re-reading the jake kim arc for funsies AND i just want to say something : no hate to yeonhui but if either one of sinu or jake was a woman their story would be seen as one of the greatest romances ever written... but ptj wrote sinu - a character that is synonymous in the webtoon with the ideal of "romance" - into a relationship that is as bland as coleslaw. maybe it just irks me because there is no real emotional depth that i can draw from sinu's storyline and it feels like he was just given the token "happy ending" with npc 125. and there are two instances that strike me particularly - 1) the "just who am i to you" "my everything" exchange between sinu and jake in 2nd affiliate, and 2) "jake, everything is for you" during the hunt for big deal.

sinu and jake just exhibit such extraordinary levels of soul-matism. if lookism were a romance webtoon, and again, if either of them were female, the perception of their relationship would be immediately altered among a greater portion of readers. sinu always needed someone strong to share his burden for protecting the street and the people he cared about, and jake was just the right person at a not-so-right time. jake who always viewed the idea of romance as a vulgar, perverted, depraved caricature of itself because of his father's infidelity and emotional neglect, had his life altered by sinu's passion and romance, the two ideals with which he protected his family and street.

jake let go of his morals and self-respect and knelt before the same gangsters that he despised, ran an illegal gambling operation, had his teeth knocked out quite literally, went to juvie, lied to and manipulated the people who cared about him, and sacrificed the better days of his youth just for his revenge, his eternal quest to get sinu back. he was even ready to leave sinu with mitsuki, if that's what made sinu happy.

and sinu survived everyday in the indescribable hell of the circus with nothing but his steadfast belief in jake keeping him alive - his unfaltering hope that jake will come for him, no matter what.

the heteronormativity in shonen makes me chuckle sometimes because the writers will literally pen a love story for the ages, a Greek tragedy of star-crossed lovers between two "bros", and call it a day.

to me, jake kim is just a girl for many reasons, the most important one of which is - he CANNOT, for the life of him, love someone normally. you know how siken said "love for you is larger than the usual romantic love. it's like religion. it's terrifying. no one will ever want to sleep with you" ? THAT'S JAKE.

giving up your entire morality and dignity to get back the guy who exhibited minimum fucking decency towards you? giving up all your chances at leading a normal youth, getting beaten up, getting your teeth cut out, humiliated by thugs, thrown into prison, getting out and tirelessly search for three entire years and still being willing to let him stay far way from you if that's what made him happy? and despite all that, him choosing to be with a random girl and still being happy because he was, finally, happy?

jake is so much better than me because the moment sinu chose to leave big deal and go live with yeonhui, i would have actually killed myself.

one of the things that ptj does, which i absolutely enjoy, is : employing an insane amount of similarities while drawing two parallel panels, that just make so much sense. literally one of the best parts of lookism's storytelling.

so here's my personal favourite compilation of whenever ptj does his thing :

starting right off with the original hostel. no words could ever suffice for the enormity of the shivers i felt reading seeing these panels like

something shifted with this revelation... james lee's expression is iconic regardless.

this is a pretty famous one but... jiho's metamorphosis into a monster who leads his crew with terror, unlike jake who lead with loyalty... brad realising jiho's meant to take over big deal... yeah. nothing beats this.

warren biting johan's shoe and. johan biting gun's shoe. the absolute insanity.

i die a little everytime i see these panels because they're truly greek tragedy levels of starcrossed love... like the fight between xiaolung and jake has to be one of the saddest i've ever seen because xiaolung wanted to protect his 'heavens and sky', while jake wanted to get his 'everything' back... no one talk to me.

jiho's stance during his last encounter with his bullies circles back to the stance he takes during one of his very first outburts that we're shown... no matter how cruel he becomes, his own inferiority complex will always be his achilles' heel. at the most dire times our true self will always be revealed, and the most difficult times for jiho meant confronting his bullies, and not the hell that was juvenile prison - an incredible detail about his charcter shown excellently.
