Sidney Poitier was a pioneering actor and activist, whose career shattered barriers for what Black Americans could represent and achieve in Hollywood. Alongside so many notable accomplishments, he is remembered for being the first Black actor to be nominated for and WIN the Oscar for Best Actor. No stranger to being the “first” — Poitier’s life and legacy is certainly Black History.

Sally Field's Emotional Tribute to Robin Williams at SAG Awards Leaves Viewers in Tears

The 29th Annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards ceremony was held virtually on February 27, 2023. During the "In Memoriam" segment of the show, actress Sally Field paid tribute to her former co-star Robin Williams, who passed away in 2014. Field reminisced about the time she spent working with Williams on the set of the 1993 movie "Mrs. Doubtfire." She described him as a kind and generous person who was always making others laugh. Field also mentioned that Williams was a dedicated actor who took his craft seriously. Field ended her tribute by stating that Williams is still missed by everyone who knew him, and that his legacy lives on through his work and the impact he had on those who knew him. The SAG Awards ceremony is an annual event that honors outstanding performances in film and television by members of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA). The ceremony features awards in a variety of categories, including individual performances, ensemble casts, and stunt performers. He saw my drawing of Poitier and kindly told me about his relation to the great actor. He was named after the great Sidney, and attests to have been inspired by him since he was very young. 𝗔𝗶𝗿 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗩𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗻 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻 Born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1937, Morgan Freeman was the youngest of five children. His parents had left the South to find work in Chicago. Until the age of six, Freeman lived with his grandmother in Mississippi. After his parents separated, Freeman moved to Greenwood, Mississippi, with his mother. There Freeman frequently attended the local movie theater and became a fan of actors like #GaryCooper and #SidneyPoitier. He frequently saw war movies, which inspired his interest in becoming a pilot. In school, Freeman acted in several school plays and competitions, often taking leading roles and winning awards. After graduating high school in 1955, Freeman turned down a drama scholarship to Jackson State University to enlist in the #AirForce. After basic training, Freeman worked as a radar technician for more than a year before training as a pilot. When he did start training to fly, he realized that it was not right for him and he could not remain in the military. He received an honorable discharge as an airman first class in 1959.
