Instead, the family was subjected to heckling and intimidation – influential members of the village, egged on by right-wing leaders had decided to take advantage of their vulnerability. They decreed that Shyamlal’s funeral would be allowed in the village on one condition: the family had to convert from Christianity to Hinduism and conduct the last rites according to Hindu rituals.
...
The grieving family were mobbed by right-wing supporters who told them they had no access to the cemetery in the village where the burials have been happening for all these years. “We are being targeted only because we chose to follow a particular faith. But you can follow whatever religion you want to follow. I have read that in the news,” says Sukmiti.
...
What’s more, “they wouldn’t even let us bury Shyamlal in our backyard,” she adds. “That’s where we had buried his grandmother. We thought the two could rest next to each other. But we were told we couldn’t do it because we stood up to them and refused to convert.”
...
Right-wing groups are targeting families that have lost their loved ones. One gram sabha even passed a resolution which disallowed cremation for the people following Christianity within the boundary of the village. Shyamlal’s last rites seemed like mere logistics. It was rushed through. “It felt like we didn’t send him off properly,” says the family.
...
“This is largely a post-covid phenomenon,” says Benjamin. “Before that, the right-wingers attempted to convert Christians to Hinduism using various methods, but death was respected by and large. Sadly, not anymore.”
...
The family stood its ground. Nag insisted on not giving into majoritarian pressure. “We own a three-acre farmland and what we do on it is our business,” he says. “We decided to bury her over there. We wouldn’t have it any other way.” The members of the Bajrang Dal eventually backed down and the burial went through without further disruptions. Even then, people were distracted, looking out for one while giving Aayati a respectable send-off. “Is it too much to expect peace while conducting last rites?” he asks. “Yes, we won that battle. But we don’t want our children growing up in this atmosphere. Even the village heads didn’t stand by us.”
...
The marginalisation of tribal Christians has been going on. “We aren’t allowed to fetch water from the common well in the village anymore,” Kosha says. “We have to do it clandestinely.”
Back in Arracote, Sukmiti says the family were not allowed to go to a wedding in a neighbouring village because it was a Christian family getting married: “The family had to throw away the food they had prepared for the guests because nobody could reach there.”
Despite the Constitution (Article 25) stating that “Freedom of conscience and free profession, practice and propagation of religion,” tribal Christians are facing hostility and intimidation.
“The situation is such that when someone dies in a Christian family, our first reaction is fear and logistics, not grief. What sort of death is this?” she says.

Lyrics:
No, no, no, no, don't phunk with my heart
Yeah
No, no, no, no, don't phunk with my heart
I wonder if I take you home
Would you still be in love, baby (love, love)
In love baby (love, love)
I wonder if I take you home
Would you still be in love, baby (love, love)
In love baby (love, love)
Girl, you know you got me, got me
With your pistol shot me, shot me
And I'm here helplessly
In love and nothing can stop me
It can't stop me once I started
Can't return me once you bought it
I'm coming baby, don't got it (don't make me wait)
So let's be about it
No, no, no, no
Don't phunk with my heart
Baby, have some trustin', trustin'
When I come in lustin', lustin'
Cause I'll bring you that comfort
I ain't only here cause I want your
Body, I want your mind too
Interestin's what I find you
And I'm interested in the long haul
Come on girl (yee-haw)
I wonder if I take you home
Would you still be in love, baby (love, love)
In love baby (love, love)
I wonder if I take you home
Would you still be in love, baby (love, love)
In love baby (love, love)
No, no, no, no
Don't phunk with my heart
Girl, you had me, once you kissed me
My love for you is not iffy
I always want you wit me
I'll play Bobby and you'll play Whitney (all long)
If you smoke, I smoke too
That's how much I'm in love wit chu
Crazy is what crazy do
Crazy in love, I'm a crazy fool
No, no, no, no
Don't phunk with my heart
Why are you so in-sa-cure?
When you got passionate love hurr?
You always claimin' I'm a cheater
Think I'll up and go leave ya
For another señorita
You forgot that I need ya
You must have caught amnesia
That's why you don't believe wha
Wha'- yeah - check it out
Don't you worry about a thing, baby
Cause you know you got me by a string, baby
Don't you worry about a thing, baby
Cause you know you got me by a string, baby
Baby girl, you make me feel
You know you make me feel so real
I love you more than sex appeal
(Cause you're)
That-tha, that tha, that-tha, that girl
That-tha, that tha, that-tha, that girl
That-tha, that tha, that-tha, that girl
That-tha, that tha, that-tha, that girl
That-tha, that tha, that-tha, that girl
That-tha, that tha, that-tha, that girl
No, no, no, no (that-that-that-that-that-that-girl)
Don't phunk with my heart (that-that-that-that-that-that-girl)
No, no, no, no
Don't phunk with my heart
I wonder if I take you home
Would you still be in love, baby (love, love)
In love baby (love, love)
I wonder if I take you home
Would you still be in love, baby (love, love)
In love baby (love, love)
I wonder if I take you home
Would you still be in love, baby (love, love)
In love baby (love, love)
I wonder if I take you home
Would you still be in love, baby (love, love)
In love baby (love, love)
Don't you worry about a thing, baby
Cause you know you got me by a string, baby
Don't you worry about a thing, baby
Cause you know you got me by a string, baby

In recent years, the Indian government has taken steps to revamp the Padma Awards and shift the focus towards recognizing the contributions of true heroes of India. The Padma Awards are among the most prestigious civilian awards in the country and are awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions in their respective fields.
Until about a decade ago, the Padma Awards were often criticized for being awarded to celebrities and political figures, rather than to individuals who had truly made a difference in their communities or fields of work. Bollywood stars, fake journalists, and politicians were frequently among the recipients, leading to concerns about the legitimacy and relevance of the awards.
However, over the past decade, the Indian government has taken steps to ensure that the Padma Awards are bestowed upon individuals who truly deserve them. There is now a greater emphasis on recognizing those who have made significant contributions to society, whether through their work in the arts, sciences, or community service.
As a result of this shift in focus, the Padma Awards have been given to a diverse range of individuals in recent years, including social activists, environmentalists, doctors, and teachers. These individuals have made important contributions to society, often working tirelessly in their respective fields with little recognition or reward.
Some notable examples of recent Padma Awards recipients include Ravi Kumar Narra, who established a free medical clinic for low-income families in the United States; Ajoy Kumar, a former IPS officer who now works to promote education and awareness around road safety; and Shyamlal Yadav, a journalist who has exposed corruption and malpractice in the Indian government.
By recognizing these true heroes of India, the government is sending a powerful message about the importance of service and dedication to the greater good. It is also helping to foster a culture of excellence and innovation, by shining a light on individuals who have made significant contributions in their fields and inspiring others to follow in their footsteps.
In conclusion, the change in focus of the Padma Awards towards recognizing true heroes of India is a positive step towards celebrating the contributions of those who have made a significant difference in their communities and fields of work. By avoiding the temptation to reward celebrities or political figures, the government is sending a clear message about the importance of service and dedication to the greater good. It is to be hoped that this trend continues, inspiring a new generation of Indian heroes to rise up and make their mark on the world:
