Incurred a cross just before getting up thinking of Miss W [Walker] very fine morning Fahrenheit 51.° at 8 3/4 breakfast at 9 1/4 with Marian - civil Note from Mr. Waterhouse with the catalogue of Mr. Radcliffe's (quondam Rouge Croix) catalogue of MSS [manuscripts] and letters &c. now selling at the 'prices affixed by Thomas Thorpe, no. [number] 38, Bedford Street, Covent Garden, London' 1834. the widow is in a madhouse and her scamp of a son (said Mr. Parker yesterday) takes this means of raising money -

from 10 1/2 to 12 1/4 in my walk - delightful morning - read prayers and sermon 2 Mr. Knight volume i. to my aunt and Oddy - my aunt poorly - saw her leg dressed - I think the sore rather larger, but as Oddy thought it much the same glad to withhold my own opinion - asleep for 1/4 hour - came to my study at 2 - wrote out yesterday and so far of today till 2 3/4 - Mr. Sunderland came about 4 p.m. - Told me the wound was certainly rather larger but my aunt's pulse very favourable - again particularly desired him not to come less seldom than twice a week - as my aunt so dislikes taking the anodyne draughts (thinks they prevent her sleeping) thought it would be better to recommend suppositories to answer the purpose of the draughts -

Till 6, wrote 3 pp. [pages] and ends (small and close) to Mrs. Norcliffe copying the title page of the catalogue (25 of my close, small lines) and of the 3 or 4 articles The long article chiefly concerning Mrs. N- [Norcliffe] no. [number] 546, and copying or giving sufficient extracts from articles 638 799 and 839 (Radcliffe, Wake, Wray) - the widow in a lunatic asylum &c. as above -

'I may perhaps be within York of you again before quite the end of the month - it depends upon my aunt's continuing as at present - She suffers a great deal; but I have no fear of immediate danger; but if I have a day or 2 at command, I shall hope to see you again - we talk of going to Duncombe park' -

cannot be long absent - shall not be off (if at all) before after-post-time on Saturday the 29th. instant

and wrote to 'Mr. Thomas Thorpe' to desire him to send me no. [number] 467, Lister pedigree, £2.2.0, of the catalogue if still unsold; if not, to inform me who is the purchaser - on receipt of the papers will immediately an order on Messers Hammerleys for the money - 'I am, sir, &c. &c. &c.' -

dinner at 6 1/4 then coffee - Marian came to me - staid down talking to her till 8 - then wrote the last 20 lines and sent off at 8 35/.. my letter to 'Mrs. Norcliffe Langton hall Malton' yorks and my letter to 'Mr. Thomas Thorpe 38 Bedford Street Covent Garden London Post Paid' - and note with the catalogue in parcel to to 'John Waterhouse Esquire Wellhead' Dear sir - Thanks ('particularly obliged') for the catalogue which I returned tonight for fear of being too late in the morning - much obliged for his ordering the catalogue for me at Whitleys - have written for the 2 guinea lot - united Kind compliments to his family party - 'very truly yours A Lister' -

read from page 508 to 560 end of 'Waldensian Researches during a 2nd visit to the Vaudois of Piemont. with an introductory inquiry into the Antiquity and purity of the Waldensian church and some account of the compacts with the ancient princes of Piemont, and the treaties between the English government and the house of Savoy, in virtue of which this sole relic of the primitive church in Italy has continued to assert its religious independence. Very fine morning Fahrenheit 54 1/2˚ at 7 3/4 a.m. in my study – out at 7 3/4 with one or other till near 10 – then wrote and sent at 11 by Matthew going to Miss Walker 1 page and ends of outside envelope of my letter and the other letters to ‘Miss Walker, Heworth Grange, York’ to say Joseph was just returned from Lidgate, the little girl had not had a good night, but was better this morning and Mr Robinson said there was no danger but she would be well in a few days – I therefore begged Miss Walker not to alarm herself or Sarah – Matthew to go by the Highflier at 12 –

Then wrote the following ‘Miss Lister is very much obliged to Mr Parker to the catalogue of Miss Currer’s library – the catalogue is very well done, and very interesting, and Miss Lister returns it with her but thinks, and hopes Mr Parker will be so good as excuse her having inadvertently kept it so long – Shibden Hall, Saturday morning, 10 May 1834’ to ‘Robert Parker Esquire’ – enclosed my note with the catalogue (large octavo), to Robert Parker Esquire, The Square’ and sent it by Joseph who went with Matthew to the coach to bring the young horse back he rode upon –

Packed up the things for Miss Walker and had all off at 10 55/.. at which hour breakfast – had Mr Washington almost immediately – told him Joseph Wilkinson had changed his mind about selling the field William Green’s cottage stands in, and was going to build in the top part of it – told Mr Washington merely to be on the look out, and if any building ground was to be sold there to get somebody to buy it for me – to be 1st conveyed to him (for if Joseph Wilkinson knew it was for me, he would not let me have it at any reasonable price) and then secondly to me – It was Samuel Holdsworth told Samuel Washington he could buy the Upper Brea coal at £10 per days work – had had it offered several times – not much dependence to be placed on Samuel Holdsworth –

Out again at 12 for above an hour – then asleep an hour in my study – then wrote and sent, by William Green at 3, the following to ‘Messers Parker and Adam solicitors, Halifax’ ‘Shibden Hall, Saturday 10 May 1834 – Sir I am much obliged to your note – as it does not suit Mrs Scatchard’s convenience to wait till after Friday, I would rather let the matter remain as it is – William Green is the bearer of the conveyance made to him by Mr Joseph Wilkinson – he (William Green) agrees to sell me his 2 cottages under one roof for one hundred pounds – Be so good as get the purchase deeds ready for signing as soon as you can – I am, Sir, etc. etc. etc. A Lister’ –

Joseph had brought me on his return from taking the note and parcel to Mr Parker a note from Mr Adam, to say, he (Mr Parker) had been from home this week but was expected home tomorrow – that Mr Stansfield had called on the part of Mrs Scatcherd ‘to endeavour to make some arrangement for the giving up possession of the Northgate house estate – I understand her proposal to be to give up the possession of the whole of the property on the 1st day of November next whether or not it be sold, and that the arrangement shall be agreed upon before Friday next’ – ‘there have been many applications to see the plan of the estate etc.’ – I do not expect to sell the property, supposing that my reserve bidding (10/. per yard = £10180+ or, if sold in the lump, £10000) will be too high – therefore I do not want to hurry about taking the remainder of Mrs Scatcherd’s lease which will expire 1 May 1836 – It would be difficult to let the house merely for 18 months, and by that time or there abouts I shall be ready to put up the property in lots –

In and out from 3 to 6 20/60 dinner at 6 1/2 – having had Pickells and his 2 men set out the railing between my father and Mr Carr, and ordered Pickells and his men and Charles Howarth’s nephew Carter to begin it the 1st thing on Monday morning – Joseph Booth waited on me at dinner 1st time –

Coffee – wrote the 1st 20 lines of today – then with my father and Marian and talking to the latter till near 10 – John had expressed to her the inconvenience of his leaving Conery for anywhere in township that his son John (aetat 10) might go free to Hipperholme school, to fit him to be educated at the gardener’s school at Leamington as as regular and upper gardener – Convinced Marian of his folly, but said I should save by it, and would from that moment give up the thought –

40 minutes with my aunt till 10 35/.. – she much better today – very fine day Fahrenheit 55˚ now at 11 p.m. –

Es ist nicht nur die Republik, sondern das Land Frankreich selbst als Zivilisation, das vom islamistischen Terror anvisiert wird.WELT: Haben Sie den Eindruck, dass die letzten beiden Attentate, in Conflans und Nizza, eine beispiellose Wende darstellen?Alain Finkielkraut: Der Terrorismus ist kein Phänomen in sich. Er ist Teil eines Ganzen, und dieses Ganze ist der Hass auf die französische Zivilisation. Das Verbrechen von Nizza bestätigt diese Analyse. Von einem „Allahu akbar“ zum nächsten, vom Attentäter Mohamed Merah (er tötete im März 2012 in Frankreich sieben Menschen, darunter drei Kinder, Anm. d. Red.) bis zum Attentat von Nizza wird Frankreich in seiner jüdischen, seiner säkularen und in seiner christlichen Dimension ins Visier genommen. Wir können noch so sehr und voller guten Willens dagegen protestieren und leidenschaftlich gegen jegliche Diskriminierung ankämpfen – der Feind ist da, und er verzeiht uns nicht, dass wir so sind, wie wir sind.Die Enthauptung von Samuel Paty wurde nicht vom Islamischen Staat (IS) geplant oder in Auftrag gegeben. Sie trägt auch nicht den Stempel irgendeiner anderen nationalen oder internationalen Organisation. Dennoch war sie auch nicht die Tat eines einsamen Wolfes. Diesem Angriff ging eine Intrige voraus, an der mindestens ein Vater eines Schülers beteiligt war, ein antisemitischer Prediger sowie Schüler, die dem Mörder den Lehrer gegen Geld gezeigt haben, obwohl dieser keinen Hehl daraus machte, dass er ihn demütigen und schlagen wolle, weil er im Unterricht Karikaturen des Propheten gezeigt hatte. Dieses Attentat beweist die Verbindung zwischen dem gewöhnlichen Islamismus und dem blutigen Terror. Es wird danach schwierig sein, die angebliche Schande der „Islamfeindlichkeit“ auf die abzuwälzen, die es wagen, der Wahrheit ins Gesicht zu sehen.WELT: Werden die sogenannten islamolinken Ansichten in der öffentlichen Meinung nicht immer weniger?Alain Finkielkraut: Von den letzten vier Attentaten, die auf den radikalen Islam zurückzuführen sind, wurden drei von Flüchtlingen begangen. Wenn die Regierung jedoch ankündigt, die Bedingungen für das Asylrecht zu überprüfen, die automatische Familienzusammenführung infrage zu stellen und die Einwanderungspolitik ganz allgemein verschärfen zu wollen, werden sich alle Obersten Gerichtshöfe Europas gegen sie erheben. Durch eine gastfreundliche Politik soll die damalige Weigerung, während der düsteren Zeiten des 20. Jahrhunderts, jüdische Flüchtlinge aus Deutschland aufzunehmen, gesühnt werden. Und so legen die Richter, mit den allerbesten Absichten, gleichzeitig den Grundstein des neuen Antisemitismus. Ihnen folgen all diejenigen, Intellektuelle oder auch Publizisten, die sich wegen der „Sicherheitsmissbräuche“ des Rechtsstaates Sorgen machen.Das stützt sich auf eine trügerische Erinnerung. Als Beweis zitiere ich die von Thomas Mann 1936 geschriebenen Zeilen: „Was heute nottäte, wäre ein militanter Humanismus, von der Einsicht erfüllt, dass das Prinzip der Freiheit, der Duldsamkeit und des Zweifels sich nicht von einem Fanatismus, der ohne Scham und ohne Zweifel ist, ausbeuten und überrennen lassen darf; von der Einsicht, dass er das Recht nicht nur, sondern auch die Pflicht hat, sich zu wehren. Europa ist ein mit der humanistischen Idee eng und untrennbar verbundener Begriff. Europa wird nur sein, wenn der Humanismus seine Männlichkeit entdeckt und nach der Erkenntnis handelt, dass die Freiheit nicht zum Freibrief ihrer Todfeinde und ihrer Mörder werden darf.“ In einer Zeit, in der die Tugend der „Fürsorge“ das gesamte Spektrum der Moral einnimmt, hat diese Lektion in Humanismus kaum eine Chance, Gehör zu finden.WELT: Nach Emmanuel Macrons klarem Versprechen, die Meinungsfreiheit zu schützen, stellte Erdogan seine „geistige Gesundheit“ infrage und beschuldigte Frankreich der Islamophobie. Ist es nun auch an der Zeit, den türkischen Präsidenten mit offeneren Augen zu betrachten?Finkielkraut: Europa hat sich gegenüber der Türkei nie wie ein „christlicher Club“ verhalten. Stattdessen ist es Recep Tayyip Erdogan, der die Führungsrolle in der islamischen Welt übernehmen möchte, der eine Anpassung an die europäische Kultur für ein Verbrechen gegen die Menschlichkeit hält und den französischen Präsidenten mit Beleidigungen überschüttet, weil er in seinem Land Karikaturen des Propheten toleriert. Mit Erdogan bringt sich der politische Islam in Kampfposition. Und sein langfristiges Ziel ist nicht der Separatismus, sondern die Eroberung. „Die Minarette werden unsere Bajonette, die Kuppeln unsere Helme, die Moscheen unsere Kasernen und die Gläubigen unsere Soldaten sein,“ sagte er bereits, als er noch Bürgermeister in Istanbul war.WELT: Während der Gedenkfeier für den Lehrer Samuel Paty hat Emmanuel Macron mithilfe eines Zitats von Jean Jaurès betont, dass die Rolle der Schule darin besteht, „Republikaner heranzubilden“. Ist das wirklich die Rolle der Schule? Gibt man ihr damit nicht eine viel zu ehrgeizige Rolle, zu einer Zeit, in der sie sich bereits schwertut, grundlegendes Wissen zu vermitteln?Finkielkraut: Eine erst kürzlich durchgeführte Umfrage ergab, dass 74 Prozent der Muslime unter 25 Jahren das Religionsrecht über die Gesetze der Republik stellen. Nun beruht aber der Säkularismus, ein republikanisches Prinzip par excellence, auf der Unabhängigkeit des geistigen Lebens. Ohne die Anerkennung dieser Unabhängigkeit ist es unmöglich, jemanden zu unterrichten. Also müssen Republikaner erschaffen werden, um Wissen weitergeben zu können.WELT: Man hat den Eindruck, dass das Wort „Republik“ von unseren Politikern permanent verwendet wird, sehr viel seltener allerdings das Wort „Frankreich“. Haben Sie denselben Eindruck?Alain Finkielkraut: Die Republik, das sind universelle Werte. Frankreich, das ist eine Sprache, eine Literatur, ein Lebensstil, das sind Städte, Landschaften, Sehenswürdigkeiten und unvergleichliche Bauwerke. Heutzutage jedoch macht dieser Partikularismus eher Angst: Wir glauben vereinfacht, dass es kein „Wir“ ohne ein Ausschließen des „Ihr“ gibt, keine leibhaftige Heimat ohne ein Massengrab für Ausländer. Doch dem ist nicht so!Was heute mit so tödlichem Hass betrachtet wird, das ist nicht mehr nur die Republik, es ist die Nation, und es gäbe wohl nichts, was General de Gaulle mehr überrascht oder gar empört hätte, als diese Absicht, die Erstere im Namen des Antifaschismus auf der Ablehnung der Zweiten aufzubauen.WELT: Ein Heftchen mit Karikaturen von „Charlie Hebdo“ wird in den Klassen verteilt werden. Ist es bei aller Bereitschaft, die Meinungsfreiheit zu verteidigen, nicht doch ein Paradoxon, dass ausgerechnet eine satirische Zeitung, die bewusst respektlos ist, Teil eines schulischen Lehrplans wird? Muss man diese Karikaturen von „Charlie Hebdo“ zu etwas Heiligem erklären, weil sie von Terroristen ins Visier genommen wurden?Finkielkraut: Das Heftchen, von dem Sie sprechen, ist nicht Teil des Lehrplans, es ist die in Stein gemeißelte Inschrift, die von einer unglaublichen Tatsache kündet: Hier wurden Menschen ermordet, weil sie Zeichnungen veröffentlicht oder in einem Klassenzimmer kommentiert haben. Ich bin kein großer Anhänger von Karikaturen, weil ich glaube, dass sogar die härteste Kritik es nicht nötig hat, eine hässliche Darstellung von Gesichtern oder Körpern zu nutzen. Aber ich bin doch der Meinung, dass diese entsetzlichen Ereignisse ein Teil unseres kollektiven Gedächtnisses geworden sind und als solche berücksichtigt und weitergegeben werden müssen.WELT: Auf die „intellektuellen Komplizen“ des Islamismus zu deuten, zu behaupten, es gebe ein Kontinuum zwischen Worten und Taten – ist das nicht eine Bestrafung des freien Denkens, die Sie selbst auch bekämpft haben?Finkielkraut: Es gibt heutzutage an den Universitäten und auch in den Medien eine ganze Anzahl „nützlicher Idioten“, die glauben, dass sie den Schwachen helfen können, indem sie sich in den Dienst des expansiven Islams stellen. Diejenigen jedoch, zu denen auch ich gehöre, die ihre mitfühlende Unterwerfung anprangern, haben nicht im Geringsten vor, sie zum Schweigen zu bringen. Andererseits finden sie es aber „unerträglich“, wenn ein Redakteur der „extremen Rechten“ an einer Gesprächsrunde im Fernsehen teilnimmt. Da ich auf allen schwarzen Listen, die diese Zeitungen veröffentlichen und regelmäßig aktualisieren, ebenfalls auftauche, werde ich ebenfalls mit diesem Gütesiegel versehen. In ihren Augen ist Frankreichs Feind Nummer eins sein eigener faschistischer Dämon. Den man auslöschen muss, bevor es zu spät ist.WELT: Die US-Presse scheint der französischen Reaktion nach dem Attentat kritischer gegenüberzustehen und kritisiert ein gezieltes Vorgehen gegen „muslimische Gruppen“ („Washington Post“). Was halten Sie von diesem Unterschied zwischen der französischen und der US-amerikanischen Meinung?Alain Finkielkraut: Die „New York Times“ schrieb: „Die französische Polizei schießt auf einen Mann und tötet ihn nach einem Angriff mit einem Messer.“ Für diese große Zeitung handelt es sich bei dem, was in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine passiert ist, nicht um die Enthauptung eines Lehrers, sondern um zügellose Polizeigewalt.Trump ist nicht das einzige Problem, das die Vereinigten Staaten haben und das die USA für die Welt darstellen. Genau wie Russell Banks, Richard Ford und all die anderen amerikanischen Schriftsteller, die sich große Sorgen machen und deshalb aus ihren Elfenbeintürmen herauskommen, habe auch ich Angst vor diesem „Père Ubu“ (eine fiktive Person, die 1890 vom französischen Schriftsteller Alfred Jarry erfunden wurde; ein Symbol der Habsucht und Karikatur des blutrünstigen, lächerlichen Tyrannen, Anm. d. Red.), der da eine zweite Amtszeit im Weißen Haus anstrebt.Aber im Gegensatz zu ihnen habe ich nicht weniger Angst vor einer amerikanischen Linken, die auf dem Campus ausgebildet wurde, wo schon seit langer Zeit ein ideologischer Wahnsinn anstelle der allgemeinen Kultur getreten ist. Und ich habe noch mehr Angst, weil ich nicht weiß, welche Verwüstungen diese Ideologie in den französischen Universitäten angerichtet hat. Wir sind noch lange nicht aus dem Gröbsten heraus.

Fine but dull morning Fahrenheit 48 1/2º inside and outside at 8 3/4 – Breakfast at 8 50/’’ in about 1/2 hour – Just setting about work (arranging things) upstairs when Mr. S.[Samuel] Washington came – Final paying off – Some time A-[Ann] and I with him –

All ended satisfactorily – Glad to have mentioned the Rookes engine coal bid – It seems the coal under the 2 little fields up to the road belongs to Mr. Whiteley the coal under the whole estate of which Lower Rookes originally formed part, being reserved and sold to Mr. Rawson and by him resold to Mr. Whiteley –

S.[Samuel] W.[Washington] would consider of the value – Thinks only about an acre to get belonging to Captain and Mrs. S-[Sutherland], and that so near the surface, it would cost a good deal to make the ground good again – Mr. Whiteley wants to have the loose from now paying a pound a year for it till he wants to make use of it –

A-[Ann] read what Mrs. S-[Sutherland] wrote respecting this in her last letter – Better to let the matter rest for the present – For the S-s[Sutherlands] thinking of £10 a year from the present and for a term of only 7 years were not likely to consent to Whiteley’s plan – S.[Samuel] W.[Washington] shewed how Whiteley by keeping a loose of his open might much benefit the Sutherlands – This to be mentioned by A-[Ann] so that both sides might make things as agreeable as they could –

S.[Samuel] W.[Washington] said he once had £320 per acre bid for the coal (Lightcliffe bed 27 in.inches thick) on the other side of the Leeds and Whitehall road belonging to the S-s[Sutherlands] by Stocks of Lightcliffe – I said he would never have it bid again – To which he seemed to agree – He is to set out the 1200 yards each of stone for Messers Hemingway this afternoon –

Ordered copy of plan of the Township of Southowram – To be on 4 small sheets of paper – Given to Whitely to mount in 4 x 6 parts or folds, and done up in case – to be done in 6 weeks – Price £9 (nine pounds) – To be sent to Hammerslys – All parted agreeably – My going down – Ordering the plan – What was about stone and coal, &c. &c. seemed to satisfy S.[Samuel] W.[Washington] and A-[Ann] and I were all went off finally so well –

I wanted but the mere plan of the Township – But asked S.[Samuel] W.[Washington] to make all the stone quarries stone-colours, and to dot in pencil all the lines of coal-throws he knew of – And just to write on a separate piece of paper the amount of value at which each of my farms &c. stand in the Towns book – Do not want a copy of this book – Which has cost A-[Ann] for Hipperholme cum Brighouse 4 guineas + about 30/- for book &c. –

fine mild damp windy morning Fahrenheit 41 1/4 ° inside study and breakfast at 9 3/4 in 1/2 hour –

then out – in the stable and about – Captain better but dullish yet – his 2 eight ounce doses of Epsom salts yesterday do not seem to have done him much good in the purgatory way –

Booth came before 11 – went with him to Listerwick to meet Holt – measured the scale at the water wheel = 500 yards – all agreed that 2 per yard for filling would be enough - therefore say filling 4 guinnies driving rain great part of the time –

then plaining listerwick coal shades and walling and black smith’s shop – the wall against John Oates’s house and forming the back of the shades and all along that side will be 12 foot high from the bottom near the steam Engine house saying from 12 at the deepest to about 9 feet – shade 6 yards diminishing to 5 yards wide and then more shade diminishing to not 3 or 3 1/2 yards wide towards and near to the entrance gate – Robert Mann asked 3/. per rood (face measure – mason’s rood) for walling I to find stone and carting – I proposed 2 feet thick in the bottom with backing against the solid and a 2 feet broad setting in at the surface to which Booth assented as quite sufficient –

Robert Fielden fireman came – brought good character from the Low moor engine and what we thought more of good character from Messers James Ackroyde and son – and besides Robert mann knows and speaks highly of him – not certain whether Holt enjoyed him or not, but I said he was to engage him if he thought proper – left Holt at Listerwick and took Booth to the 2 quarries –

Ann rode up to Hipperholme Lane ends at 2 to say if Samuel Washington did not see me she had told him to bring the rents to Shibden at 3 –

ordered about another little baring (about 15 or 20 yards super) at Hipperholme quarry (Ann’s) and then to sunwood quarry – Jack Green Wiliam Lord and Thomas Sutcliffe (and Robert Mann had been with us and returned) making the road good to the foot of yesterday – ordered about this –

then to Mitham – saw Samuel Washington for a moment and brought away the rents and took Booth to the meer and explained my idea about a new clow close up to the boat house –

then in returning Mr Thomas Greenwood came up to me at the little entrance into the walk – stood some time talking there – then walked towards the house – Greenwood wished good afternoon (seeing I had no intention of asking him into the house) and went away about 4 –

he had come I suppose to settle or to pay his rent and have his bills paid – I told him I would send Booth to him to settle these matters tomorrow morning – Greenwood leading to the subject I mentioned the message I had received tho’ Mr Samuel Washington and the grievance about the masons work that close under the hotel just before I went from home – at 1st Greenwood said he had taken the bit of ground there – on convincing him he not taken it and repeating the circumstances, he owned it was on sufference that he was to have put a log or two of mahogany there’ – and said the men had put the stones there with out his orders – he finding that however not tenable said he would keep the ground if he might have a road made – I said I wanted to know what he would rather do – he might keep the ground or give it up just as he thought best – he said if a man lost by a thing one year he ought to have a chance of making it up another – it seemed he wished to keep the land – I said Booth was to see into the matter of the road tomorrow and let me know about it and also to see about walling out the cottages at the top – Greenwood had said at first he had offered me £2 a year for the bit of ground in dispute – I said I remembered nothing of that but would not have let it at any price – Greenwood was so agitated at one time I thought he would have cried – but the quietness and calmness of my manner passed this off and kept all straight he saw I was not pleased and not inclined for useless talk – poor Greenwood! as I said to Booth afterwards I felt (at heart) sorry for him – tho’ he was rightly served for his foolishness –

Booth had cold meat for dinner in the house keepers – then had him upstairs – gave him the bills owing to Greenwood and an account of rent owing – only a few shillings between us – for him to pay if he had still the pew in the old church – it was 5 when Booth went away –

then had Joseph Mann who came for a bill to get receipted and to tell Ann the Landymeere strats he had bored thro – the 3 Manns John Robert and Joseph have taken Mr Freeman’s quarry –

dressed – dinner about 6 1/4 – coffee – read the newspaper – Ann read her 2 pages of French and went to bed at 10 1/2 - I remained 20 minutes longer and finished all the above of today –

windy day with occasional driving showers till between 1 and 2 p.m. afterwards fair – Fahrenheit 40 ½ ° inside and 39 ½ outside at 11 p.m.

Gave Hotspur oat cake – At 8 40/60 went to the workmen – While I was there (standing at a little distance) Mr. Steel came (near 11). Told George Robinson he was authorized by Mr. Lewis Alexander to propose to George R– [Robinson] paying one pound a year to my uncle if he would let them have the road to Belvidere, and was authorized also to say that in this case he would answer for their being no opposition to our footpath – He owned the new one was the better road, but it was not nearer, and they would never give up – Owned he did not like the Shibden Hall lane – He never did like it – It was a dark disagreeable road – James Sykes overheard him say all this –

Got home to breakfast at 11 1/2 – Breakfast at 11 40/60 – Staid talking to my uncle and aunt – went upstairs at 12 40/60 – From then to 2 10/60 read aloud (to myself) the first 16 pages volume 3 Rousseau Confessions – Went to the workmen again at 2 20/60 and staid with them till they gave up a little after 6 –

George R– [Robinson] having sent his nephew Samuel Sowden to copy Mr. Lewis Alexander’s notice of appeal against our footpath pasted up against Coley church door, brought the copy home with me – Jackman finished the causeway today from the bridge to the Dolt style – The lane thro’ the wood covered with scraplings, and ready for ashes tomorrow – But Mr. Huntress was at Lower Brea this afternoon, and told George R– [Robinson] our great wall next to the garden, in spite of the 4 buttresses and support-foot-walling, was come down about xmas [Christmas] – Got home at 6 1/2 – Talked to my uncle and aunt 20 minutes – Dinner at 7 –

BACKGROUND/HISTORY

Seth was only two years old when his family life erupted into chaos. It was during a family outing to stargaze when Moriah’s new reality began to set in. As her limbs contorted in pain, Kaizer grabbed his toddler and ran to the car. There they waited out the gruesome terror until Moriah was herself once more. Fearing what this would mean, Kaizer devised a plan to fake Moriah’s death. As his finances began to spiral out of grief, he was forced to give Seth up for adoption. The result was the placement in his uncle’s house.

At the age of twelve, he began to feel a similar attraction to boys as he does with girls. It was slight confusion but he paid no attention to it. It wasn’t until a few months later when he began to develop a crush on his best friend that he realized something might be ‘wrong’ with him. He took a risk with his friend and found such affections returned. However, this wasn’t to be a happy occasion as his father beat him severely upon finding out.

He has dated Corbyn Reyes (ages 14 and 15, respectfully). This only lasted for 3 months as their personalities continued to clash. It was intense, explosive and with a force of wills to match. It didn’t help that they didn’t share similar moral values or understand each other’s signs of affection. They broke up on hostile terms.

The drama involving the Silva’s and Drystan’s have been carried down through the centuries with most of it being forgotten by the Silva’s. The Drystan’s, however, maintain that this feud was the result of Silva greed and impotence. No one really knows the story. With the somewhat-recent history involving the Silvas, the members of the Drystan family are assured in their ascension to surpass them; as is their right.

PERSONALITY

Charismatic: Sociable and somewhat understanding, Seth prides himself on the ability to win over almost anyone. It helps that he can read a person generally well.

Condescending. This is a part of his arrogance as he tends to talk down to those who he believes to be inferior to himself. This is obvious in his actions but, more often, it is evident in his manner of speech.

Diplomatic: This comes from being raised by a politician. He is sensitive (only to matters that counts) and is able to deal with the general public effectively and efficiently. This is provided nothing bigoted leaves his mouth.

Hedonistic: The finer things in life were made for him. Check the receipt. He was created for a lavish lifestyle. It may be a weakness but he’s fine with that.

Prejudiced: Muggle-borns and werewolves. There are probably more but these are the most common. He isn’t a fan of half-breed creatures and considers them to be revolting.
