I'LL HELP WITH THIS! clover, what can you tell me about 999? i've been thinking i want to play it and i've been trying very hard not to spoil myself on it! what do you like about it?

ahh yay thank you!! gosh wow that sounds troublesome tho o3o not a lot of people (read: me) tag for 999 spoilers much anymore seein how many years it's been out :B but uhmm hm!

i first played 999 summer of 2011, and i think my impetus was that i was already friends with tumblr users twergo & frickinakane, two big names in tumblr 999 fandom, through gt fandom. plus i mean you say 'ds game with as many words as a decent-size novel' and i am on that like fluffer on nutter

you know, thinking about it, there's a certain unique thing about the ze games that really brings it up my alley. just like any other similar game, i could divide it into the well-built characters & their relationships, the plot, the writing, the puzzles, the graphics, the music... each of those have their pluses & minuses, right, & can be rated on separate scales

but what to me made 999 -- & vlr, but thinking back to that summer while i was playing/after i'd just finished -- what makes it stand out to me in a memorable way is honestly all the sciencey stories. i mean, that's not quite right, cause there's a lot of stories from philosophy & history & such. but mostly it's science, or the pseudoscience that the games lean on suspension of disbelief to have you almost going "... is that real? is that a real thing?"

it's the kind of things that start cropping up here around 0:36. (no spoilers, it's the opening video to the game :B) it's the things like -- ok in an attempt to avoid spoilers, these are the things uchikoshi, the main writer, said he 'wrote down in the ideas notebook' for vlr (that weren't in the game): "Dissipative system, Monty Hall problem, Gödel’s incompleteness theorems, Toxoplasmosis, Folie à deux, Capgras delusion, Fregoli delusion, Sally-Anne test, and Project MKUltra."

it's like a friggin! wiki walk! to some of the coolest parapsychologyish articles. have you read scott westerfeld? especially his lesser-known peeps/so yesterday. (check this out if not ouo.) his writing reminds me a lot of this particular spicy subset of the whole enchilada. john green sometimes i guess too but i don't like him as much
