So the twins make the most Hiccup leg jokes in RttE, but they're also the only ones flabbergasted and angry when Astrid decides her Fic canon Hiccup in Darkest Night also loses a leg.
Tuff: "Why does he have to have one leg?"
Ruff: "Yeah, couldn't you have given old H a break?"
Tuff: "Can a brother get a leg up in this place? Hmmm?"
Hic: "No, Tuff, I can't"
Tuff: "What kind of messed-up yak dung is that? It's a made-up story. And you can change things."
(Dialogue taken straight from the episode Darkest Night)
So what if the reason they make the most leg jokes is because even 3 to 4 years later, they're still trying to get used to the fact that their friend lost a physical part of himself?
It's pretty much canon that they use comedy as a crutch, either to make light of a serious situation, deal with stress, or when something bad happens. So what if they're still trying to normalize Hiccup's loss?

People thinking Jason was made fun of at school for being previously poor when he was canonically made fun of for hanging out with his butler in his mansion and not doing anything fun…😔
