The Mosley Review: Devotion
Tumblr media
There's a certain romanticism to Naval Air Pilot films that never stops being intoxicating. Whether it be about a fictional war while retaining as much realism to the fighters that are used today or the airmen that paved the way for pilots today, there is still a charm that is never lost. This film takes a look at a war that is often not explored since its sandwiched between The Cold War and the Vietnam War. We had the Forgotten Generation of the first World War, but the Korean War is often known as the Forgotten War. I do like that more films have started to explore the many other wars and skirmishes in America's history. Now this one tackles the majority of the aerial combat done with the bombings, but it doesn't shy away from the boots on the ground and I liked seeing the divide between them. Where most films based on the true story of the soldiers and the enemy they fight in massive battles, this film decided to focus on the inner battle of psychological torture of the racist injustices of the times, the personal lives of the men in the air, the brotherhood that is forged between pilots and the amount of pride that could be detriment to the team even it gets the job done. I appreciated that and I'm glad the film left the portrayal of the real pilots the story is based upon in the hands of a very capable cast.

Johnathan Majors is on a hot streak right now and there's no sign of stopping. His portrayal of Ensign Jesse Brown was fantastic and endearing. He brilliantly sometimes hides and then releases the characters anger and pain in a number of looks and body language. The mirror scene is one of the most iconic and gut wrenching scenes of the film. When he wasn't constantly putting on a brave face, we get to see the character's charm and humanity shine through. Christina Jackson was wonderful as his loving and strong wife Daisy Brown. She brings out the light within him when he is home. Her sweetness and wisdom really shines in the softer and more intimate scenes of the film. Glenn Powell was great as Jesse's wingman as Lieutenant Tom Hudner. His charm shines at all times, but I loved that he always respected his crew and the way he naturally earned Jesse's respect. The two of them were excellent together and I loved that their friendship was the soul of the film. Daisy had a touching scene with Tom and I loved their immediate bond. I always enjoy seeing Thomas Sadoski in anything and as their team leader, Dick Cevoli, he was just as awesome and solid as you'd expect. He is such a great character actor and this film showcases that yet again. A standout in the film that took me by surprise was Serinda Swan as Elizabeth Taylor. She nailed the persona, charm, attitude and mystique of the real life socialite. She had a number of great scenes with Jesse and I loved every second of it.
Tumblr media
The score by composer Chanda Dancy was uplifting, somber and heroic at the right times and really brought home the emotional core of the film. Visually the film was nice to look at, but at times I felt it was almost too murky in the darker lit scenes and even in the interior of the ship scenes. It sometimes took away from the more intimate moments between two characters talking in their bunk. Even though this was a true story, I felt that the story dragged a bit and felt almost too clean. The focus is the power of friendship, but I wish there was a little less levity with the tone of the film. In the end, this was a good film about a real friendship that was forged in a time where it was frowned upon. I will definitely add this to the list of good Naval Aviator films, but somewhere in the top 10, but not top 5. Let me know what you thought of the film or my review in the comments below. Thanks for reading!

Your Woman Crush Weekly is Serinda Swan.  We’re trying a new layout, hopefully it’ll even out some of the photo size issues.
Swan is a 33 year old actress from West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.  Serinda is the daughter of Scott Swan, an actor and theater director who runs his own acting studio on the North Shore, making her a second generation actress.
She began her acting career in 2005 in the Hindi comedy, ‘Neal n Nikki’.  She would then appear in the long running CW show, “Supernatural” in 2006, in the 2nd to last episode of their first season.   She’d later return in the sixth season as the show’s villain of the week.
She’d then appear on “Psych” as a murder suspect and then on  “Smallville” for several episodes as iconic character Zatana Zatura.  She’d later follow that up with a guest starring role in popular Canadian crime comedy, “Republic of Doyle”.
She landed starring roles in the short lived series “Breakout Kings” and “Graceland”.  While the shows didn’t last long, she earned a lot of praise for her performances which lead to more more major roles.
Lately she’s really taken off in her career, landing a recurring role in the HBO sports-drama “Ballers”.  She also was cast a Medusa on the ABC superhero drama, “Inhumans”.
Outside of her acting, she’s known for her charity work.  Notably with Swan works with different charities including the Somaly Mam Foundation, United Nations Foundation's Nothing But Nets, and Heifer International.
So for all of her acting accomplishments, her charity work and her tremendous beauty, she is your Woman Crush for this Week.

New Post has been published on http://www.pointofgeeks.com/inhumans-trailer-another-black-eye-for-marvel-tv/
INHUMANS Trailer: Another Black Eye For Marvel TV
Marvel continues its cinematic assault that began with Iron Man in 2008 and has since spread to the small screen on both network TV and streaming services. There are a variety of offerings ranging from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. which is going into its fifth season, while Netflix is poised to assemble The Defenders in a mere matter of months. Now the next stage of their televised onslaught will be this Fall’s release of Inhumans.
The Marvel Comic super team’s live-action debut has been in the works for years. What sets this project apart from other Marvel shows is that the first two episodes will premiere in IMAX theaters, before transitioning to ABC for the remainder of the eight-episode season. The show is developed by Iron Fist’s Scott Buck and stars Anson Mount (Hell On Wheels) as Blackbolt, Serinda Swan (Smallville) as Medusa, and Iwan Rheon (Game of Thrones) as Maximus.
The first full trailer shows off the scope and characters that audiences will become familiar with this Fall. Inhumans will take the place of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. until it ends its run in the mid-season and is expected to open up the MCU on television in ways never seen before. The show will see the Inhumans’ royal family betrayed by Maximus and banished from their secret kingdom on the dark side of the moon and find themselves in the middle of an interstellar conflict.
From the looks of the trailer, the show lacks the budget and production values to adequately adapt the otherworldly powers of the Inhumans. Case in point, Medusa’s sentient hair never budges. Not only is it her most defining power, but is also a character in itself, much like we saw with Stephen Strange’s Cloak of Levitation in last year’s Doctor Strange. Buck was the mind behind the worst received project in the MCU’s history with Iron Fist and this show looks equally troubling… Check out the trailer:
youtube
Official Synopsis:
After the Royal Family of Inhumans is splintered by a military coup, they barely escape to Hawaii where their surprising interactions with the lush world and humanity around them may prove to not only save them, but Earth itself.
Inhumans premieres in IMAX on Sept. 1 before premiering on ABC on Friday, Sept. 29th, 2017.
