Saint James was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus according to the New Testament, and is the patron saint of Spain. According to ancient local tradition, on 2 January AD 40, the Virgin Mary appeared to James on the bank of the Ebro River at Caesaraugusta, while he was preaching the Gospel in Hispania. She appeared upon a pillar, Nuestra Señora del Pilar, and that pillar is conserved and venerated within the present Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar, in Zaragoza, Spain.

Depicts the fountain (sometimes called the Fountain of the Nymphs) at an entrance to the 350-acre Retiro Park in Madrid, close to his studio. Simonet y Lombardo moved to Madrid from Barcelona in 1911 to take up a professorship at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts.

Empress Eleanor of Austria by Spanish school (Setdart - 22Jun22 auction Lot 50). Filled in shadows 50% & removed cracks & spots w Pshop 3784X5014 @150 5.1Mj.Filling in the shadows revealed the pattern of her dress and numerous spots. Her right arm was essentially covered with spots so it is an estimated reconstruction. She appears to be wearing a feather ornament on the right side of her head, but it could be a flaw. Her ruff is borne by a supportasse.
