I know it isn’t International Romani day, but I wanted to make this to celebrate and bring awareness about the Romani community. Characters who are Romani like Wanda or Pietro often get misrepresented or white washed in mainstream media (*cough cough* Marvel Cinematic Universe and the X-men *) for no good reason. This is horrible because the Romani are an already unrepresented group that deal with many injustices. According to The Council of Europe, some of the terrible things to occur to the Romani include:

“facing hatred and human rights abuses every day. Roma are refused access to decent housing, evicted without notice and left open to attack by prejudiced neighbours.-blocked from the jobs market and from opportunities to get better education and vocational training. Roma children are bullied at school, or sent to schools meant for people with learning difficulties. Roma women have been sterilised against their will”

This also doesn’t address the 500 years of slavery or the misuse of their culture from people who aren’t Roma

Unfortunately, this mistreatment exists around the world (including North America).

Despite this mistreatment, the Romani have contributed so much beauty into the world. Including the flamenco dance, movies, music, books, etc

I can’t speak on how good the representation Nightwing, Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver are to the Romani community because I am not Roma. I created this because I understand how important these characters are, and how important they could be (if Marvel or DC hired Romani writers) to changing the perception of the Romani community. It’s important to recognize the beauty of other groups in real life and fiction; because their stories are important and should be told.

I just recently learned about the struggles of the Roma people and I'm not surprised with violence against minorities (being a poc) but the open and unquestionable hate thrown at them impacts me deeply. There's no way to get used to violence, and every hate act against them makes me deeply sad and angry, for the act itself and for the silence that follows. Our silence.

Today, I share something that happened with a little girl in Greece. Olga - a 8 years old girl - was left to suffer until her last breath, crashed against a sliding factory door in Keratsini. All the people there watched for 70 minutes and did nothing to help her. Someone even poked her with their feet to see if she was still alive.

Guys this is pure evilness! Please don't let this go unnoticed. Media - as always - is trying hard to keep this from the public eye. The whole thing happened November 17, 2021. Share your feelings for justice in every platform you can.

(re: psychonauts and romani rep) This Is 100% Pure Speculation but i am wondering if after being told that [g-slur] is in fact a slur (and apologizing + promising to not use it in psychonauts 2 after learning this) that mr head writer tim schafer was similarly unaware of any alternatives and simply avoided mention of the topic altogether ?? or else in favor of building on grulovia instead (whilst also being in a bit of a hole with what was already established; i guess i can get not wanting to risk digging yourself any deeper but at least try to climb out of it yknow?)

Entirely possible! plus there is a common stance that gadje (non romani people) shouldn't write romani people because of the fact that like. most get it wrong and rely solely on stereotypes. which is true. gestures to redwall, gestures to the hunchback of notre dame, gestures to dick greyson, gestures to some of the wanda maximoff writers. (also arguably gestures to wings of fire for how many antiromani stereotypes their nightwings have and to the his dark materials series for basing the name of the coded characters on the slur and the whitewashing depending on the series) and if someone were playing solely psychonauts 2 and said the aquatos were romani, because of the circus and the psychic powers, thatd be an outright racist assumption in a lot of cases tbh. personally im annoyed because there was an opportunity to raise awareness and combat these stereotypes by addressing them in game- because some romani people do work with circuses, i know someone who is an acrobat and fortune telling is likewise a complex career choice and topic (Romanistan's second episode provides two viewpoints on it, and they discuss other views as well, so i would suggest giving that a listen). given that, it wouldve been an excellent opportunity imo to jump out from there and maybe bring in some more of the aquato family, maybe those with other career choices! or sharing some of their specific family history. there was a chance to start dispelling some of those stereotypes, especially given the prevalence of antiromani racism in present day. and given that psychonauts is apparently supposed to be a trilogy, who knows, maybe theyll even do better in the next game!
