One by one, the people that laid in a pile in the middle of the living room started to wake up.
Hearing and seeing the reactions was interesting, Rile was the first to wake. Initially re was confused but quickly spotted a familiar face, Scotty.
Scotty tried to brush off Rile, not wanting to be woken up, but a few gentle smacks was enough to get him up and becoming confused as well.
While those two looked around, Ralf woke up next, followed by Valerie; who’s panic caused the others to start to stir as well.
Claude was the last to wake, only being woken by being shaken by Sera.
Confusion was the most prominent among all eight of them as they talked to each other, trying to piece together what happened and where they were. There was also anger, fear, and uncertainty. Isn’t it all so refreshing?
Static coming from an unknown part of the room caused silence as they all looked around.
“Welcome everyone! You all are very confused and that’s alright, you’re here to take part in a game called Eight!” A voice comes from the hidden speakers.
“Hey! Who are you?! Why are we here?!” Rile shouts, trying to find where the speakers were.
“Who I am isn’t too important right now, and you’re here to play my game called Eight!”
“Why.. Is it called Eight?” Aina asked
“Because there’s eight of you to participate in my game, my game called Eight!”
“Stop repeating yourself! What the hell makes you think we’re going to play this game you’ve kidnapped us for!” Claude snapped, already becoming irritated.
“Well the prize for winning is being able to become your best self!” The voice chimed.
“Oh fuck off! I’m out of here!” He yelled, turning to head towards the door.
“Oh? You don’t want to play? Well, maybe I could pick up Kathryn to play instead!”
He pauses to look around, rage burning in his eyes “What the fuck did you just say?”
“Well if any of you don’t want to play, I can just get one of your loved ones for a chance to become their best self!” The voice explained. “Aina, your Rosline would do almost anything to become the best musician she can, wouldn’t she?”
All eyes turn to look at the shadow demon, who meekly nods. “She would.”
“Eliza! That Marley of yours, wouldn’t poi love to become a well known, if not famous, scientist?”
Eliza tenses as the eyes turn to her. “I think so, especially with how much work poi has been putting into pois research.”
“Scotty, don’t think I forgot about your dear mother! Always trying to help people, yes? Wouldn’t she love to be able to help hundreds, if not thousands?”
“Hey! Leave my ma out of this!” Scotty snapped before pausing for a moment. “But yeah, she would.”
“And Claude-”
“Enough.” The fire demon snarled. “You’ve made your point. I’ll stay.”
“Fantastic! With that out of the way, I’ll give you eight some time to adjust and get to know each other! I’ll be back in a bit with your first challenge!”
Then the voice goes silent, leaving the group alone for now.
“Well fuck that. Scotty’s already here.” Rile finally speaks up, turning to go to the door to try to leave.
“Wow, thanks.” Scotty sarcastically replies.
The door knob rattles and clicks under rem’s hand but doesn’t budge, causing rem to groan and reach into rem’s pocket for a lock picking kit re kept on hand.
Re kneels down so re can pick the lock “It’s nothing against you Scotty, but if you’re already here then there’s nothing keeping me heRE-”
The metal tools and the door knob spark to life, sending electricity into Rile, and soon the smell of burning flesh as the tools burned into rem’s hands and the skin around rem’s piercings burned.
As quickly as it started, Rile falls to the ground, twitching, and various screams rang out from the group.
“Oh fuck-” Scotty coughs. “Is- Is re dead?!”
Sera slowly steps towards rem, reaching down to feel for any pulse in rem’s neck.
There was a brief silence, only to be broken by the confirmation. “Re’s dead.”
“We.. We can’t just leave rem there.” He hesitantly spoke, trying to prevent his voice from cracking as he stared at his friend’s corpse.
Sera looks over at Eliza. “Eliza, is it? You’re a healer angel, right? You’ve probably seen and handled death too. Help me carry rem to some other room.”
Eliza pauses before nodding. “Yeah, alright.” She responds, voice shaking, heading over to help Sera pick up Rile’s body to carry it to somewhere else in the house.
“Scotty? Are you alright?” Valerie asked.
“Are you fucking serious?! He just saw his friend die! No! He’s not alright!” Claude shouts.
“I’ll be fine.” Scotty speaks up, taking a breath. “I’m shaken but I’ll be fine.” Maybe repeating it enough times would make it true.
“How are you fine after seeing that?” Aina asked.
“I um.. I ride motorcycles. I’ve seen a lot of brutal crashes.” He explained. “I’m not fine right now. But I will be.”
Valerie walks over to him to wrap xer arm around him to guide him to a couch. “Come on, let's go sit down.” Xey hoped he couldn’t feel xer own shaking through his jacket.
“So Rile was killed for trying to leave, so we’re forced to play regardless?! What if we refuse to play? Huh?! Will we be killed for that too?? Will we be killed for losing?!” Claude shouts, as if trying to rally the others.
“Claude, stop. You’re not helping.” Ralf says.
“Oh shut up! Would you rather I cave your fucking skull in?!”
“Anger isn’t going to get you anywhere here. We need to wait to see what the voice wants from us. We haven’t even seen the rest of the house yet. Save your anger for when it’s actually needed.”
“He’s right.” Aina chimes in. “Rage isn’t helping, if anything, it’s just making this worse right now.”
Claude snorts before crossing their arms. “Whatever.”
~~~
“We found some bedrooms.” Eliza says as both her and Sera walked down the stairs.
“We laid Rile down in one of them and used a blanket to cover rem. It’s not the best, but we thought it was the most respectful thing we could do right now.” Sera explained.
“Thanks.. At least re will be comfortable.” Scotty says, trying to find any sort of comfort in this situation.
“Comfortable? Re won’t be comfortable, re’s de-” Claude is cut off by the sound of static.
“Well, it looks like someone learned that all locked doors here are electrified!” The unknown voice chimes, despite the peppy tone there was an underlying coldness. “Too bad that Rile will miss the first game. Speaking of, the first game is The Floor Is Lava! Everyone has 10 minutes to get ready and then the game will begin! Good luck!”
“We don’t even get time to try to pick ourselves up after a death?” Aina asks, sounding shaken by the thought.
“It doesn’t sound like it.” Ralf comments. “Come on, let’s try to move some stuff around to make the game easier."
