I love Waddle Dees! I just wish they were a bit crunchier.
Tumblr media
Perfect!
Name: Sectra Dee
Debut: Kirby: Triple Deluxe
Sectra Dee is exactly like a Waddle Dee... but it’s a bug! Isn’t that grand? Yes! It is! And you agree. For a little while, I was disappointed these were not called Waddle Bees, but I’m over it now! Sectra Dee is, thematically, a good name, especially since it facilitates the naming of variants, as well! And there are so many variants!
Tumblr media
The most straightforward is Parasol Sectra Dee! Parasol Sectra Dee is exactly like a Parasol Waddle Dee... but it’s a bug! Isn’t that grand? Yes! It is! And you agree. Parasol is one of my favorite abilities for how whimsical it is, and it’s even more fun to see a bug using it! This insect can’t fly, but at least it can glide jovially.
But these variants are not all merely Sectra Dees with different props! They are so much more. Kirby is not in Dream Land anymore, no no. He is in Bug World! “Buzz buzz!” -the bugs
Tumblr media
Sectra Burt is the one Sectra variant blessed with the miracle of flight! Bronto Burt is already vaaaguely bug-like with its particular style of wings, but this one goes above the ambiguity and is oh so bug. It even has a pointy stylet on its face! I know it will slurp some liquids! I hope not yours or mine!
Tumblr media
Then there is Sectra Knight, a bug redesign of Lanzer, a spear knight enemy! This one is especially funny to me. It looks like it’s wearing a mask with a bug face on it! Is it a fraud? Is that a non-bug under there? Or is that its real face, and its cuticle is just shaped in such a way it looks like a mask? I will assume that it IS a mask, and it has the exact bug face underneath. I’m a silly one!
Tumblr media
Sectra Shooter is a bug who will shoot you! Imagine being stung by a bug, only to notice the bug is feet away from you, and just shooting you with arrows out of spite. I’m glad that doesn’t happen in real life, both because it would hurt, and because people would use it to hate bugs even more. But Sectra Shooter is a cool creature! Very cool compound eye shades, and I like how the top of its head kind of evokes a hat, with its antennae like feathers!
Tumblr media
Finally there is Sectra Gordo, who we have talked about before! The most different in style of all of these, and also one of the funniest. Just a levitating and indestructible beetle. Magical beetle!
Tumblr media
But this post is about Sectra Dee, and I got sidetracked! They have only appeared in Triple Deluxe and Blowout Blast, only having story significance in Triple Deluxe. But it’s kind of vague! All we really know is they inhabit Royal Road, the realm of Queen Sectonia, and probably serve her. But that’s all we get! I like to think they really are just like Waddle Dees, little guys just living their lives, not truly meaning any harm but maybe sometimes getting roped into bad crowds.
Tumblr media
At least, we get some Sectra Dee Content in one of the manga, where they are serving Taranza just like Waddle Dees serve Dedede! Cinematic parallels. Are those eyelashes on the one in the back? Awesome! a Girl Bug.

Parasites in Kirby: Triple Deluxe
Last year when a friend showed me descriptions of bosses from Kirby: Triple Deluxe, a thought occurred to me regarding some of the enemies found later in the game. In the final world, Royal Road, which is the hideout of Queen Sectonia, reskinned versions of enemies in the game can be found which take on a bug-like appearance: Sectra Dees (Waddle Dees), Sectra Burts (Bronto Burts), Sectra Shooters (Spynum) and Sectra Gordos (Gordos).
Tumblr media
Modern Kirby games are no stranger to reskinning familiar enemies to fit them more with the setting, such as the robot-like enemies in Egg Engines on Halcandra or the robotized enemies in Planet Robobot. These specific enemies seem to tie in with a certain pause description of the final boss. Sectonia Vine description says the following:
“Sectonia's parasitic species survives by leeching power from other life forms until they're weak enough to be controlled.“
Given these enemies are only really present in Royal Road, is it feasible they are members of Sectonia’s species that have parasitized these enemies to serve Sectonia further. Their original form may be some sort of green bug-creature, given the commonalities between Sectra Dees, Sectra Burts and Sectra Shoorters. The only real outlier is the Sectra Gordo here; maybe they are a different variety?

Name: Ghost Gordo
Debut: Kirby: Triple Deluxe
Did you know that the very first non-Mario character featured, and in fact among the earliest posts on this blog, was Gordo? It’s true! You can read that post and gawk at the relative lack of exclamation points compared to more recent ones. Anyway. Gordo’s whole Thing is being entirely invincible... but then, how did it become a GHOST?!
Tumblr media
The answer is...! I don’t know, but I don’t think this is actually the ghost of a Gordo, but a ghostly creature that happens to be quite similar to a Gordo, which is obviously an ideal form in this world. Just look at Sectra Gordo!
Tumblr media
This thing is so silly. I don’t know if those are six pointy legs or just regular ol’ spikes, but this is 100% a beetle that convergently evolved a Gordo-like form, not a species of Gordo itself. It is never seen opening its elytra, and instead of flying, just Hovers. It is a life hack! Bugs do not need to use their wings if they can simply hover.
Tumblr media
Anyway, ghosts are great at hovering, and this is about Ghost Gordo! In its first appearance, Ghost Gordo appears in haunted stages, of course, and like other ghosts in this game, has the unique attribute of being visible in mirrors, but not outside of them. If you are brushing your teeth and see Ghost Gordo in the mirror, be careful! It is real, and it CAN hurt you. Other than this though, they behave just like normal Gordos, even having their spikes move similarly.
Tumblr media
Ghost Gordo made no appearances for 8 whole years, but yowza! Yippee! In Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Ghost Gordo gets to REALLY shine, and be more than just a slightly different Gordo. Let’s see why!
Tumblr media
Now, for the first time in HISTORY, Ghost Gordo sleeps. Good night! It sleeps in the dark, just like me! By now you may have noticed that the Forgotten Land images all have its spikes the same size, and that is another new thing that makes it stand on its own- rather than its spikes constantly moving and changing size, Ghost Gordo’s spikes are now static, always the same size, and I really like that!
Tumblr media
When Kirby learns how to harness and produce the miracle of light, Ghost Gordo will wake up! Just like I would in that situation! And then, they will approach. They will just watch, and float toward him. Ghostily. Some ghosts may use the dark to make mischief, but Ghost Gordo just wants to sleep, dagnabbit! That being said, they don’t seem malevolent, just curious if anything. They can’t help it if their bodies are dangerous, but they are oh so interested in this strange being that has entered their home! Whenever the light is turned back off, Ghost Gordo will go back to sleep. Good night!
Tumblr media
I may have said that Ghost Gordo is probably not the ghost of a Gordo, BUT we have in fact seen a living Gordo with the same spike configuration and lovely single eye! In Dream Land 3, there is a variety of Gordos, used in minigames hosted by funny friends, one of these Gordos being quite similar to Ghost Gordo! Maybe Gordos can become ghosts after all, but only that specific Gordo species? Or maybe they are not truly Dead ghosts, but just ghostly creatures. Maybe some Gordos decided to hang out with ghosts in dark haunted places! In the dark, they eventually lost their pigmentation, and learned how to become invisible with the help of Real Ghost Magic. The more isolated population in the New World even developed an entirely unique set of behaviors! Wow. What a great animal!
