a homemade kale chip?!) You do willing submit to his cooking though, realizing that healthy, fit-boy meals can actually taste good…if you drench them in enough hot sauce…
·       who remembers to buy junk food Obviously you. You don’t keep much in the house, but you’ve got a cupboard stocked with all your favourites. One night you wake up to find Mike not in bed, knowing he has trouble sleeping some nights you make your way out into the apartment, giving a soft giggle as you find him shoveling cocoa puffs into his mouth straight out of the box. You also notice that after particularly rough cases, your Nutella jar depletes itself magically.
·       who fixes the oven when it breaks Mike does his best, and it works for a few days before crapping out again. It comes up at dinner at the Dodd’s residence that Sunday, and William’s quick to say he’ll send his work guy over. Which causes you to catch eyes with Mike, a sly grin on your face, holding back laughter at the stereotypical action of his Dad.
·       who waters the plants/feeds their pet(s) You both do, you usually get up at the same time/eat dinner together, so whatever animal lives with you is simply a part of meal time. Though sometimes the pet begs beyond belief at the person who didn’t feed it, and ends up getting double fed, much to its joy.
·       who wakes up earlier Most mornings you get up together, relishing in the warmth of each other’s bodies for a bit as you snooze the alarm. Otherwise you’re up first, taking more time in the shower/to get ready before Mike gets up.
·       who makes the bed Neither of you. What’s the point when you’re just going to get back into it tonight? You’re only in your bedroom for sleep and fun times, it doesn’t bother either of you.
·       who makes the coffee Mike. You roll out of bed to shower/start to get ready while he sleeps for a bit longer. The sound of the shower usually lulls his sleep, his alarm set perfectly to when you step out and begin your skincare/makeup routine, coffee’s always ready right as you enter the kitchen, accepting the soft kiss from him as he hands you the mug.
·       who burns breakfast You. You hate it ‘cause you were trying to do something nice for Mike on his birthday/your anniversary, making sure to get up earlier than him, doing your best to make something elaborate. When he does get up, he finds you in tears over it, thinking you’ve ruined everything. He simply tugs you into his arms, giving you a tight squeeze reminding you how much he loves you, and who cares about a home cooked breakfast, you can just order in. Or got out somewhere with mimosa’s and really celebrate.
·       how do they let each other know they’re leaving the house Mike’s usually the one taking off at weird hours, making sure to give your cheek a soft kiss. When you first started dating, he’d always leave a note/send you a text, once you got used to it you told him he didn’t need to do it anymore. As much as you hated waking up in a cold bed, you knew he had an important job and was on call basically 24/7
·       how do they greet each other when one of them gets home Mike always pulls you into a soft hug, laying a kiss on the top of your head, letting your body sink against his in relaxation before meeting your lips with a gentle kiss, telling you ow much he loves you.
·       who brings home little gifts like flowers/chocolates more often Mike. Hands down. He hates the way his parent’s marriage dissolved, and doesn’t ever want you to think that work is more important than you. To help make up for that he’ll pick up things on the way home. Not that you need them, you know how much he loves you, but you always accept them graciously, giving him an enthusiastic kiss and thank you.
·       who picks the movie for movie night It’s usually you, Mike’s usually more busy with work, though he always bookmarks his favourites/watch list on whatever streaming sites you use, and always smiles warmly when you hit one of those for your movie night. He just loves the way you snuggle up against him, burying into his side, humming in satisfaction at the way his arm wraps around you.
·       their favorite kind of movie to watch He like’s bro type comedies, and he’s surprised when you enjoy them just as much. It’s rare you pick a random romantic movie, usually saving those for a girls night. Thought Mike will enjoy a rom-com or two with you.
·       who first suggests a pillow fort Surprisingly, it’s Mike. He knows you’ve had a rough week and just wants to make you happy, make you laugh. He rolls his eyes at your scoff, tugging you off the couch as he starts to pile blankets and couch cushions around you, causing you to laugh.
·       who builds the pillow fort Mike initiates it, but once he’s got you laughing, you join in, forgetting about the drama of the day.
·       who tries to distract the other during the movie It’s usually you, Mike likes to keep his attention on the tv, keep the sex in the bedroom, but he’s not against a heavy cuddle session while you watch
·       who falls asleep first You. Mike has a soft spot for watching you sleep. He relishes in how peaceful, innocent and adorable you are when you’re asleep. The way you curl around his chest, the way your fingers twitch to interlock with his when he’s spooning you.
·       who is big spoon/little spoon Mike’s the big spoon. He takes it into a protection move, he always wants to make sure you’re safe, and his body wrapped around yours is the best way to feel that.

Today we remember the passing of Toots Hibbert who Died: September 11, 2020 in Kingston, Jamaica
Frederick Nathaniel "Toots" Hibbert, OJ (8 December 1942 – 11 September 2020) was a Jamaican singer and songwriter who was the lead vocalist for the reggae and ska band Toots and the Maytals. A reggae pioneer, he performed for six decades and helped establish some of the fundamentals of reggae music. Hibbert's 1968 song "Do the Reggay" is widely credited as the genesis of the genre name reggae. His band's album True Love won a Grammy Award in 2005.
Hibbert was born on 8 December 1942 in May Pen, Jamaica, the youngest of his siblings. Hibbert's parents were both strict Seventh-day Adventist preachers so he grew up singing gospel music in a church choir. Both parents died young and, by the age of 11, Hibbert was an orphan who went to live with his brother John in the Trenchtown neighborhood of Kingston. While working at a local barbershop, he met his future bandmates Raleigh Gordon and Jerry Matthias.
Hibbert, a multi-instrumentalist, formed Toots and the Maytals in 1961. He could play every instrument used in his band and would later cite Otis Redding, Ray Charles, Wilson Pickett, and James Brown as key influences. According to Hibbert, Maytals is a reference to the Rastafari term for "do the right thing". There are also statements attributing the source of the name to Hibbert's hometown of May Pen. The band was originally a trio with Gordon and Mathias, and later added Jackie Jackson and Paul Douglas.
Much of Hibbert's early recorded output, such as "Hallelujah" (1963), reflects his Christian upbringing. He was also known to write about Rastafarian religious themes, and in an early Maytals song, "Six And Seven Books of Moses" (1963), he addressed the folk magic of obeah and its use of the occult literature of Biblical grimoires, such as the Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses.
The Maytals became one of the more popular vocal groups in Jamaica in the mid-1960s, recording with producers Coxsone Dodd, Prince Buster, Byron Lee, Ronnie Nasralla, and Leslie Kong. This success included winning Jamaica's National Popular Song Contest three times with songs Hibbert wrote: in 1966 with "Bam Bam", which won a national song competition, 1969 with "Sweet and Dandy" and 1972 with "Pomps & Pride"
The first Toots and the Maytals album released and distributed by Chris Blackwell's Island Records was Funky Kingston. Music critic Lester Bangs described the album in Stereo Review as "perfection, the most exciting and diversified set of reggae tunes by a single artist yet released." Chris Blackwell had a strong commitment to Toots and the Maytals, saying "I've known Toots longer than anybody – much longer than Bob Marley. Toots is one of the purest human beings I've met in my life, pure almost to a fault."
Hibbert also appeared in the groundbreaking Jamaican film The Harder They Come, in which his band sings "Sweet and Dandy". The film's soundtrack included the Maytals' 1969 hit song "Pressure Drop". The Harder They Come features fellow musician and actor Jimmy Cliff in the leading role as Ivan, a character whose story resembles Hibbert's.
On 1 October 1975, Toots and the Maytals were broadcast live on KMET-FM as they performed at the Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles. This broadcast was re-mastered and released as an album entitled Sailin' On via Klondike Records.
In 2004, Hibbert was featured in Willie Nelson's Outlaws and Angels. Hibbert carried on touring the world, and his band's True Love won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 2005. Nelson released a reggae album entitled Countryman (2005) which featured Hibbert on the song "I'm a Worried Man". Hibbert was also featured in the music video for the song, which was filmed in Jamaica.
In 2006, Toots and the Maytals covered Radiohead's "Let Down" for the Easy Star All-Stars album Radiodread, a reggae version of the English rock band's OK Computer. At the end of the year, Hibbert joined Gov't Mule for their New Year's Eve concert, documented in their Dub Side of the Mule release.
In 2009, Hibbert collaborated with MCPR Music and Steel Pulse's Sidney Mills, who produced Jamaican percussionist Larry McDonald's album Drumquestra. His track is called "What about the Children?" The same year he also performed vocals with Iowa reggae band Public Property on their album Work to Do.
In 2011, Hibbert was featured in the documentary Reggae Got Soul: The Story of Toots and the Maytals which was airred on BBC. Described as "The untold story of one of the most influential artists ever to come out of Jamaica", it features appearances by Marcia Griffiths, Jimmy Cliff, Bonnie Raitt, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Willie Nelson, Anthony DeCurtis, Ziggy Marley, Chris Blackwell, Paolo Nutini, Paul Douglas, Sly Dunbar, and Robbie Shakespeare.
In May 2013, Hibbert received a head injury after being hit by a thrown bottle during a performance at the River Rock Festival in Richmond, Virginia, U.S. forcing him to cancel several months of live shows. The bottle was thrown by William C Lewis. Lewis was facing a charge of malicious wounding, but he pleaded guilty to lesser charges. Despite Hibbert pleading in a letter to the judge, "He is a young man, and I have heard what happens to young men in jail. My own pain and suffering would be increased substantially knowing that this young man would face that prospect," the judge gave Lewis a six-month sentence.
After a three-year hiatus following the incident at the River Rock Festival, in 2016 Toots and the Maytals returned to the stage and began touring again. Hibbert's vocals appear in the Major Lazer and Bad Royale 2016 collaboration, "My Number", which samples his band's earlier song "54-46 That's My Number".
On 25 July 2018, Hibbert performed on the U.S. television show  The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon with Toots and the Maytals where they debuted an original song entitled "Marley" as well as performing their classic hit song "Funky Kingston" in a live performance.
Toots and the Maytals have been cited as inspiration for other music artists as per career longevity. Jamaican artist Sean Paul explained this in saying, "I've seen some great people in my industry, you know, people like Toots…Toots and the Maytals. Toots, he's a great reggae artist and he's still doing it…He's up there in years and he's doing it. Those kind of artists inspire me. I know I'm just going to keep on doing music as long as I can."
In 2010, Hibbert ranked No. 71 in Rolling Stone magazine's "100 Greatest Singers of All Time". In August 2012, it was announced that he would receive the Order of Jamaica, the country's fifth highest honour
In August 2020, it was reported that Hibbert was in hospital "fighting for his life" in a medically induced coma. On September 12, 2020, a statement on the band's Facebook page announced that he had died, at the age of 77. The Gleaner and Rolling Stone later confirmed the announcement, reporting that Hibbert had died at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston, in a medically induced coma. It was later confirmed that COVID-19 during the COVID-19 pandemic in Jamaica was the underlying cause of his death.

headcanon: “what halloween costumes you rope the SVU boys into”
created in conjunction with @hurricanejjareau. female!reader.
sonny carisi - as soon as halloween starts approaching, there’s a glitter in your eyes every time sonny asks you about it. “we don’t have to do a costume,” he tells you, almost hopeful, but that option is off the table immediately. you’re doing a costume. and when you show him the pieces, laid out, he can’t help but feed off your excitement, especially when it’s all pieced together. the two of you look a vision, mary poppins and bert, and your eyeshadow is a good substitute for the soot, your lipstick staining his cheek. (sickeningly sweet, is barba’s comment at the party hosted by liv. shut up is liv’s reply.)
rafael barba - dressing up? rafael would never. but your eyes, wide and pleading and begging are enough to make him cave, just a little. nothing too extravagant is his stipulation, and when the idea comes to fruition he begrudgingly admits that, well. you did good work. after all, being morticia and gomez addams means he doesn’t have to really wear a costume, just his most menacing black suit and an added mustache. and he is also willing to concede that in your stunning black dress, floor length and fantastic, you’re the star of the show (as you should be, he hums, and the adoration he has for you matches gomez in it’s intensity).
nick amaro - zara is the perfect age for trick-or-treating, and she finds a wonderful ally in you. together, the two of you needle nick until he so graciously agrees to dress up. and then gil gets thrown into the mix, and there’s a full house on the 31st. little does your man know how elaborate the plan is, with liv and noah getting involved, too. after a rewatch, the night is bursting with energy. “monsieur incroyable!” you shout with delight as he comes down the stairs, with gil and zara cheering as dash and violet. with you as mrs. incredible, and noah making a special appearance as jack-jack, it is truly a night to remember (think we can be more flexible? he teases you while the kiddos sprint from house to house, and your response in public is a smack, and the private reply is just for the two of you.)
mike dodds - “let’s have fun this halloween, mike,” you needle him, the two of you working a late night in the precinct. it’s late and the moon’s shining through the windows, but with work the past few weeks he’s impossible to pull away. “what i’m getting is that you already have a plan,” he laughs, and you can’t help your sly smile. he’s a good sergeant, and a great boyfriend, but your mind starts roaming, wondering about the potential bad boy beneath. and with your incredible red lip, you lure him in, the handsome clyde to your beautiful bonnie. (no actual robberies, right? he teases, just to hear your chuckle, and you wholeheartedly agree, making sure to emphasize that he already stole your heart.)
peter stone - peter’s down for a halloween costume, because he loves the way you light up at the prospect. after all, the SVU crew is still getting used to him, and you know it’s a brilliant way to break the ice. but when busyness gets in the way of planning something too elaborate, your mind goes to work, and soon the solution is before you. “you’re stunning in pink,” he laughs, and your dress and plush dog pull together a wonderful elle woods. you’re the perfect duo, elle and emmett, and he can’t help but dream of a day that the two of you end up married, too. (and you know how i feel about your suits, you whisper to him, later when the party’s at its peak. his blush is seen by the whole crew, and when fin asks him about it he can’t help but smile.)
