DAMANI: An Underground Eulogy

Chicago - town founded in 1833, named from a Canadian French form of the Fox (Algonquian) word, /sheka:ko:heki/ meaning "place of the wild onion”.

Arnell Harris was onion-like in his representation of our beloved Windy City. A man of many passions, talents, and gifts, there seemed to be infinite layers to his persona. He effortlessly vacillated between creative worlds of art, color, music, (sub)culture, profession, etc.

A graduate of St. Ignatius College Prep (SICP), it’s no strange fiction that the social and intellectually-inclined Arnell was formally educated by the “Jesuits” - a collective of Paris-based clergy known for radical educational initiatives and culture-based “ministries”. Significant players in the colonization of First Nations in the Chicago area, the Jesuits established SICP in 1869 to extend their efforts to the Irish immigrant community. African-Americans, like Arnell, began attending Ignatius in the late 1930’s.

In my opinion, Arnell embodied much of what the (Black/Brown) Ignatius diaspora was and continues to be - a determined family of artists, scholars, and professionals driven by excellence toward Black/Brown equality. Personally, he expanded my social awareness by encouraging me to socialize beyond my comfort zone. This “nudge” put me on the pathway to high artistry, spiritual solidarity, ethnocultural agility, and relentless creative resistance.

I haven’t seen or spoken to Arnell for well over 20 years, but his departure impacted me as if it were yesterday. It’s been hard. I feel like an onion that just had a root unexpectedly ripped from its base. I’ll continue to grow and develop more layers, but part of the blueprint is definitely Arnell’s. The good news is that he will replant that root right where it belongs.

He attended and graduated from Chicago-Kent College of Law (December 2005), School of the Art Institute of Chicago, MFA (May 1999), University of Illinois-Champaign-Urbana, BFA (January 1997), and St Ignatius College Prep.

Professor at Malcom X College, Harold Washington College, and Kennedy King College. Teacher at NKO Charter. Mentored the Chavez School Choir. State's Attorney, Illinois.
