VILLAIN REVIEW: MONIKA  FROM: Doki Doki Literature Club!

Biography

Everyone already knows the premise behind Doki Doki Literature Club!, so I won't be going into it fully. In short, Monika was the club president of the Literature Club who is slowly revealed to actually be self-aware. Due to her not being given a route of her own, Monika corrupts the character files to make the other girls in the club seem less appealing. When that does not work, Monika instead deletes the character files and overhauls the game. If you delete Monika, she has a realization and tries to make amends, but that doesn't work. Yadda, yadda, yadda.

Personality

At best, she at first comes across as hopeful and pleasant to the player, and even when the truth is revealed, she nevertheless remains affable enough. One could get the impression that she might have overall been a better person if the circumstances did not work against her.

Ultimately, where my issue really lies is how sympathetic she is. Sure, I am aware that she was made self-aware because of her being the club president and how she felt she was the only "real" character in the game. But the extent to which she goes in trying to achieve her goals largely takes her out of the sympathetic line for me. You could make the argument of "well, the other girls were nothing more than computer programs!" but that excuse does not ring true with me. I mean there are some instances in the VN where the girls seem to be catching on that something was going wrong (need I bring up Sayori's poem consisting of the repetitive words "Get out of my head?"). To me, I always interpreted Monika's insistence that they weren't real to be her desperate attempt at trying to deny culpability. It just sounds like practically any excuse someone would make to try to avoid the most severe of punishments. Sure, I may have influenced that guy into killing themselves, but it was ultimately their own decision not mine!

I honestly felt her last-minute redemption to also be rushed. She only realizes the errors of her ways only when she herself gets deleted. Sure, she does admit that she still has access to the files, but even then, it was a meaningless proposition because the bad things in the game happen anyway even if she evicted herself from the game. Villains having last minute redemptions always peeved me off because of how forced they are.

And then there's the whole "but she's complex" argument which I never agreed with. Sure, the VN is a meta-fictional deconstruction of romance simulation games and subverts several of the cliches of that genre, but to me, Monika was merely a psychotic character. The self-awareness aspect of the game isn't even original either as a 2013 game called You Me and Her did the same thing, but I felt it was more effective.

Abilities

She has command control abilities where she is able to manipulate the game's files in a way that can be considered the equivalence of reality warping. Due to her being the club president, Monika is aware of being a fictional character in a visual novel, which drove her insane to put it plainly. Honestly felt that in this case it almost made Monika OP if not for the fact that you can delete her file, or you can delete it from the beginning which causes a game over. Though from what I have heard, the game developers did that to make it relatively easier for the player to figure out.

Appearance

Brown hair and ponytail tied with a big white hair bow. Emerald eyes alongside the school uniform. Though what I feel is worth pointing out is that her wearing black stockings does give a subtle indication that she was different from the other girls.

VILLAIN REVIEW: SATOU MATSUZAKA  From: Happy Sugar Life Voiced by:  Kana Hanazawa

Biography

According to the manga, Satou Matsuzaka came to live with her aunt after the death of her mother and her father's absence. Due to her Aunt being the way she is, Satou essentially became a sociopath. Satou had spent her days trying to find "love" which did amount to also doing unsavory things like sleeping around. But she still felt unfulfilled. That is until one day when she met Shio.

Personality

Satou at first appears to be a bubbly young lady who catches a lot of peoples' attention especially when she started to work out at cat-themed cafes. Beneath that, however, belies a sociopathic girl who looks down on others for being "dirty" or "impure." Besides Shio, Satou does not remotely care for other people and uses them as her pawns. The only other person that she appeared to care for was Shoko, but even then, she nevertheless killed her when she feared that she would go to the cops. At the same time, though, as she was going to set the body on fire as part of her plan to escape, she does display a small hint of regret that it had to be this way.

With Shio, ultimately, her relationship with her is familial. Sure, they claim to be "lovers," but Satou really acts more like a mother figure for Shio with cooking for her; working two jobs for her; providing her with a semi-decent household, etc. If anything, Satou seems to think that she is in love with Shio but she confused it with having a romantic relationship with Shio. Even with the whole "marriage" thing, it amounts to traveling the world with Shio and doing other mundane things.

In short, Satou comes off as pretty tragic. Despite what she had become, it is relatively easy to see that she became that way because of her upbringing.

Abilities

Manipulation is one of her signature skills. She is scarily good in how she is able to bend people to her will to do whatever she wanted. She is also wickedly intelligent for someone her age and is quick to adjust her plans when a problem comes up. My favorite of this is when she made two thugs lower their guard by putting on her bubbly girl mask before killing both of them to retrieve Shio.

Ultimately, Satou opts to use manipulation and blackmail to make her ends meet, but she isn't squeamish at having to kill which she often does when catching others off guard. The manga shows that she can stand her ground, so that's a plus.

Appearance

She has pink hair and red eyes. Bubblegum-colored hair that she keeps in two small buns.

I recently read the manga happy sugar life which my friend @gyozasauce likes, I watched the anime first but when I read the entire manga I realized that it had more information than the anime like all books and movies are. I was planning on doing a comic with Shio and Satou traditionally but I’m not sure if it’s gonna be liked or not 🤔.
