Doctor Who: Boom Town Is Underrated, I Swear To God
On my rewatch of underrated Nine episodes and I don't understand why people don't like Boom Town. Yes, it's between two of the best two-parters of the RTD era, but it's such a good, solid piece of quiet contemplation, this amazing mix of comedy and drama, this amazing piece of comedy/joy/shenanigans in the front half balanced out with some of the best acting in the entirety of Doctor Who in the back half. Now that I'm writing, I kind of understand why some people aren't here for the more quiet vibe of the dual-date section of the episode, but the concept hits and hits so hard and is so integral to Nine's character development/the Bad Wolf arc and Blon is a fascinating villain and it shows off the dynamic of Rose, the Doctor, and Jack so well (as well as providing some decent Mickey moments, some of the best he gets until the Cyberman arc). Like, it's such a solid piece of television and shows off every character so well AND sets up the power of the heart of the TARDIS and yes, the ending is cheesy, but I don't know why it's so low down on so many people's lists of best episodes of the show.
(Also, Christopher Eccleston does not have a single bad moment of acting as the Doctor and I am constantly in awe of how he's firing on all cylinders in every single moment.)

Ok, one thing I love about big finish is I can immediately go on their site and find out they not only have content starring such a niche and obscure character as Suzie Costello in a lead role but also an audio drama where she teams up with an equally obscure character like Blon Fel-Fotch Pasameer-Day Slitheen, a team up which is probably only a big deal to me but they did it anyway because they have the rights to almost of all of the whoniverse so they’re damn well gonna use ‘em! Because why not?!
We whovians really are spoiled for eu material compared to other fandoms.

You've been in that skin suit too long. You've forgotten. There used to be a real Margaret Blaine. You killed her and stripped her and used the skin. You're pleading for mercy out of a dead woman's lips.

While we were out searching for Doctor Who collectibles, we found this big Nine figure. We didn't realise at the time it was actually a WALKIE TALKIE! If the Slitheen had been there, we would have gone back for it.
Is this the silliest Doctor Who collectible out there? Please reblog with pictures of other unhinged DW merch, I need to see it all.

the slitheen: fart a lot, explode when you get vinegar on them, evil laughs whenever they can, once pretended a pig was an alien
oh also they skin people alive and take place in a harrowing discourse on genocide and what it means to be a murderer

cris watches dr. who: s01e11 - "Boom Town"
Tumblr media
"We're in Cardiff. London doesn't care. The South Wales coast could fall into the sea and they wouldn't notice! Oh! I sound like a Welshman. God help me, I've gone native."
Nobody thought to check all the Slitheen were all gone? Dr., I like you, but you're kind of bad on follow-up. People describing him as a force of chaos rather than a force of justice aren't entirely wrong
Hee. I happen to love the Dr.'s big ears
"Probably wondering what four people were doing in a big wooden box." God I miss the eighties
Some journalists have the survival instincts of a lemming. This lady interviewing the Slitheen lady is one of them
The amount of nosy people killed in increasingly silly ways is hilarious, but also... dang, she been busy
The vertical blinking on the Slitheen is almost… cute?
Another episode where we get to pity the monster. She just wants off this rock. Doctor Who is good at these
"Don't answer," sez Jack as the Dr. is roped into a manipulative conversation with the Slitheen. He's right, Doctor. Too smart for your own good. You always think you're the smartest in the room and once somebody ropes you in a conversation, you just talk and talk and talk...
Oh god, I'm the Doctor
Annette Badland, the actress playing the Slitheen, is excellent. (The actress has been in everything too)
Alexa, add "poison ring" to my Christmas wishlist
The Doctor eats meat? That's a little surprising and feels a little OOC
Jesus, keep calm and move on Mickey. Rose obviously has
The Song of the Ship turned her into an Egg? That's a little metaphysical and feels a little deus ex machina, but it does fit the theme of second chances. I like that the Doctor found an option other than killing the Slitheen. Despite the Dr.'s inherent chaos and his repressed anger, he's still basically kind to living things. I like that part about him the most
6 out of 8 Tardes. Episode's a little slow, but definitely a more thought provoking showing for the Slitheen
