I can not stress enough that in Star Trek, Amanda Grayson being an incredibly loving wife AND shitty parent is a feature, not a bug. She loves Sarek with her whole heart. And as much as she loves Spock, every single time she has to choose between them, she'll back Sarek. Spock grew up knowing his mom loved him, but that she also did not understand him and would never have his back.
Before people in the mainstream even had the vocabulary to describe what they were seeing, they understood on a gut level that Spock was a neurodivergent, mixed race adult son of two incredibly charismatic and successful parents.
There are so many layers of relatability here.
A surprising lot of people in very loving and devoted marriages aren't great parents. An unsurprising lot of powerful people with prestigious careers also aren't great parents.
Folks who grew up with parents who were great at their jobs and devoted to one another but who just couldn't relate to or understand their kids could see themselves in Spock. Moreover, he demonstrated that if they took a path radically different from what their parents wanted, they could become incredibly successful and even well liked in a whole different sphere.
Most of all, for folks who could see how much their parents adored one another but never felt like that love extended to them, there is something profound in the way Kirk looks at Spock like he hangs the stars in the sky. He's a source of hope that even if you grew up as your family's ugly duckling, if you get out from under their influence you can find someone who will perceive you as a swan.

imagine being average federation citizen doing a wikipedia dive on Amanda Grayson for like a book report or whatever and you click on “spouse” and it links you to a guy who was thee vulcan ambassador to earth for like 200 years and publicly called the klingon ambassador a murderer once and you think huh neat and click on “children” and the first person listed is described as “career criminal, activist and religious evangelist” with a rap sheet as long as your arm ending with him taking the entire government hostage in nimbus iii and then no death date he's just listed as “missing” and the second kid is a starfleet science hero you've seen on the poster of like 7 different documentaries on space netflix and you notice his year of death is listed as 2285 but “years active” goes on like 100 years past that and also he's apparently the reason earth isn't completely underwater right now? then you read his sister's article and it's all “starfleet's first mutineer” “blamed for starting the first federation-klingon war” “lauded for ending the first federation-klingon war” but is weirdly vague on what happened to her after that and the article is edit locked and her year of death has like 6 annotations attached to it

"At the time it seemed the logical thing to do."
A scruffy little sketch of young Amanda and Sarek on the sands of Vulcan, because I adore their little love story.

I don't want your traditional drama that you get from cheating with Spock and T'Pring. I want this.
T'Pring finds out and she just stands there for a couple of minutes then:
T'Pring: I had sexual intercourse with Michael Burnham.
Chapel: *confused*
Laan: *confused because she distantly remembers that being the name of a Mutineer*
Spock: WHAT!!!?!!!!!
Pike: *panicking, desperately trying to find an exit, falls on floor, has heart attack*

Day two of Spocktober 🗣️🗣️
Pov: you are amanda and there is an actual gremlin in your kitchen who hasn't eaten in twenty entire minutes (you will allow him a SMALL snack and regret it quickly) (he will not finish his plomeek soup) (he will request something sweet afterwards anyways) (his older brother will give it to him once you go to bed even though you said no)

everybody shits on sarek for his mistakes but consider: there's just as much evidence for amanda messing up parenting-wise and yet she doesn't get bashed 9 out of every 10 posts. in disco michael canonically broke baby spock's heart and crushed his humanity but everybody forgives her because we understand she really did want to protect him and she loved him. in TOS Bones said the most racist shit to spock repeatedly and on purpose and people forgive him for the emotional hurt he regularly inflicts on spock because we know that he actually cares + he grows as a person. Jim calls Spock a "half-breed" TWICE to get out of a jam and is regularly pretty hurtful as well but we know how much they love each other so it's all forgotten. Sybok tries to brainwash Spock and shows him angsty visions of his deepest pain but people still headcanon him as a caring big bro despite Spock specifically stating he felt Sybok had abandoned him as a child (and I mean. Sybock was banished from Vulcan, not the Federation. he could have kept in touch).
methinks that of all the people who badly hurt spock over his lifetime, there's only one who gets systematically shat on while the others are always let off the hook - even though we have proof sarek loves spock just as deeply as the rest of them do.
so I'm going with the assumption that y'all are still working through your childhood trauma and haven't forgiven your fathers. and like, I'm genuinely sorry, but I have personally been lucky enough to have worked through the enormous baggage and rebuilt a relationship with mine, so I still think Sarek was doing his best and he fcked up but he wasn't a "bad guy" anymore than the others were 🖖

STAR TREK: DISCOVERY ↳ Your behavior was impulsive and shortsighted. How dare you. I accepted this life because I love you. And now Spock pays the price... ...like he always has. BONUS:

the Sarek family is hilarious to me because you have so much drama in one place. there have got to be at least 3 like, holo-documentaries or whatever about them. how could you not?
you have Sarek, the patriarch: one of the UFP's top diplomats, who knocks up a Vulcan princess then goes “hrm I am ambassador to Earth therefore I should marry a human” and he does, upsetting all sorts of the worst kinds of people on his home planet and causing racist hate groups to try to blow him and his family up multiple times, and seems honestly more put out by his son joining Starfleet than his other son becoming Vulcan Moriarty
Amanda, the matriarch: an accomplished educator and quite possibly the only well-adjusted member of the family, but when her son Spock shows up on her doorstep after growing a beard, having a mental breakdown and apparently murdering several medical staff she still shrugs and hides him in the family mausoleum
Sybok: Amanda's stepson from the aforementioned princess fling, who becomes an antiestablishment criminal mastermind with an edgelord fake name, hooks up with a hot space pirate, finds religion, starts a cult, takes an entire colonial government hostage sparking a diplomatic incident involving three galactic superpowers, and hijacks a Starfleet ship to the galactic core to find the Vulcan Garden of Eden, where he dies fighting god in hand-to-hand combat
Michael, a traumatized human girl Sarek brings home from a work trip, who joins Starfleet, becomes their first-ever mutineer, goes to prison, saves the Federation from a war most people think is her fault and gets “killed” in a highly classified, very suspicious incident involving an experimental starship and a series of red lights that appeared across the galaxy like a divine omen (oh, and returns 900 years later to solve the dilithium crisis, kill the head of the Emerald Chain and save two entire star systems including her siblings' homeworld)
and last but not least Sarek & Amanda's one-of-a-kind hybrid baby. Spock, who gets accepted into the Vulcan Science Academy, tells them to go fuck themselves when they're racist about it, runs off to Starfleet instead, gets so famous his arranged marriage falls apart resulting in him publicly strangling his own captain to death except not really, steals the Federation flagship twice, invents time travel, saves the entire planet Earth, dies and comes back to life, goes into his dad's line of work and achieves peace with the freaking Klingons as his opening act, then after a long successful career suddenly dips to go do extremely dangerous underground activism on one of the most paranoid authoritarian worlds in the galaxy to unify the Romulans & Vulcans who've hated each other for over a thousand years — and he isn't around to see it but it eventually works. then he fucks off with the VSA's high-speed prototype ship full of the most dangerous substance known to science and gets sucked into a black hole of his own creation, never to be seen again. and this is just the stuff that's public knowledge!
then you dig into the novels where Sarek's ancestor basically makes out with Zefram Cochrane 5 seconds after meeting him and Amanda tells the press her husband has a huge cock
I love them

i hate MANY things about how angsty the s'chn t'gai family's canon is but i think my main issue with it is that it really makes a "jim meets spock's siblings" scenario impossible because of the timelines
(p.s. if you know any fics of jim meeting spock's siblings, send them my way pls)

Integral House - Aka the S'Chn T'Gai Home from Disco
If I haven't absolutely gushed about this before, here we go.
So they picked a house in Canada (no surprise) to be the home of Sarek and Amanda. Right?
Okay, but this fucking place is called the Integral House. As in Derivatives and Integrals. An integral is the area under a curve.

Also, the dude who built the house got rich off of Calculus textbooks (which we hate him for because my calc, etc books in college were way too fucking expensive.)
But the Vulcans are in a math house. That is all.

What I am absolutely loving about strange new worlds is that they are fulfilling my own personal headcanon that I've had since the very first time that I saw Amanda Grayson in Discovery. That headcanon being that Amanda has a weird secret past involving odd alien species and probably saving the entire universe at some Point. Just like her two children.
Like 18 year old Amanda Grayson was going about becoming friends with neer immortal aliens and wooing random stoic Vulcans, all the while doing something that made it so that said neer immortal alien didn't bat an eyelid at the idea that her son had good reason to steal Starfleet's flagship.
Chaotic Good Amanda Grayson
