Books of Blood by Clive Barker

in order, i liked In The Hills, The Cities (dang), The Yattering and Jack (probably going to be the one I re-read the most), Pig Blood Blues (thinking hard about this one's characters and imagery), The Midnight Meat Train (good but forgettable)

Piranesi by Suzanna Clarke

this was pretty short and pretty fun? if you like descriptions and don't like plot, i recommend it.

Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado

my favorite stories: Mothers, Inventory, The Resident, Difficult At Parties. 

The Mirror Season by Anna-Marie McLemore

this is a YA book. it's very good. it's about sexual assault and recovery.

Sorrowland by Rivers Solomon

the ending of this turned more scifi which i didn't like, but the majority is amazing horror.

The Between by Tananarive Due

REALLY RECOMMEND THIS. it's a very sad story first, and a horror story second. it's kind of like the shining but i like it more.

Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer

i only read the first book. i don't want any explanations. it's great.

speaking of aro halcarol, do what do you think about the song “not in love” by natalia kills for them? i haven’t read much carol yet, really just hard traveling heroes, so i’ll leave it up to you to decide if it makes sense for them. anyway i love seeing more aromantic headcanons for dc characters!

I could see it, this verse especially. I see it more Carol singing to Hal than Hal singing to Carol. Carol out of the two of them seems to want love less. She wants to marry Hal because she's supposed to get married and with hal she has control over her life, while Hal, while feeling very aro, idealizes love (relates back to his love of fantasy and knights in shining armors).

I always think of this panel for them, the way they fall back into familiar patterns. They want to love each other, they want to be together, but there's always something in the way. Thank you for the song rec!

@rootbeerqueer ME TOO i want this so badly. i want joey to get to be angry. i think that for him, unlike raven, his mother is not the easiest target for him--not because she is not safe, but because of how close they are. if joey is mad at adeline, who does he have really? i think it would be very easy for him to be angry at grant, because grant is a bitch and grant is dead, but also he's you know, dead. so it's not very helpful, there's still nowhere to put that anger.

i am thinking of joey getting really, horribly, self-destructively angry at slade. i think you're so right that joey doesn't feel like he has a right to be angry at slade, for whatever mixture of reasons: blaming himself for getting kidnapped, not really remembering slade's abuse because he was so young, feeling like what happened to him wasn't as bad as what happened to other people that slade hurt, feeling responsible for slade's actions as his son. and its like JOEY. slade destroyed your family and almost got you killed and you were seven.

i want joey to ask slade like why did you do that. i don't know if slade would have any answer for him let alone a satisfying one, because slade is pathetic and a father. but to have joey ask for that...

and agh, this is what bothers me about not-well-thought-out or not-well-executed brainwashing arcs. i love when there's a question about how much is the brainwashing and how much is the brainwashing allowing something deep down to come to light....but that has to be well written u know? HOWEVER approaching this in a vibes-based way, the vibes of this are so good. joey being angry at slade, joey thinking explicitly about the Cycles he is Trapped In. YES.
