I painted a Doberman named Wicked in watercolors!

I figured out a new technique with my watercolor brushes to make more realistic short/fine hairs. I am absolutely in love with this painting, I think it may be my best so far.

About my process:

So usually I’d use a cut up acrylic brush to get an uneven/jagged texture that creates strokes resembling when used to paint. This is great with long haired animals if they have flowing hair. With short haired dogs it doesn’t work as well because of the hundreds (thousands?) of tiny little strokes required to get the texture right. This time I used an actual watercolor brush (a smaller round brush) and would flick any excess water off so it was mostly dry (but with pigment) and splayed out kind of wildly (more or less depending on how sparse or heavy/dark I needed the hair to be in each area) I primarily used a Windsor & Newton Series-7 size 3 (finest sable). The paper is 9x12. Adjust your brush sizing accordingly. I used a white gel pen for corrections. Often it’s too bright for a particular area on a darker dog so I’ll often rub it in with my fingers to soften the contrast!

We had a great time at UDC yesterday- Ashen unfortunately didn't pass her ATT (she did not bark at the Bad Man even though she stood with me very intensely), but we had a great time showing in the conformation ring just for fun with lots of friends. She got excellent ratings and the first judge said she was "a square, very pretty bitch with a beautiful head". 🥰 Long day, but good day.

I handled @doberbutts Fenris also and he was a good boy!! He did great despite it being his first confo event AND roadtripping with auntie. We both got some compliments from some other handlers, he really surprised me at not being a wild child. 😂

A Facebook group I follow has a bunch of people sharing the ribbons they earned this year with their dogs. I definitely didn’t think we had this many and it makes me feel a little better about our journey.

My personal favorite is his B match Best Adult in Show! Not the flashiest but that was a major highlight of that weekend! I wasn’t able to find a few of them but his grand total is 68 ribbons 🏆

Some Thoughts on Training

I don’t enjoy training.

I’ve never been very patient, I expect too much too soon, get easily frustrated, and am bad at breaking behaviors into smaller parts. But I do want to succeed at showing and finishing my dogs. So I am trying. And I am failing quite a bit. But I am learning about how to hold myself accountable and how to best learn

Videoing my sessions has really helped me appreciate the parts where we succeed as well. I would recommend it to anyone who feels frustrated and like they’re not progressing. Watch again from a different angle.

So here’s a very long video of me finally getting into the groove with Spork, more than five minutes after our training session actually started. This is after I lowered my criteria drastically and started looking only for a stand with a head up. Sorry the focus is off.

Untrimmed borzoi uptuck vs trimmed!! Borzoi are a low grooming breed and I basically only take scissors to this and her ears, but look at that insane difference and how much of a curve it brings to the underline.
