"Grahalll Ingels's original cover art for Saddle Justice No. 5 (March-April 1949), the hand-colored silverprint of the cover of Saddle Justice No. 5, done as a guide to show how the colors should appear, along with the final, printed cover. Comic art was always produced in several steps. The original art was done as black-and-white line art, at twice the size it would be printed. A reduced, half-sized print was made of this art, which was then hand colored, with additional notations to the engravers. Working with this, the engraver would prepare the four-color plates that would be used to print the actual comic book. Although this was a mechanical process, engravers at the tin1e could produce some absolutely beautiful results, while using the li1nited palette of colors dictated by the process itself. "
