I don’t think I’ve posted this beauty since it healed. It’s my pride and joy! I just wish I could get a photo without the crossbow looking crooked! That’s what I get for getting it on my arm.
Tumblr media
There we go! I was overextending my elbow and making it crooked. Oops!

I don’t know how to explain this but every female identifying musician I love is queer even if she is cis and sings about men

Chapter 3: Punch.
.
🛡🛡
"Russell, do you know what you're asking me?" He hears on the other end of the phone.
"I know perfectly well, Monica, that's why..."
"That's why nothing, I can't give you the code to a camera just so you can spy on your pretty girl friend."
"It's not..." he takes a deep breath, biting the inside of his cheek. "It's not for me... I just want to make sure..."
"That she's fine, yes, you've already told me, but I remind you that she's married."
"And her husband treats her like shit!"
"And that's not your problem! She hasn't asked for your help, Russell, you can't just barge into their lives like that, what if it's all a misunderstanding?"
"The bruises on her body aren't a..."
"Why not? There are many kinds of love, it doesn't mean it's mistreatment..."
"For God's sake, that's not what it's about, it's not just her physique, okay? You have... she's not happy..."
"Has she told you? Like that, in those words?"
No, you haven't told him anything, in fact you haven't spoken to each other properly for a while now, Russell knows that wall can get pretty thick if he doesn't do anything to avoid it, but you're always dodging him and he doesn't know what to do anymore.
"Russell, listen to me." He hears Monica say. "I can't help you with that, if you really want to help her, talk to her, you're a former cop, I'm sure you know how to ask the questions." She advises him and without further ado hangs up on him.
Russell tenses his jaw until he feels his teeth chatter loudly. Sure he knows how to ask the questions, but what good is it if you don't want to talk to him.
He wants to scream in frustration, why does he want to get involved in this? He doesn't know you at all, you're just his neighbors, what does he care? His cop side won't let him let it go, he's known other domestic violence cases and knows that in many, if not all, things don't end well if no one remedies them. They've been late so many times that Russell feels his throat shrink. He doesn't dream about his victims constantly, nor does he suffer PTS, but lately he remembers some cases that he and his unit couldn't get to in time and he wakes up drenched in cold sweat almost every night. He doesn't want the same thing to happen to you, he would hate to see you walk out of that house stuffed in a black bag.
He needs to relax, he goes out to the backyard as he lights up a cigarette, catches it between his lips and gathers the strands of his hair into a little bun, he should go get it cut soon, it's starting to be uncomfortable to look at and it bothers him to work. The day has gone calm and sunny, like many other times, he sits on the porch with the cigarette between his fingers, his eyes are squinting because of the sun, his heart is still pounding, but he feels calmer every time the nicotine runs through his lungs.
"Hello..." He hears next to him and jumps in his chair.
The last thing he expected was for someone to speak to him, so immersed in his thoughts that he hadn't noticed anyone's presence. Of your presence. He gets up from his chair and throws his cigarette on the floor as if he is embarrassed to be seen smoking. He waves his hands nervously and takes a few steps toward the fence.
"Hey, hi..." He waves back, and suddenly feels like a kid.
You couldn't help yourself, you were in the kitchen when you saw him come out into the garden talking on the phone, hair messy, baggy sweatpants, tank top revealing all the tattoos that were imprinted on his skin, many of a military nature, making you wonder what he does or did for a living. He seemed frustrated and you wanted to ask him if he was okay, but at the same time you felt you had no right, you had set limits for him yourself, he had overstepped in confidence wanting to talk about Matt and things he didn't know, but you still didn't like to see him so discouraged, upset about something. You smiled as you watched him put his hair up and light a cigarette. Biting your lip you decided to leave and walk over to the fence to ask him if he was okay, you didn't think he would freak out and now that he's in front of you, you don't know what to say.
"Are you okay?" That's all you can think to say. "Y-you seemed upset about something..."
"It was Monica, I was trying to talk to her about something important..."
"Oh... Monica is your girlfriend?" you feel a strange taste in your mouth as you say the word 'girlfriend'.
"What? No, no, she's just my co-worker." He laughs downplaying it, but you see he blushed a little, maybe he likes her and doesn't know how to talk to her.
"Well, insist, if you really think it's important, don't give up, maybe she'll surprise you." You try to encourage him and smile weakly.
"Okay..." He smiles too and leans his arms on the fence, staring at you. "Are you okay?"
"Y-yeah..." You try to sound convincing. "Just... Russell, I'm sorry if these days I..."
"Hey, stop, you don't have to apologize, I stepped in where I wasn't called." He stops you but you shake your head again. "Besides I've been busy too, I haven't had much free time."
You smile thankfully he downplays the matter, you nod and bite your lip, fidgeting nervously, not quite sure what else to say, he's still leaning on fence, waiting, his long, strong, toned arms droop lax, you can see some veins marking on his skin, the tension in his neck, his shoulders slumped, but square in the position. Your fingers itch suddenly wanting to touch the tattoo on his shoulder and chest, you want to ask and at the same time you are embarrassed, however, you have been staring at him for quite a while. You feel your cheeks redden again.
"C-can I ask you a favor?" You say at last and watch as his body is positioned nicely again, his athletic chest marked in the tank top.
"Sure, what's up?"
"I-I want to get some stuff down from the loft, but I can't by myself... it's not very heavy, but my arms..." You don't have an explanation for him as to why your arms hurt, you can't tell him that you can't stretch too far without your stomach bothering you or your knees shaking.
"Okay..." He agrees and his tone is low, almost like a whisper, he knows that if he speaks louder you will notice his anger and he doesn't want you to get defensive again.
💔🛡💔
You open the front door for him when you hear him coming up the steps, you greet him again with a contained chuckle, he enters and looks around, the house is a little dirty, you are embarrassed, but today you can't move too much and some tasks get you completely tired. You slyly walk as straight as you can, despite the limp in your right leg and the pain in your stomach. Russell is no idiot, he's been a cop, he sees what you're trying to hide, but he doesn't say anything.
Matt has never been as violent with you as he's been lately. Fed up that you can't give him the news he wants to hear, he's taking all his anger out on you, but you still can't give him a son.
You can't.
Russell follows you silently, but closely, for a moment fearing you might fall at any moment. You climb up to the second floor and carefully up the loft stairs, Russell has to crouch a bit as the space isn't very big, he's not the tallest man in the world either, but those wooden beams don't look friendly.
"It's these boxes here and these suitcases..." You say looking at him out of the corner of your eye.
Suitcases. Russell's heart races as he hears you, the question burns in his throat, he really wants to ask you why you want him to get some suitcases down from the loft, he'd love to hear the answer, but he bites his tongue in time, just nods and carefully picks up one of the suitcases. They are heavy, they may have old clothes inside or items you no longer use and want to donate them somehow. His excitement deflates a bit, but he still doesn't say anything.
"I'm going to take these down first, okay? Wait for me here." He asks you, lowering the huge suitcase.
You remain sitting on the dusty wooden slats as you watch Russell walk up and down the stairs taking the things you've asked him for. You are not embarrassed, because yes, you needed his help, but the spectacle he is putting on for you is bigger than you thought. He is doing nothing but shuffling his body from side to side, holding on to the stairs, his shoulders tense, his arms contracted, the veins and tendons marked against his skin, the little bun dances back and forth and there is a small, fugitive bead of sweat rolling down his temple. But that's not all, the last time he's climbed the stairs, your eyes have dropped sharply to his crotch, seeing the bulge that forms in his sweatpants every time he lifts a leg to climb a new step.
"Okay, I think that's it." His raspy voice makes you look at him again. "Do you need anything else?"
You shake your head as you swallow and crawl down the stairs, Russell comes down just before you and stands on the bottom stairs, covering your descent with his body in case you trip. Russell picks up the stairs and closes the trap door.
"Thank you very much, Russell." You say dragging the large suitcase towards your room, Russell picks up a couple of boxes, following you.
"Do you guys have any trips planned?" he tries to figure out what it's all for.
"No, not at the moment, Matt travels a lot for work and I have a few things he could take with him to be more comfortable." You answer him quickly, he nods, setting the boxes down on the bed.
"That's nice... Do you spend a lot of time alone?" he gives you a sidelong glance, leaving yet another box in your room.
"Is this an interrogation?" you joke and he smiles half-sideways.
"Not at all, but you don't need to answer if you don't want to."
"Not for long." You reply with a low chuckle. "Matt's usually gone two or three days, but never too long, he never leaves me alone..."
"He worries about you." He feels acid run down his throat when he says that.
"Yeah, right..." You laugh rubbing your arms, even though you haven't exerted yourself much, they ache, your skin feels like it's burning.
"I don't want you to think I'm forcing you or anything, but if you need anything... talk... go out shopping... walk, I don't know, a-anything..." He shrugs and chews his lip several times.
"Thanks, Russell, maybe I do, I need to... I need to get out and breathe a little."
"That's great, I'm going to...woh, woh!" he startles when suddenly your feet stumble and your knees waver. He pins you down, grabs you tightly and leans you against his chest. "Hey are you alright!" he startles holding you by the chin.
"Yeah, yeah, sorry, I just got dizzy." You try to pull away, but Russell holds you back.
His hands don't force you, they just hold you, you feel his fingers brush your cheek as he forces you to look at him and his other hand rests on your lower back, you feel it warm and big against your body, just like everything he is, you had never realized his size and yet he is so careful as if he is touching something so fragile that it could break. Maybe he wasn't so wrong.
You can't stifle a gasp as he bends your body and lifts you off the floor, scooping you up in his arms he carries you back into your room and gently lays you down on your bed.
"Russell?"
"How long has it been since you've eaten? Or hydrate, how long have you been occupying your head with other things?"
"I-I don't know, I had coffee when I woke up this morning, but..."
"Okay, I'm going to fix you something to eat and I'm going to get you a bottle of water."
"Russell" You insist but he seems to ignore you.
"You need to rest and eat something, you can't go all day without a bite to eat, it's not good."
"Russell!" you shout as he is about to leave your room, he looks at you doubtfully, but you are confused. "What are you doing?"
"Taking care of you." He shrugs and walks out of the room leaving you alone.
💔🛡💔
You're hiding under the covers of your bed, you feel your heart beating very fast and your cheeks burning, you can't stop shivering, but it's not from fear or cold. Spasms and a warmth you haven't felt for a long time, something you've been missing with all your might, but you're getting it from the one you would have least expected.
Or at least the first day you met.
Russell has been hanging around your house all morning, ever since you had the little stumble, he's insisted on making you something to eat and tucking you into a cocoon, you almost feel like a caterpillar, a little smothered too, but you like it.
"Are you feeling better?" You hear your neighbor's voice and you stick your head out from between the sheets, just your eyes and nose, nodding your head. "What are you doing?" he laughs low coming up to you.
"It's just that you've covered me up so tight I can't move..."
"Shit, sorry." You laugh and he uncovers you a little, you stick your head out completely and smile.
"You don't have to go to all that trouble."
"I don't mind, you almost passed out in front of me, if it would have happened to you being alone..."
"I'm fine, it's just... I'm a little clumsy..." You avert your gaze when you say that and Russell sighs.
"And that's why I'm here."
There's a small silence, Russell sits on the edge of the bed and leans over to put a hand on your forehead. He's relieved to know that you don't have a fever, that at no point has your temperature risen, so it's nothing serious, it's just tiredness, he hasn't been able to see your body, but he knows there are new marks on your skin. If only you would listen to him, if only you would let him save you.
He sighs licking his lips, he's no one to save you, just a retired cop, demoted to customer service guy for a security company, he's just a neighbor meddling in lives that have never asked for his help. Now he wants to play hero, but you haven't even thrown out a distress signal.
"Are you okay?" You ask as you see him immersed in thought.
"Yeah, it's nothing." His hand slides from your forehead to your cheek and he stands up.
"Hey... are we still on for... going for a walk?" You ask her in a shy tone.
"Are you feeling up to going out?"
"Yeah, it's only been a moment, but I feel fine." Russell wants to insist, but bites his tongue.
You get out of bed carefully, he offers you his hand to steady you and you look at him gratefully once again. He leaves you alone to change your clothes and you leave the house without a fixed direction. You walk slowly, you've told him you feel fine, but your muscles are still sore, Russell matches his pace to yours, a little behind you, hands behind his back, watchful, alert for any moves you might make wrong, to pick you up if necessary.
"So... Are you always alone?" You dare to ask after a few minutes in silence.
"At home? Yes, my brother comes to visit me from time to time, but nothing else..."
"Your brother...?"
"Gabe, he works in the police force, we all belonged to the same unit." He explains scratching his chin beard.
"Really? What happened? I mean... it sounds like you don't..."
"No, not anymore... there was trouble with a mob group, we were trying to catch them and I got caught." He sighs at the memory. "They tortured me to tell them about the police plans and they almost killed me..."
"Oh God, Russell..." You look at him in terror. "I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to... I shouldn't have asked."
"No, it's okay, I got over it...at least most of the time." He chuckles. "I was in the hospital for a while and they decided to remove me from the force due to the impact of the trauma..." He shrugs and lifts his shirt a little and you see a scar marking his abdomen. "It's the most permanent memory I have of that day."
You swallow nervously unconsciously raise your hand wanting to touch the mark, but quickly pull your hand away looking away, embarrassed, Russell smiles and pulls his shirt back down.
"We can all fight our ghosts..." He says to you in a deep voice and you lower your head feeling tears fill your eyes.
"I-I think we better get back home..."
Things change little by little, now your relationship with Russell is nicer, a little friendship is forming between you that makes you feel special. The ex-cop is also nice to Matt, even though you're not exactly friends, Russell agrees to share some evenings with him, drinking beer and watching the games on TV just to make sure you're okay. Matt is possessive even in his presence, he forces you to sit next to him and his arms wrap around you as if he's afraid something bad will happen to you, quite the opposite, he was the danger, but Russell stayed out of it.
"Okay."
🛡💔⚔
Again, on days when Matt wasn't home due to work, Russell would invite you for a walk, help you with the heavy shopping, you would even spend some evenings, sitting on his porch talking about nothing and everything, no matter how late it was getting. It was nice to feel cared for and protected like that. Being with him you'd had some new dizziness, something he still didn't like, but you kept downplaying it, weak with health since you were a teenager.
"So, is everything in order?" Monica asks on the other end of the phone.
"Yes, I'm sorry I asked you that, that day..."
"I'm glad you want to help people, but those things are serious and illegal..."
"I know, Monica, I'm sorry." He sighs rubbing his face with one hand.
"How's it going with your neighbor, any progress?"
"I told you she was married, what progress do you want there to be?"
"Yeah, and you wanted access to the cameras in her house..."
"It was just for protection..."
"Russell... I know I can't see you now, but I know what you're doing..."
"I'm just a neighbor..."
"You're meddling in their relationship, you're befriending Matt to keep him in line so you can keep an eye on her, right?" There's an amused tone in his voice, but also a hint of reproach, Russell growls biting his lip.
"You're pretty smart, aren't you?"
"No, it's just that sometimes you men are so obvious." He sighs.
"No one deserves to live in fear, Monica..."
"But she hasn't asked for your help and you can't just show up at her house like an animal. You know that will only benefit him..."
"I know..." He growls again.
Russell lets go of the cigarette he's finishing and lets the air out slowly looking out at the backyard of your house. The sheets have been laid out since yesterday, he hasn't seen you yet, but he hasn't seen Matt either, he knows you're there because the cars are parked in his spot and he thinks he heard noise in the kitchen, but it's strange that you haven't picked up your clothes yet. He shakes his head and goes back inside the house, without leaving the conversation with Monica.
He can't argue with her, every word she says, Russell can do nothing but agree with her, trying to deny it would be stupid. From that day you became dizzy and fell into his arms, Russell was aware of how fragile you were, that you were. That meant having Matt around too, which helped the ex-cop learn to control his temper, he couldn't just jump on him, in that your co-worker is right too, if he does that the only thing he will achieve will be to hurt you, because everything will go against him and when you are alone at home again, Matt will vent against you, and maybe everything will end there. He closes his eyes trying not to think about that, that you are a strong woman, despite everything, that he would never go to such extremes.
"Hold on Monica, I have an alert." He cuts his conversation short and walks hurriedly to the computer. His throat closes instantly. "Call an ambulance. Now!" He screams and before he's conscious, she's running out of the house.
⚔💔⚔
"Russell? Russell, what's going on? Russell!" Monica calls out to him, but his phone has fallen into oblivion, on the couch.
Tumblr media
That morning you wake up dizzy again, you've been sick to your stomach for several weeks when you wake up.
You haven't given it a thought, you've been eating a lot these days, Russell's visits are really encouraging to Matt and the three of you enjoy a great atmosphere, you meet for dinner, watch the games, and when Matt is not around, Russell still worries that you're ok. The arguments and tensions at home have also lessened, you feel more at peace, you feel like you can move around your own house without being afraid of making too much noise.
Your bags are packed at the back of the closet, because you felt it was unbearable. Maybe it would have been cowardly to run away like that, but you don't feel strong enough to fight Matt by yourself. Your mind flashes back to the image of Welch and you can't help but smile a little, your stomach twists and you feel the nausea getting stronger then. You take a deep breath wanting to calm down.
"No way..." You whisper to yourself and reach into your bathroom cabinet for an elongated rectangular box.
You always buy several pregnancy tests, never show them to Matt, but you keep them tucked away for yourself so you know the birth control pills are working. You haven't stopped taking them, but it's true that you haven't taken a test in days.
Your hands shake nervously as you open the package and take out the test. You know the routine, you've done it so many times already, but this time you feel a bit overwhelmed, your period has never been regular, so you can't rely on that either. You sigh trying to calm down and leave the device on the sink while waiting for the result.
"No. No, no, no, no." You repeat over and over again watching your eyes fill with tears.
Positive.
You are pregnant.
Suddenly under your feet a huge hole forms and you feel as if your body is being dragged down. You hold tightly to the edge of the sink, tears streaming unceasingly down your cheeks, your hands won't stop shaking.
"Honey?" you hear Matt on the other end and you stop breathing. "Are you all right? You've been in there a long time..."
"Y-yeah, I'll be right out, I just..." You swallow and clear your throat. "I'm not feeling very well, I'm going to go to the pharmacy to get some medication..."
"Do you need a ride?"
"No, it's not necessary, I'll be right down to make you breakfast." You warn him and hear him humming.
"Good and brush your teeth if you threw up, you know I hate it when your breath smells."
"S-sure." You turn on the water and obey him, brushing your teeth harder and faster than you should.
You leave the bathroom, get dressed in the first thing you can find, dark sweatpants and sneakers, grab a purse, make sure you have cash, and go down to the kitchen to make him breakfast.
"Good morning, love" You say with the best smile you can muster and kiss him.
"Good morning, how are you feeling?"
"A little dizzy, but I'm fine." You tell him getting down to business. You prepare him a scrambled eggs and crispy bacon plus some pancakes.
"It's not the first day this has happened to you, maybe we should give it a try." He comments and you almost lose your balance.
"A-a test?" You ask full of nerves.
"A pregnancy test, you go to the drugstore, don't you? Maybe you should buy one."
"Oh sure! Of course, I'll buy one just in case..." You nod without stopping fidgeting around the kitchen.
"Can you imagine a baby at last? After all this time we've been looking for it?" Your heart stops as you set the plate down on the table.
"That would be perfect..." You lie as best you can, still smiling, and take off your apron. "I'll be right there."
Matt doesn't stop you, a strange smile takes over his mouth, you've never seen him like this, for a second you doubt your own intentions, what if a child was the answer to everything? What if Matt changed by having a child? What if everything bad would disappear then? But what if nothing changed, what if Matt became more aggressive, what if the baby suffered from his fits of rage? No, you can't allow that, nor are you going to find out what the possibility would be, you would never put a child of yours in that situation.
Ever.
You kiss your husband on the cheek and grab your purse and rush out of the house. For a moment you look towards Russell's house, maybe you could go and ask him for help, somehow so he could appease Matt's anger by telling him it was a negative test, but the man's blinds are down, it's still early and you can't risk Matt seeing you waiting at his door, everything could get much worse.
You drive to the pharmacy, luckily the neighborhood is big and there are several establishments that can serve you, but they know you and therefore they know Matt, if someone sees you shopping there, you would be lost, so you speed up and cross half the city, towards another neighborhood where nobody knows you. You park the car, get out and walk into the pharmacy heading straight for the counter, before you get there, you've grabbed a pregnancy test from one of the shelves.
"Good morning, how can I help you?"
"Good morning, this test and a box of abortion pills..." You whisper, your hands won't stop shaking.
"Are you all right, ma'am, do you need me to call an ambulance or...?"
"No, God, I just need the box, please..." You look at her pleadingly, she seems hesitant but finally gives you what you ask for. "Thank you very much." You pay cash and run out to the car.
You don't even wait to get home, inside the safety of the vehicle you pull out two pills and swallow them quickly, you feel them get stuck in one throat for a moment, but then you relax. Your heart is still pounding, but you really hope this is enough. You take a deep breath, start up and drive straight home.
Maybe, you should have warned Russell that morning.
"I'm home, Matt." You announce as you open the door. "I've got the test." You tell him and you feel your voice waver as you say that.
"Really? What about this one?" You hear his voice from the kitchen, walk over to him and freeze.
Matt has the pregnancy test you used earlier in front of him, testing positive, but that's not all, in his hands is a small box that you know perfectly well, it's your birth control pills. Your eyes widen, you find it hard to breathe and your body doesn't stop trembling. You open and close your mouth several times, trying to say something adequate, but you are unable to think of any excuse, fear paralyzes you to such an extent that you are not aware that you are crying.
"How long have you been taking this?" his voice sounds dangerous, deadly. "How long have you been betraying me?" He walks very slowly toward you. "Struggling to have a son and you were the one killing him every time."
"M-Matt I..."
"You're such a bitch!" he shouts choleric.
He grabs a vase from the kitchen and throws it at you, you manage to dodge it, but as it crashes into the wall next to you, the shards jump out and cut into your skin. You groan in pain and cover your face to prevent any serious injury. Matt walks straight at you, rage and anger pulsing inside his body. You run away, but you know you can't escape.
"How much more did you intend to make me look like an idiot!" he shouts and chases after you, pinning you down so you can't escape. "What have you got there!"
If hatred wasn't oozing from his pores, when he discovers the pills inside the bag, his judgment is completely lost.
"I'm going to kill you..." He roars and the first blow pushes you against the stairs.
With the second blow, you cover your face with your arms, but he throws you to the floor, he doesn't stop screaming, insulting you, his foot lodges in your belly every time a word comes out of his mouth, louder and louder, you beg him to stop, you don't stop crying, trying to defend yourself. You try to push him away, but one of his kicks hits your hand and breaks two of your fingers. You scream loudly, writhing in pain, but fear drives you wild and makes you bite Matt on the leg.
"Fucking bitch!" he shouts again and punches you, but you don't feel anything anymore.
You struggle to your feet, struggling with him, you get him to pull you, your hair until you crash into a wall. You can barely stand up, but you find the remote control for the cameras and press the button several times.
Matt grabs you by the head and hits you hard, you lose consciousness, you fall to the floor like a sack, but before losing consciousness completely you see how the camera light turns on and a thin smoke starts to fill the room, you don't know what it is, maybe you have a concussion or something... you don't care anymore.
🛡💔🛡
Russell doesn't know how he was able to hit the button to call the police, he's not even sure at what point he hit the distraction protocol button, he just hears his own voice screaming.
"Call an ambulance - now!"
Before speeding out of your house. The image of your bloodied face on the other side of the surveillance camera, burned into his retinas. He doesn't even go around the house, jumps the fence that separates your gardens and opens the kitchen door. He knows you always leave it open, it's your little way out, your escape route if things go wrong. As soon as the door opens, the gas dissipates, so Russell can see you on the floor and Matt on top of you, but this time his fist doesn't impact you.
Russell grabs your arm and twists it backwards. Matt screams in pain, but that doesn't stop Welch for an instant, he throws him to the ground, blocks it with his own body and lands a hard punch. And then another. And another. Matt's jaw crunches, but Russell can't get enough.
Punch. Punch. Punch. Punch.
"Police!" is heard from the doorway, Gabe and a group rush in. "Russell!" He yells to his brother and they manage to pull him away from Matt, who is unconscious on the floor.
"Get off me!" he roars, knuckles bloody, anger still coursing through his entire body. "Where's the ambulance!"
"It's outside! What happened?"
But he doesn't answer, he runs to you lying on the floor and scoops you up in his arms walking out of the house, heading straight for the ambulance.
"Russell!"
🛡💔⚔

Sunny War Album Review: Anarchist Gospel
Tumblr media
(New West)
BY JORDAN MAINZER
A breakup. The death of her father. A decaying Earth. Uprooting and moving to her childhood city. On Anarchist Gospel, Sunny War looks change in the face--some unexpected, some sudden, some gradual--and transforms chaos into her best album yet. The singer-songwriter and blues guitar fingerpicker has long channeled struggles, from personal bouts with substance abuse and addiction, to the overall fight against institutional racism and police brutality, into genre-averse songs of pain and triumph. The all-encompassing Anarchist Gospel expounds on this ethos, along with a cast of collaborators including producer Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes, Hurray For The Riff Raff), Americana wunderkind Allison Russell, Gillian Welch creative partner David Rawlings, and My Morning Jacket's Jim James. Still, Sunny shines above all.
Take opener "Love's Death Bed", featuring backing vocals from Russell and Chris Pierce's shimmering harmonica, atop clacking drums and banjo. Sunny, who leads a chorus in a call and response, centers the song's dead-eyed stare into the soul of an ex. "Your mouth is a gun / Got bodies dropping every time you speak," she sings, making our jaws drop from the get-go. On "No Reason", a song built around Sunny's incredible desert blues riff and Jack Lawrence's steady bass, she clarifies that even though her ex might not mean to hurt her, it doesn't matter: "Good intentions that you keep / Don't change the fact that you're a beast." Sunny explores intentionality of destruction throughout the album, both in interpersonal relationships and via the environment, asking us to empathize and reflect on the space we take up. On "Shelter And Storm", she sings from the point of view of Earth itself, albeit one that has managed to survive apocalypse, repeatedly and jubilantly declaring, "The humans are away!" Yet, on "Earth", her tone is mournful and more realistic. A stunning combination of blues and jazz, bolstered by the vocal support of James, Maureen Murphy, Nickie Conley, and Kyshona Armstrong, as well as past collaborator Micah Nelson's slinky 12-string, the song reminds us that the end of the world is closer than we think, tangible if you bother to look around.
At the same time, Sunny battles self-destruction throughout Anarchist Gospel; in the lead-up to its release, she spoke about her music representing a battle between that side of herself and the one trying to make things better. On "New Day", she uses the language of addiction to wax on love, hurt, and obsession: "Believing in magic can be tragic / I'm love's junkie, I'm love's addict." One of the record's true standouts is "I Got No Fight", where pained guitars and screaming organs exemplify Sunny's desire for the days to end, depression that buzzes like a fly in her ear. On the gorgeous country tune "His Love", she sings of an unhealthy relationship, "His love fades, my love grows," and the timbres of her voice and the instruments similarly diverge, her lurking deep vocal register contrasting the spryness of the backing vocals, guitars, and pattering drums.
If Anarchist Gospel is anything, it's honest, an album that both bares its teeth and cowers, that sometimes turns inward in the face of trouble but eventually overcomes with boisterous community. On the Crass-quoting, blues stomp clap jaunt of a closer "Whole", Sunny War sings, "Today could be the last, you know / Happy's how you ought to go." Fully knowing it's easier said than done, and for some folks, impossible, Sunny nonetheless dares to dream to everyone.
