Best Things I Have Bought
I'm not sure how successful I will be in remembering all of it, but I'll try. These have all been game-changers for me, in a variety of ways. If teen me had had access to all of these, I would have been a vastly happier person.
This one is long, so I'll put in a cut.
-outlet timers. Not having to go around and manually turn off lamps at bedtime? Amazing. I bought these but you can and should get some that have a grounded outlet with three prongs so you can attach good extension cords to them.
-famotidine. aka Pepcid, it's the safest option I currently know of for managing acid reflux. I get nauseated when I get acid reflux, so this is a necessity for me.
-T-Gel shampoo. The only one that keeps my husband's insane dandruff under control. Coal tar shampoos smell peculiar, but are totally worth it if they work. For my hair, I like anti-dandruff conditioner--I apply it to my scalp and my other conditioners to the length of my hair. After bleaching my hair, I use Olaplex 3 to prevent more severe damage; the difference is very noticeable.
-white vinegar for a laundry rinse. I get horrendous contact dermatitis and adding this in the "fabric softener" cup in my washer keeps things from making my skin burn.
-on a similar note, all Oxy laundry booster. Doesn't make my skin burn but does make stains and smells noticeably better than detergent alone.
-Aquaphor. If you have eczema, nothing helps like Aquaphor, unless it's hydrocortisone ointment (the same white petrolatum base as Aquaphor but with hydrocortisone) or a prescribed steroid.
-Bissell Stomp 'N' Go pads. I have stomped. The stain goes.
-Prune puree. A packet a day keeps the chronic constipation at bay. Less volume to consume than prune juice and, in my opinion, slightly more palatable.
-Chinotto is a bitters-based beverage that I discovered by accident really helps my chronic nausea. I've tried other brands, and San Pellegrino is definitely my favorite. Tastes weird at first, but when heavy-duty ginger ale doesn't ease it, Chinotto can. And when that doesn't work, I have Zofran (ondansetron) my doctor prescribed me for the nausea I get with migraines, and that's an effective anti-nausea agent for more than just migraines.
-"You Just Need to Lose Weight (And 19 Others Myths About Fat People)" by Aubrey Gordon.
-rolling laundry cart. Doesn't have to be this one but if you CAN roll your laundry to and fro from the machines, do it.
-"Why Does He Do That? Inside the Minds of Angry and Controlling Men" by Lundy Bancroft. If you Google, you can usually find a free pdf floating around.
-"The Vagina Bible," by Dr. Jen Gunter.
-satin scrunchies. Wet Brush. Terry cloth lined shower cap. AOA terry cloth hair turban (way, way better than similar ones from drugstore).
-stretchy work pants.
-bra liners. For large-chested people who tend to get sweaty underboob, this is a life-saver.
-Goo Gone.
-Dr. Scholls medicated foot powder and the Earth Therapeutics tea tree oil foot spray. The foot powder works for super long days and the spray for lighter days.
-Reflective heat pad. I use this on my car seat in the winter and I am so happy for that every single chilly morning. I've repurchased it... once or twice? now.
-Retin-A. I used to use Differin, which is adapalene, the most potent retinoid available over the counter, but the switch to prescription-only Retin-A has been very noticeable. Decreased wrinkles, clearer skin. More inclined to flake and burn but it's worth it for me.
-Red LED therapy. Near-infrared stimulates collagen production in the skin. The only other thing that really does that is retinoids. I bought the Omnilux mask, which is certainly high-end, but HotandFlashy (a YouTube content creator) did a great comparison of different masks available by specs and this was the best at the time. The difference is noticeable within days. I've tried other, lower-powered masks, but what made me make the jump to high-end was that I got the Dennis Gross red LED eye mask for crows' feet off eBay and I was like "holy shit, this is better." And Omnilux is better still. It makes sense, since they were the OG of the models that have been in dermatology clinics for a couple of decades now.
-AOA foundation has been at least as good at my TooFaced foundation, and it's like 1-2 bucks instead of 40. There are light, medium, and deep shades, each on different pages; I'm linking to light because that's what I use. The lightest shade works for me, and I'm basically translucent.
-AOA VitaGlow tinted moisturizer is absolutely my go-to for lighter coverage days.
-AOA PawPaw blending sponges. Best out there and also the cheapest.
-(do not buy any of the AOA eyeshadows. Total waste of time, zero pigment. I've tried repeatedly and they're just garbage. The highlights are generally fine though.)
-Direct acid foot peels. The calluses come off. Just don't do it when you have ANY open wound on the feet, because it's acid and will sting like hell.
-blendercleanser solid cleanser for blending sponges and brushes. Actually a) gets them clean and b) rinses out.
-PureWine wine wands. I let these puppies sit for three minutes in a glass and suddenly I can drink red wine without migraines or hangovers. Fucking miraculous.
-Dustbuster. Holy shit it's amazing for ADHD peeps. Small thing bugging you? Can't get yourself to bust out the "real" vacuum? USE THIS.
-Crocs. Don't @ me. I wear a black pair around the house and for garden chores and they make my feet happy. Salonpas patches and/or BenGay for a topical when you're sore--topicals are great pain relief.
-Vibrating neck pillow. Don't need it right now? Wait until your next head cold. Vibration clears sinuses.
-PooPourri. I love not having to smell poop. This, and similar products, work pretty well by trapping scent particles in the oil layer instead of letting them evaporate into the air.
-Electric snow thrower. I can't manage a large, heavy snow blower and I don't want to deal with a gas engine. This little guy helped me clear my large driveway in 3-4 hours instead of 12.
-The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark, by Carl Sagan.
-Handheld home IPL for hair removal. I ordered this exact one and I like it. You can get these on eBay or Amazon for cheaper sometimes; just make sure you PROTECT YOUR EYES during flashes. Targets pigment in the hair bulb so lighter skin and darker hair work better, and deeper skin tones may burn.
-Lanolin chapstick. Makes all other chapsticks I've used look like garbage.
-Steam eye masks. ShopMissA sells these and you can find them on a lot sites; shouldn't cost more than about a dollar per mask. I ended up buying an electric eye mask because I wanted to treat my dry eye and that just felt more environmentally responsible, but I love falling asleep with these on and I can't do that with my plug-in mask.
I think this is where I'll leave it--I've gone back quite a ways in my shopping history across multiple sites and thought about my daily routines--but if any of these problems torture you, these are my suggestions.

I've still been working on *Odysseus Gambit* this week, so that's what today's snippet is from. (Unless I find something to post from *stars* as an additional snippet later...)
It was huge—easily the size of a small car—looking oddly patchy in the infrared, its tusks easily the width and length of her forearm. She knew, intimately, what those tusks could do—felt the phantom pain in a leg that no longer existed, from a wound given her by one of this monster’s much, much lesser brethren. Boars—boars weren’t supposed to grow to that size! She could see the faint ripples in the air where radioisotopes decayed into heat—how was that thing even still alive?
Though she was no longer frozen in fear, Sloane kept herself still—the last thing she wanted was that thing to notice her. With the infolink down, she couldn’t warn Jensen; she could only hope he saw what she was doing and followed her lead. The boar swung its thick, misshapen head, testing the wind, and a milky cluster of half-formed eyes surrounded by half-healed scar tissue stared blindly out at her. As it shifted, something creaked and popped, and the wood beneath it abruptly collapsed in a shower of splinters. The boar landed with a thump that shook the trees around it, shrieking its rage in a high-pitched squeal.
“Fuck!” Sloane’s worst fears were realized as Jensen’s hoarse cry drew its attention. The boar snorted, squealed again, and that was the only warning before it charged.
Jensen was fast—his pistol was out, and he was pumping bullets into the oncoming monster—bullets that, incredibly, were flattening out on the creature’s armored skull. Sloane was faster; she’d thrown herself into motion the second she’d heard him shout, but even so, she could only hope she was fast enough. The world narrowed down to her, Jensen, and the boar. Supercharged legs demanded extra oxygen, and for a handful of seconds, her lungs were able to meet the demand. The rad counter squealed more loudly than the boar as her feet tore up the ground beneath her, freeing the poison that the earth had tried to bury, and she didn’t care if it meant just a little—more—speed—
It was almost enough. She slammed into Jensen from behind, half-pushing, half-throwing him out of the way; an instant later, she was torn away from him as white-hot pain bloomed in her side and she went flying. Something smashed into her spine and skull; she slid to the ground in a stunned heap.
Somehow, she pulled her wits back together. Somehow, she dragged herself to her feet, though her left side was a single cramp from ribs to hip and her back was one massive bruise. Her HUD screamed a dozen different warnings at her; she turned them all off and staggered to where Jensen had landed in a tangle of underbrush. “Up,” she said hoarsely, in a voice she barely recognized as her own. Jensen shook his head hard, then grabbed her outstretched hand. Her muscles shrieked as she pulled him upright—no, that was the boar. “It’s coming back,” she rasped. “Run!”
They ran.

In the midst of her grief, Ramsey discovered something gravely wrong. She had managed to grow an extra set of eyes. They looked like... like spiders' eyes. They could see in infrared vision. Not only that, but she grew fangs. Sharp ones. Her senses were heightened and she felt STRONG. Not to mention, she could stick to walls. This was freaky.
But Ramsey grew to embrace her new powers, choosing to don the mantle of *working title* to protect New York the best she could from the onslaught of supervillains plaguing the city.

Displays controlled by flexible fins and liquid droplets more versatile efficient than LED screens
The new study led by mechanical science and engineering professor Sameh Tawfick demonstrates how bendable fins and fluids can simultaneously switch between straight or bent and hot and cold by controlling the volume and temperature of tiny fluid-filled pixels. Varying the volume of fluids within the pixels can change the directions in which the flaps flip — similar to old-fashioned flip clocks — and varying the temperature allows the pixels to communicate via infrared energy. The study findings are published in the journal Science Advances. Tawfick’s interest in the interaction of elastic and capillary forces — or elasto-capillarity — started as a graduate student, spanned the basic science of hair wetting and led to his research in soft robotic displays at Illinois. “An everyday example of elasto-capillarity is what happens to our hair when we get in the shower,” Tawfick said. “When our hair gets wet, it sticks together and bends or bundles as capillary forces are applied and released when it dries out.” In the lab, the team created small boxes, or pixels, a few millimeters in size, that contain fins made of a flexible polymer that bend when the pixels are filled with fluid and drained using a system of tiny pumps. The pixels can have single or multiple fins and are arranged into arrays that form a display to convey information, Tawfick said. “We are not limited to cubic pixel boxes, either,” Tawfick said. “The fins can be arranged in various orientations to create different images, even along curved surfaces. The control is precise enough to achieve complex motions, like simulating the opening of a flower bloom.” The study reports that another feature of the new displays is the ability to send two simultaneous signals — one that can be seen with the human eye and another that can only be seen with an infrared camera. “Because we can control the temperature of these individual droplets, we can display messages that can only be seen using an infrared device,” Tawfick said, “Or we can send two different messages at the same time.” However, there are a few limitations to the new displays, Tawfick said. While building the new devices, the team found that the tiny pumps needed to control the pixel fluids were not commercially available, and the entire device is sensitive to gravity — meaning that it only works while in a horizontal position. “Once we turn the display by 90 degrees, the performance is greatly degraded, which is detrimental to applications like billboards and other signs intended for the public,” Tawfick said. “The good news is, we know that when liquid droplets become small enough, they become insensitive to gravity, like when you see a rain droplet sticking on your window and it doesn’t fall. We have found that if we use fluid droplets that are five times smaller, gravity will no longer be an issue.” The team said that because the science behind gravity’s effect on droplets is well understood, it will provide the focal point for their next application of the emerging technology. Tawfick said he is very excited to see where this technology is headed because it brings a fresh idea to a big market space of large reflective displays. “We have developed a whole new breed of displays that require minimal energy, are scaleable and even flexible enough to be placed onto curved surfaces.” Illinois researchers Jonghyun Ha, Yun Seong Kim, Chengzhang Li, Jonghyun Hwang, Sze Chai Leung and Ryan Siu also participated in this research. Using observations from the Gemini North telescope, the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility, and the Hubble Space Telescope, researchers have developed a single atmospheric model that matches observations of both planets. The model reveals that excess haze on Uranus builds up in the planet’s stagnant, sluggish atmosphere and makes it appear a lighter tone than Neptune. Neptune and Uranus have much in common — they have similar masses, sizes, and atmospheric compositions — yet their appearances are notably different. At visible wavelengths Neptune has a distinctly bluer color whereas Uranus is a pale shade of cyan. Astronomers now have an explanation for why the two planets are different colors. New research suggests that a layer of concentrated haze that exists on both planets is thicker on Uranus than a similar layer on Neptune and ‘whitens’ Uranus's appearance more than Neptune’s [1]. If there were no haze in the atmospheres of Neptune and Uranus, both would appear almost equally blue [2]. This conclusion comes from a model [3] that an international team led by Patrick Irwin, Professor of Planetary Physics at Oxford University, developed to describe aerosol layers in the atmospheres of Neptune and Uranus [4]. Previous investigations of these planets’ upper atmospheres had focused on the appearance of the atmosphere at only specific wavelengths. However, this new model, consisting of multiple atmospheric layers, matches observations from both planets across a wide range of wavelengths. The new model also includes haze particles within deeper layers that had previously been thought to contain only clouds of methane and hydrogen sulfide ices. “This is the first model to simultaneously fit observations of reflected sunlight from ultraviolet to near-infrared wavelengths,” explained Irwin, who is the lead author of a paper presenting this result in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets. “It’s also the first to explain the difference in visible color between Uranus and Neptune.” The team’s model consists of three layers of aerosols at different heights [5]. The key layer that affects the colors is the middle layer, which is a layer of haze particles (referred to in the paper as the Aerosol-2 layer) that is thicker on Uranus than on Neptune. The team suspects that, on both planets, methane ice condenses onto the particles in this layer, pulling the particles deeper into the atmosphere in a shower of methane snow. Because Neptune has a more active, turbulent atmosphere than Uranus does, the team believes Neptune’s atmosphere is more efficient at churning up methane particles into the haze layer and producing this snow. This removes more of the haze and keeps Neptune’s haze layer thinner than it is on Uranus, meaning the blue color of Neptune looks stronger. “We hoped that developing this model would help us understand clouds and hazes in the ice giant atmospheres,” commented Mike Wong, an astronomer at the University of California, Berkeley, and a member of the team behind this result. “Explaining the difference in color between Uranus and Neptune was an unexpected bonus!” To create this model, Irwin’s team analyzed a set of observations of the planets encompassing ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared wavelengths (from 0.3 to 2.5 micrometers) taken with the Near-Infrared Integral Field Spectrometer (NIFS) on the Gemini North telescope near the summit of Maunakea in Hawai‘i — which is part of the international Gemini Observatory, a Program of NSF’s NOIRLab — as well as archival data from the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility, also located in Hawai‘i, and the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. The NIFS instrument on Gemini North was particularly important to this result as it is able to provide spectra — measurements of how bright an object is at different wavelengths — for every point in its field of view. This provided the team with detailed measurements of how reflective both planets’ atmospheres are across both the full disk of the planet and across a range of near-infrared wavelengths. “The Gemini observatories continue to deliver new insights into the nature of our planetary neighbors,” said Martin Still, Gemini Program Officer at the National Science Foundation. “In this experiment, Gemini North provided a component within a suite of ground- and space-based facilities critical to the detection and characterization of atmospheric hazes.” The model also helps explain the dark spots that are occasionally visible on Neptune and less commonly detected on Uranus. While astronomers were already aware of the presence of dark spots in the atmospheres of both planets, they didn’t know which aerosol layer was causing these dark spots or why the aerosols at those layers were less reflective. The team’s research sheds light on these questions by showing that a darkening of the deepest layer of their model would produce dark spots similar to those seen on Neptune and perhaps Uranus. Notes [1] This whitening effect is similar to how clouds in exoplanet atmospheres dull or ‘flatten’ features in the spectra of exoplanets. [2] The red colors of the sunlight scattered from the haze and air molecules are more absorbed by methane molecules in the atmosphere of the planets. This process — referred to as Rayleigh scattering — is what makes skies blue here on Earth (though in Earth’s atmosphere sunlight is mostly scattered by nitrogen molecules rather than hydrogen molecules). Rayleigh scattering occurs predominantly at shorter, bluer wavelengths. [3] An aerosol is a suspension of fine droplets or particles in a gas. Common examples on Earth include mist, soot, smoke, and fog. On Neptune and Uranus, particles produced by sunlight interacting with elements in the atmosphere (photochemical reactions) are responsible for aerosol hazes in these planets’ atmospheres. [4] A scientific model is a computational tool used by scientists to test predictions about a phenomena that would be impossible to do in the real world. [5] The deepest layer (referred to in the paper as the Aerosol-1 layer) is thick and is composed of a mixture of hydrogen sulfide ice and particles produced by the interaction of the planets’ atmospheres with sunlight. The final vpet i bought in this batch! This is a be-bit, a lil vpet that came out in italy when I was a lil Italian kid and afaik ONLY in italy.
It doesn't seem to be a rebranding of the giga pet, but i don't know much about that.
Anyway when I was a kid Tamagotchi Connection and be-bit came out at the same time, and both had an infrared connection with other devices that you could use to pair up your little pet and have it play and have babies with your friend's vpet
So there were a lot of debates wether Tamagotchi or be-bit was better
I didn't have any of those when I was a kid, but the consensus with my school friends was that the Tamagotchi was better. 
I've owned this thing for 3 minutes and i already somewhat agree XD and i only have a Tamagotchi gen 2, not a connection
The cool thing is that the be-bit, though it only has a single species per device - this one is the kitten model- apparently can pair and create different species with other be-bits????? I have no idea if i can do it without another be-bit tho, so my little kitty may stay single
Also there are A LOT of things you can do and tabs to look for. Health, hunger, happiness, games, shower, battle (?!)
Unfortunately I don't like the buttons so far. They're not very comfortable and responsive and they seem to be in a different order than the a c b of Digimon

Major Spoiler Warning: Villain Plot Reveal, and Monsters Revealed from Chapter 103 in the game
Trigger Warning: This chapter has been described as ‘gruesome’, and ‘messed up’ by some beta readers for its disturbing imagery.
The King stood at the edge of the well, a deep hole a football field in diameter surrounded by walls of jagged rock cut into the mountain by wind and rain. He and his engineers wore full-body suits made of a synthetic material that could withstand the most corrosive substances. White spiderweb filaments that crawled up from this hole like mold, spilled over the edge and crept over the whole area, oozed a milky noxious liquid that dissolved organic material. Trees dropped their leaves, and grass withered. It grew over animals who came in contact with it and couldn’t escape until they were cocooned and dissolved into blackened husks.
The underground river at the bottom of the well should have been devoid of life. It was an ancient lava tube that collected water that seeped through the porous ground. This river also came in contact with the active volcanic activity in places, warming it like a hot spring. The warmth and the nutrients provided by the volcano made it the perfect nursery for growing dragonkind.
 The Executive Department of Hydra had dumped powerful poisons into the water not a day ago in an attempt to destroy that dragonkin. Yet the sonar, the infrared and the seismic instruments of The King’s engineers indicated that something very large was breathing down there. It was moving. It had a heartbeat. The temperature of the water had gradually heated to boiling. The stench was overpowering.
The King looked down at the small bundle in his arms.  His voice held a great fondness. “Do you smell it little one? Oh yes, the smell of a new birth!”
The baby looked up at him with calm innocence. His skin was a soft chocolate brown, his eyes a fiery red. His dark hair curled on his head. 
From the day Ruri Kazama failed to capture the Empress Hybrid, The King knew he had a problem on his hands. He depended on Ruri being under his complete control from beginning to end to resurrect the god. Once he realized that there was someone to rival him, someone who could break through his woodblock hypnosis, he got to work on a replacement.
Using the Empress’s egg cells he’d purchased from the Comemnus Corporation and the sperm harvested from Ruri Kazama, he had created this replacement. Something this tiny and helpless did not need to be controlled.
“The god has awakened... now to pay our respects.” He took a razor blade and pierced the baby’s hand. The baby’s face twisted in a grimace and his face turned red. He began to cry and scream. It gave the King a shiver of joy to hear it.
He held the baby’s hand over the expanse and let the blood run down his little fingers and sprinkle into the well.
“Sonar detects a large object incoming!” The members of the Devil Clan stepped back from the edge of the abyss.
“Let us welcome our new god!”
The water underneath spawned a whirlpool as a great creature swam to the surface, drawn by the scent of the baby’s blood.
“Let’s see how strong it is! Start the turbines!” The King ordered.
The engineering crew turned to their control and command center. At the bottom of the well, a turbine spun with such great force that even a submarine would not be able to resist the pull. 
The beast in the water in the water ignored it, continuing upwards, without slowing down.
“Amazing! Amazing!” The King danced with joy, swaying, pacing and gesturing erratically
The engineering crew, meanwhile, exchanged glances as they looked over the creature’s quickening vital signs and unstoppable power. Perhaps they were making a mistake.
“Begin the second test!”
The second test involved a volley of explosives dropped into the well that sank down and  detonated, surrounding the beast with fire. But again, the sonar screen indicated that the dragon was unaffected. It quickened its rise to the surface! “The target is accelerating!” An engineer looked over his shoulder at the well.
“Test number three!”
They closed twelve thick reinforced gates above the creature. A net of nanofibers stretched over each of them made out of threads strong enough to carry the Trieste. The beast not only broke through the gates but began breaking through the nets, stretching and sawing through the powerful fibers!
The engineering crew scrambled to safety. “It’s coming to the surface! Take cover!”
Only the King stayed calm. He held the crying baby over the well. The beast broke the surface, shooting completely out of the water and clinging to the sides of the chasm by what at first appeared to be tentacles. They realized, once the pairs of bright glowing eyes opened on each appendage, that they were not tentacles but multiple heads cleaning to the rock. 
Eight heads.
Four cannons surrounding the chasm pointed down into the well and exploded into deafening fire, each round full of anesthetic drugs. But that couldn’t slow down the beast clinging and hissing on the wall.
The integrity of the well itself began to falter. The struts holding it open collapsed down into the dark.  “Throw down more nets!” The chief engineer roared. “Capture it!” 
The King chuckled. He knew that at full power, this creature was beyond capture. He would need to weaken it further. Against the nets, against the cannon fire, it used its eight heads like arms to climb up. It leveraged a sharp sickle on its tail to gain stability on the slippery rock. Soon, it would be completely free.
The King opened his hands.
The baby fell screaming down into the dark. He didn’t see the child hit the boiling water, but now the river was full of the blood of the god. He trusted in a rapid transformation.
“We’re detecting another heartbeat! A new energy signal!”
The awed cries of the engineering department sang like a chorus in the King’s ears. An oblong pale shape levitated from the water. The floating egg ascended, cracking and splitting. Finally, it shattered into glass-like fragments. Beautiful white and gold wings spread into the cavern. Even though the baby was still a baby, the wingspan appeared to stretch the length of a bus.
Two of the dragon's eight heads turned to look. Tiny motes of light snowed down toward the wings, being absorbed into the feathers until they turned an angry glowing red. They stretched and elongated into a multitude of flaming whip-like tendrils.
The eight headed dragon struggled to continue its climb and managed to just reach above the lip of the well when bright red-hot tendrils of energy surged upward. They whipsawed against the flesh of the newly awakened dragon, tearing off bloody strips of quivering muscle. One head was taken off completely, spraying a spiral of blood back into the depths of the well.
The dragon roared and wailed in despair,  as though begging for the torment to stop.
The King folded his hands behind his back. So this was the power of the offspring of Emperors. Even in infancy, not even the gods could challenge it.
The eight headed dragon, weakened and in pain, relinquished its grip on the wall. It fell to the bottom of the well. It hit the water, sending up a splash reaching meters high.
The child’s wings lifted above the opening. It soared to his father, mewling, seeking comfort. The wings stretched up into the sky as it reached down for him. The King held up his arms and cradled the baby. The sheer weight of the wings should have flattened the King, but these creatures did not follow the simple laws of physics.
The engineering team rushed to dump liquid nitrogen into the well. Dragons were reptiles and the cold temperature put it into a stupor. It was unable to move or fight any longer. They’d done it.
They’d captured a god.
The King paced back and forth. Using more of the nanofiber nets, they lifted the half frozen monster out of the well. Cranes lowered car-sized buzzsaws to cut into the creature. Heavy machinery lifted the severed parts away. Blood poured from the helpless dragon, painting the white filaments in red, staining everyone in the work area crimson.
This eight headed creature actually wasn’t the White King. It had only inherited the White King’s remnants.  The Devil Clan worked to dismantle it with uncharacteristic joy. Finally, they would ascend above the years of torment and injustice and become more powerful than anything they ever dreamed. Some of them openly wept.
The creature was completely subdued. It was still conscious but unable to move as it was skinned and one by one its heads were severed until the last one was gone and it died in truth.
The King glanced up at the sky, understanding he was on a strict schedule. The Sword of Damocles edged ever closer. The satellite weapon would descend and turn this place into an inferno. He would have to contain the sacred remnants and leave this place.
Eventually, they reached the heart of the dragon. The massive organ slid out of the chest with a suction noise and a shower of blood. It was translucent like a gem and inside the gem, something was wriggling.
The King panted with urgency “Cut it open! That’s it! The Sacred Skeleton!” 
The skeleton wasn’t bone at all, but a living parasite, white, like a mutated embryo with a tail like a flexible spine. about the size of an orange with a single eye like spot at the tip.
The saws cut into the heart. The liquid inside poured out, taking the sacred parasite with it. As soon as the white worm emerged, it was met with a shower of liquid nitrogen. 
“How beautiful.” The King is still cradling his now sleeping ‘son’ in one arm. “See… once our host arrives… I will be sure you are the first to taste the true power of the White King.”
They used a strong vacuum to suck the creature into a glass canister for storage to prevent it from entering another creature.
The rest of the Devil clan were confused. Finally someone spoke up. “How can something like this make us into full blood dragons?”
“We will need a host. Once the parasite finds the host... it is the blood of the host that will evolve you.”
A beam of light suddenly illuminated the mountain side. A large helicopter descended rapidly from the sky, its downdraft sweeping the area.
The King began to laugh. “And now our host is here!”

Many of us “do astronomy”. Whether you just stand in your backyard this summer and go looking for planets, or you venture out to a dark sky destination to see a comet or catch some shooting stars, the terms “astronomer” and “stargazer” often go hand-in-hand. 
The pandemic has gotten a lot of us into our backyards looking up. This rare planetary event has also given some a new perspective on our global community. 
The night sky connects all humans wherever they are, but how many of us ever discover something new about what’s out there? Or even have an original thought about the enormity above us each night? 
In “The Last Stargazers: The Enduring Story of Astronomy’s Vanishing Explorers,” University of Washington astronomy professor Emily Levesque shares the tales of modern-day stargazers, the small band of 50,000 or so professional astronomers around the world that get to use humanity’s greatest telescopes on the high altitude peaks such as Mauna Kea in Hawaii, Cerro Paranal in Chile and Roque de los Muchachos in the Canary Islands. 
It sounds impossibly romantic. Is it? 
“If somebody wanted to come watch an astronomer work at night I think they’d be deeply disappointed,” said Levesque. “We’re not out gazing at the stars and we’re not even sitting out at the telescope—we’re in a lit room in a different part of the telescope building.”

What do astronomers do?
The title of Levesque’s book reflects the engaging text’s many stories about discoveries made at mountaintop observatories, but in modern terms, it’s a little ironic because professional astronomers don’t do all that much observing with their own eyes.
“People imagine an astronomer to be somebody hunkered down at a telescope, but they would be surprised at the adventures we have, and the sheer variety of things that we do for our job,” said Levesque. “But we don’t look through eyepieces anymore. In terms of the technology involved—from cameras to advanced detectors—the way we do astronomy is so surprising to some people.” 
However, don’t think that astronomers are stony-faced when they’re sat in front of a computer screen displaying something spectacular. “Our responses to seeing something captured by a powerful telescope are the same as the responses of amateurs looking at Saturn for the first time,” said Levesque, who’s incredibly enthusiast about astronomy. “We know all the science behind what we’re looking at, but we react in the same way as anyone enjoying looking at the night sky.”

Coping with cloud
Anyone who’s ever made a plan to look at the night sky has a nemesis; cloud.
That’s why the planet’s big telescopes are on mountaintops above the clouds. That’s the theory. The reality is that weather happens, and so does engineering. On the big telescopes that means only about 300 observing nights per year. So what happens if you get valuable “telescope time,” get yourself up the mountain for three nights, and the clouds come in?
Not much. “It’s all or nothing—you can get a string of good weather and a working telescope, or cloud and a broken instrument,” said Levesque. If it’s the latter, tough luck.
“You just come home and you have to apply again, and you don’t get a special little star on your proposal saying she got clouded out—you have to go back and take your chances again, just like anyone else,” said Levesque.

How astronomers get time on a telescope
Since telescope time is scheduled six months in advance at most observatories—and typically astronomers wait for a year to be assigned a slot—a single cloud or one windy night can make a huge difference to astronomical research plans. “The stakes are high—you really hope for good weather, you really hope nothing goes wrong, and you really hope you don’t make any mistakes, because the time is so precious,” said Levesque.
Depending on what object they need to observe, astronomers can request a specific day or even hour (perhaps for an asteroid occultation), a season (say, anytime between November and May for observing Betelgeuse), and whether they require complete darkness or are happy with a full moon-lit night.
Sometimes astronomer will request to observe an object at a specific time to coincide with precisely when Hubble will be looking at it, so that data can be compared.

NASA’s ‘flying telescope’
So astronomers almost never look though telescopes, but they always hang out on mountain tops, right?
Well, no, not always. The Mauna Kea Observatories (MKO) in Hawaiʻi are at 13,803 ft./4,207 meters above sea level, but that’s not always enough.
Some telescopes fly, so astronomers have to sometimes become “stratonauts.”
Cue Levesque’s adventures in NASA’s “flying observatory,” the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA).
Having written a couple of times recently about studies of Betelgeuse and Pluto from the specially-equipped Boeing 747SP aircraft (modified to carry a 2.7-meter/106-inch reflecting telescope), this part of the book particularly engaged me. Levesque recounts her evening with the “stratonauts” who operate SOFIA with incredible enthusiasm (a theme throughout the book).
As is the way with astronomers, she also got to see something truly exquisite.
“I was flying on that telescope as an astronomer and we were down in the southern hemisphere,” said Levesque. “I saw the southern aurora from the cockpit of the plane flying—the first time I’ve ever seen the aurora.”
“Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined I would be in that place.” 
However, astronomical opportunities for such incredible experiences could be on the wane.

The future of professional astronomy
Professional astronomy is no longer about looking through telescopes or hanging about in freezing temperatures. Levesque has had many experiences of how astronomy is done now—mentioning the smell of engine grease and coffee as two dominant themes—but the discipline’s next chapter seems far less exciting. 
In the future will all telescopes be controlled remotely? Will astronomy be an office-based vocation?
“We’ve certainly seen a drift toward telescopes being operated remotely,” said Levesque. “One of the telescopes that I spend a lot of time using now is the Apache Point Observatory 3.5 meter telescope, which I can operate from my laptop on my couch.”
Remote control astronomy
Many are now operated using queue-based scheduling; an astronomer send instructions to the telescope ahead of time, it makes observations when the conditions are right, and the data arrives in the astronomer’s inbox.
“We will see many more telescopes run that way,” said Levesque. However, there is still a telescope operator at the telescope itself, and there are still engineers and staff on site taking care of the telescope. It’s just that the astronomy is increasingly being done remotely.
“I don’t think we’ll ever truly remove the idea of people at telescopes, except in the case of robotic telescopes, which are amazing at some things, but can’t do some things,” said Levesque. “The variety of questions we’re trying to answer with telescopes means that we’re probably always going to demand human participation at some level.”

The last stargazers?
So are astronomers still stargazers?
Levesque tells a story about what astronomers do before an observing session at most mountaintop observatories. “When we watch the sunset before an observing session we pretend we’re checking to see how clear the sky is looking,” said Levesque.
“It’s a wonderful chance to enjoy the planet, enjoy the observatory, get a moment of silence and see our nearest star doing something beautiful from the edge of the world.”

Chat glanced between his mother and his own tortured reflection in the glass of the coffin- no, not a coffin– the chamber his father had installed down here for her. “She’s been here the whole time?” he asked, his claws reaching out delicately to press against the transparent barrier separating them.
“I couldn’t risk a hospital. If they tried to help, they might have made things worse. Magic and medicine don’t work well together.”
Chat let his hand fall and turned to face the man, a blazing hatred, glowing in his cat-like eyes. “So, you let us all think she might be dead out there somewhere instead?”
“I had a lead on how to make her well again. I didn’t expect to take so long to track it down.” He took his gaze from the disgruntled teenager in front of him and looked down to where his fingers had drifted to fidget with his cravat. “And then I found that it was just another lead to the final solution.”
“The Miraculous.” Chat glanced down at the ring on his finger, cupping his free hand over it as he pulled it in towards his chest protectively. “You think they can make her well again.”
“They can. If the Ladybug earrings are paired with your ring, the one who holds them both can ask for any wish. There are no restrictions on what they can accomplish.”
“What about the kwami’s?” Chat asked with a raised eyebrow, his head tilting inquisitively, “What happens to them?”
“What makes you think anything would happen to them?” Gabriel asked in confusion.
“There’s always a price with this stuff.” Chat’s thoughts drifted back to the fridge in his room here at the mansion, and to the overwhelming amount of cheese he had packed into the Dupain-Chengs fridge without a single complaint from them. “The kwami’s need to eat to maintain enough energy for a normal transformation. But a wish would take far more energy than usual.”
Plagg had often told him that he had to eat to survive while he was active, even if he was immortal by most standards. Despite his kwami’s greedy tendencies, Adrien was inclined to believe he had only ever exaggerated that fact in order to gain more Camembert, but never outright lied about it. He wondered what Plagg would tell him about this wish business if he asked, but he hadn’t brought any of the foul stuff with him –and he really didn’t like the idea of being untransformed and helpless around his f-around Gabriel just so he could get advice from the little creature who never left his side.
“Wait a minute,” he said, expression hardening again, “Where’s your kwami? What do they have to say about all of this?”
Gabriel’s mouth narrowed into a thin line, his hands slipping behind his back in a position Chat recognised as meaning he was irritated, and that the discussion was ending - on his own terms.
“Nooroo cannot intentionally show himself to anyone except for me. I have also ordered him not to try to communicate with anyone else either. Surely you’ve given your own kwami some kind of similar order?”
“He’s a person!” Chat shouted, “I ask him to stay out of sight, but I don’t own him! I don’t order him around. Anyone who does…”
He’d never thought he was capable of outright hating someone before, especially his own flesh and blood, but Adrien was quickly coming to a horrifying discovery he could no longer wilfully ignore.
“You’re a monster,” he said, unable to help himself from voicing it aloud, “You don’t care about anyone except yourself and what you want. This isn’t about mom! It’s never been about mom! It’s about the fact that you want mom to come back. If you suddenly wanted something else more, you’d leave her like this forever!”
“Adrien-”
“No! You listen here. I will never, never give you my ring. And I’ll never let you hurt my Lady.”
“She’s just a girl Adrien!” Gabriel snarled, lurching towards him so quickly Chat had to leap on top of his mother’s chamber to avoid him, “Start thinking about your family instead of your hormones for a change!”
The boy hissed in response, pure cat-like instincts reacting to the threat before him and watched as the last of the reason left Gabriel’s eyes, as the man realised there was no way to make his son side with him.
“Nooroo, Dark Wings Rise!”
Drawing a sabre from his cane, Hawkmoth began to advance on Chat’s perch atop the chamber, a cold indifference to him on his masked face. The atmosphere was thick and electric, both super-powered beings looking for an opening and waiting for the other to strike.
 The sound of the doorbell echoed throughout the room.
 Chat’s expression softened into one of bemused confusion as his eyes flitted around the room, looking for the source of the noise down here. The bell rang again three times in quick succession as he spotted the wall mounted speaker behind him, next to the large tinted window.
Chat’s jaw dropped open in disbelief. The advanced intercom system Gabriel had ordered for his home was a needlessly complex one, which used infrared to determine where those in the mansion were and played the doorbell sound from the speakers closest to them. It was supposed to be so that Gabriel could use the security system to mark himself as busy when Nathalie was around to deal with distractions for him, but continue to be alerted when she went home for the night.
“You installed that down here!?” Chat said bewilderingly.
Glaring at the gobsmacked hero carefully, Hawkmoth backed off a little to access a panel Chat hadn’t noticed before, tapping away at hidden controls and glancing between it and the boy every few seconds as the doorbell continued to noisily distort the previous silence uncomfortably.
“Quiet! Unless you want to put the person at the door into unnecessary danger.” The villain pressed one of the buttons on the console. “Yes?” he said, looking at something on the screen in front of him that Chat couldn’t see from his current angle.
“Oh hello!” said a familiar voice and green eyes widened in surprise and worry for the small Chinese woman who should not have been anywhere near here right now. “Maybe you remember me, I’m Marinette’s mother - Sabine. I hope you can help me. Marinette’s gone missing and I was wondering if you or Adrien have seen her?”
“No, we have not,” he snapped curtly, “I’m afraid I’m very busy right now so-”
His voice cut off suddenly as a large man appeared out of the shadows of the room to his right and tackled him off his feet. Despite his size, Tom Dupain was easily thrown across the room as Hawkmoth regained his senses almost immediately and Chat Noir found himself jumping down from his spot to stand in front of the large man protectively, Hawkmoth brandishing his sabre at them.
Marinette’s parents had come to help; to try to save him. It was insanely foolish. Hawkmoth was too powerful with his super-strength and his natural fencing skills to rely on. But still, they had been worried enough to race straight in without fretting about their own well-being. They didn’t care if they could help or not; they just knew they had to try.
He might have let out a laugh of joy – if it hadn’t been the worst time ever. Now not only did he have to try and take down his f- this man, this villain, he had to do it whilst also protecting his sort-of adoptive parents. His found family.
“Is this who you’ve been staying with?” Hawkmoth spat, “A baker and his family? You stupid child, did you really think they could protect-”
For the second time in the space of a few minutes, Hawkmoth was cut off abruptly as Ladybug burst through the tinted glass panel behind where his mother lay, a shower of glass shards erupting into the room as she swung her yo-yo directly at the villain’s head.
