Why would he when he’s already had women fawning over him and hoping to bed him? You assumed that in his eyes he’d looked at you as the young, nerdy, naive art enthusiast looking for a mentor.

“You mean, we’re going to actually open the creepy death box.”

“Yes, I’d kinda want to know if what’s in here is actually meant to be here or if we’d have to call SCO-19. Quit being a scaredy cat.” You teased.

“Since, I’m a gentleman,” He says with a shaky voice. “I’ll do the honors.”

You put a hand over your heart further teasing him. “Aw, my hero.”

Steven shoves the tip of the crowbar into the box’s top, hearing a crack to signal that its opening up. Steven still hesitant to open the box, you place a hand over his to grip the crowbar as well. You both look at each other, nod, then pull down.

A final crack sounds and the box is fully open and a cloud of dust disperses. Packing peanuts and bubble wrapped stuffed at the top of the box, obscuring your view of the items inside. Steven takes the initiative and puts his hand into the box and pulling out a porcelain doll with dark brown skin and a traditional Haitian dress. The doll had a sad expression on its face. A red ribbon tying a description tag to the doll’s right hand.

“A doll?” Steven asks, bewilderment in his tone.

“Looks familiar,” You take it from his hands, inspecting it. You notice Steven wiping his hands on his pants. “Everything okay?”

“Yes, just a bit of dust, is all.”

Thats’s when you read the name on the tag and your eyes widened. “La Peau de Lueur.” You whispered.

“Glow Skin,” Steven translates. “What does that…” Steven looks at his hands seeing it shimmer like glitter.

Your eyes widened. “My parents told me the story of this artifact as a child. When they were younger and living in a small village in Haiti, there was a woman, Adeline. She killed herself after learning of that her husband was unfaithful. When the authorities found the body, she was found clutching a doll in her right hand. Legend has it that she was a witch who dabbled in black magic and transferred her soul to the doll. Whoever is unlucky enough to encounter it will be hex’d. This dust is no ordinary dust, Steven. It’s some fucking kind of potent death pollen!”

Steven is now heavily breathing, a bead of sweat forming at his forehead. “Bloody hell,” He exclaims. “That can’t possibly be true. Are you saying we could die?”

“It sounds absurd, yes. But look at us. We’re a mess. It must be real.”

SCP-6184 “The Girl Maker”

(People seemed to like the goofy post I made, so here’s a full entry. Enjoy.)

Object Class: Euclid Keter post event G6184-D.

Special Containment Procedures: Object is to be housed in a warehouse outside of the now destroyed [REDACTED] City. Agents are to maintain a cover as warehouse workers and maintain a buffer zone of one (1) square mile. Any individual found inside the buffer zone is to be escorted from the site down a main road until they are dropped off at mile marker ██ on highway 1█, outside of [REDACTED] City and told that the warehouse contains unstable chemical waste. Force is authorized to be used against individuals who will not leave voluntarily.

The interior of the site is to be inspected routinely for rodents and other mammalians. Site supervisors are to be informed of these animals immediately, and such animals must be killed and removed from the premises once they can be captured. Other routine maintenance of the building is to be done as seen fit by site supervisors.

Any and all involuntarily made specimens of SCP-6184-1 are to be terminated and turned over to researchers for study before being incinerated.

Instances of SCP-6184-1 that are generated during testing and have passed a psychological evaluation are authorized to become D-class personnel. Individuals who choose to do so should be allowed to be called by their chosen name and be given the same freedoms and privileges other D-class personnel are afforded. Individuals who fail a psychological evaluation or refuse to become D-class personnel are to be terminated, an autopsy performed, and then incinerated.

Description: SCP-6184 is a large computer resembling early models of [REDACTED] computers manufactured in the year 19██. The main difference is a large pad labeled “generated here” wired directly to the device, as well as labels for knobs and switches that do not correspond to their original intended function. Disassembly of the device reveals that is entirely standard in make for the 19██ models of [REDACTED] computers aside from the pad and labels. SCP-6184 has an internal battery that, according to all tests, has been completely drained for █ years, but has no signs of corrosion due to use. Despite having no electrical power input, the device can function normally.

When the computer is powered on, lights inside the various switches and buttons turn on an a soft mechanical hum can be heard. One button, labeled “generate,” when pressed, will cause a human female (henceforth SCP-6184-1) to appear on the pad. Individuals generated intentionally this way show no anomalous effects and are shown to who have knowledge that they were created by SCP-6184 and consider it their parent, but have no strong familial ties to it like one might a biological parent. Instances of SCP-6184-1 differ in age ranging from 18 to ██. Individuals have distinct personalities that are within standard human variation, corresponding in both physical and mental maturity to an individual of their age.

If an individual of any sex or gender identity stands on the pad, no instance of SCP-6184-1 is generated. Instead, the individual standing on the pad is instantly transformed within SCO-6184′s inputted parameters, with the following exceptions: The individual will retain their prior memories and not regard SCP-6184 as a parent; the individual will undergo a physical and possibly genetic change depending on their self identified gender identity as well as certain parameters set on the computer. It should be noted some parameters are seemingly ignored in human subjects. If a non-human mammal is on the pad when “generate” is pressed, [DATA EXPUNGED].

The only known constant between individual instances of SCP-6184-1 is that their gender identity, sexuality, and physical appearance match the various labeled switches and knobs on the machine. When the switch labeled “lesbian” is turned on, for example, 100% of generated instances of SCP-6184-1 will have a strong sexual preference for individuals who identified women. When the switch is turned off, however, individuals show this preference only in rates consistent with the appearance of it in biologically born humans. The only switch that cannot be manipulated the one labeled “girl” on the top position and “boy” on the bottom position. The switch has been removed and, based on all know instances of SCP-6184-1 generated, is stuck in the “girl” position.

SCP-6184 has shown great potential to generate D-class personnel for tests that require all female personnel. Multiple individuals have been generated that have become proper agents at the approval of O5-█, including Agent ███ and Agent █████. PER O5-██, INSTANCES OF SCP-6184-1 ARE NOT TO BE GENERATED OUTSIDE OF TESTING POST EVENT G6184-G. SEE GENERATION REPORT 6184-7I. ALL TESTS ARE TO BE APPROVED BY O5-██. UPDATES TO SECURITY PROTOCOLS PENDING.

Lab Report-6184A: Multiple individuals are to be generated to identify the range of individuals SCP-6184 can create.

*Test 1: Variable(s) changed: “Lesbian” set to on. Result: Huaman female of [DATA EXPUNGED] descent is generated at 2█ years of age. Individual identifies as a cisgender woman. Individual shows a sexual preference for women. Subject did not want to become D-class personnel. Status: Terminated.

*Test 5: Variable(s) changed: “Lesbian” set to on, dial labeled “trans” turned to middle setting. Result: Human of African American descent is generated at 31 years of age. Individual identifies as non-binary and shows a preference for being identified with no gender. Individual shows a sexual preference for women. Individual is seemingly highly combat trained and, after psychological evaluation, is permitted to join Taskforce [REDACTED] as Agent █████. Status: Active field agent.

*Test 12: Variables changed: Dial labeled “trans” is turned past listed parameters. Result: Human of [REDACTED] [REDACTED] escapes the testing area and leaves the buffer zone. Agents dispatched. SCP-6184-1 arrives at the nearby City of [DATA EXPUNGED] and proceeds to [DATA EXPUNGED]. City devastated, majority of the population found [DATA EXPUNGED]. No survivors found as of writing.

Note: I hope the catastrophic loss of life shows you [EXPLICATIVE REMOVED] that this isn’t a toy. Anyone who even suggests turning any variable “up to 11,” even as a joke, will be reassigned as D-Class personnel. And stop asking. Who knows what other-dimensional gender, uh, “they” identified as. -Dr. D████.

*Test 18: Variables changed: [DATA EXPUNGED]; a rodent (seemingly a rat) is noted on security cameras on the pad at the time “generate” is pressed. Result: [DATA EXPUNGED].

Note: We need to make sure that doesn’t happen again. I suggest we keep the warehouse clear of pests. And, NO, you can’t have one. I don’t care how damn cute or sexy you say she was. These are living people, not pets or objects. 6184-1 showed clear signs of [DATA EXPUNGED]. -Dr. D████.

Lab Report-6184B: After the discovery that organisms on the pad are changed, human testing is approved.

Note: Due to the usefulness of members of the transgender community in these tests, the identities of all individuals used in testing are to be respected, regardless of personal bias. -Dr. D████.

*Test 1: Subject D-55431, who identifies as a transgender woman. Subject had not begun hormone replacement therapy or any form of gender affirming surgery as of this trial. Variables changed: “Trans” dial set at lowest value. Result: Individual seemingly changed into a different person. Psychological tests revealed the subject to be D-55431, and genetic testing reveals their DNA is similarly matching D-55413′s prior to testing, matching that of an identical twin. Subject began to identify as a cisgender woman. Status: Subject terminated at the end of D-55431′s term of service.

*Test 4: Subject D-89891, who identifies as as genderfluid. Subject occasionally superficially changed their appearance to appear more masculine or feminine, but underwent no hormone treatment or surgeries. Subject at the time identified as female. Variables changed: “Hair” set to “blonde” Results: Subject’s hair immediately became blonde. Subject expressed satisfaction, stating they had “never had a dye job that good.” No other changes identified at the time. However, approximately 72 hours later, while subject was thinking about changing their gender presentation, subject’s physical form changed to that of a male, including sex organs and secondary sexual characteristics. Subject displayed initial surprise followed by immense satisfaction with the changes. Subject allowed to not be terminated at the end of subject’s term of service. Approximately three (3) weeks later, subject reverted to back to female, stating she “missed having tits.” Status: Subject to be held indefinitely for further study.

*Test 8: Dr. D████. Test was unauthorized. Dr. D████ previously identified as male with the Foundation but as a transgender female in her personal life, and had begun hormone replacement therapy, but no surgeries. Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers

(19) So the heart of man (answereth) to man.—What is in our own hearts we find in others also. Whatever are the distinguishing features of our own characters we discover and elicit the same in others. The merciful, the generous, the devout, the pure, recognise the same qualities in others, and themselves feel and receive sympathy from such persons. So the evil, too, find themselves in harmony with those of like disposition.

Proverbs 27:19. As in water face answereth to face — As the image of a man’s face in the water answers to his natural face who looks into it; or, as in water one man’s face is like another’s, the difference of men’s faces being not there visible; so one man resembles another not only in the regard of the corruption of nature, which is alike in all men, but also with respect to the tempers and dispositions of their minds, wherein likewise they frequently agree. Dr. Grey thinks the verse should be rendered, “As the water showeth the face to the face, so doth the heart the man to the man.” In which sense Castalio seems to have understood it, paraphrasing it thus: “As a man may know what kind of a face he hath if he will look into the water, so he may know what kind of a man he is if he will examine his conscience.” Another interpretation, adopted by some, is, “A man may see himself, while he looks upon other men, as well as know other men, by considering himself, and that as certainly as he can see his own face in the water, or in any other mirror;” there being little or no difference between one man and another by nature, but the difference being made by the grace of God.

27:15,16. The contentions of a neighbour may be like a sharp shower, troublesome for a time; the contentions of a wife are like constant rain. 17. We are cautioned to take heed whom we converse with. And directed to have in view, in conversation, to make one another wiser and better. 18. Though a calling be laborious and despised, yet those who keep to it, will find there is something to be got by it. God is a Master who has engaged to honour those who serve him faithfully. 19. One corrupt heart is like another; so are sanctified hearts: the former bear the same image of the earthly, the latter the same image of the heavenly. Let us carefully watch our own hearts, comparing them with the word of God. 20. Two things are here said to be never satisfied, death and sin. The appetites of the carnal mind for profit or pleasure are always desiring more. Those whose eyes are ever toward the Lord, are satisfied in him, and shall for ever be so. 21. Silver and gold are tried by putting them into the furnace and fining-pot; so is a man tried by praising him. 22. Some are so bad, that even severe methods do not answer the end; what remains but that they should be rejected? The new-creating power of God's grace alone is able to make a change. 23-27. We ought to have some business to do in this world, and not to live in idleness, and not to meddle with what we do not understand. We must be diligent and take pains. Let us do what we can, still the world cannot be secured to us, therefore we must choose a more lasting portion; but by the blessing of God upon our honest labours, we may expect to enjoy as much of earthly blessings as is good for us.

As we see our own face when we look on the mirror-like surface of the water, so in every heart of man we may see our own likeness. In spite of all diversities we come upon the common human nature in which we all alike share. Others see in the reference to the reflection in the water the thought that we judge of others by ourselves, find them faithful or the reverse, as we ourselves are.

The sense is either,

1. As the image of a man’s face in the water answers to his natural face who looks into it; or, as in water one man’s face is like another’s, the difference of men’s faces being not there visible: so one man resembles another, either in the temper of his mind or body, in which many men are alike one to another; or in the corruption of his nature, in which all are alike. Or,

2. As a man may see his own face if he look into the water, which is nature’s looking-glass, or into any other looking glass; so a man may discern his own heart, if he look into those glasses whereby it discovers itself; if he examine his thoughts and inclinations, together with the general course of his actions. Or,

3. As the face of a man standing by the waters is visible not only to himself, but to others, by the shadow or image of it in the waters; so the heart of a man is in some measure discernible, not only to himself, but to others also, who observe his disposition and carriage.

As in water face answereth to face,.... As water is as a looking glass, in which a man may behold his own face and another's; or as the face in the water answers to the face of a man, and there is a great likeness between them. All things through water appear greater, as Seneca (m) observes, and so more clear and plain;

so the heart of man to man; one man's heart may be seen and discerned in some measure by another, as by his countenance; for though, as the poet (n) says, "frontis nulla fides", yet the countenance is often the index of the mind, though not an infallible one; wrath and anger in the breast may be seen in the face, as were in Cain's; thus Jacob saw some resentment at him in the mind of Laban, and judged he had some design of mischief against him by the change of his countenance; also what is in the heart of man is discerned by what comes out of it, by his words, and also by his actions; yea, a man may know in a good measure what is in another man's heart, by what he finds in his own: the word of God is a glass, or medium of vision, and like water, in which a man's face is seen, through which a man sees his own heart; the law is a glass, in which an enlightened person sees not only the perfections of God, the nature of righteousness, but also his sin, and the sinfulness of it; this glass mother magnifies nor multiplies his sins, but sets them in a true light before him, by which he discerns heart sins, and sees and knows the plague of his heart; and the Gospel is a glass, wherein he beholds the glory of Christ, sees and can discern whether Christ is formed in him, and he has the grace of the Spirit of God wrought in his soul, as faith, hope, love, repentance, humility, self-denial, &c. moreover, as the face seen in the water is similar to a man's face, so the hearts of men are alike, not merely in a natural sense, see Psalm 33:15; but in a moral and spiritual sense the hearts of unregenerate men are alike, and answer to each other; for they are all equally corrupted, one and depraved; the heart of every man is desperately wicked; the imaginations of the thoughts of the hearts or wicked men, one and all of them, are only evil, and that continually; their affections are inordinately the same, they love and hate the same persons and things; their minds and consciences are all defiled; their understandings are darkened; their wills are averse to that which is good, and bent on that which is evil: and so the hearts of good men are alike; they have all one heart and one way given them; their experiences agree as to the work of grace and conversion; they are all made sensible of sin, the evil of it, and danger by it; they are all brought off of their own righteousness, and are led to Christ to depend on him alone for righteousness, pardon, and eternal life; they are partakers of the same promises in the Gospel, and have the same enemies to grapple with, and the same temptations, trials, and exercises from sin, Satan, and the world; and they have the same things put into their hearts, the laws of God, the doctrines of Christ, and the several graces of the Spirit of Christ; so that there cannot be a greater likeness between a man's face and that seen in the water, than there is between the heart of one saint and another; the hearts of Old and New Testament saints, and of all in all ages and places, answer to one another. The Targum paraphrases it to a sense quite the reverse,

"as waters and as faces which are not like one to another, so the hearts of the children of men are not like one to another;''

and to the same sense are the Septuagint, Syriac, and Arabic versions.

19. in water] This rendering of A.V., which is retained in R.V. text, gives a good and pregnant meaning: As truly as the face seen in the water resembles the face of which it is the reflection, so truly does the heart of one man correspond to that of another in all the essential features of our common nature.

There is, however, another rendering, supported by many competent authorities and adopted in R.V. marg., viz.:

As water sheweth face to face,

So the heart sheweth man to man.

The meaning then will be that the heart, like the water, is the medium by which we behold the image of our fellow man, the mirror in which we see his character. He is to us what our heart makes him. We judge of others by ourselves. A sordid nature or ruffled temper, like turbid or unsettled water, will give a broken and distorted image: it cannot conceive the idea of true generosity or genuine worth. On the other hand a pure heart will give to its possessor a true perception not only of man but of God Himself (St Matthew 5:8).

Pulpit Commentary

Verse 19. - As in water face answereth to face, so the heart of man to man; Vulgate, Quomodo in aquis resplendent vultus prospicientium, sic corda hominum manifesta sunt prudentibus. As in clear water the face of the gazer is reflected, so man finds in his fellow man the same feelings, sentiments, passions, which he has himself. He sees in others the likeness of himself; whatever he knows himself to be, he will see others presenting the same character. Self-knowledge, too, leads to insight into others' minds; "for what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him?" (1 Corinthians 2:11). There is a solidarity in human nature which enables us to judge of others by ourselves. The difficulties in the construction and wording of the sentence do not affect the interpretation. They are, however, best met by rendering, with Delitzsch, "As it is with water, face corresponds to face, so also the heart of man to man." Septuagint, "As faces are not like faces, so neither are the thoughts of men;" which is like the saying of Persius, 'Sat.,' 5:52 -

"Mille hominum species, et rerum discolor usus;

Velle suum cuique est, nec voto vivitur uno." Proverbs 27:19

Keil and Delitzsch Biblical Commentary on the Old Testament

19 As it is with water, face correspondeth to face,

So also the heart of man to man.

Thus the traditional text is to be translated; for on the supposition that כּמּים must be used for כּבמּים, yet it might not be translated: as in waters face corresponds to face (Jerome: quomodo in aquis resplendent vultus respicientium), because כּ (instar) is always only a prep. and never conj. subordinating to itself a whole sentence (vid., under Psalm 38:14). But whether כּמּים, "like water," may be an abridgment of a sentence: "like as it is with water," is a question, and the translation of the lxx (Syr., Targ., Arab.), ὥσπερ οὐχ ὅμοια πρόσωπα προσώποις, κ.τ.λ., appears, according to Bttcher's ingenious conjecture, to have supposed כאשר במים, from which the lxx derived כּאין דּמים, sicut non pares. The thought is beautiful: as in the water-mirror each one beholds his own face (Luther: der Scheme equals the shadow), so out of the heart of another each sees his own heart, i.e., he finds in another the dispositions and feelings of his own heart (Fleischer) - the face finds in water its reflection, and the heart of a man finds in man its echo; men are ὁμοιοπαθεῖς, and it is a fortunate thing that their heart is capable of the same sympathetic feelings, so that one can pour into the heart of another that which fills and moves his own heart, and can there find agreement with it, and a re-echo. The expression with ל is extensive: one corresponds to another, one belongs to another, is adapted to the other, turns to the other, so that the thought may be rendered in manifold ways: the divinely-ordained mutual relationship is always the ground-thought. This is wholly obliterated by Hitzig's conjecture כּמוּם, "what a mole on the face is to the face, that is man's heart to man," i.e., the heart is the dark spot in man, his partie honteuse. But the Scripture nowhere speaks of the human heart after this manner, at least the Book of Proverbs, in which לב frequently means directly the understanding. Far more intelligible and consistent is the conjecture of Mendel Stern, to which Abrahamsohn drew my attention: כּמּים הפּנים לפנים, like water (viz., flowing water), which directs its course always forward, thus (is turned) the heart of man to man. This conjecture removes the syntactic harshness of the first member without changing the letters, and illustrates by a beautiful and excellent figure the natural impulse moving man to man. It appears, however, to us, in view of the lxx, more probable that כּמּים is abbreviated from the original כאשׁר במים (cf. Proverbs 24:29).
