Medea’s Weekly Tonic for Mind Body & Soul: Fairy Tales — Rosalind Medea — Life & Soul Magazine
Medea’s Weekly Tonic for Mind Body & Soul: Fairy Tales — Rosalind Medea — Life & Soul Magazine
I recently reread the Grimm brothers’ Hansel and Gretel, a fairy tale I was familiar with as a child. This time round, I became aware of how invaluable the story is as life lessons for everyone who reads it, regardless of age. Here we have a brother and sister who come across a house in […] […]Medea’s Weekly Tonic for Mind Body & Soul: Fairy Tales — Rosalind Medea — Life & Soul Magazine

Bianca, Hamlet, Medea, Orsino, Rosalind? 💙
BIANCA: What do you want most in life?
Honestly just a comfy little apartment that feels like a home  filled with light and love with a nice kitchen and lots of books and a cat
HAMLET: Do you prefer to think things through thoroughly or act on impulse?
Okay. It’s like half and half. Because I will do a lot of things just because why not? It would be fun? “tHeRe’S nOtHiNg StOpPiNg Us” but also I overthink everything and constantly run pros and cons lists for little everyday choices??? I made a whole ass color coded spreadsheet for one (1) 15 minute conversation with my parents today lmao
MEDEA: Do you have any quirks?
Okay I am not entirely sure that this is what the question is asking but like I am singing something almost all of the time?? Like I hear ONE THING that reminds me of a song lyric and I Will sing it. (Maybe that’s just theater kid. I am so sorry) but also I got some of my grandma’s superstitions so I throw salt over my shoulder if I drop any/not have open seats in the car at night/have bread for housewarmings
ORSINO: If you could have any material thing in the world, what would it be?
,,,,,,Can I say the apartment from the first one plus my specific cat?
ROSALIND: What does your ideal day entail?
Honestly? Just spending it with people I love. It doesn’t really matter what we’re doing as long as we can laugh. I guess driving maybe??? but that might just be an “all my friends are minimum two hours away issue
💛💛💛

DATE: November 1st
TIME: 12:03 AM
LOCATION: Castelvecchio Bridge
They move through the night untouched, the three of them walking through the streets that their own decree had brought to ruin. Like biblical entities, the crowds parted before them, pausing in their shooting, in their pillaging, in their vulgar debauchery to listen to the sounds of their cloaks snapping in the faint breeze, or watch their boots scatter the casings of bullets out of their way. It was as if the whole of the city knew that, on this night of inconsequential rioting, they could never fool themselves into thinking that the witches would allow any disrespect to befall them. There was a whisper that Circe had stepped upon a pool of blood, like Christ walking upon water.
They move through Measure by Measure, the Dark Lady, the haunts of every Veronesi, gathering them like a brewing storm until a mob was dogging their steps, following in their wake.
But instead of growing more riotous, the crowd falls silent, nothing but the occasional gasps of pain from injured onlookers or groans from those who dragged themselves to see the culmination of the great La Purga di Verona come to life before their eyes. But then the whole of the mob took a breath. Then the witches were gone, nothing but their memories left in the spot they had once been. A murmur swept through the crowd, whispers of devilry and seraphic miracles at work, one theory no more believable than the other.
“Verona has been exorcised of their greater demons. Verona is to taste redemption, for, through the suffering of this night, we have seen the product and purging of their sin.”
And with that, it’s lit. A torch licking with flame is pressed onto the fuel soaked rags within the boat and pushed adrift. The crowds gather, eyes and ears attentive, turned toward the small, makeshift platform that adorns three witches like trophies. Limbs lithe, spectral like and gaze ominous,  their comfortability addressing the masses evident in the unwavering tone they emit.
“Bloodied hands washed clean,” one of them croons, Medea with pursed lips and something like hope swelling in their chest.
“Vices set on fire,” Hecate corrects, stepping forward as their eyes are cast beyond the crowd, toward the fire building upon the Adige.
“Burned away,” says Circe, agreeing happily. “As the clock strikes twelve, we shall start anew.”
The people cheer, some half-heartedly, but most wildly, roaring with pride for having survived this purge, a little worse for wear, but their loved ones remain tight in their grasp, and there’s nothing more to be thankful for.
Is there?
A few hundred feet away, a familiar soldier makes her way up a winding staircase, emerging onto the roof of a building perfectly adjacent to the Castelvecchio—a beautiful vantage point, and GONERIL takes her perch. Opening up the case procured from Bianchi’s, she pulls out the sniper rifle and attaches the scope, setting her sights on a familiar Boss as he stands beside his doting daughter. Three slow breaths follow, leather gloves squeaking as she holds the grip tight. The floating inferno passes beneath the bridge. Now’s her chance, the taste for revenge thick in the back of her throat as she puts an eager finger to the trigger, bullet intended right for his putrid heart.
LAERTES holds the hand of his sister, clutched tightly as they watch the boat make its way toward them, Damiano at their sides. Justice seems like a far-fetched dream to them both now, a chance to enact something so deserved set alight right before their eyes. He promises them it’ll still be served, but seeing is believing and all they see is peace offered to a side that doesn’t deserve it. IMOGEN stands just off to the side, eyes locked with OPHELIA’s, the only hope the Montague has left, it would seem.
ROSALINE stands between her cousins, TYBALT’s arm wrapped around JULIET’s shoulders. The head, the hands, the heart. And their fearless leader. Victors by all accounts, guilt evaded and punishment absconded, and rightfully so. Cosimo stands behind his future, VOLUMNIA at his side, with nothing but pride in his chest, for he knows whatever is to come will be met with the fiercest of Capulets. His golden trio, his ruthless Queen—and nothing can stop them now.
But then that picture fades, fast and all at once.
A gunshot. A cracking of cobblestone beneath feet. Cosimo lunges forward, pushed off balance by the rumbling, but it still sinks into his body, the bullet lodging into the flesh of his shoulder.
The bomb goes off, rips the Castelvecchio right in half.
In a split second, peace is shattered. Verona is tarnished. Assassination is attempted.
And the world falls apart.
JULIET feels it first, something like death rumbling beneath the bridge. Blood pools against her father’s white shirt, wound gaping in his shoulder, and she reaches to grab him. “Tiberius, he’s hit!” She yells out for help, but it’s deafened by the cries of those around her as the bridge gives out. ROSALINE is thrown, the blast knocking her off her feet and into the group of civilians gathered around ODIN. “Get up,” he grunts, offering her a hand. “We’ve got work to do now.”
EDMUND’s balance is lost the moment the bomb goes off, standing close enough to the impact that he’s tossed to the opposing side, shoulder slamming into that of LAERTES, who falls prone beneath him. Teeth bared and anger coursing through him, he lands an elbow to the Capulet’s face out of pure spite and scrambles to his feet, ready to attack. EDGAR leaps to his brother’s aid, crossing the bridge with a jump across the flames to try and land a punch along the Montague’s jaw, but OPHELIA steps between them, knife freed from its hiding spot quickly and held up in defense. She’s already lost her brother once, she refuses to again.
CORDELIA is sent soaring away from the blast, back colliding hard with the edge of the bridge, a few feet from where CLEOPATRA stands. She scans the crowd in search for one face and one face in particular, that of the man who promised her they’d end this night together, but FORTINBRAS is nowhere to be found and now a Capulet soldier lay at her feet. She picks CORDELIA up under her arms and drags her to safety, off of the now declining bridge and into enemy territory. “Who would do this?” CLEOPATRA asks, shuddering at the thought, at the horror of people plummeting off the sides of the bridge to avoid the flames. There’s no answer from CORDELIA. She has no words. No explanation.
Bodies topple over the sides of the now-collapsed bridge. It creaks and sways with the current of the water, each second a race with time and prayer as people cry out for their loved ones, once held tightly within their arms but now sent flying in every which direction.
MALCOM, having been leaning over the edge to look out onto effigy, was tossed back, torso flipping from the sheer momentum of the blast. He catches himself on the side, knuckles white as his legs dangle into the freezing water. LAVINA sees him there, hanging on for dear life. “Help me,” he huffs out, one hand tragically losing its grip. “Valentina!” He calls out to his ally and she freezes in place, eyes darting around for the other Montague. PERDITA, hears this and stops dead in her tracks, a chill running up her spine. That name. That girl. Her lover’s smile emerges into view as tears sting behind her eyes. VIOLA pulls herself up from the cobblestone, shoulder dislocated from the harsh collision of a large piece of concrete slammed into her back, but nothing will stop her from getting to MALCOM, that is, unless a street rat from Rome can swallow her fear. “Paola, we have to go,” LILLIAN cries out to her, but she stands there frozen, eyes trained on the key to her lover’s murder. VIOLA pulls MALCOM up and the two head for Montague territory as PERDITA is pulled back by LAVINIA.
VOLUMNIA focuses on the bullet, the bomb a measly distraction compared to the assassination attempt on her precious Cosmio’s life. She flees and follows the trajectory, emerging from the bridge in a heap, nearly falling, but a familiar loathsome face stops her. ANTONY snarls in her direction, pushing her back onto her feet, but she doesn’t hesitate; she never has. “It was you, wasn’t it?” She asks, brandishing a gun from behind her back. “The bomb.” He doesn’t answer and lunges for VOLUMNIA instead, practically roaring at the accusation. Hopefully ANTONY is quicker than that of a bullet.
Fate is not so kind to NICK BOTTOM, who is tossed from the bridge following the immediate blast, sent sailing into the water. An unfamiliar and unsettling feeling to someone so accustomed to the flame, like a wet dog he paddles towards shore as best he can, but turns back upon the sight of someone floating face down within the river. ROSALIND, gash to her temple nearly an inch deep, he takes her by the arm and pulls her to shore along with him—a little saving grace in this newfound and entirely unexpected battle with survival tonight.
DESDEMONA, small shards of shrapnel embedded into her leg, limps her way into Montague territory, flanked by a frantic FORTINBRAS, shouting haphazardly into the crowd a name she doesn’t recognize, Russian rolling off his tongue but falling upon deaf ears. Her ankle catches on something sharp and she falls to one knee, clutching at the stranger who begrudgingly hoists her back up, bracing his shoulders against the stampeding crowd so as to offer her a bit of protection. “Can you walk?” FORTINBRAS asks, not waiting for an answer as he sweeps DESDEMONA’s legs up into his arms, carrying her until they can break away from the crowd safely. “Go home,” he orders, tossing a “you’re welcome” over his shoulder as he peels away from her.
The bomb went off right beneath his feet, sends him flying across the bridge and into Montague territory, where he lies there, the wind knocked straight from his lungs upon impact. It takes him a few beats, a few gravelly gasps for air before TYBALT pulls himself to his feet. Ears ringing and vision obscured, he’s an easy target, pushed forward along the street as the crowd shuffles him along. He searches for his cousins, desperate to find them, to find his uncle too. Had he been shot? He heard Juliana call for him, but then he was on his back. There’s another loud crash in the distance, muffled by the persistent ringing, but still he looks. OBERON tosses a molotov cocktail into the already shattered windows of To Tame A Soup—practically a sweet kiss in comparison to the things they’ve both seen and done tonight—one right after the other, until the entire structure is engulfed in flames. In the time it takes to close the distance between them, the cacophony of war around them is finally heard by the deafened Capulet. “Care to join me?” The brute hands a bottle to TYBALT, flicking his lighter again to ignite the rag soaked into a whiskey. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” A voice emerges from behind billowing smoke. ROMEO, ushering away the last few victim’s of OBERON’s terror, with fists now clenched and rage boiling, a bullet lands between the Capulet’s eyes. “Are you next?” He asks TYBALT as his eyes dart to FORTINBRAS standing behind him, gun in hand, too.
HAMLET, shoulder shattered upon his emergence from the bridge, trampled to the ground in all the chaos, he finds himself searching for safety in the wrong place. A group of Capulets pounces on him the moment he enters into the abandoned building, breaking his arm completely. CELIA, passing by on her way to find ROSALIND, hears this and searches down the cries of pain. It’s three on one, but the assault rifle in her grasp begs to differ. “Duck!” She calls out to him and HAMLET does as he’s told, dropping to the floor like a heap of dirty laundry upon her request. CELIA fires off an entire clip into the room, and all three of the bodies fall in a heap around him. “Looks like you owe me one,” she smirks and darts back out onto the street.
MERCUTIO emerges, seemingly out of nowhere, from behind with a surprise punch to KATHERINE’s temple, paying little mind to the cry of pain she elicits. Being so far away from the bridge during the explosion made her an easy target, even as she attempted to find solace in an alley to catch her breath. Yet there she was, all alone and cornered now, no allies in sight. GONERIL exits a building in an angry huff, having only wounded her intended target earlier, but spots a fight from across the street as she does so, suddenly delighted at the prospect of riding the still-there adrenaline rush. It isn’t until she sees KATHERINE go down after the third punch that she pulls out her gun. It’s an easy mark from this far, one bullet to her fellow Montague would do the trick. One bullet to the Capulet’s pretty little head would do the same.
JULIET turns the corner, visible only in periphery, but it’s enough of a distraction. GONERIL fires a warning shot above MERCUTIO’s head and darts off to taunt the princess. “How’s daddy?” She asks with a knife-sharp grin, taking off in a sprint toward JULIET who pulls out a revolver. What GONERIL doesn’t know—that her father is resting against the brick wall around the corner, bleeding out—won’t hurt her. MERCUTIO spins on their heel following the impact of a bullet to the brick wall behind them, narrowly missing their head. Not wanting to push their luck any further, they turn and filter back onto the streets, leaving KATHERINE to bleed out or fend for herself, they don’t care either way.
IMOGEN takes to the streets in search of CRESSIDA, heart racing at the thought of her having not made it to safety. It’s been hours since she’s seen her lover, and in the chaos of the bomb, she’d lost sight of her. Just for a moment, but it was enough. Two steps taken into Capulet territory, however, armed and rather feral in her intent to rescue the love of her life, she comes face to face with LADY MACBETH. Blood boiling at the mere sight of her, the night’s earlier revelation still present and fresh, she goes for her. No time like the present, and if the world was ending, then the last thing IMOGEN was going to do was serve justice. MACBETH emerges from behind her, pistol in his hand now pressed lightly against her temple. “I wouldn’t touch her if I were you.” He slinks in closer, voice low and raspy, something like loyalty fueling the fire raging within his chest. Not for the Capulets, no, but for the woman he’s to call his wife. LADY MACBETH smirks in the girl’s direction, brow quirked up in prideful satisfaction. “Go ahead, I dare you,” she whispers to her. MACBETH cocks the gun and leans in close, lips hovering just outside IMOGEN’s ear. “Run.”
CASSIAN finds himself cornered, backed into an alleyway by a few Montague soldiers he doesn’t recognize, all of whom wield some sort of makeshift weapon, all of which are intent on piercing him with said weapons. With no escape in sight, his eyes dart around frantically, back and forth, searching for any sort of exit. All that lay at his feet is a rock and some dirt. CRESSIDA steps out the back entrance and into the alley, voice loud and booming as she commands them to stop. Intimidation has never been her strong suit, but the shotgun she’d found behind the counter inside helped tenfold. She aims it at the wall just behind them and fires, the blast nearly knocking her off her feet, but still, they scatter. CASSIAN rises to his feet with a silent nod of thanks, more than he’s ever offered anyone before, and CRESSIDA nearly laughs. “Say thank you next time.” She fires off one more shot just for good measure, narrowly missing his shoulder before she slips back inside.
REGAN was one of those who had stood closest to the explosion, a ghost of a girl nearly turned into a ghost within a matter of seconds. She had been thrust back by the force of it all, landing oddly on her left side, passing out just as she felt an unbearable pain in her shoulder and arm. BEATRICE had been standing mere feet behind her, but those feet made all the difference, those who had been in front of her taking the brunt of it all. The minute she opened her eyes again, ears ringing and heart aching, she knew that she had to help them. BEATRICE saw someone stir, the Capulet wraith, the angle of the woman’s arm making her gasp in horror. But she rushed forward nonetheless, an assurance of comfort, a promise of aid on her lips. REGAN was faster, though, a knife in her hand, just as BEATRICE reached her. REGAN was a Capulet. BEATRICE was a Montague. Not even a mere explosion could erase that.
BIANCA finds herself jumped by some no-name wanna be Capulets, high on what she can only assume is faerie’s blood, willing themselves invincible as they tackle her to the ground, clearly too stupid to know she’s on their side. Her vision goes dark as they pummel her head, but not before she catches sight of an iPhone in the hand of a cruel stranger, filming the entire thing. HORATIO rounds the corner, a witness to the atrocity calling forth an unexpected wrath. He fires off two warning shots into the air and they scatter like rats into the street. He bends at the knees to turn over the victim, BIANCA just as surprised as he is when their eyes meet. “Thank you,” she mutters weakly, grabbing the hand HORATIO offers eagerly. He pulls her to her feet and the two make their way in opposite directions, sharing one last glance before they fade from one another’s view, but the two of them best pray that video never finds its way onto the internet. A Montague saving the life of a Capulet? In times of war? Surely punishable by death.
Find your loved ones, Verona. Hold them dear and protect them as much as you can.
You’ve survived the battle; now prepare for war.
OVERVIEW: Well, dear Veronesi, it would appear peace shall remain ever elusive within this city! As you can see we’ve lost one of our own tonight as OBERON met his untimely demise at the hands of a Montague, though some might say he had it coming. In his final act of chaos, To Tame A Soup has been completely destroyed, all that remains a pile of ashes where it once stood, and the once great leader of Measure by Measure has been unseated. FORTINBRAS now sits atop his throne, a beautiful red flag donning the Montague name planted just outside its doors. It’s theirs now. Riots rage on throughout the night, pillaging of corner stores and gunshots ring out until well past dawn, only tamped down by the emergence of Police. The Castelvecchio bridge is ruined, a wide crack now splitting it right down the middle. Both entrances have been closed off and the only way across the Adige is by boat.
Please keep all interactions for this event from between NOVEMBER 1st and NOVEMBER 29th in game, and do not go past such dates! Feel free to write out the interactions within the event, but remember to plot out the aftermath as well! Note the injuries sustained and the time it would take to recuperate, but remember, the city is practically in ruins. And while all emergency services are back up and running, the place your characters call home has been ravaged.

Bliss (Emily Post Is Dead)
Friday, March 19 - Sunday, March 21
Promo Vid Here!
Bliss follows the Ancient Greek characters Medea, Clytemnestra, Antigone, and Cassandra as they are now pill-popping housewives, in 1960s North Orange, New Jersey.  Cassandra, a black woman, has been gifted with the art of prophecy but cursed by the misogynistic Apollo that no one will ever believe her prophecies. She is on a mission to make Antigone, Clytemnestra, and Medea believe that they can finally have control and agency over their lives in this new modern era. Can we reclaim our “fates” and be in control of our lives? Or are our fates predetermined by the societal structures that are set in place? Bliss is about stepping into our power as women and breaking the “curse” or “cycle” once and for all.

Outdoors on Bucknell’s Campus
Love in all of its permutations takes center stage in this new twist on Shakespeare’s beloved comedy. When Rosalind’s usurper uncle overthrows the government and threatens her life, she disguises herself as a boy and flees into the Forest of Arden. Now known as Ganymede, she searches for her mother (the rightful duke) and is accompanied by her cousin and the court fool. The passionate Orlando, who fell in love with Rosalind before her escape, also steals into the forest to evade a vengeful sister. Hijinks ensue when Ganymede agrees to school Orlando in the art of wooing Rosalind. All the world’s a stage (literally) in this outdoor production that uses Bucknell’s campus as the backdrop for Shakespeare’s story.

SIMONE KERMES
Tumblr media
