12/8/23.

After a long break, Ian Henderson (Dunedin, Fishrider Records) is posting again. His "Pop Lib" has been a go-to site for albums from Australia and New Zealand. His label has been a go-to label for years. And his brother, George Henderson (The Puddle) has been a go-to musician for years.

He posted about Senica the other day. Senica is a band that checks a lot of boxes for me. Christchurch, New Zealand - check. Melted Ice Cream (label), check. The aforementioned Pop Lib stamp of approval - check. The sweet guitar sounds that recall The Jean-Paul Sarte Experience - check.

This is a short EP on cassette made by friends who have been playing together since high school. The music certainly sounds more mature than their years might otherwise suggest. The band itself cite references like Straitjacket Fits, Wilco, Brian Jonestown Massacre and Radiohead.

I’ve decided that I cannot choose one of my three main stories so I’m just going to do all of them, separated by story, since two of them only have a few significant characters anyways (which means that I’ll be using an unholy amount of :’s. Bear with me on that)

Without further ado,

Undercity:

Ashling:

Rose: It used to be spending time with Arin, but since Arin died, Ashling decided that he’d only ever hurt the people he loved and should avoid them at all costs. So probably when he turns back to prayers and saints for comfort (Ashling has a weird relationship with religion that is more than one sentence can explain)

Poppy: This depends a lot on who the strangers are and who he’s pretending to be. When he’s supposed to be Watcher, heir to the Lord of Spies, generally very cold and aloof, as is expected. If he’s playing a part and pretending to be someone else, then however is needed for that persona or interaction or what he needs out of it. And on the rare occasions he gets to be just Ashling? Quiet, polite, tentatively friendly, and a bit distant.

Maran:

Rose: this one’s tricky. Maran’s shoved herself so deep into the mask she wears that she’s basically convinced herself that she doesn’t have desires, so probably just whatever she needs to stay alive; eating, sleeping, physically taking care of injuries, since she has a tendency to forget that she needs to do all of those

Poppy: quiet, aloof, and deeply calculating. Just gives off a general vibe of “I’m six steps ahead of you in directions you didn’t know existed”

The Fires:

Alexander:

Rose: Having a day with no obligations, where he can sleep as long as he wants and then curl up in bed with a book or some HGTV and a snack

Poppy: He’s very polite and friendly, and anyone not put off by him immediately can’t help but like him. He’s always joking, usually in a self-deprecating way, and he’ll offer to help people with whatever they’re doing

Leonora:

Rose: doing the things she loves, especially her magic

Poppy: brusque, necessarily polite, sort of mildly irritating to be having to interact with people

Myxor:

Rose: having some quiet time to read

Poppy: very shy, very quiet, and gives the distinct impression that he would love to vanish into the wallpaper

James:

Rose: taking the time to learn and explore new things. He’s of the mind that it’s always good for you to learn something new

Poppy: friendly, amiable, and polite

Senica:

Rose: dressing up, doing her makeup, painting her nails, basically anything that makes her feel pretty and fancy

Poppy: cheerful, friendly, and helpful

Shot at Dawn:

Camaziel:

Rose: taking time to go sit up on the roof and watch the sunrise every morning

Poppy: polite and nice, but a little distant and a bit spacey

Sam:

Rose: spending time with his friends

Poppy: polite and nice, but not overly friendly, and a bit cautious

Asher:

Rose: food. Cooking it or eating it, doesn’t matter. He just loves good food

Poppy: nice, cheerful, eager to help with whatever

KUĆICA ZA PTICE 2023.

"floefutur"

Upletena kućica inteligentnog predatora krvoločnog uma produkt je ove grupe. Petnička šuma je lokacija za koju je ovaj projekat konstruisan. Kućica je namenjena velikoj senici, karakterističnoj za dato područje. U pitanju je samostalna ptica sitne građe, svaštojed, sa nadimkom “zombi senica” koji dobija zbog nemilosardnog načina na koji ubija i jede druge vrste. Njena priroda, karakter i putanja kretanja bili su nam osnov za projektovanje kućice. Sama kućica osmišljena je tako da ne privlači previše pažnje, kako bi se izbegla potencijalna pretnja od strane predatora. Zato je oblik zavistan od konstrukcije i načina kačenja. Kućica je “upletena” – koristeći jednake trake formira se mreža koju kontrolišemo razapinjanjem. Ne postoji glavni ulaz, već je konstruisana tako da ptici omogućuje prolaz kroz svaki od postojećih otvora. Veličina je prilagođena dimenzijama maksimalnog broja stanara, koji uključuje jednu jedinku sa najviše 12 ptića. Kućica je prilagodljiva i može se postaviti na gotovo svakom drvetu.
