MY THOUGHTS ON NEON GENESIS EVANGELION MANGA
Finally finished reading the evangelion manga!!!
3rd manga I read and finish
Here's a post about my thoughts in it
Considering I didn't watch none of the anime adaptations
Tumblr media
⚠️⚠️HEAVY SPOILER ALERT⚠️⚠️
Ngl
The manga starts a bit meh.
While it does really well at introducing Shinji, comparing it to the other 2 mangas I read(70s Devilman and Berserk), it's the worst one in keeping you interested in the plot
Tumblr media
At the end of Volume 1 of devilman you really want to know about what will be for Akira
And you see literally the first panel of Berserk and you know shit will go hard
Evangelion on the other hand, while the plot itself is good enough not making you bored and making you keep reading,
It doesn't get good until volume 6, almost halfway through the story, with Toji's death (saddest part imo)
Tumblr media
From there the story goes from barely decent to great
The last 3 volumes are easily the best ones, with Rei being that giant ... (whatever it is) the peak
The scenes are pretty damn sublime and it's an overall really good part of the plot
Tumblr media
As for the characters
My favorite character is Kaji
Pretty much because his self-conflict with the death of his brother and other kids he was with when young.
In order not to be killed, he told where were the other kids, which led to be him the only one that wasn't killed, which made him question if he deserves to live happily
Also, he's just overall cool
Tumblr media
Honorable mentions are Toji and Shinji
Shinji because of the character development at the end
Toji because being because of everything that happened since he was chosen for the eva. Being harsh with Shinji for what he did after piloting the eva, but when he was chosen, he felt nothing but fear, making he realize what was Shinji going through. And in the end, he died.
Tumblr media
The worst one is easily Kaworu, by far the most disappointing one.
I heard a lot from Internet about how he makes Shinji feel comfortable by saying stuff like his heart is fragile and that it deserves to be loved and what not...
I suppose that's what happens in the anime, but in the manga he's a total freak who tries too hard in making Shinji his boyfriend but he just makes Shinji feel uncomfortable
Then the story tries to make you feel bad because he turns out to be a traitor but then he asks Shiji to kill him
Tbh I would at least feel something if he was what internet said about him
I REALLY REALLY wanted to like him and I hope all the love he gets from the internet is because of the anime
Tumblr media
So since I don't want to write much anymore,
while I didn't like it as much as Berserk or Devilman, it was more than worth reading it.
I'll watch the ova in some near future
Great manga overall
Alright back to Soul hackers 1, let's see if I can finish it before year ends

NEON GENESIS EVANGELION
Favorite Male Character:
Ryoji Kaji. Thank you king for being complex and trying to be a decent father figure to Asuka. Thank uuu king. U deserved a bf but served ur story role well. Watermelon man take me by the hand
Favorite Female Character
Tie between Asuka and Rei. Extremely complex traumatized girls trying to cope in their own ways, reaching out, Parallels, Deserved The World, The Real Protagonists in the teen group atleast. Loaf them. These kids deserved so much better.
Least Favorite Character
Keel Lorenz. Antisemitic stereotype, full stop, inexcusable. A rewrite is inherently immoral if they don’t cut out the entire fuckery with him.
...if we’re talking a purely character standpoint though, without going into the metatext at all, Gendo Ikari is a disgusting human being in an immense amount of ways too numerous to mention here and my hatred for him burns brighter than a thousand dying suns
Favorite Ship
ASUREI WILL ASURISE! If you wanna know why i will rant to you.
Favorite Friendship
Either Toji and Kensuke’s or Hikari and Asuka’s. Though Kaji and Ritsuko’s is pretty tragic and kinda hilarious.
Favorite Quote
“What are you alive for?” “Maybe I’m living because I want to figure that out.”
Worst Character Death (if any)
Asuka’s. Which? So many of them.
This made me so happy you have no idea Moment
Let’s Be Good Friends. The potential of that scene…….AAAAAAAAA
Saddest Moment
CANNOT CHOOSE. Hell kitchen. Elevator scene. Look at me! Mass Produced Evas. Disgusting. But most of all I hate myself.
Favorite Location
Kaji’s watermelon farm.

30 Day Anime Challenge: Day 25
Saddest Anime Death.
WARNING! Today’s entry will contain major spoilers for Neon Genesis Evangelion. You have been warned.
Tumblr media
Remember how I mentioned on Day 11 I mentioned that I found all of Neon Genesis Evangelion on VHS at a thrift store back when I was 12? Well, that particular thrift store was only missing Volume 12 of the series (which contained episodes 23 & 24) which I ended up finding at a different thrift store a few weeks later. I had already seen the last two episodes, so I knew Rei (who was my favorite at the time) would be fine, right? RIGHT?
The fact that it was raining the day I first watched this episode was so fitting. I remember sobbing uncontrollably while holding a box of tissues as Rei sacrificed herself, going “Why!? What about Rei’s happiness!?” Then there was hope! Rei was sitting outside the Nerv hospital room or whatever it was called and all was well! Except...this Rei seemed somehow different?
Finally, one of the biggest plot twists in the entire series is revealed: there are many Rei’s kept at the core of the dummy system, hidden at Nerv headquarters. To this very day whenever I go back and re-watch the series, this is always the hardest episode to get through.
I should also mention that I almost considered making this my response to Day 24, but the fact that Rei’s death had a bigger emotional impact on me than the big plot twist is what ultimately decided today’s answer.

Gintama and Japanese Tragedy
I’ve been watching Gintama again (I say again, but I’ve never finished the series, I mean again in that I take long breaks from watching the show), and I just came to a realization after finishing the Guardian Dog Arc - Tragedies are beautiful, but they kind of suck.
The first anime that really got stuck in my bones was Neon Genesis Evangelion (the first show I ever binge watched, I was 15, I was confused out of my mind, I hated the experience).  I think Evangelion taught me that some stories are just unfair, that the main characters don’t learn a lesson, and that protagonists can be lost in their own story.  It’s frustrating, because everything Shinji deals with is outside of his understanding or power to solve, that the end of the world happens and all he could do is watch people around him die and ride the wave.
Cowboy Bebop was the next milestone for me.  Spike and his crew went on one adventure after the other, and lots of people died.  And sometimes it was all they could do but “carry that weight”.  They tried to forget their own pasts, but it all caught up with them in the end (now I’m reminded of that Cowboy Bebop AMV set to Linkin Park’s “In the end”).  Anyways, around this point I started forming my reasoning for being troubled by the tragic story structure.  We go along with characters on their story arcs, but the lessons they learn, the things they experience, and the wisdom they attain usually ends with them.  There is no personal gain, and very rarely is there societal gain.
It’s the same with the classic tragic plays, operas, and stories of the west.  While some of them follow the mythological model - where the tragedy leads to personal enlightenment or helps correct a flaw in society or saves someone else from their fate, the majority of them don’t have a “purpose” outside of their own self-contained stories.
I think a lot about Mushishi.  A beautiful anime, but it is one of the saddest experiences of my life.  People get hurt, the world around them cries, or rather than face the suffering of the world they give into it.  There’s a lot of depth to it though, but my problem is that something has to come from all that suffering, otherwise it’s ultimately a dead end.
Which brings me back to Gintama.  I love the show’s sense of humor.  But the tragic formula, which is so often repeated, is that a person’s deep seated regret (or tragic flaw) ultimately leads to conflict and puts them on the path to their own death.  The only thing they wind up gaining is a “beautiful death”, but it’s the lack of impact which bothers me.  Which is why I rather liked the Shinsengumi Crisis Arc, as at least the death there showed the impact it had on the other members of the Shinsengumi.
As a member of the audience, tragedies work beautifully to tell us “don’t let your life go to waste”, “correct your own flaws”, “be a force for good in the world and the lives of others”.  If you leave Hamlet a little sad, but a little more determined, then the play has done its job.  The problem is these long-form stories and how tragedy is detrimental to world-building and character development.  Especially with Gintama (and I’m totally reminded of Hokuto No Ken as well) where a villain character gets a sob story right before their death.  It feels cheap, because that’s the note we leave off on?  Like that’s the one puzzle piece to help us understand the motivations of characters who are often (but not always) killers?
Things to think about as I write my own stories.

As part of the Japan Animator Expo, a collaboration between Hidekai Anno’s Studio Khara and animators/directors from across Japan, three videos were made featuring Evangelion: Another Impact (the third video and arguably the most popular), Until You Come to Me (the second video and arguably the saddest), and Neon Genesis Impacts (the first video, and the least popular).
Each of these videos builds upon the established lore of the series, canon or not, and my personal favorites, Until You Come to Me and Neon Genesis Impacts, are cute, heartwarming-if-not-sad gems that deserve more attention from the fandom. Kaworu’s death breaks my heart (especially in the rebuilds, where I literally bawl every time), and Until You Come to Me (set to the very well-fitting English folk song “Danny Boy/Londonderry”) is such a beautiful way to interpret and frame Shinji’s thoughts and feelings over the course of these series when it comes to the people he’s lost and fought with all of this time.
Neon Genesis Impacts is a little fluffy, but I am a sentimental mess and immediately fell in love with the characters of Impacts and their story of trying to make the most of every day while living in a city where death is a constant concern. Rarely do you ever get to see Evangelion from the perspective of the people on the ground, and their dedication to their love and friendship through to the very end even as cherished memories literally faded away REALLY struck a chord with me. And there’s Yuri!
All three videos are amazing, but there is a particularly special place in my heart for Until You Come to Me and Neon Genesis Impacts, and if you are a fan of Evangelion, please watch the videos and encourage others to do so too! They’re all really good.
