His Persona Is Wavering
Impressions; Chapter 50
The mystery Mama has reappeared. Surprisingly, she calls Doumeki by his first name. Doumeki asks if some customers who caused trouble at her club were part of Okuyama-gumi. Kamiya, who has a grim expression (emerged blood vessel which indicates his mood is drawn in his speech bubble), appears to be trying to interrupt Doumeki, possibly because Okuyama-gumi’s turning against Sakura Family is still inside information. In contrast, Mama smoothly replies that they seemed to be old customers of her club. It implies that she has some inside information about the Family.
Back in high school age, when Kageyama got a girlfriend, Yashiro stepped down from him. He had shown no jealousy (Tadayoedo sizumazu, saredo naki mo sezu, vol.1, the translated title: Though they drift, they do not sink, but nor do they sing). When Aoi showed up, he recognized at one glance that she was a woman, and immediately presumed that she must have been Doumeki’s girlfriend (ch.2, vol.1). Yashiro is not an autonomous, solid gay man. He does not substantially accept his sexuality and more… As far as Aoi was a woman, he must have felt he was no match for her. And he was kind to Aoi in his way. He offended Doumeki, and if Doumeki had left him, that would have been fine, since it was what Aoi had wanted. Yashiro likely feels the same about even Niki. When Doumeki did not respond to Niki at the entrance of Tsunakawa’s house, giving priority to guests, Yashiro was the one who responded to her protest instead (ch.42, vol.7).
During this encounter with Mama, Yashiro maintains a poker face and keeps observing her. A woman, a real woman, and a womanly woman enhances Doumeki’s masculinity. Yashiro’s glancing expression can never be interpreted as a resignation but as disgust and jealousy. If that is the case, it would be a progress for him. It can be said that means he is trying to accept his sexuality or himself.
Being asked under Doumeki’s body, “You chose me because you wanted me to do this, right?”, Yashiro’s face turns straight for a moment. A pertinent query. Why did I grab Doumeki? However, he quickly conceals himself behind the familiar masque and retorts that he cannot put much expectation on Kamiya in this facet (Doumeki will provide better pleasure than Kamiya while he does not actually care who does it). Doumeki is listening with a slight tilt of his head. His close-up eyes look unexpectedly temperate. He has received some recognition from Yashiro only for his performance in bed. That would be the answer to Doumeki’s query. Doumeki would like to say... Is that all there? Or, even so, you have gone to Inami, too...
Demonstrating his skills without expression, Doumeki points out that Yashiro has a lecherous body. Then Yashiro barely refutes. That would be another step forward for him. Despite his advocating for ‘lechery,’ now his true face is peeking out from under his persona. Finding traces of bondage on Yashiro’s wrist, which are the marks by Inami, Doumeki clearly shows irritation. He ties Yashiro up and asks if Yashiro likes to be bound or prefers to be treated with tenderness. Yashiro looks to have a straight face again.
Later on, Yashiro cannot stay still, recalling the question. The fluctuation of his persona makes him uneasy. He casually excuses himself and heads for Kido, who has been hiding out. Kido is seemed to be one of the men Yashiro hooked up with at the casino (ch.47). But in less than no time, Doumeki appears on the scene, tosses Kido aside, grabs Yashiro by the arm, and tries to drag him away. The man is there, yet he seems faceless -- as if he is not human. The man grabs Yashiro with such force that his fingers dig into Yashiro’s arm -- unable to resist the force. The man is angry -- Doumeki is critically angry. Yashiro must have had recollections just like these. It dated from when he was seven years old. I think he is getting terrified at the end of chapter 50. He has been supposed to not fear violence or violent sex...

a visual analysis of saezuru c50
prefacing this with: I didn’t end up going to art school but I have done a lot of drawing, so these are just my personal notes and thoughts on yoneda’s visual language
I’m not sure if people will actually enjoy this kind of thing, or if it’s redundant… let me know either way!
I really enjoyed the saezuru notes @eidolon-azii writes, and Ive been wanting to throw out some ideas about the art bit. This is incredibly late but I hope someone will love these things with me
I… actually wanted to review chapter 52, but I got sidetracked and I guess this will be focused on chapter 50 instead!
Tumblr media
Yoneda uses many types of shading, along with lines, to create mood. Usually, she uses light, clean lines with white and black, and a wash of shading, which is consistent with normal lighting, as seem above.
This changes a bit when we get to moodier or more emotional scenes.
Tumblr media
Right after yashiro grabbed doumeki , we see a glow around doumeki, basically chiseling him out from the dark background. The halo of light serves as a focal point, drawing your eye to doumeki’s expression. His expression could be considered placid, and many characters from nanahara to kamiya have noted that he is hard to read. Bringing focus to this expression was a really great way to push the intrigue. We, from yashiro’s pov, are brought to wonder what doumeki is thinking about. Is he upset? Does he feel like he’s being pushed away again? What does he want to do now? Personally, I feel that the (faint) rough pencil shading brings the panel from a doumeki fashion shoot (which… he’s fucking gorgeous here, hello) to a really raw moment. It’s details like this that really control the mood.
We also see a tone shift when they go to “doumeki’s woman”’s club. Rather than shading consistent with the rest of the club or environment, we get liberal use of shading, with crescents of light left to indicate volume. In this context, it seems to convey a quiet sort of turmoil. You see that yashiro’s shading is often darker than his environment warrants… which is something that I’m really enjoying. The framing of yashiro in the center of the stairs with harsh shading is a lovely severe touch to set the dark mood he’s in while he’s probably grappling with jealousy
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Something I think we all need to commend sensei for is her incredible, sensuous shading. From her early doujin days, her shading has come leaps and become truly masterful— you can see the effort she has taken to study volume, and to convey the softness and suppleness of flesh. I can’t find this amazing panel of misumi’s old man abs, but somehow they looked to me to be amazingly soft… the slight slackness of collagen loss from the aging process on top of muscle. This sort of feeling is one of the hardest things to convey visually, and I really admire her touch… IF ANYONE KNOWS WHERE THIS PANEL IS PLEASE TELL ME I’ve been crying over being loss of misumi’s old man abs for a while now!!!
Here are two panels from chapter 50 where there is also sensuous shading. In these two frames, there is a great use of highlights and shading to create volume. I love the way the doumeki’s hands and yashiro’s legs seem so real and full— you can imagine the plushness of the leg and the firmness of the hands as the light hits it. The gradient in the shading brings a softness to the otherwise sharply defined volume, making it dramatic but sensuous, which I would say is a signature for sensei is work in saezuru.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Note: sensei also occasionally does fully soft panels where the shading and the gradient are both done gently, but they are rare— likely because saezuru is not a soft story and cannot or should not be conveyed in that way
Another thing I really enjoy seeing yoneda use are what I will be calling “moments of impact”. These are composed of totally flat panels of high contrast colors: black, white, or flat shade. She uses clean, crisp lines, and the strength of the contrast is so great that the impact gives you a tiny pause. This is a moment that she wants you to see. She doesn’t use this style often, so when she does, I feel the need to pay attention. Below, both of these panels are cropped in a way such that you only see one singular action. Starkly, we see below a moment of rejection and a moment of protection.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
***
I can’t really think of anything else for this chapter, but I hope you enjoyed these panels and my thoughts on them! Stay winning (or crying, because I am tired and I really just want them to get together yesterday, for my peace of mind)

JEALOUSY
The main theme, the emotion that drives most of the action in Saezuru Chapter 50, is jealousy.
Before I start rambling, I want to point out the big takeaway here: If Doumeki and Yashiro didn’t have feelings for each other then they wouldn’t be jealous. They’re jealous because they care...but hoboy that jealousy makes them both possessive and wild. And that’s why we have all kinds of action in Chapter 50.
Let’s begin with the title page; it smacks of possession, Doumeki reaching out to grasp Yashiro’s throat but not quite connecting. To me, it symbolizes Doumeki wanting to control Yashiro, hold him close, hold him down, but he can’t quite do it because Yashiro is like a feral cat. The phrase is “Everything is about to break.” And that is soooo significant for many reasons: back in chapter 25, Yashiro begged Doumeki not to break him and Doumeki said he wouldn’t - he would never break Yashiro - but he hasn’t keep his word. Because Doumeki did break Yashiro, he ruined him for all other men to the point that Yashiro is currently impotent, and his body only reacts to Doumeki. Also, “don’t break me” is Yashiro asking for Doumeki to not be so gentle because it will break down the walls Yashiro has built around his psyche, the walls that block off his childhood abuse and the torrent of emotions he’s been holding back forever. The tender way Doumeki treated him in chapter 25 put a crack in those walls but with the Hirata situation and the timeskip Yashiro was able to keep running, to try and cope the way he used to, even if it wasn’t working and the cracks began to spider out. Once Doumeki reentered his life those cracks became bigger and bigger, because Doumeki won’t let Yashiro run to others and cope. He’s possessive, he keeps manhandling Yashiro and dragging him around, not letting him be Volume One Yashiro. In Doumeki’s eyes, Yashiro hasn’t changed. He’s still lascivious, promiscuous, dealing with dangerous people and acting out.
But parts of Doumeki have changed. The fog of his family trauma and prison life has left him. He’s stronger now, the sharpness he had before the timeskip has been honed to a fine point and he now has a powerful sense of self. Like I said in my last meta, Doumeki is an asset and he’s not going to stand by and watch like he did in chapter 2, he’s going to try and control Yashiro, break his walls down, break them apart.
Chapter 50 starts off where Chapter 49 ended: with Doumeki looming over Yashiro in bed. There’s a lot of give and take. Doumeki notices marks on Yashiro’s arms that Inami left behind and we all know that Doumeki is jealous of Inami. He is insistent on taking Yashiro away from him and makes little passive aggressive remarks about Yashiro’s relationship with that scumbag. From there he seductively takes off his tie just like he did with his glove in chapter 46 (like seriously Doumeki who taught you how to striptease?) And he attempts to tie Yashiro up with it, thinking that Yashiro still likes it rough but when Yashiro halfheartedly resists thinks…maybe he wants it gentle?
That sparks Yashiro’s memory and he recalls the time he slept in Doumeki’s lap in chapter one, thinking that he did want gentleness at some point. But, of course, Yashiro doesn’t give Doumeki a straight answer because - well - he never does so Doumeki gives him three fingers.
I’d like to point out that Yashiro – who is super impotent – comes like crazy from the fingering alone which is further proof that Doumeki does it for him. Yashiro is 90% undressed by the end but Doumeki only lost the tie and gloves DAMMIT I was hoping for a back reveal I’m still wondering if he has a tattoo.
SIGH I guess we’ll have to wait.
I’m not sure if Nanahara shows up later or the next morning but he knocks on Yashiro’s door. When Doumeki answers it, Nanahara’s face is pure gold and he wants to know what Doumeki is doing there but gets distracted because Yashiro just casually strolls out naked into the living room like he owns the place. Um, well, technically HE DOES OWN THE PLACE but that is exactly why I love My Flawless Son. I can only hope to give exactly zero fucks like that. I especially love how he reads the paper while Nanahara is having a heart attack. Anyway, Nanahara is like WHAT DID YOU TWO DO???? They tell him they didn’t sleep together but Nanahara ain’t really buying it.
They end up talking about yakuza drama for a bit and then Nanahara, Yashiro, and Doumeki take a little drive. Their first stop is the Club Madam’s place where Kamiya is chillin (Nanahara’s face is gold here too, he should never play poker.)
Apparently, money was stolen from her business and she’s pretty sure that it’s because of Okuyama’s group. Doumeki has a suspect in mind but he isn’t letting on yet...and I wonder if it’s the woman who he visited in chapter 47. Club Madam acts very friendly and familiar with Doumeki, calling him Chikara, but as far as I know there isn’t anything between them. Doumeki always turns the women down at bars and soaplands when he’s out with Kamiya, and both Kamiya and Tsunakawa comment on it, so I think they’re friends and they provide each other with information. Now, Yashiro believes that Doumeki does have a woman from their heated interaction back in chapter 46; when asked, Doumeki gave Yashiro a sarcastic answer about it that Yashiro took seriously. So when Nanahara says something about Doumeki and Club Madam to further Yashiro’s suspicions, Yashiro gets JEALOUS.
We haven’t seen a jealous Yashiro since chapter 6, when Doumeki was hanging out with Kuga.
And why is Yashiro jealous? Because he’s in looooove.
But we all know that Yashiro still can’t process his emotions well. Especially emotions that have to do with Doumeki. So after Club Madam’s place, the four of them go out to eat like it’s some kind of double date asjlhalhs and when Doumeki mentions something about treating women gently, Yashiro mind goes back to the beginning of the chapter - where Doumeki offered to be gentle to him - and it scrambles. All confused and upset and not really knowing why or how to deal, Yashiro excuses himself to “go to the restroom” when he actually fucks off and goes to where Kido is hiding. Him and Kido used to have a thing (no surprise there) so Yashiro shows up, asks Kido to assault him in a very desperate way, and starts blowing him. It gets pretty wild but Yashiro cant get it up, which Kido comments on like WHY ARE WE EVEN DOING THIS.
But why Kido? Yashiro could pick up any man he wanted. Most likely it was to piss off Doumeki in some misguided way of making him jealous, so he would feel how Yashiro feels, instead of, you know, TALKING THINGS OUT.
But before Kido can even say another word, a black-gloved hand grabs the back of his shirt and Doumeki tosses him aside. It’s interesting how Doumeki knew exactly what Yashiro was up to; like I’ve been saying, he’s super sharp now. I wonder if he followed him from the restaurant and I also wonder if he heard Kido’s comment about Yashiro’s impotence asdkajdhagsk.
Yashiro looks pretty remorseful and I think he actually feels badly about what he did because Doumeki is ripping pissed. Once again, Doumeki drags Yashiro away (as he has done in several chapters now, back to the possession. And back to jealousy.)
A sexy source on twitter told me that Yashiro’s thinking about Doumeki and his rage as: “a face i've never seen. insane strength. unconcealed anger in his voice.”
And why wouldn’t Doumeki be furious? He’s asked Yashiro not to fuck around and Yashiro is like “nope, I’m still going to try and do it with Inami and also with your group’s prisoner.” Which sooo complicates things on yakuza and emotional levels.
And as Doumeki drags Yashiro away he asks “would you be happy if I assaulted you?” because he knows that Yashiro is just randomly choosing people and he’s so tired of it. Doumeki wants to be the one. The one to possess, the one to control, the one to bring all those hidden emotions out of Yashiro - he always has. The love he felt from the moment he saw Yashiro in that doorway has only grown. It’s been over four years and he won’t leave the yakuza world because Yashiro is still in it. He won’t let Yashiro give himself to anyone anymore. And he’s pushing Yashiro until the walls crack wide open and he breaks so he can be the one to pick up the pieces.
This is the last chapter of volume 8 and Yoneda Kou usually takes a 4 month hiatus in between volumes, which is consistent with the fact that she’s not listed for the next ihrHertz in Jan 2023, so we will be waiting until March for chapter 51.
Until then, here is a song that sums up Yashiro and Doumeki’s feelings during this chapter:  Pet Shop Boys - Jealousy
Special thanks to Lyuba, gays_in_hiace, and the saezuru discord for all their insight, translations, and general awesomeness.

Let’s consider: Doumeki intervening between Yashiro and Kido is good, actually.
Has there ever been a person that’s cared enough about Yashiro to actually physically prevent him from doing something stupid and reckless? Has there ever been someone by his side when things were not looking good for him? Was there ever someone to ask him if he’s alright? Has someone gotten so upset on his behalf that they cried and got angry? What about physically defended Yashiro and restrained/beat up someone else to do so? Or ever intervened in what is obviously a very unhelpful way to deal with trauma? Before I get to the obvious answer, these are all actions that show profound care. Taken together, these gestures aren’t your basic, surface-level courtesies— they require deep compassion and love for someone, because they depend on effort and dedication. The only person in Yashiro’s life that has consistently shown this sort of care has been Doumeki. And it’s for this exact reason that Yashiro came to love him and remember him after 4 years apart.
Before Doumeki came into Yashiro’s life, no one could prove to Yashiro that he is worth the effort and care it takes to protect someone— not his mom, not Kageyama, and not even Misumi could ever fully show Yashiro that his dignity and wellbeing mattered to them. So now, post-timeskip, Yashiro is confused by Doumeki’s gentle, but loveless demeanour in bed. Doumeki seems devoid of the romance and care which initially captured Yashiro’s heart and showed him he’s a worthy person. After coming to a few *important* realizations, it’s obvious that Yashiro is yearning for romantic gestures, soft touches, slow kisses, and genuine compliments/admiration (i.e., “are you really 40” *blush* and “I’m no match for you”). He wants to know that Doumeki cares about him. And if I’m being honest, I think Yashiro will stay emotionally and physically closed off until he is certain that Doumeki really cares about him; otherwise it’s too much heartbreak and abandonment for Yashiro to handle for one lifetime.
All of that being said, when Doumeki showed up out of nowhere and threw Kido across the room, pulled Yashiro off the ground by his arm, and asked him with suppressed anger if he’d be satisfied with this type of violence from him, it was actually a positive development. Again, my thoughts are based on the assumption that Yashiro has changed significantly from his former self, and no longer craves that violent treatment from random men. That means that Yashiro understands why Doumeki is angry… Afterall, he’s harming himself with this impulsive visit to Kido. But Doumeki’s reaction to Yashiro’s impulsiveness was not to turn a blind eye and pretend it didn’t happen, or simply go along with it— no, his reaction is immediate, intense, and in opposition to Yashiro’s reckless behaviour. Doumeki is upset that Yashiro has allowed Kido to treat him with disdain, indignity, and violence. Recall in chapter 46 when Doumeki told Yashiro: “it frustrates me that you haven’t changed,” well, he certainly showed that in chapter 50. Doumeki showed his anger in the face of Yashiro’s self-harm and subsequently revealed that he still cares for him, like he did pre-timeskip.
Yashiro was able to see and experience that old, caring Doumeki again, the same one who smacked up Ryuuzaki’s underlings for disrespecting Y, and terrorized Chestnut until he got his car along with Yashiro’s location. No one would go to such lengths in chapter 50 if they didn’t actually care about someone. Despite Doumeki’s best efforts to hide his romantic feelings for Yashiro in the bedroom- understandably so, coming from his past experience- his emotional reaction/angry outburst in this chapter is what might end up inadvertently drawing Yashiro closer to him, by revealing his true feelings. It’s speculation, but a big win for them if true

Jeez, after reading chapter 50 of Saezuru, I’m really nervous for what’s gonna’ happen in chapter 51.  It’s just something about the way this chapter ends, with the blacked out page, and Doumeki’s words being the only thing on the page, asking Yashiro “If I were the one to violate you, would you be satisfied?”.  It’s got such an ominous sense of dread to it, I feel like.  Enhancing that feeling is Yashiro’s thoughts leading up to that final page, and of course Yashiro’s widening eyes as Doumeki forcibly drags him from the room.  He seems to be remembering something.  He talks about “ an obscured face”, “an almost impossible strength”, “a biting grip” and “a voice with unconsealable anger”.  It could be his dream of Doumeki from before that he’s recalling, since he mentions the obscured face, but it makes me wonder, if it is that, if we remember correctly, Yashiro in his dream ran from Doumeki in a panic.  He seemed truly afraid, and then when he turned around and saw himself alone, there was only a wasteland stretching out before him.
We know Yashiro wants Douneki to be gentle with him, to be kind.  That’s confirmed by Yashiro’s own words in this chapter, when he remembers that first night Doumeki spent with him in his apartment, and how he fell asleep with his head in Doumeki’s lap.  We see it also in the way Yashiro is troubled and internally upset, seeing Doumeki with that woman from the club and how he treats her.  He wants Doumeki’s kindness, but he doesn’t know how to ask for it, or admit it yet.
And so with the final page of this chapter, this feels to me like a truly pivotal moment, one which could make or break things moving forward between Yashiro and Doumeki.  If Doumeki sexually assaults Yashiro, if he hurts him in some sort of rage, at this point, I fear it would be devastating.  It could confirm for Yashiro his own fears, that he’s truly lost Doumeki and his love.  Maybe that’s what the wasteland in his dream symbolizes, that fear of having lost the one and only person to ever, truly love him.
The pages leading up to the end here, and the blacked out final page just leave me super uneasy.  I could be totally wrong.  But I don’t know.  This feels like a turning point, like something dramatic and altering is going to happen.
Yashiro’s obvious depression and desperation when he leaves the restaurant and goes to Kiddo speaks to that too.  Yashiro seems to me like he’s at a breaking point, but which way he breaks depends on what Doumeki does.  I just really worry it could have devastating consequences on Yashiro’s psyche if Doumeki truly violates him.
We’ll see.

It's time for destruction
Tumblr media
The spoilers of chapter 50 bring so many messages. I can't stop comparing this cover with chapter 24 when yashiro tells Doumeki in an almost pleading way: Don't break me.
One of the maxims of the saezuru manga is contradictions and Yashiro even though he doesn't want Doumeki to break it in any way if he needs to in order to move forward. At that time when they had their first close encounter of the third kind, the inexperienced Doumeki breaks it in many ways and Yashiro can never hide behind that mask so easily again.
Now in chapter 50 there is talk of destruction again but things have progressed a lot for both of them. Yashiro has already assumed that he was a victim of abuse and that he is gay, therefore the theme of destruction is key to him and Doumeki is no longer his watchdog. That's why I think the image shows a white background and flying raven feathers with a Yashiro satisfied with the destruction that is coming, being taken by the neck with the hand of the heart still wearing Doumeki gloves. If the change doesn't happen now then when? Doumeki has been preparing these 4 years for this moment --You chose me to do this-- Doumeki knows what Yashiro craves and this time he won't let it get away with ambiguities.
I fervently hope that in this chapter Doumeki will take off the gloves that have protected his feelings for so long and touch Yashiro with his bare hands.
If there are problems in the text, I apologize in advance. Google translator is to blame.

Do you think D knows right now that he is the only one who can turn Y on? I feel like he's going to feel guilty for the things he said to Y back in chapters 50 and 52 about Y having a hopeless body.
I think he must feel really blindsided and confused tbh. Once he does process everything I am pretty sure he would feel guilty for everything. I think many saezuru fans are hopeful this means that Doumeki will recognize that Yashiro only wants him and that this will be the push he needs to open up to Yashiro. None of us really know what will happen next and we have a whole two months to speculate. I think it is important to take note of the things Inami said (from what I got from twitter summaries. Hopefully we can get a translated chapter soon) is that he tells Doumeki it is not up to him to decide if Inami will stop seeing Yashiro or not and that having sex with an impotent man is rape. Honestly it can take him back to the place he was in when he discovered Aoi and his father. I am hopeful he won’t get himself in trouble by beating Inami because I really don’t want Doumeki to fuck himself over for the piece of shit but Idk. And I personally don’t think Doumeki is all of a sudden going to be secure about Yashiro because of his impotency since Yashiro has still chosen other men over Doumeki and all the issues they still have from before the timeskip.

Music – “Lag Jaa Gale” Lata Mangeshkar
Manga - 囀る鳥は羽ばたかない (Saezuru Tori wa Habatakanai) aka Twittering Birds Never Fly) by  ヨネダコウ (Yoneda Kou)
With Yoneda Kuo sensei celebrating the anniversary of her debut and the story moving in a new direction, I wanted to create this to share my love for this series. Saezuru started its serialization in 2011. Now that we are in the year of rabbit again, my hopes for Yashiro-san are soaring.
Lag Jaa Gale (लग जा गले) sung by the melodious Lata-ji is so poignant. Saezuru has progressed a lot since chapter 25. Even after chapter 50 has arrived, a part of me refuses to move ahead. This is to those strums to my heartstrings.

Saezuru Chapter 50 spoilers! So far:
-There is some touching. Doumeki fingers Yashiro on the bed (he gets three in, attaboy) and Yashiro is completely flustered and comes. Doumeki comments on Yashiro bruises from Inami.
-Once they’re done, Doumeki answers Yashiro’s door and Nanahara is there and his face is asklhalshla. He asks what Doumeki is doing in Yashiro’s apartment and YASHIRO JUST STROLLS OUT INTO THE LIVING ROOM COMPLETELY NAKED ajsgakjgsa
-They talk about yakuza drama (Okuyama, what Yashiro and Sakura are after, etc...)
-Then Yashiro, Doumeki, Nanahara, and Kamiya go out to eat? I think? There is some kind of talk about money being stolen but I don’t have all the context.
-The Club Madam runs into Doumeki (above) and is overly familiar and friendly with him WHICH YASHIRO DOES NOT LIKE. Remember, he thinks Doumeki has a woman and Nanahara says something that lightly confirms Yashiro’s wrong suspicions.
-Because Yashiro has the emotional profile of a child, he acts on his jealousy by announcing that he’s going to the restroom but he really doesn’t; instead, he goes to where Kido is being held. He propositions Kido in a really desperate way and blows him but Kido is confused and comments on how Yashiro can’t get it up. It’s like WHY ARE WE DOING THIS???
-Doumeki storms in, hits(?) Kido, and rips Yashiro away, just like he does when Yashiro gets too close to Inami. Then he says something like “will you be satisfied if I do it? Don’t force me to fuck you” although the jury is still out on the direct translation. I have a bunch of people looking into it.

Chapter 49 & 50 - Thoughts and Predictions 💕
Hi!! The title is pretty self-explanatory. I really loved these chapters, especially chapter 50. Lots of ✨realizashuns✨ plus, If you give me fun little locations, unexpected character encounters AND unprompted drama…you’ve sold me. Anyways, my reaction is below and as always, my thoughts are subjective and sometimes speculative, especially on chapter 50.
Starting with chapter 49, I find it quite impressive that Doumeki figured out that Kamiya has been reporting his moves to Tsunakawa. His deductive reasoning skills are very good. Seems like Doumeki really doesn’t believe that Tsunakawa trusts him
My guess: Doumeki feels guilty that his loyalty is split between Yashiro and Sakura Group. This is evident by the fact that Doumeki’s appeasing Y’s wish to guard him, while working to find the Kyouseikai members-- his assigned task right now. Remember, Doumeki volunteered Kamiya to guard Yashiro, while he worked to find the guys that kidnapped Niki, but Yashiro decided he wanted Doumeki instead, which D could have refused according to Muraji (”you let the guest do as he wants”). So, Doumeki is working two jobs right now, but one is definitely more personal
Ngl, I wasn’t sure if I could trust Kamiya for a while, but it seems like he is looking out for Doumeki by reminding him of his duties and by assuring Tsunakawa and Muraji that D is doing both jobs without revealing the true nature of D’s personal involvement with Yashiro
In Yashiro’s apartment, Y tells Doumeki not to expect anything from their partnership, which contradicts his earlier deal with Muraji. Doumeki tries to talk about work, but Yashiro has no interest in sharing his plans with him. Yashiro’s motives are still not clear. He’s acting like he’s after the money that Kido stole and gave to Yamakawa, while Muraji and Kamiya believe he’s working for Doushinkai, and Doumeki also thinks he’s sharing information with Inami. Knowing Yashiro, I wouldn’t be surprised if in actuality, being aware of Tsunakawa’s risky plot to take revenge, Yashiro joined forces to stay close and protect Doumeki. Obviously this isn’t a shocking theory, but if/when the truth comes out, it might be an important revelation to Doumeki (if he doesn’t already suspect it)
Yashiro uses some funny word-play to see how Doumeki will react. As it turns out, expressions are still not Doumeki’s strong suit, which amuses Yashiro. Even though their different ways of communicating creates challenges in their relationship, it’s also a place for humour and lightheartedness. Oh the nostalgia
I notice Y also giving D some sultry, half-lidded looks. He’s being nice and a little seductive. This is a change from his previous snappiness (justified). Yashiro is warming up to Doumeki’s presence, especially since his awareness shift in chapter 47
Doumeki picks up on Yashiro’s change immediately.
Like a good host, Yashiro offers the bed to Doumeki while he rests on the couch, but not before remarking that he’s been “dragged” around all day by a certain someone. Y can’t just be sweet, he’s gotta add some spice
But Yashiro didn’t count on the fact that he’s talking to the same guy that slept criss-cross applesauce on the floor the last time Yashiro used the couch 4 years ago, so he’s certainly not going to use the bed now
So anyway, Doumeki carries him to the bed, they lock eyes, Yashiro is splayed out underneath Doumeki in the sexiest way possible. Doumeki begins to touch him, cause, of course he would
.
Chapter 50
Yashiro tells D to get off of him, but Doumeki refuses, saying Yashiro wanted this because he chose him. Yashiro responds by saying that’s not true, he’s only “fine” with Doumeki over Kamiya, and there is a difference between wanting and settling. Again, their different communication styles are clashing. Yashiro uses his semantic skills in battle, but Doumeki’s ability to read emotions, hidden intentions, deep desires, etc. is a weapon of its own. He often calls Yashiro’s bluff, and it’s an impressive skill that not many can use against Yashiro, because not many have the knowledge and confidence to go against Yashiro like that. That’s probably why Doumeki says to him: “I know you to some extent/I know you in my own way.” I mean, if we’re being honest, Doumeki (and maybe Misumi) is probably the only person that ever truly knew Yashiro, but anyways
Then Doumeki pleasures Yashiro and Yashiro gives him that erotic look, and you know EXACTLY which one I’m talking about.. even Doumeki seems to blush in that moment.. it’s the only instance of D becoming even slightly flustered in this chapter.
Doumeki insinuates that Yashiro has a lustful body, and I can’t really be sure what Yashiro says back to him, but it could be important..we’ll just have to wait until we get some matching translations. Doumeki still has no clue that Yashiro is/was impotent, and Yashiro hasn’t told him yet.. at least not directly. Again, depending on the translation, it’s possible Y may have dropped a hint about his impotence/attraction to D after he came. If that is the case, it seems Doumeki missed the clue because he was distracted by Yashiro’s rope burns. This also wouldn’t be the first time Yashiro became honest in the heat of the moment.. and this little confession would be pretty big. I wonder if Doumeki will recall this interaction later in the story, since I think this matter is important. There’s no way to separate the issue of sex from this story’s resolution. I’ll explain in detail further down.
I think Doumeki ties Yashiro’s hands after Yashiro wasn’t able to respond to Doumeki’s question of whether he wants it rough or gentle
So what do we make of this whole situation? I definitely think it’s complicated and there are multiple things going on with Yashiro and Doumeki. I’ll start with Yashiro:
First, going back to chapter 47, I believe that Yashiro reached a bit of personal enlightenment while having sex with Inami. I already talked about this, so I won’t go into details here, but in short: Y realized that he may actually not be a twisted pervert (recognized he was raped as a child and doesn’t enjoy rough sex with disgusting pigs), thus he also realized that he can’t corrupt Doumeki. In other words, Yashiro no longer feels responsible for Doumeki’s “downfall” into the yakuza. He no longer thinks that he can corrupt Doumeki, because D is “not his guard dog anymore” — he’s his own person that made his own informed decision to join the yakuza and has a life fully separate from Yashiro.
Although Yashiro protested Doumeki’s advances in chapter 50, his overall demeanour seemed a bit more relaxed compared to previous chapters, and I’m just stating facts. I say this because he protested slightly less, there was less verbal sparring and instead more flirting/sensual glances, and most importantly Yashiro MAY have admitted that he only gets aroused by Doumeki (somebody confirm this pls). I believe that Yashiro is more accepting of Doumeki, because he is more accepting of himself. Realizing that his body no longer responds to violence, or craves rough, anonymous sex with men but instead wants only one person— someone that treats him gently— could be doing something positive for Yashiro’s self worth. Remember, Doumeki isn’t being rough with Yashiro, just cold. When he restrains Yashiro, he doesn’t appear to be hurting him. And, Doumeki isn’t using Yashiro to get himself off.. he’s only pleasuring Y. Those differences between Doumeki and Yashiro’s other sex partners are the reason Yashiro’s preferences have changed and the reason he is more open to the idea of having Doumeki around (choosing him to be his guard over Kamiya), so that if something did happen between them, it wouldn’t be the worst thing. This wouldn’t have been conceivable prior to the time skip
Naturally full healing doesn’t happen over night, so Yashiro is still weary about having gentle sex with Doumeki, as he should be. He can’t be sure of how his psyche will react to fully embracing Doumeki, and this sort of healing needs to happen gradually of course, and with full consent. But Doumeki doesn’t know this. So then what is going on with Doumeki:
Firstly, it’s crystal clear now that because of Y and D’s lack of communication, Doumeki is suffering from major misunderstanding. He believes Yashiro can’t live without sex and would do anything to get it. In Tsunawaka’s bathroom, Yashiro told Doumeki point blank that he hasn’t changed. He said it again in chapter 46 and in chapter 49— that he hasn’t changed and he does things for his own convenience. Doumeki even witnesses Yashiro interacting with Inami not once, but twice, and later Y admits to having sex with him. When Kido was caught, Yashiro openly talked about their past sexual encounters, while Doumeki listened.
So when Doumeki asks Yashiro questions like, “do you need a man that badly,” it seems to be a genuine question. Doumeki is essentially asking, “are you pent up right now, do you want sex?” Back in Tsunakawa’s bathroom, Doumeki asked Yashiro if Y can have sex with him. That was also a genuine question. Doumeki wanted to know if Yashiro can see himself having gentle sex. Based off of Yashiro’s response, Doumeki interpreted the answer to be a “no.”
Doumeki’s belief that Yashiro will do it with anyone to relieve his sexual frustration has been proven time and time again. Since Nanahara dropped a bomb on him when he said that Yashiro might not be able to quit sex even if he wanted to, Doumeki seems to have adopted the mentality that Yashiro may never stop seeking out loveless sex. No wonder Doumeki tells Yashiro in chapter 50 that Y has a “lustful body that can’t be helped”
Now Doumeki is stuck between not wanting Yashiro to harm himself by having rough sex with people like Inami and Kido, and also not wanting to overwhelm and harm Yashiro by being too lovey-dovey. Again, during Y and D’s sexual encounters, Doumeki isn’t being physically rough and violent toward Yashiro..he’s “just” being emotionally distant. Loveless, you could say
Personally, I don’t believe that Doumeki planned for any of this to happen. I think he’s taking things as they come and responding in the moment. I think his goal or motive since the time skip is to ensure that Yashiro experiences the least amount of harm possible. It’s in his protective nature to shield the one’s he loves, no matter what. Naturally, Doumeki taking things into his own hands and intervening in Yashiro’s life makes us, the readers, debate the morality of his choices. And I’m glad to see people thinking critically and engaging deeply with the themes of this story.
Ok so if Yashiro is starting to accept Doumeki into his life, then why did he go to Kido at the end of chapter 50? The short answer is: Yashiro acts up when he feels like he’s being left behind. Not to sound repetitive, but setbacks in healing do happen, and Doumeki’s relationship with his supposed girlfriend is a major trigger for Yashiro. It’s not so much that Yashiro is envious of other peoples’ happiness, but rather, he’s fearful of losing something. He’s afraid to lose Doumeki to someone else.
With every new chapter release I like to reread older chapters and to see if I notice new details. With chapter 50 out, it confirms my belief that Yashiro wants Doumeki to admit his feelings, because Yashiro is afraid that the feelings he has for Doumeki are unrequited.
Ever since Yashiro realized his body responds to Doumeki after the incident in Tsunakawa’s bathroom, he’s wanted Doumeki to admit that he also wants Y. Remember chapter 45? Yashiro got so upset that Doumeki wouldn’t admit that he wants to drive Yashiro home for more than work-related reasons that he literally hopped out of the car? Then Yashiro got so worked up when Doumeki insinuated that Y was the only one that “wanted something.” Yashiro was like “you think I want YOU? Watch this” and walked straight up to Inami in front of Doumeki. The fear of being caught in a one-sided love has stayed with Yashiro ever since Kageyama, so it’s no wonder Yashiro doesn’t want to be the first one to admit he is in love— he simply doesn’t want to be abandoned and let down again, like he has been so many times before. Unfortunately for Yashiro, his almost desperate attempt to make Doumeki jealous didn’t go the way he subconsciously may have hoped, because Doumeki thinks Yashrio still craves loveless sex just to satisfy his body. Although Doumeki realized that Yashiro likes tenderness in bed, Y will not be the first one to admit it; thus Doumeki continues to be emotionally distant from Yashiro, in and outside of the bedroom. And round and round we go. Doumeki thinks Yashiro needs to satisfy his sexual urges, yet wants to protect him from violent men, therefore finds a shaky middle-ground by maintaining emotional distance from Yashiro while also taking care of Yashiro’s sexual appetite. On the other end, Yashiro knows his body only wants Doumeki; he doesn’t realize consciously that it’s more than just his body, since he’s also afraid of being abandoned by Doumeki or losing him to someone else, therefore he shields himself by keeping his feelings hidden, which in turn keeps Doumeki in the dark about Yashiro’s changes and real desires.
If I had to take a guess, I think the solution to this problem lies in Doumeki finding out about Yashiro’s impotence with other sexual partners. This solution would clear Doumeki’s misunderstanding that Yashiro craves loveless sex with strangers and yakuza, and would give him the confidence to try being loving again without fearing that it would drive Yashiro into a corner again. If Doumeki switched his cold personality to a warm, loving, and committed one, Yashiro would realize he doesn’t have to fear loving Doumeki one-sidedly and/or losing Doumeki to someone else. Whether and how Doumeki finds out about Yashiro’s impotence remains to be seen, but I think it’s definitely coming… it’s been teased too much to be left unaddressed. Not to mention that piece of dialogue in chapter 50 where Yashiro may already have admitted it in the heat of the moment. Perhaps Doumeki just needs decipher its meaning.
Nevertheless, I think progress has been made, because in the very least it seems like Yashiro doesn’t fear corrupting Doumeki anymore. The only hurdle left really, although it’s a significant one, is the issue of sex (to be loving or distant/cold) and abandonment (to be honest or closed off).
And lastly, Yashiro experiences a mental setback when he meets Doumeki’s supposed girlfriend, and tries to have rough sex with Kido to cope with never again being the person Doumeki treats gently. This is the exact reason Yashiro never wanted to meet Doumeki again— to prevent this sort of heartbreak, which I think Yashiro always thought was inevitable.. that Doumeki would eventually leave him.
But, interestingly, Yashiro didn’t go to Inami. He followed Doumeki’s rule that as long as he’s is working with D, he needs to stop seeing Inami and stop exchanging info with him. So, as far as Yashiro knows, Doumeki shouldn’t have any issues if Y slept with Kido, right? Yet, Doumeki showed up out of nowhere, completely unexpected, with a vein popping out of his neck in anger. Yashiro is stunned.
In that moment, I can only assume a million thoughts are racing through Yashiro’s head. Doumeki followed him all the way from the restaurant to stop him from regressing back into his old coping pattern and seems more upset than ever. Remember when Yashiro asked in chapter 45, “what’s it to you?” I’m sure he’s trying to find the answer to that question now. If Doumeki has a girlfriend, why does he care if Yashiro is sleeping with Kido? Is Doumeki upset on Yashiro’s behalf, after Kido just insulted him and pressed his head roughly down his dick? A lot going on here, can’t wait to see what happens next

Op is a promising, thus far excellent manga. What's happening to it? is the serialization extremely slow or something only 3 chapters since 2016...
Yes, Op has been a side project from the beginning, because Sensei is mainly focussing on Saezuru tori wa habatakanai, and probably will continue to do so until the end of the series. When she got approached by the editorial department of Evening magazine with the request to draw a seinen manga for them, she was already publishing Rainy Days, Yesterday in Be Boy Gold too, so she could only agree under the condition that they would allow her to provide chapters on an irregular basis due to her workload. Seems Evening was fine with that and now she works on Op whenever it fits into her schedule.
But even though the official chapter count is 2 at the moment, both of them were published in several parts (5 in total) with 20 - 50 pages each, so if we go by page count that makes 5 chapters since June 2016 which definitely isn’t fast, but still okay I think, given the fact that she’s working on three series at the same time. She also drew extra pages for the Op tankoubon release next week, and not just a few as she mentioned on Twitter.
Well, so far each chapter is a unit, and the cliffhangers aren’t too bad which makes the wait more bearable I think.
