Have you ever seen a woman’s water break while on the MBTA, or even in your own home?

Deirdre Tylor, 15, from an alternative school in BPS, witnessed a young Black woman have a baby on the 22 bus to Ruggles on October 15.  Tylor recalled she screamed, ¨My baby is coming.¨. We all know this could have frightened passengers on the bus.

According to Tylor, the young mother looked as if she needed help and instead of people offering help or checking on her people instead recorded her. People thought it was humorous to laugh at the distressed young woman who could have been in worse condition..

This isn’t the only incident where a woman of color wasn’t taken seriously during a pregnancy or giving birth. Famous tennis player Serena Williams was formerly negatively impacted by the treatment she encountered. She recently had a near death experience while pregnant because of a similar problem. While she was in the hospital she asked a nurse for help and the nurse thought it was just the effect of her pain medication, which led to the nurse not acknowledging her. After finally listening to her they finally gave her what she needed. They found out she had several blood clots in her lungs. The fact that they weren’t listening to her is what makes this outrageous.

There’s been complications, misunderstandings and even racist acts towards women of color giving birth. Research shows that African American women are more likely to die giving birth and or lose their child than any other race. Thanks to Liz Miranda she pushed the bill through the state house so that they can investigate the continuous problem that’s been ongoing. “Over the past 20 years, cases of SMM have increased by over 200%, while cases disproportionately affect Black women,”the AJMC said. “One study found Black women experienced SMM at a rate 2.1 times greater than that of white women.”

The causes of death are also different between all women and Black women, the AJMC said. For all mothers, the top causes of death are cardiovascular conditions, hemorrhage, and infection. For Black women, the leading causes of death are cardiovascular conditions, as well as cardiomyopathy, pre-emplasia, and eclampsia, or hypertensive disorders

Nurse Edith Oluwajoba said, “Patients would be told to shut up when they asked for help they basically get brushed off when they asked for help”

Insurance plays a role

After pregnancy pain is existent and it can mostly be treated but mostly not because of racial bias.

Ms. Larson didn’t feel respected during her pregnancy and didn’t take her opinion into consideration.

“This is systematic racism and also a gender problem. There’s not really a reason, it’s more of what’s the solution.”

According to an article from Today called, “You are not listening to me: Pain and Implicit Bias in Medicine” published in 2020, it says: “With Black women there is an assumption that they don’t know their bodies, that they don’t understand, that they’re not educated about their bodies.”

These examples show racism is implanted into everything, even our mothers’ health.
