Jacob Jordaens, Moses and his Ethiopian wife Zipporah (Mozes en zijn Ethiopische vrouw Seporah)(Antwerp, c 1645–1650).
* * * *
Jordaens' painting is a half-length depiction of the biblical prophet Moses, and his African wife, Zipporah, on display at the Rubenshuis Museum in Antwerp. Moses, a white man with dark hair, stands in the foreground, his right hand palm up and his left hand on the Tablets of Stone. The tablets are in shadow, their contents, the Ten Commandments, are unreadable. Behind him to his right stands his wife Zipporah. Her right hand is to her chest. The ribbons in her hat resemble a cross. The painting draws on Numbers 12:1, which states that Moses was criticized by his older siblings for having married Zipporah, a Black woman (Æthiopissa in the Latin Vulgate Bible version). The plain import of the very is that Moses' wife Zipporah was Black. Another interpretation is that Moses was criticized not for marrying a Black woman, but for having married more than once. Jordaens appears to have come across the story of Moses and his Black African wife reading Josephus Flavius' Antiquities of the Jews. Jordaens likely made the painting not on commission, but for himself or a close friend since it remained in his possession. Art historian Elizabeth McGrath says that
'Moses defends his black wife before the viewer, not his brother and sister. It is from the viewer that the Ethiopian woman draws back, questioning, puzzled and perhaps a little fearful. By his brilliant exploitation of the device of inclusion and confrontation, Jordaens gives the subject a pointed relevance, challenging Christians of his day to accept Moses's Ethiopian, as Miriam and Aaron could not, not just as a representative of pagan wisdom, a shadowed image of their own Church, but as a neighbour, in herself.'
The painting answers the question: what does the Bible have to say about interracial marriage. The answer: it's fine, and those who criticize it are bigots.

Interrail '23 | Stop 01 | Antwerp
I was explicitly told not to stay in Belgium so I beelined straight to Antwerp (more on the way to my next destination than Ghent) and it was a great first stop.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I thught I hallucinated seeing a herd of capybaras out of a window between Brussels and here but actually there WAS a zoo on the way so it's not entirely out of question that they were real???
I arrived on Saturday afternoon and after checking in to the hostel promptly went to get some (delicious) frites and check out the Plantin-Moretus, the most 'local' museum I could find to get a feel for local history. It had tons of really interesting objects and art, including the priting presses, leather wallpapers, books, painting by Rubens (doubly neat since Rubenshuis was closed for renovations), and objects the family who lived in the house used on everyday basis. Definitely recommended if you're in town.

I walked through the centre to Museum an de Stroom to check out view from the roof. The town is super cute and clearly quite affluent. There's lots of wine/book shops and cute cafes, lots of people and families just chilling on public squares and in pedestrianised areas. It seemed like a nice place to live, and apart from a crippling inferiority complex I'd develop because everyone else speaks 3+ languages and I need to change checkout language to English. ;___;
It's a shame that the displays at the museum were closed by that point cos they also seemed interesting.

I was too tired for a sitdown meal so my dinner was just some cheese cubes and belgian cherry beer at the hostel (which was cheap but functional... it was my only shared accommodation on the trip).
In the morning I had a quick wander on the riverside. A lot of it is currently being renovated so in a couple of years Antwerp will be even nicer than it is now.

After a coffee it was time to catch a train to my next destination - and knowing what I know now I wish I stayed for longer. There's definitely plenty of spots to check out and eat at to keep me busy for at least a long weekend, and with how easy it is to get to I have no doubt I will be back.

Blik on the Road: Antwerpen
Blik On The Road is een terugkerende rubriek waarin Blikopeners vertellen over kunst en cultuur die zij gezien hebben in het buitenland. Denk aan schilderijen, standbeelden, street art, installaties, theater, dans, film… Alles komt aan bod! Vandaag praat Michelle over Antwerpen.
Hoi!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Looking at my future library like 😍

Rubenshuis - The former home and workshop of Peter Paul Rubens in Antwerp
Rubenshuis – The former home and workshop of Peter Paul Rubens in Antwerp
In 1609, Rubens began construction of the Italian-style villa on the then-Vaartstraat, located at the banks of the Herentalse Vaart canal.  Rubenshuis renovated and extended on the basis of designs by Flemish artist. Rubens designed the building himself, based on studies of Italian Renaissance palace architecture. Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) is considered the most influential artist of the…
