Te Fiti - Pre-Colonial Tagalog Style

i didn’t take very many photos of my te fiti cosplay at silicon valley comic con!!! i was too busy tripping over my cloak and malong, lmfao. the first picture is me and my sister as moana.

i also took photos with THIS AMAZING NATIVE-STYLED CAPTAIN AMERICA COSPLAYER (if you know his handle or his real name, please say so!) and also JASON MOMOA HIMSELF.

then, a friendly dog i met in a cafe, and also a very nice snake.

and also detail shots because i did not realize HOW MUCH THE CLOAK WOULD HIDE.

i have explained the main points of symbolism under the cut (sorry mobile users!!):

- to replace the haku lei te fiti wears, i put in a beaded headband as those are more common among filipino indigenous groups. this headband is made of green silk decorated with orange blossoms, oranges, and orange thorns. in some groups on the northern island of the philippines, luzon, which is where my people the taga-ilog originated, orange trees are believed to ward off evil spirits. the thorns are also traditionally used as tattoo needles.

- the tattoos are not finished, but they contain symbols of fertility or protection, nine stars representing the pleiades (a common sign of the start of the planting season), te fiti’s spiral, and the tigmamanukan bird who was a sacred messenger of bathala, the creator god of the tagalogs.

- in pre-colonial and existing indigenous filipino tribes, the use of gold was a sign of spirituality instead of a symbol of wealth. heirloom gold was the most prized jewelry and passed down through generations as it would allow one’s ancestors to recognize them.

- the earrings are based off the b’laan style of earrings in the south, but extremely lengthened. along with the matching strands on the headband, they symbolize the vines of te fiti’s hair.

- the spiral was changed to a snake necklace with the spiral on my left side and the heart of te fiti replaced with a snake head. snakes are very positive symbols of health, fertility, and youth. i will, however, remake this necklace as the beads don’t lay quite right on the frame.

- the tube top was mainly a concession to modern public decency laws. actual tagalog women wore no shirts as their full sleeves and collars of tattoos counted as clothing. on the left side it is decorated with eye motifs which are symbols of protection. the other side is bordered with flame motifs, which i made up for this costume to symbolize volcanos and therefore te ka.

- throughout the costume i decided to have a theme of duality or contrast, particularly in the belt and the gold bracelets. in most filipino folklore, the right side of the body symbolized masculinity, which i chose to mean te ka, and the left side symbolized femininity, so the left side became the te fiti side. these are indian bangles which i wore on my right arm to symbolically cover up the te ka tattoos (which i didn’t actually have time to draw on). my left arm had only my tattoos (and, in a poor case of judgment, the convention wristband).

- the belt and malong contain the three colors of royalty across the major regions--red for the Visayan islands, blue for Luzon, and yellow for Mindanao. the yellow with blue trim also symbolizes the beach and the ocean. the symbols are, from left to right: the same sacred bird of bathala in my tattoos, the tigmamanukan, a balete or banyan tree which houses spirits (good ancestors or evil demons, depending on the region), the ling-ling-o which is a symbol of life, a volcano which across the islands are revered as houses of the gods or ancestors, and a crocodile mouth as they are both feared and revered as children of dragons.

- the cloak/blanket is a symbol of nobility as well. generally it is worn by men, but gender roles were much more flexible in pre-colonial times, and even in existing indigenous groups it’s not uncommon for unisex garments. i used henna to paint leaves containing tattoo symbols of fertility. when i have more time i will finish the symbols in the smaller columns which are repeating symbols of fertility. on my back is another tree of life/balete tree. along the panels which reach the ground, i put stylized fish, again to symbolize the ocean.

¿Qué es un mordedor y para qué sirve?

Al momento en el que inicia el proceso de salir los primeros dientes, es importante comprar un mordedor. Estos son objetos de goma o bien, de un plástico blando. Están diseñados específicamente para que tu bebé lo muerda y tenga alivio en sus encías hinchadas. La mayoría de los mordedores tienen forma redonda en el mango, para facilitar el acto de sujetar y tu bebé pueda cogerlo con una o ambas manos.

Siempre que adquieras un mordedor hay que asegurarse que es libre de BPA (bisfenol A) y los materiales sean higiénicos. Antes del primer uso conviene esterilizarlo, basta con hervirlo unos minutos. Deberás de estar siempre atenta por si el mordedor cae al suelo y éste está sucio, siempre es recomendable adquirir un par de ellos por si esto sucede.

La mayoría vienen con un seguro para evitar atragantamientos y evitar riesgos para tu bebé. En algunos casos trae una pinza para sujetarlo a la ropa por el otro extremo.

Edad recomendada para utilizar un mordedor

Es importante entender que a los bebés le empiezan a salir los dientes en diferentes tiempos. Comúnmente salen de primero los incisivos alrededor de los cinco y seis meses. Antes de que salgan por completo, empezarán a molestarle las encías. Determinar este proceso es sencillo, tu bebé presentará hinchazón en las encías y seguramente tendrá algunos llantos relacionados al malestar.

En este momento es recomendable adquirir el mordedor. Instintivamente tu bebé se llevará todo lo que pueda a la boca buscando aliviarse. Debes de comenzar con un mordedor de goma, ya que será más suave porque va dirigido específicamente para las encías. Cuando tenga alrededor del año, se inicia la salida de los molares. Esto será un poco más molesto para tu bebé pero, con el mismo mordedor de goma mejor si se enfría previamente se aliviará.

El hecho de colocar unos minutos el mordedor en el congelador, podrá desinflamar un poco el hinchazón. Y por último, la tercera etapa. Esta viene alrededor del año y medio. Tendrá la completa salida de los dientes que faltan. En este punto puedes optar por un mordedor más duro como los de plástico. Algunos vienen con relieve para hacer del alivio más rápido.

Tipos de mordedores para tu bebé

Mordedor de goma

Este es el más recomendado para utilizarlo por primera vez. Es más parecido a un chupete en realidad, tiene un mango en forma de anillo y al otro extremo tiene la base para morder. Tiene una textura en algunos casos ligeramente rugosa, pero con la finalidad de proporcionar más alivio. Tampoco será muy duro ya que el bebé pudiera hacerse daño. Mordedor para congelar

este es muy parecido al anterior, con la diferencia es que dentro del mordedor contiene un líquido especial para congelar, más parecido a un gel. Este modelo es muy popular, puesto que se mantiene frío un buen rato. Perfecto para desinflamar y prolongar más tiempo el alivio. Debes de tener en cuenta, el hecho de que pueda ser algo pesado para tu bebé al estar congelado. Si es así, te recomendamos esperar al octavo mes para que lo pueda sostener con más facilidad. Dispone de dos versiones anteriores en un solo accesorio. Con la finalidad de adaptarse a todas las fases que tendrá tu bebé mientras le salen sus primeros dientes. Tiene diseño ergonómico, es de goma y puedes congelarlo o no. Funciona de ambas maneras.
